Opacity is so important for gouache, so it’s great to see them performing like this. I will refer people to this video when they ask me about jelly gouache!
Another great review/comparison! I have the large Himi set (the original one, not the new one). The first set I got had a damaged side latch so the seller replaced it and it latches fine all the way round. Also... to keep it clean inside... I cut out a sheet of baking parchment and lay it over the paints before placing the lid. When the parchment get really nasty, just replace it. The sponge in the lid stays pristine!
Maybe you could find a "wet pallet" to keep on your desk that you can put your jelly paint in. Paul Rubans has one. I also bought these small plastic sticks from shein for $1 for 50pcs. They are called double ended nail drills (but there isn't a drill on it), I use them are reusable stir sticks. They are perfect for stirring paint, coffee, resin, ect. They are made for nail techs, but these are gold for a buck! Wash easily and reuse forever. Much better than the end of a paint brush or popsicle sticks. Use 1 per cup to stir and just rinse them off at the end. Hope it helps others. I feel a little bit genius over them! 😆 🤣 😂

I'm considering a smaller set from Arrtx with 18 colors for about $20. I loved their helpful videos. ("How many cherries can you paint with a 30 ml. jelly pot?" Now that sort of info is useful!) I haven't done a lot of painting for a while (into more collage presently) so I didn't want to get a huge set I might not use much. But I can see that these could easily be used to add details to collage. Excited to try them! :)
Maybe you could add a layer of press n seal over the paints before adding the lid and change it out when it gets messy, have seen people use it on jars of gesso, pastes and glazes. It helps seal out the air, too
I’m not gonna get it, I’m not gonna get it, I’m not gonna get it…. 😂 I’ve got a 24 color Magicfly set that I’ve barely used. It may be just under a year old. The info that came with the packaging notes that shelf life is 6 months open and 18 months unopened? Thanks a lot Lindsay, LOL!!! You are NOT helping my art supply addiction!!!! I just bought the Miya Himi 24 set of jelly gouache about a month and a half ago, (chose that one because I wanted the mint colored pallet, cause that's SO important). After this I just HAD to order the 56 artsy set too!!! I swear after the last 2 months (been on an art supply kick again) my poor bank card is crying and begging for mercy!!!!
The magicfly ones I think are the ones I found most impressive. They were the cheapest. The same size as your favorite small one you can't get anymore. Very easy to peel the plastic off. They have holes in the bottom to push each cup to take it out easily. It comes with the foam lid. It closes super tight with a handle. Also it comes with a hard plastic sheet to place over the paint so you don't get foam lid dirty. It comes with a great instructions on how to take care of the paint . Also comes with three pretty good paint brushes. It was only 17.00 . Only con to me is I wish the color pallet had more pinks . It's a pretty balanced pallet a light and dark of each color and two whites.
Oh my goodness, I am so glad to hear your comments on letting the Himi tryout. I watched your review and let my set dry out, It was horrible. I tried to rewet non luck. I finally through them out. I may try the cops again, butImam now very wary as I live in the desert of Las Vegas NV.
Honestly I thought that too as I have several miya and himi palettes. There are a couple of differences tho. The color selection is a bit different and the artsy and annigoni (this one, I think they are made by the same company) are more opaque. It's a small difference and I wouldn't have known unless I swatched them side by side. If you already have the big miya set I don't think the difference is great enough to buy both. The cups are different shapes, the Annigoni are slightly larger with .o2 ounces more paint. Again it's a small difference. The big downsides with the miya paint are the latches on the cases. They don't lock down well so you cant trust lifting them by the handle (the handle came broke on one miya pallette) and also you need to weight it down when storing so it doesn't dry out as the latches pop open. The case is much nicer on the annigoni set and all 4 latches lock tight. It's a larger footprint for the same amount of colors and the kids on each cup were harder to pull off compared to miya. So in sort I don't think they are the same paint or made in the same factory. I prefer this set and it's like $15 cheaper! But again I want to stress if you already have the miya himi jelly gouache you don't need this. I'll post a comparison of all the miya himi palettes I have soon.
What a fun set, Lindsay and thanks for the in-depth review!! ❤️👏🏻❤️ I would love to play with those gel gouache sets but even your smallest set is too big for my spacial needs as I would need a mixing tray too. 🫤
After watching your review I had to go out of course and buy the large set of jelly Guasch and oh boy are they gorgeous! I didn’t find that they were a huge pain in the butt to open but I lived through it! Now the fun begins!!
Lindsay, thank you for covering this brand of jelly gouache. The Miya/Himi is the only brand regularly reviewed on TH-cam, but I agree that this Annigoni is more pigmented and more opaque. I like the color selection a little better too. However, there is a new brand out called Art Whale jelly gouache. It's a set of 42 50 ml jelly gouache cups. They come in a container similar to this one but in addition to the airtight foam top there are lids on each jelly cup! The one review I saw on it indicates that it is more opaque than Miya hemi so it may be the same gouache as the Annigoni. With your large following, I'll bet Art Whale would be glad to send you one to review. I don't work for them but I have seen it on Amazon and I'm really curious as to your opinion of it.
These are so wonderful, tempting. What a deal, too! I think if I were using them, I'd select the cups I want, put them in a different palette and just use that herking huge thing for storage. I have the Arttx 18 set. I accidentally let it dry out, but have found if I add a generous amount of water to each cup, they rehydrate well. It takes some patience and forethought to remember to wet them awhile before using. But the Arttx are smelly and I think drying out helped. I wonder if the Artsy are as smelly. I still love them. They make me feel like a kid. Thanks for sharing.
I've never bought any of the gelly gouache paint sets because I know I won't be able to deal with the mess. I have a relatively small work area, so odds are I'm gonna put a sleeve in the paint or even knock the whole thing over. And, of course, it's only a matter of time until my cat steps right in one of those 'cells'. With tubes, I put out a small amount on my palette, and if disaster strikes I have more paint in the tube. Thanks Lindsay
After you made that initial jelly gouache review like a year ago I bought that black Artsy gouache set and Im so glad I did since they arent being made any longer. I love that big artsy set, i may want to get that one; tho i do with it offered more Earth and Neutral colors. Anyway great review. Thanks for sharing and much love ❤
Thank you Lindsay. I've always refused to buy gouache. I've never seen a brand that was truly opaque without white so I just added titanium white to my watercolors and made my own gouache. Which gets expensive, but only needing to carry one tube of titanium white makes it easy for field work. Until now that is. Finally, a truly opaque gouache. I just might get it and save my watercolor budget. Thanks. Edit: okay we got them from your link. Thanks again.
Very tempted to get this set. I've bought artists acrylics and watercolours but feel a bit intimidated by them. Thinking I may be better off with a set like this that takes me back to childhood painting where the stakes are lower. Thanks for the great review!
Press and Seal brand wrap makes for a good sealer over your palette if you get all the sides pressed down. However, if it touches the paint, it can make a big mess some may not care to deal with if they’re not careful. If you peel it off straight back and set it aside while painting and line it back up when you’re done it with it, it can be reused. You can also use this as an extra barrier so if the lid won’t close, it will still keep your paints wet.
Those looks so pretty. I’ve got two small gouache sets the original one from Miyha and the pastelish one from Artexx. However, I haven’t found the time to play with them like I have with watercolors. Should I ever decide I like the medium I will put Artsy brand on my list if I want more colors. Also I like the cut corner for the paints to make it easier to take out of the palette.
You might consider tube sets as well. Or one of the 24 Jelly cup sets form another company. There are probably reviews. I'll have a video on the miya ones i have soon.
I recently opened my Arrtx Jelly Gouache and I really enjoyed using it. It was fun to see what you thought of the differences today between your sets. I have a few more bands to try, so I'm curious how they will compare.
This is fun and congrats! I have tubes so I probably won't invest, but I can see how many folks would find convenience/a break from the learning curve with so many colors pre-tinted, especially if you need several values of one color and don't want to bother with a palette knife. EDIT: Not claiming to know for anyone reading that it's like PanPastels where the tints are simply the same pigments as the pures plus white, but they look close enough by eye.
Just my two cents on my experience. I never took the plastic covers off gel lids I didn't trust the foam seal or closer being tight enough. Then I painted the swatch of each color on top and glued it down. (a little more work) Painting directly on plastic it peeled of my first try when they dried. My first purchase in 2020 I just opened and they are like I just opened them no drying or thickening. I have the Miya set I never had any issues with it not staying closed but there is a trick to closing less effort than painting the tops...LOL. I'm happy to see you do a demo on another brand set there are so many I just picked one hoped for the best. I love the paint it's so much fun to use.
You are soooo AWESOME!!! I just got this same gouache palette today. Mine is kinda dry, even though the paint inside was thoroughly sealed. Should I send it back to Amazon for a replacement?
Lindsay, interesting video. Jelly gouache intrigues me quite a bit (love the idea of being able to put white on top of other colors). I see you're using flat brush for swatching. Would I be able to use same brushes for gouache as I use for watercolor pencils? Also, which palette is your favorite for gouache plein air?
I also have a palette where the lid refuse to close and it just tease my OCD. The paint stayed wet for almost 8 months because I placed a wet babywipe in the lid and stored the palette in a huge mesh pouch when putting away. Then came the time where the pans dried up and I keept using them. At first I noticed that my paintings was done with more water on the brush because I had to re-wet dried paint and it somehow gave a different transparent look compared to the paintings done with the wet gouache - almost made me think that it feelt like a flat chalky watercolour. Then I started to notice that the more I used the hard pans the more the paint started to crumble and now several of the pans looks like a rocky moon landscape where water runs into cravasses making the pans recieve even more water during a painting session - creating more cracks and crumbles sooooo... my long comment is to get across that the longer you can keep your paint moist the better. Dang... they even look so beautifull and inviting compared to the dried up crumbled pans.. lol. I looked at your playlist and noticed that your HIMI 24 Jelly Gouache palette is more than a year old - amazing that they still are moist!!! That lid seems to be trustworthy and it came with a white palette inside the mint palette.
I've tried Himi and wanted them to be more opaque. Ended up tossing it after it dried out for the second time. These look better. Do they come in a smaller size? As fun as it is to have so many colors, I probably won't use them all.
@@thefrugalcrafter I suppose I could put some in a smaller container like the gouache one you recently reviewed. But I'm still on my no-buy till July 1st.
I was browsing on Amazon and found a large set like this from Artwhale. They are 42? of the large 50ml cups. The reason i chose these over these you are showing is....... they are all named with stickers on the side of each cup and a separate reusable cap with sticked names for each. Will be nice to use a palette knife and get a bit out and cover them individually so the ones you arent using wont dry out. I haven't received it yet but the colors look beautiful, especially the light grey blue.
@@thefrugalcrafter Of course. It is a rather expensive set. But i really liked my original Himi 18 and there are so many other sets to choose from since then. If it compares it would be the ultimate upgrade.
@@thefrugalcrafter Ok, the problem with the lids.._.4 of the containers are open on the edges which i think is a result of the machines forcing the lids on. However the paint in those 4 are not dried out, probably because of the lids. The paint is a bit thicker than the Himi first opening and the paint is also a bit more opaque, which is nice. I havent done a lot of work with them yet but it is nice so far and im rushing to share this since its 30 % off so if you want it get it there are 4 left the last time i checked. Thankfully Amazon was nice and gave me back the 18 dollars for the discount.
Hi Lindsay, TFS! I have a (sort of) related question: Have you ever used Jelly Gouache on rubber stamps? I don't own any Jelly gouache (yet), but was wondering if it would be a good alternative to using acrylic paint, because of the ability to clean the stamps off a lot easier. I'm wondering how well these would work. Thanks again ❤
Does this set offer pigment information? I remember your review of the Artxx set, where you were so happy that pigment info was available. Thanks for the thorough review. As always, very detailed and insightful.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks for your reply! These are so tempting!! So far, I managed to keep the "gouache want monster" at bay. I bought an "airtight" palette and put some of my Schmincke gouache colours from tubes, which I've had for a long while. Just 14 colours, but it is a start to get mixing. It was useful to watch your review of the gouache plein air palettes you did. Thanks for that too!
I am rewatching this, as I just snapped one 52 colour intact set for USD 10 second hand, from a neighbour who decided gouache is not her thing. I am also rewatching the other Miya vice, to see how to reorganise the colours, as your method has more logic than what my neighbour had done with her palette. Now I am off to dive deep into your back catalogue, to see your reviews and paintings using these jelly gouache paints. I love watching you swatch, so keep at it.
This looks like a nice set. I've had the 60 set of Arteza for a couple of years. I've only ever swatched them. Not knowing anything about gouache I put the paint in large wells and let them dry out. I know they aren't useless but won't be as opaque so I'm thinking of getting a new set. I'm just wondering how hard it will be to mix browns with this set or if I should consider a set that has browns? I've been a member of your critique club from the beginning. I love the converse shoes. I've always meant to paint the rooster. This video has me excited again about gouache. I've been painting with watercolors for a bit over 3 years and have been in a slump for a few months. Trying a new medium might help. Thanks for always being so positive and a joy to watch.
I have two questions: 1- what is the difference between jelly gouache and tube gouache? 2- how long does the jelly gouache (with a good seal) stay wet? Can I expect to have it for a full year without drying up? I have been using tube gouache (Maimeri and Holbein). The jelly gouache seems way cheaper. Is there a good reason not to switch to jelly? I am new to gouache.
I don't th8nk there is much if any difference in the paint. Its just the container. The name brand tubes use more expensive pigments but performance size I dont notice much difference. As far as drying up it will depend on if you leave it uncovered and how often you use it and if you spray and stir it.
I know this is unrelated but I was wondering if you could explain how to place batteries in my new “Quick Fix plus eraser” , I purchased it from Jerry’s after watching your wonderful cheeseburger colored pencil demo, I can’t even find a demo on the web, I think mine might be glued shut and maybe I should just return it 🙄. I know this is a crazy request, but I’m not ready to give up on it yet LOL. Thank you for your time, I’ve been watching your videos for years, you’re an inspiration to me! You truly are!!
I’m rewatching this so I can try to figure out how to use gouache because I tried to start the 30 days project yesterday. I got halfway through the balloon painting and had to stop… needed by mom then granddaughter. Anyway I bought the set based on your link and I think I got different colors than your Annigoni set. I tried putting in the same order. Hopefully I will learn how to use these… do I add water like watercolor or acrylic? IDK they seemed thick or sorta dry while I was painting on the paper
There are so many that they are similar. More corals on miya and more teal colors in annigoni but the colors in moth sets mix well so i don't think there is a color you can't mix.
If there’s more plastic to make the container, it will weigh more. It’s hard to tell how accurate these really are if they’re already full and they’re in two different types of containers. One looks bigger, but it also accommodates for the corner being ‘cut’ off.
Loved the review. I just discovered gouache and I’m in love with it. I too like to see my colors all out at once so this will be perfect. I’ll definitely be purchasing it. I do have a QUESTION though. How bad is it if I were to use the outside top of the lid as a palette ?
i've never used gouache, only watercolors, so questions: do the jelly gouaches dry hard like watercolors do when put out into a palette? is gouache rewettable when dry on paper? what is the difference between tube gouache and the jelly form? are they archival?
Thanks for the review. I have only used gouache white with watercolor. My concern, especially with gelly gouache, is the mess I would make with it. I already put my hands in my watercolors. Yikes! Would it be practical to get a wet pallet or pallet with a good seal to store poured out gouache from these cups (or tubes)? Tfs.
I think your favorite artsy gouache set has been bought out by Arteza. There is a similar looking set on Amazon. Also an art whale jelly gouache with individual lids….it looks like the Miya set.
I just got this pallete for my birthday and I was scared because I can't find anything about this brand and when I tried them they were very transparent I'm so sad. I can't afford a big Miya himi gouache set... Any tips?
When I'm painting with these palettes... can I leave the lid open? I feel like I would be so nervous that they will dry out... oh man they're so beautiful and matte I love them
I purchased the Himi last year and it's kind of meh for me. Are they supposed to dry hard as a rock? So I have been looking for another set, so thank you for your timely and thoughtful review. I swear you know what's going on in my hamster wheel driven brain.
😆 I actually let a set dry on purpose but I was able to reconstitute it and I'll have a video on that in a couple of weeks. It's a tedious process tho!
@@thefrugalcrafter so I got my new gouache set today, per your recommendation. Is there any way possible that you can list how you set up your pallette? I do understand it's all personal but for me still trying to figure out how to set one up I would prefer to follow somebody else's lead. I also spent 3 hours last night reconstituting my Himi palette. I used a combination of water and glycerin, and lots and lots of stirring. I put plastic wrap over the top on the inside of the top and I put it in two Ziploc style bags. I think I'm going to perhaps transfer the Himi gouache into a good sealed up travel palette. So thank you again for the very insightful review. I'm still going to watch the review on how to reconstitute these jelly gouache paint sets.
I have a video coming with my DIY antifungal moisturizing spray for gouache and how to reconstitute dry cups so no worries if you have these. You van keep them usable!
I received this same set last week. I haven't opened up the paints yet, but the case has a broken corner. I have been debating on whether or not to return them. I am not sure if the corner of the case being cracked will actually affect the paint. The lid works though. LOL
@@thefrugalcrafter the lid is ok. It’s the corner of the bottom piece. I’m thinking it will be ok because it has the foam in the lid that will keep it sealed. I did contact Amazon but have not received a response.
There's a 24 set of gouache that is shaped just like the annigonni set, it's called artkey?? It'd be interesting if these could fit into the 24 pallet case, because then ppl could mix and match, especially if they don't have the space for the 56 set on their desk. Also, that set has a similar foam top and latch and handle :0! Just thought I'd add this here in case others own both and can tell us XD
Are there any sets lower priced but still "okay'ish"? My income won't allow for what's considered a "less expensive" price range for good gouache unfortunately.
Oh yes! Do you want a jelly gouache or tubes? The arteza tube set if 24 is great and the arrtx or himi set of 18 or 24 is great and around $20-$25 I think. Honestly I don't find too much difference.
that is so... many.... colors.... dear god.... I've been trying to use up my Arrtx gouache lately and its pretty opaque already (used it on black paper for the last project I did) but I did have to use 2 layers with some of the colors... having something more opaque sounds amazing... but that is just too many colors, too much paint /falls over in exhaustion. (and amazon doesn't have 24 count box in stock :( on the other hand.... I don't need any more paint /slaps hand away from buy button)
I am fairly new to art and all of it’s mediums. 😜Retirement has allowed me time! I would be interested to learn about gouache. You can achieve opacity with acrylic paint and transparency with watercolors. Why gouache? I really am not trying to be negative, just wanting to learn more about this medium. What does gouache bring to the table?
I am sorry if I am repeating someone else’s comment as I haven’t read them all, but in weighing the pots of paint there needs to be an allowance for any different weight in the plastic pots. I think that is causing the differences.
It's definitely an issue with some although a viewer told be here latched perfectly. Luck of the draw I guess. The artsy/annigoni palette seems to be more rugged tho.
Me: “I’m not going to buy this, but I’ll watch the video anyway.” Also me: (watches half the video) “SOLD!” Excited to try these now. I have a small set of the Himi gouache that dried up (awful lid that didn’t latch). I subsequently lost interest in using them, but I did love the convenience of the cups. The number of colors and the nicer lid has sold me on this set. Hopefully it lives up to my expectations!
Opacity is so important for gouache, so it’s great to see them performing like this. I will refer people to this video when they ask me about jelly gouache!
Thanks Sarah!
I needed more gouache, but I'm on a tight budget, so I ordered these! I'm excited, thank you for the review

The plastic packing looks more on the 1.4 cups than the 1.3 cup. Love it when you swatch and test products. Thank you! 🥰🤩🥰
How does gouache compare to tempura paints? Same or different, Lindsay?
Similar but thicker and more opaque

After watching your review I had to go out of course and buy the large set of jelly Guasch and oh boy are they gorgeous! I didn’t find that they were a huge pain in the butt to open but I lived through it! Now the fun begins!!
Enjoy
Cool!
Which arrtx are smelly? The ones in the tin or jelly cups? I don't have a small in either set.
Good idea!
Aww, thank you:) it will definitely be cheaper than making your own :)
Wow that's huge. Thanks Lindsay 💜
Very tempted to get this set. I've bought artists acrylics and watercolours but feel a bit intimidated by them. Thinking I may be better off with a set like this that takes me back to childhood painting where the stakes are lower. Thanks for the great review!
Thank you, Lindsay
Press and Seal brand wrap makes for a good sealer over your palette if you get all the sides pressed down. However, if it touches the paint, it can make a big mess some may not care to deal with if they’re not careful. If you peel it off straight back and set it aside while painting and line it back up when you’re done it with it, it can be reused. You can also use this as an extra barrier so if the lid won’t close, it will still keep your paints wet.
Thanks Lindsay!
SAY! I tried a translator app I use often and all I did was point my phone camera at the cups and WA LA! The all thing is translated.
Great information Lindsay. I always appreciate your honest reviews. I would like a set with half the amount of all the colors.
You might consider tube sets as well. Or one of the 24 Jelly cup sets form another company. There are probably reviews. I'll have a video on the miya ones i have soon.
@@thefrugalcrafter I'll wait but tubes might be a better choice but love looking at all those wonderful colors!
Good analogy!
Thanks for the tip!
You are soooo AWESOME!!! I just got this same gouache palette today. Mine is kinda dry, even though the paint inside was thoroughly sealed. Should I send it back to Amazon for a replacement?
If you just bought it and it's drying out improbably would.
I' ve been looking for anew set. So I think that, I may try these out.
So much fun to watch you play with these! Is there any lightfastness information on any of these paints?
Not that I can find
I don’t need these as I have yet to use the first set I bought, but that really is a pretty color palette when you swatch it out!
Yes, you can use the same brushes. I find golden taklon brushes ate great for gouache.
I will post a video on reconstuting the hard jelly paint.
@@thefrugalcrafter
I've tried Himi and wanted them to be more opaque. Ended up tossing it after it dried out for the second time. These look better. Do they come in a smaller size? As fun as it is to have so many colors, I probably won't use them all.
I feel the same. It's too many colours.
I wish they did. The old artsy 24 set was ideal and it was the same company.
@@thefrugalcrafter I suppose I could put some in a smaller container like the gouache one you recently reviewed. But I'm still on my no-buy till July 1st.
The Want Monster 👹 just woke up and raised it's head. Like when I open the treat cupboard.
I like that they have lids and stickers. If you think of it would you let me know how you like them after using it for a while?
@@thefrugalcrafter Of course. It is a rather expensive set. But i really liked my original Himi 18 and there are so many other sets to choose from since then. If it compares it would be the ultimate upgrade.
@@spiritsjoy you get twice as much paint so it's probably comparable.
@@spiritsjoy thank you!
I might eventually have to get that one. The gouache looks really opaque, and that is much more affordable for the quantity.
What website can I get the names of these colors from? The one on the cups was notnice website.
I haven't but it will probably work fine.
Does this set offer pigment information? I remember your review of the Artxx set, where you were so happy that pigment info was available. Thanks for the thorough review. As always, very detailed and insightful.
Sadly not that I could find.
I love the getting scientific section. More please! Hehehe
There are browns like a burnt number and red iron oxide color as well as beiges
Red with green makes browns..more reds make more burn Siena like brown, with more green it’s more like raw Siena brown.
I have two questions:
1- what is the difference between jelly gouache and tube gouache?
2- how long does the jelly gouache (with a good seal) stay wet? Can I expect to have it for a full year without drying up?
I have been using tube gouache (Maimeri and Holbein). The jelly gouache seems way cheaper. Is there a good reason not to switch to jelly? I am new to gouache.
I don't th8nk there is much if any difference in the paint. Its just the container. The name brand tubes use more expensive pigments but performance size I dont notice much difference. As far as drying up it will depend on if you leave it uncovered and how often you use it and if you spray and stir it.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you! I will have to try it!
I think you pull off the collar and then the barrel splits apart.
Thank you for the tip, I tried that but I will give it another try. Hopefully mine isn’t glued shut.
Got it open, works good!
As hard as the foil on the Artsy pods may have been to remove, the good thing is that you only have to do it once!
Yup!
Yes, you may need to add water (a spray mist work great) to get them to flow.
@@thefrugalcrafter thanks Lindsay, you are so helpful. I love all your classes and tutorials. I hope I’m not bugging with all my questions 😘
Is there a significant difference between the Art Whale gouache set that is sold with caps?
I don't know
Quick question, do the antigonni colors
'match' the miya himi colors or are they generally different from each other? Thx love the swatching!
These are really pretty. How do you keep all these supplies straight? I’m often baffled by my much less collection. 😫
I have a well organized supply room. I often compare products so I have many items on hand but it better than relying on memory which can be faulty.
Loved the review. I just discovered gouache and I’m in love with it. I too like to see my colors all out at once so this will be perfect. I’ll definitely be purchasing it. I do have a QUESTION though. How bad is it if I were to use the outside top of the lid as a palette ?
In theory it will work but the underside will have paint on it and probably make a mess.
Do you have a non-Amazon link? I’m Australian and the link isn’t available in the Australian Amazon store
I don't, sorry
i've never used gouache, only watercolors, so questions: do the jelly gouaches dry hard like watercolors do when put out into a palette? is gouache rewettable when dry on paper? what is the difference between tube gouache and the jelly form? are they archival?
Yes to the first 2 questions and the only difference I see between tube and jelly cup gouache is the container. The paint seems identical.
Do the cups from the new set fit in the old palette?
Thanks for the review. I have only used gouache white with watercolor. My concern, especially with gelly gouache, is the mess I would make with it. I already put my hands in my watercolors. Yikes!
Would it be practical to get a wet pallet or pallet with a good seal to store poured out gouache from these cups (or tubes)?
Tfs.
I wouldn't store it that way but for putting it out for painting over a couple of days wold be great!
I think your favorite artsy gouache set has been bought out by Arteza. There is a similar looking set on Amazon. Also an art whale jelly gouache with individual lids….it looks like the Miya set.
can u make comparison for annigoni and himi if they really different from each other
I have already, he anniginni are more opaque and pigmented in my opinion.
I just got this pallete for my birthday and I was scared because I can't find anything about this brand and when I tried them they were very transparent I'm so sad. I can't afford a big Miya himi gouache set... Any tips?
That's weird. It was the annigoni brand, try stirring them and don't add water.
@@thefrugalcrafter ok I'll try thank you very much
When I'm painting with these palettes... can I leave the lid open? I feel like I would be so nervous that they will dry out... oh man they're so beautiful and matte I love them
You can. I mist them with water while using and when I close the palette. No issues.
@@thefrugalcrafter I look forward to it. They dried hard and cracked almost immediately.
How do you feel the Himi from drying out? I have the same pallet and want to start using it but an not sure how to keep it wet as you did.
LOL
Maybe they can send a new lid?
@@thefrugalcrafter the lid is ok. It’s the corner of the bottom piece. I’m thinking it will be ok because it has the foam in the lid that will keep it sealed. I did contact Amazon but have not received a response.
10% off coupon for this set on Amazon right now!
I'm not sure
Are there any sets lower priced but still "okay'ish"? My income won't allow for what's considered a "less expensive" price range for good gouache unfortunately.
Oh yes! Do you want a jelly gouache or tubes? The arteza tube set if 24 is great and the arrtx or himi set of 18 or 24 is great and around $20-$25 I think. Honestly I don't find too much difference.
Do you leave the squishy material on the lid?
Yes, it keeps them from drying out
So which are odor free, please.
Great video.
I think the miya are but these are low oder
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you.
that is so... many.... colors.... dear god....
In my opinion it looks nicer than acrylics and you can rework and blend an area after drying. Much more enjoyable than acrylics to me.
At Amazon AUS they're $111, but still might get them. That's $USD70.
How do you let your gouaches not dry out?
Spray with a mix of water with a bit of glycerin and alcohol.
@@thefrugalcrafter Ty - yes, i watched your clip the very next day!
I hope this brand makes a smaller palette. I don't have the space for a palette this large
They used to have a wonderful 24 palette.
I just found an Arteza 24 gouache set that looks very similar to the artsy at Michael's and picked it up.
The upgrade you need is ten drops of gum Arabic in each pot. Use a coffee frother to mix it up.
Keeps them from cracking and molding as badly
It can make it more shiny and translucent tho. Gum arabic doesn't keep it from drying, glycerin will tho.
I am sorry if I am repeating someone else’s comment as I haven’t read them all, but in weighing the pots of paint there needs to be an allowance for any different weight in the plastic pots. I think that is causing the differences.
Good point! I didn't think of that!
Huh, my Miya set doesn't latch properly either. I guess that's a thing.
It's definitely an issue with some although a viewer told be here latched perfectly. Luck of the draw I guess. The artsy/annigoni palette seems to be more rugged tho.
Am I the only person that prefers jelly gouache to be slightly dried out? With fresh cups I always get way too much paint on my brush
I think it's personal preference. I prefer dry gouache for plein air painting.
Did you realy just turned that cup on top of your paints? Karma would kick my butt so bad if I did that :P:P:P:P
The miya one IS hard to close. It’s because they didn’t taper the seal edge inward. Bad case design.
put a piece of wax paper over the top before putting the lid on.
I bought this on your recommendation then realized I could have gotten it free from Amazon vine. Oops
Oh shoot
Sighs jealous as the annigoni aren't available in uk
Maybe the same paint is under a different name?
Ohno! You put the lid on upside down already..
They are lined up, it's fine, i have used it since filming and there is no mixups
I thought the same thing- glad to hear it was good
Looks like I will be enjoying the new set when I sell some of my designs 🥹, thank you Lindsay your the best!
Me: “I’m not going to buy this, but I’ll watch the video anyway.”
Also me: (watches half the video) “SOLD!”
Excited to try these now. I have a small set of the Himi gouache that dried up (awful lid that didn’t latch). I subsequently lost interest in using them, but I did love the convenience of the cups. The number of colors and the nicer lid has sold me on this set. Hopefully it lives up to my expectations!
You can almost always reconstitute gouche as long as it's not acryl gouche
