This is scientifically wrong, if you drink when you are thirsty that's too late, you are already dehydrated and in the long run it's devastating for your health and in older adults the sensor for the lack of fluids is not as sensitive meaning they are already dehydrated before they fell thirsty. You are free to drink in every position, be it sitting or standing and you can also drink after meals or during meals as studies shown when we drink water after meals the water gets absorbed and utilised better by cells than taken on an empty stomach as most of the water ingested gets expelled from the system shortly after
