Often I read comments about people not wanting youtube channels to cover controversial topics- like the state of the world is in good condition, but it's not. Please be open to different perspectives and don't reduce a narrative to "libtard propaganda" because it doesn't align with your views. So that also means not letting Vox be the only place you get news from because then you have a limited scope of opinions that differ from yours, and thats a political echo chamber (which is bad).
Meanwhile 100 k+ of women in poor countries are protesting against wearing a hijab because it does oppress them. But since these women who live in American who don't face oppression because they don't live amongs people from their region, religion, they live amongs Americans and they don't face such oppression it's easy for them to be an image of tolerance. If you look at the bigger picture it's rather depressing.
That's interesting, my first thought was that the woman in this story empowering the hijab for herself because she has the choice to both wear it or not. Kinda like taking back a symbol or word that was once exclusively used as tools to oppress others. Since I assume being a muslim is an integral part of her culture, she has the right to positively redefine symbols in her own culture. I live in the USA so I admittedly don't know a lot about hijab-based protests. The foundation of my position is based on tolerance for cultures where it's ideology isn't discriminatory or harmful to others. If there's a divide within the body of a religion on how to view a symbol like you mentioned, that's a complicated but interesting problem to tackle. But perhaps only those that live that life can properly resolve it, and not people from the "outside", since we don't know the extent of their struggle.
Imagine yourself living like a slave with a collar on your neck. You can't go anywhere without it, you can't simply talk to guys, your parents decide what you marry. You go and protest with massive numbers against wearing that collar, against all the oppression. And now imagine yourself watching the news in other side of the world about an person from your country who lives in good conditions around people who are tolerant and in a country which no such oppression. Telling everyone how this colar is good, how it is empowering, how it is their choice to wear it or not. Would you honestly think that this is respectful to the people who are suffering? If you were in that group which is suffering, which can't chose to wear it or not, in which that collar is the main symbol of the lack of freedom. I won't make any more conclusions, just look at this situations, disable your prejudices for a minute and just look at this situation from the other side.

From a practical perspective, if they turned off comments it would exacerbate the problem because they'd be accused of censorship and hated even more. Usually it's conforming to a group, using the hijab as a symbol to signal how 'virtuous' and accepting of the group norm you are. In many muslim countries women barely have a choice: either cover up or be harrassed/raped. For some women in the west without muslim heritage, I think it just makes them feel special. Perhaps this lady just sees the hijab as a cost effective alternative to pricey weaves :)
Its about modesty really. Womens hair can be a powerful symbol in society, and some would rather cover it for it to not affect them in a social setting. Its the same thing as actively wanting to dress less provocatively in general, maybe because you dont like certain types of attention or because youd like an even playing field when talking with others around you, especially of the other sex. It should always be, and usually is, a choice regardless

The hijad is something that is mandatory in a lot of the muslim world and thus a symbol of oppresion. Vox is trying really hard to make muslims look like normal persons (which they are) but is blind to some of the negative parts of the faith and makes itself look like a fool everytime it posts something like this that celebrates some minor thing (the fact that she wore a hijad instead of her medal)in order the find excuses for other problems.
the approuch of Vox is really flawed if it wants to make muslims look good then it schould focus on things where cooperation between a lot of different people (yea know real diversity) are achieving things together instead of ooooh look this person did something and is muslim arent muslims great aarent they??!!??? arent they????????!!??..... please ignore any bad news you might hear........

From a practical perspective, if they turned off comments it would exacerbate the problem because they'd be accused of censorship and hated even more. Purposefully making it harder for people to respond to their content is a massive own goal for anyone wanting to appear fair and open for discussion (regardless of whether they actually are).
From an ideological perspective, why? You don't have to read the comments, and they can be a great place for discussion. Sure there's a lot of hate, but you're really not gaining anything by taking away this platform. The majority of the people who watch these videos probably disagree with said hate anyway, so what's the harm?

Hmm, the thing about the hijab, especially the kind she's wearing is, it is a great way to physically control your body. You can contain your hair, keeping it out of your face, and giving some reassurance that you can always present some poised, uniform surface regardless of hair. Seems perfect for athletics, as long as it absorbs sweat well and isn't too hot.

I'm just saying that for a news group who claims to 'cut through the noise' and also deals with events happening on an international scale, this seems to be noise that's been taking up a large part of Vox's videos. Basically, I think it's being given greater credence than necessary for a new organization of this scale.
Especially when so many of the videos are so focused on hijabs. It seems like a petty issue in comparison to other things going on in the community.

Madison Badger If you are a proud, rational woman and you honestly studied islam a bit, you would want nothing to do with it, much less cover yourself up with a hijab. Usually it's conforming to a group, using the hijab as a symbol to signal how 'virtuous' and accepting of the group norm you are. In many muslim countries women barely have a choice: either cover up or be harrassed/raped. For some women in the west without muslim heritage, I think it just makes them feel special.
Perhaps this lady just sees the hijab as a cost effective alternative to pricey weaves :)
Its about modesty really. Womens hair can be a powerful symbol in society, and some would rather cover it for it to not affect them in a social setting. Its the same thing as actively wanting to dress less provocatively in general, maybe because you dont like certain types of attention or because youd like an even playing field when talking with others around you, especially of the other sex. It should always be, and usually is, a choice regardless
