This scene, in my opinion, makes much more of an impact if you kniw the whole story. For those that dont know, Ip Man was a very, very, kind and sweet man. He could literally destroy anybody he wanted to but never did. He pulled punches during duels so as not to seriously hurt his opponent and then would thank them for "taking it easy on me". He is them robbed of his home and dignity by the japanese invasion and suffers all manner of indignation and heartbreak but still remains gentle and kind. Then they kill his friend out of pure pettiness and he... just... fuckin... snaps. He unleashes everything in his arsenal at full power. This is the first time you see him kill and maim. And quite honestly its a little breathtaking. So sorry this was so long lol.
This^^^ Especially the way the wife catches the final moments of the fight against Miura- we literally see all that dummy training she’d seen at home used to completely reduce Ip’s opponent to a puddle of flesh. So much of this movie he has shown nothing but kindness and patience, it’s almost otherworldly when he draws the line and goes all out.
Yes, absolutely this. Also the potato he put down at the start of the fight was food that his friend had given to him while they were both starving. Ip Man came from an affluent family but was forced to do manual labor to earn a living for himself and his family after the Japanese occupation robbed them of their home and wealth. Men from his workplace were being lured to fight 'practice bouts' with Japanese soldiers, the prize if they won being a bag of rice. Ip's friend won his fight, intending to use the rice to feed his family, but was murdered before he could leave the practice hall, prompting Ip Man to avenge him. By defeating ten opponents in this fight, Ip earned ten bags of rice; but instead he only picks up the potato he had to begin with, and the one blood-stained bag of rice his friend had won, then takes the rice to his friend's family to inform them of his death.
4:13 The reason why the others didnt jump in is because of fear. By that point 2 of their colleagues have died within seconds of engaging Ip Man. If you jumped in at that moment you might get a hit on him thats true, but you might also end up dead seconds later.
fun fact donnie yen whooped 8 men in a bar harrassing his girl, him portraying ip man is legendary no one can do it better, Ip man in his time was unbeatable anyone that knows traditional wing chun knows their are so many forms and commitment too get on ip man level not even Wong shun Leung in the 2nd movie cannot beat ip he was 2nd the ip then Bruce lee know one talks about Wong Leung the talking hands
Significance of the potato: Just before Ip-man shows up to fight these 10 a friend and fellow master is killed without mercy, earlier in the day he had given that potato to Ip-man because he seemed so exhausted and weak, he gave him his ration of food, that potato to make sure he had food and was well-fed and could survive. The context of these fights was: For every opponent you defeated, you earned a sack of rice. They wanted to dehumanize a starved and demoralized Chinese people.
It was a potato in his pocket given to him by an old friend who was killed in these arranged fights. Since the Japanese had invaded and taken over that area of China in the Manchurian war the Chinese lived in poverty and food was scarce. In the fights arranged between the Japanese Karate black belts and the Kung Fu masters the prize for winning for the Chinese was a sack of rice for each Karate master beaten.
Asian Martial arts in a school is honorable. They don't jump him because each wants the credit so it is an endurance match or Gauntlet. King of the Hill. Last man standing. They take turns, but in line with what you said-thought they willing to attack from behind.-Ernie Moore Jr.
That is Lin Wan Kuen or the chain punch. It deals with center line attack. Wing Chun practitioners use it to force people out of their centerline. It is very effective.
To answer your question, it's not like a street fight where you all jump in and sucker punch from behind, these guys are trained 1 on 1 fighters, they don't gang up on a fighter, plus they have honor unlike people who street fight, most people "your boys" will all jump in. To also explain this scene, there was already blood on the ground because there was a master before ip man who tried to fight 2 fighters but lost, so the under dog of the Japanese general shot the Chinese fighter in the head because even though he lost, he still tried to take the 2 bags of rice. This ring fighting was set up by the general to put karate up against Chinese Kung fu fighters, if the Chinese fighter wins, they get a bag a rice. It's 1 bag of rice for every fighter you beat. Ip man saw this and got really pissed off and challenged 10 fighters at once to to kick their asses. He won of course but didn't want any rice, he was just pissed off. Also if you didn't know, this was during the time japan took over China in wwii.
This is easily one of my favourite films. The scene I loved the most was the fight against the 10 black belts and Ip Man absolutely destroying them. What makes it so great, and if you pay close enough attention is that Ip Man doesn’t. Get. Hit. *Once* This because of his anger with the culmination of a few things such as: learning about Lin’s death, watching Master Liu get gunned down and he, his people and family suffering at the hands of the Japanese. He isn’t fighting for the sake of fighting he’s doing it out of vengeance and for his people, he can finally release all of that pent up rage. Another important thing to remember about Ip Man is he fights his opponents and at the same time educates them, but here, if you watch the whole film, you know that he’s not here to educate these guys. Like i said, he’s here to destroy them. And he does just that. I mean it's considered to be the best fight scene of the franchise and rightfully so. It just sends chills down my spine every time I watch it
A little backstory. This happened during WW2 in Europe, and the Pacific War in Asia. The Japanese Imperial army did unspeakable things to its neighboring countries, especially towards the Chinese. (Rape of Nanking, 721 Unit etc. Think of them as the Germans in Asia, and the Chinese were Jewish) At one occasion, it got so bad even the Nazi diplomats in China started helping and hiding the locals (Imagine having the Nazi step in simple because even they cannot tolerate how brutal and barbaric the Japanese were towards Chinese) So yea tensions has been high even till today (Unlike the Germans, the Japanese government never apologized for its atrocities and continue to omit them from their history teachings.) Before this fight, there was another master who was engaging the black belts. Rule was one bag of rice if you beat one, dude had to feed his family so after beating one, he tried taking on three more for more rice, and he lost. After surrendering, he walked towards that first bag of rice that he won, only to be shot down by the 4-eyes general (Hence the blood on it) Ip Man, who was there for the same reason, saw the whole thing and got very angry since that master was a known friend. That le to this scene, hopefully that helps
6:37 The last man is definitely having a “rock and a hard place” moment. He either runs in and gets taken apart like abstract art and possibly killed, or he runs away and gets shot by Mr.TriggerHappy up in the rafters.
The rest of the people are watching intimidated. They're afraid. I've been apart of jumping people and if you saw one man serving up anyone he gets his hands on you not quick to run up either 🤣😂
It was a sweet potato, his lunch from his job. They took them to try and earn rice by fighting. They killed his student when he tried to take the rice he actually won, because he tried to fight 2 people and lost
Fun fact: when master ip was doing his signature move on that last guy he was punching his nose bone into his brain insta death and one ticket to the nether world from mincraft
its the last thing that you said that puts the nail in there coffin for the 10, the moment they called unit 1,3,5 and it was at the moment they fucked up!!!!
1:24 ideally there's a lot he doesn't like but not in a place to do anything. Ideally Learning Chinese Kung Fu you don't fear fighting a certain level of skill or he has a plan and he can see handling ten with bad treatment He wants to vent and would be killed for beating one outside. They were just a moment ago bad to his people. He wants to hand-out a beat-down.-Ernie Moore Jr
i don't know if it was exactly like this but ip man who did this kicked ass but like in most street fights always keep you distance or just don't even bother because you never know if they are carrying or have a knife at hand the best fight is with your hands
If you had watched the entire movie you would understand more why he wanted to fight 10 karate black belts. When the Japs invaded China during WW2, food was scarce for the Chinese people. What Ip Man had in his pocket was a piece of rotten bread. Hunger made the Chinese eat anything.
donnie yen is a real light badass bruh. in hong kong his girl was getting harassed in a club he tried to be peaceful and leave but they followed him and started a fight he put nine of them in the hospital. check it out its real
I saw a fight where these 2 dudes got jumped and they whooped all I think it was bout 6 to 7 people they dawg walked all of them lol. When somone really know how to fight and the rest don't it can be done
🤦 What is up with you a few of you guys calling Ip Man, "Eye Pee Man"? His name is exactly as it is spelled, like normal names. There is no space or periods between/after the "I" and/or "P." He actually went by the name "Yip Man" because he was born in Foshan (in Guangzhou formally Canton), which in that area a different Chinese dialect called "Cantonese" was primaraly spoken there. The same Chinese dialect was and still is spoken in Hong Kong where Yip Man escaped to. So he was most certainly not called "Why Eye Pee Man" it's justy pronounced as it is spelt. Mandarin is simply what Chinese dialect is most often used and in tern spelt the way it sounds. Though this movie was made in Cantonese.
You're right about multiple attackers waiting their turn. I've been attacked by multiples 3 times in my life. First time police saved my life as the first punches were thrown. Second time they were dummies and ACTUALLY TOOK TURNS attacking me, which is how I survived (I have a martial arts background). Third time... they attacked my friend, I went for the attacker, and then before my fist could withdraw, 4 fists from the side connected with my face at about the same time. On video my head bobbled around as they kept hitting me, I had no chance of recovery, then a fat one sucker punched me from the side and I fell down. Still looking for that fat guy. But where was I. Oh yeah. The scene is beautiful in cinematic sense, and in emotional sense, based on what happened before... but it's absolutely not realistic, because they do wait their turn constantly.
This scene, in my opinion, makes much more of an impact if you kniw the whole story. For those that dont know, Ip Man was a very, very, kind and sweet man. Intellectual property man. My favourite movie.
Man is real; and this scene is pretty close to real. Anyone who knows anything that ends Kune Do will actually tear apart another human if provoked.
Like; Tiger is also a real thing. I WILL go for your eyes if I think there’s any universe I don’t have to use minimum effort.
Its a safety thing. At most 4 people can fight one person at the same time. Its a circumference thing.
