Fun fact: The actor of Ip Man actually beat down eight thugs as they harassed his girlfriend. Donnie tried to make it peacefully solved but the gang started the fight. However, he managed to beat them down with real Wing Chun, and the most shocking thing is: he punched even faster in reality compared to the film.

Not the Wing Chun part though. I think he probably used mma or some other form of fighting style because he hadn't quite learned Wing Chun yet in the 90s. He started picking up Wing Chun and kept practicing it when he did the Ip Man films.

Ip man always had a very respectful way of fighting throughout the entire trilogy, but this fight really showed just how dangerous he was. He wasn't just defeating opponents, he was taking them out of the fight ASAP. There is no doubt this is a real fight from the very first hit when he stomps the Japanese fighter's face into the floor.

I love that he covers his fist with hia hand at the start and end of the fight. In martial arts this sort of bow symbolizes peace (the open hand) over violence (the fist). It's a respectful way of him saying "I don't want to fight, but you leave me no choice".

    • @darksydelycan85
      @darksydelycan85 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's a 2 side banter to the yin/yang bow
What u mentioned is definitely accurate and is usually taught the left open hand(peace, soft, internal) over the right fist hand(violence, hard, external) as a means of respect as you mentioned
Now if the fist hand is cupping over the peaceful hand........that usually means that the practitioner has very violent intent for whoever they are going up against

I must emphasize that the dialogue in most part of KungFu movies are spoken in Cantonese , not typical Chinese , Cantonese cannot communicate with typical Chinese(Mandarin) . Cantonese is also the mother language of almost any well-known Chinese movie stars like Jackie Chan , Bruce Lee(Bruce Lee didn't understand how to speak Mandarin) , Donnie Yen and so on . A lot of dramatic characters also speak Cantonese including Ip Man.

While i wouldn't doubt that Ip Man was an exceptional and inspirational individual, i would advice everyone not to buy into the legends.
Ip Man and especially Bruce Lee are easily the most overhyped martial artists in history and that despite the fact that their career as fighters (professional or otherwise) is basically non existent or at least not provable.
They are both rather small (both in height and mass) as well, which is never a good thing in fighting.
Most of the experienced modern fighters will tell you that both Ip Man and Bruce Lee most likely wouldn't have much success in the modern world of fighting, especially not above their weight class and not in mma.
And a real fight without rules against a heavyweight mma, boxer, muay thai fighter, etc. on the streets would turn out real bad.

This scene, in my opinion, makes much more of an impact if you kniw the whole story. For those that dont know, Ip Man was a very, very, kind and sweet man. He could literally destroy anybody he wanted to but never did. He pulled punches during duels so as not to seriously hurt his opponent and then would thank them for "taking it easy on me". He is them robbed of his home and dignity by the japanese invasion and suffers all manner of indignation and heartbreak but still remains gentle and kind. Then they kill his friend out of pure pettiness and he... just... fuckin... snaps. He unleashes everything in his arsenal at full power. This is the first time you see him kill and maim. And quite honestly its a little breathtaking. So sorry this was so long lol.

From the start when he had sparring matches with fellow masters, he would hold back his power (but not his skill). Ip Man doesn't brag his wing tsun and only uses it for healthy matches. But this scene, damn! He would disable literally by breaking legs and arms.

This was the only time Ip Man went full power in the movies. Even though he legit fought in the other movies, he never went 100% like he did here

So many people mispronounce it. Maybe the word 'man' at the end makes people see it as 'batman', 'spiderman", etc. It actually 'ip-mun'. Well..its not a big deal anyway...cheers 😄

Donnie Yen is a legit black belt in Karate, Muay Thai, Judo, master in spear, katana and other weaponry, Parkour practicioner, BJJ. And he action sscene choreographer, movie director and plays piano very well. Donnie Yen is a huge fan of Bruce Lee: the serie "Ip Man" is a tribute to Bruce Lee's master, Ip Man, who created his own style, faced tirany and hunger when Japan invaded China, and influenced a whole generation in Martial Arts.

U keep some referring to the war as “some war”. The war u r referring to is literally World War 2 my man. Japan invades China and China becomes occupied by japan which explains this setting

I love the way Chinese cinema always tries to make Karate look bad lol. I know its a nationalistic thing. Still. Can't help but shake my head Somtimes. Still love the action. Very entertaining to watch.

No, most Chinese audiences don't accept it. We think it boasts too much of ancient martial arts. And the new generation of Chinese is not proud to see the overwhelming contrast.
