I was there !! what a fantastic one day concert at the former Ontario Motor Speedway. Tens of thousands attended. Was able to get not too far from the stage. The had a few towers set up with tens of speakers. The sound was great. DP was not the closing band, it was Emerson Lake Palmer, who in my opinion were louder than DP. Hard to believe ! Perhaps after several hours of the best rock, and the air filled with pot smoke.. .hahaha.. my earring became super sensitive. Blackmore played brilliantly, while destroying a few Strats and Marshall cabs. Great classic rock tone. Unforgettable concert. I've seen quite a few famous rock bands since, but none came close to DP at the Cal Jam.

I think Ritichie's whole schtick for years has been "there's nothing I do that's remotely as crazy as the culture." he's actually fairly calm. notice when he destroyed - for the then - HUGE price o' 10K - a network TV camera, he was at GREAT pains to not injure the cameraman. Ritchie's a cool guy and if my bladder could hold it, I'd have some beers with him. Interesting cat.

IIRC he was mad at the cameraman because he was trying to get the camera in front of the band(middle of the stage) the whole gig, and Ritchie was constantly blocking him because he wanted the people who had paid to go to the concert to see something, he blew up the speakers because someone from the organizers said "make an amazing ending" or something along those lines.

Esto desató la ira de Ritchie Blackmore el cual lo consideró una humillación en contra de su banda. Ritchie se encerró en su camerino sin querer salir al escenario. Luego de intensas gestiones por parte de la producción lo convencen de actuar, sin embargo, Blackmore ya había ideado la forma de vengarse la cual era la misma que había utilizado en contra de Yes en 1970. Ritchie le encargó a su roadie personal que bañara de gasolina varios de los cabezales de amplificación. Cuando la banda estaba interpretando el último tema (Space Truckin'), Blackmore dio la señal a su roadie para que prendiera fuego a los amplificadores, luego dejó inutilizable una cámara de TV, de la cadena ABC, al golpearla con el mástil de su guitarra, la cual después lanzó al público y además destruyó varios amplificadores arrojándolos al foso del escenario. Mientras Blackmore realizaba su espectáculo, el resto de la banda seguía tocando en medio del intenso humo y las explosiones, lo cual marca el clímax de todo el show. Esto fue del agrado de muchos fans que incluso festejaron los incidentes. Después del concierto la banda tuvo que realizar una espectacular huida en helicóptero para evitar ser detenidos por la policía.
Es cómo dices pero, además, también querían que la banda salieran a tocar una hora antes del anochecer, como estaba estipulado en el contrato. Lo consultó con el asistente de luces y éste le dijo que siendo todavía horas diurnas, el show de luces no iba a ser tan llamativo cómo en horas nocturnas. Es por lo que se encabronó más aún y se negaba a salir de su camerino, de hecho, si Lord no lo llega a convencer, se hubiera ido del concierto sin tocar... ¡Genio y figura!
Si, ciertamente fue así en el miticico Concierto California Jam de 1974 como anécdota adicional decir que el famoso arco iris tras la disolución de MKIII se lo llevo para su grupo experimental RAIMBOW
Con todo respeto pero como se les ocurrió dejar el cierre a ELP por encima de Deep Purple.......Deep Purple estaba en otra liga por encima de ELP, tuvo razón la enojarse Blackmore.........por otro lado Ritchie siempre le mostró mucho respeto a Jon Lord quien lo convenció de salir a tocar
