dude look how far things have come
spicy110 spicy!
Especially now!
this kind of mod is best thought of as a supporting mod, in other words, good cooling of the compressed air means there is less chance of detonation, pinging, engine damage etc. How much more power you get depends on other mods like exhaust and boost etc...
@500hpb20 GTiRs are a classic and adored by those that appreciate their boxyness and nugget like shape. And they are AWD.
Watching in 2020! Absolutely mental how far things have gone for you guys. You deserve every part of it!
First time Moog plays the intercooler!
@jawbreaker480 No, but it is a supporting mod that allows other parts of the turbo system to run more boost efficiently, ending up with more power.
@DeHox It's more a supporting mod than a performance mod, but allows you to safely run more power than the stock TMIC.
I love going back and seeing the old show vs the new episodes
now these guy's have really taught me allot about modifying car's, and also helping me in my career.
7 years ago. Oh wow it went by fast!
9 years ago now!
10 years
13 years 2 months and 27 days
I like the way you did the front bumper where you sort of hid the fmic behind the standard bumper it looks great, way better then those pulsars where people butcher the front bumper good work. Keep the videos coming they are all well put together.
@astroid911 Yes the intercoler is part of the turbo system
Very nice what you have done with it, you used to see a fair few of these about but now they’ve disappeared of the roads 😢
@MrSubielove The car with Supercharger and Turbo is our Nissan March SuperTurbo.
@hondasilvia yep but its complicated, there is a new VW golf that does it, and the march superturbo covered in episode 15 all show how its done
@500hpb20 Definitely not slow. It's the most powerful SR20 Nissan ever made.
@IceCold720 Yes this will be coming soon!
Agreed. I'd watch it! It gives it the DIY approach that anyone can handle.
The red GT-R in the background at 0:35 must have been brand new, this was filmed only a few months after the R35 GT-R first went on sale
@MrSubielove Nissn Pulsar GTiR
_"welcome to another episodes of mighty car mods"_ *lol*
mighty car mods is the best i learn something with every video!
Can you guys do an episode which compares SIDE mount to FRONT mount intercoolers?
There needs to be another mythbusting episode because the internet is currently all messed up about the topic.
wow crazy man it only seem like yesterday you guys started moding cars almost ten years since the gti-r :O
@mightycarmods the car i have! and just ordered my fmic so i got the guide and everything to do! You guys did a really good job on the body kit (front bumper) looks really nice!
Intercoolers are for all engines, they cool down the air charge and allow more air into the engine because it's denser due to the loss of heat.
Though, they do complement turbochargers and superchargers quite well as the compression heats up the air.
@skrach1000 Its called a Blow-off valve mate.
You need a turbo for it to work and you have to get rid of the diverter valve and install the Blow off valve through the pressurized intake pipe.
Really useful video. Ill be doing this to my pulsar in the up coming months.
You'd be surprised, even some owners of performance cars don't know what they're doing; my Starlet GT Turbo had a front mount intercooler simpy bolted to the front crash beam and piping which led to nowhere simply cable tied in place. The factory top mount intercooler, meanwhile, was still in place.
Yeah same i swear those things are made for the mountains in the winter. But i still love my 08 LGT more than anything
Wow, 300hp in a tiny hatch like that! So sick. I wish we had them in the states.
@TheSheepherd good question yes, it is an issue. thats why they don't have it there in the first place. only put a front mount on if you need to . check other posts
That all depends on the aspiration of the vehicle in the first place. For example, a WRX Sti can accept many new turbochargers without any other mods.
Turning a N/A to boosted aspiration however entails the former
@astroid911 When the air is sucked in by the turbo it is superheated as it goes round so fast. The intercooler is there to cool down the air taken in as cold air works much better in an engine than hot air.
WTF, I saw the vintage look of the video and clicked on it without realizing it was MCM, ha ha, 😂🤣... wow, btw I do like that little pocket rocket, sick ride!
the intercooler is there to cool down the under pressure air from a turbo/super charger, naturally aspirated air is not hot enough to really need an intercooler.
Ok... The intercooler and the turbo are two separate components, which can be modified separately. The intercooler provides cooler air to the engine (the colder the air, the denser it is, the more to combust. The more to combust, the bigger the bang, the more power). Auto cars can be upgraded. ECUs (computers) need to be upgraded and tuned to match upgrades to get best possible performance, and to make the engine as efficient as possible :)
Hope that helps.
I like this infotainment guys, thanks alot for making it! :) Bigups from Sweden.
Yeah i live in colorado and would love a Gti-r since there all wheel drive and i did see one online that was an hour away from me but i had no clue what the process is on owning a JDM car in the us.
Nice vid, just wondering what brand intercooler kit did you use and what happens to the windshield washer reservoir?
primer wont stop rust use duragal on that bumper support :) and replace the tow hook if that baby has to go on a tilt and slide its a must have and will save a lot of hassle
GTi-R's are SO super sexy. Too bad we don't have them here in the States...aside fromt he few imported ones.
I do have a '92 Sentra (Sunny, for the JDM folks) SE-R with a Bluebird turbo motor.
Cool show guys...subscribing.
over 8 years wow ye have come a long way
while what you are saying is true. The major advantage of running a larger intercooler is that it allows more time or more surface area for the air too cool back to ambient air temp. Obviously you are never going to cool the air any more than how hot it is outside.
By providing more surface area you then can run more boost as the extra air that is hotter than before (more boost = hotter air). can cool back to ambient.
Front mounts are best used with increased boost to prevent detonation.
You CAN put a turbo on a N/A engine. You dont have to do any internal mods either. I have a 4 cyl pickup truck N/A. I did a custom made turbo setup without even opening the valve cover.
yes it can interfere, solution is to get a better radiator or put the fmic somewhere else. I wouldn't expect much reliabilty if your tuning anyway.
Hi there, nice work, quick question; due to the longer piping and bigger intercooler, didnt that create turbo lag?? or is it an upgraded turbo? obviously there is more flow at higher RPMS theremore more top end power, how is it at 0-3000rpms?
lol funny story my mate in tassy took me for a drive in his gtir and i said it looks like the gtir off mighty mods and it is this one it goes really well now top job guys
Would a front mount intercooler work on a mid engine car? The radiator is in the front, but it seems like trying to run intake piping to the front and back wouldn't really work. It has a side mount from the factory right inside the side intake.
Mighty Car Mods due to increased plumbing was there any effect on boost pressure ?
@hondasilvia they will never run at the same time, well not produce boost together, superchargers provide instant boost until the turbo has spooled up enough to take over with no lag :) they use a bypass valve to do this
hell good idea to be angle grinding that close to your paint work
I was still in grade school man the memories
a large front mount can take some of the cooling effect front the radiator. i have a large front mount on my gts;t r33 and i have not noticed ant difference. i have noticed great drift/ circuit car have a v ; mount radiator/ intercooler. but sounds hard and expensive, but this is the best way to do it.
Problem is that engine heat goes up into the bottom of the intercooler, while the hood scoop brings air in from the top, then some nerdy stuff happens and it ends up not being as efficient as possible, but now that there is fmic action going on it probably isnt noticable what so ever but the hood scoop is probably venting hot air while idling and keping stationairy engine bay temps down slightly if your still awake after reading that then good for you
Did you guys have to cut through anything to get the plumbing into the engine bay?
Totally feel you man a girl that I now got her intercooler destroyed this way on her corolla
When you compress air, as a turbo does (hence the term forced induction), the air temperature rises. If you only have a turbo, your engine will overheat. Intercoolers decrease the temperature of the compressed air. Having an intercooler on a naturally aspirated engine would only make the air entering the engine cooler, which, without compression, is essentially useless because the air will probably get back to normal temperature by the time it enters the engine.
@mike29115 You don't need a tune just for a front mount. Nothing is really changing except the efficiency of the cold air in the charge piping.
It takes the hot air from the turbo then redirects through the intercooler and cools it down.
The cooler the air into the motor the less likely it is to detonate, which generally mean MORE BOOST!!
This is an air to air intercooler, there are many types you can learn about by googling it.
My all time favorite car. What a beast they can be made into. Wish I can afford one here in the states. People who do have them want 10k or more. I want it white with 500whp and vvl head. Though I've seen b13 sentra converted to awd. Some have sr20vvl with 30psi 700whp fwd.
2019 and I'm still hear....
actually a fmic cools down the compressed air from the turbo before it enters the intake of the engine
How do you know what pipes and tubes to use? is the same for any other car? or would it be different size tubes?
You don't need one. But if you want higher performance you should have one. Since cold air is more compressed the hot air, wich means more air is flowing into the engnine.
@mightycarmods
I thought putting on a more efficient inter cooler increases power without any tuning done. More oxygen means a bigger bang so more power?
where did you relocate the washer bottle and expansion tank to? and did you have much cutting to get the pipes to fit?
@mightycarmods What your saying is true but if like a pulsar gtir (top mount), Nissan 300zx (side mounts), MK3 Supra (tube and fin) your stock set up is inefficient you will gain power and reliability due to a cooler and denser charge along with the ability to use water/meth spray, larger intercooler piping and easier water/meth injection to intake mani which all add power. You actually had the best example with a top mount because in traffic it no longer acts as a heat sink, reducing its effect
no, air does not go inside the intercooler. it is simply like a big heat sink for the air that is passing thru it cooling it down.
Must of been a big rock! I might actually get a grill for my front mount just to be on the safe side, although it will look so ugly lol.
@hondasilvia Fact : Lancia was the first car company to create the Turbo, Supercharged combo.
hey mighty! what size was that intercooler?? im looking to install a front mount on my gtir and i think yours fit perfect !
How big was the performance change i just orderd a big ass intercooler for my Nissan Gazelle so what performance changes will i expect? 5 to 8 hp? i kno it dosent do that much but it looks real good.
It wont completely break it but it can start bending fins and it gets less and less efficient. The major problem I saw here was that the fmic pretty much totally blocks the radiator.
is it possible to install front intercooler to my Hona Civic 96 VTI without turbo? just the intercooler
Lol
lol
not sure if sarcasm or serious xD
Kagami Stark are you ok?
It's useless
MCM Rulez! Getting So Many Views On Season 1 Videos The Show Has Gone On A Massive Journey Yet Moog And Marty Haven't Changed One Bit ! I Watch Every Episode And The Feature Films
***JDM!!!***
@dksrival15 it's completely sealed like a radiator but for air
I've got a glanza 1.3 turbo with the standard top intercooler. Would a front mount make any difference except look wise?
sweet ride and nice intercoller!
Would an intercooler not stop air getting to your radiator and make it over-heat?
Heya MCM dudes!, Thanks for the vids there great :). I have a GTi-R and im thinking about getting a FMIC. I was wondering what ones u guys got specifically ( as it looks great ) and possibly a link to where u brought it. Thanks.
It saddens me that i have yet to find any stores that sell aftermarket parts at that range in the uk.
one question, im going to install intercooler on my car, the radiator also will be there, but what about the condenser for my aircondition? is there one of the two i will have to remove when installing my intercooler? if so which is it? to remove the radiator or the condenser?
@OwiuX Theres no point in trying to have a blow off valve when you don't really have a turbo though. Then it would be all show and no go.
@wbc564 no because the hood scoop provides circulating cool air around it which is pushes hot air out through the bottom of the engine bay. However, it is still stupid in my opinion to put an intercooler on the top instead of the front of the motor :P
"welcome to another episodes of might mods" lmao
front mounts are a good mod. if the car requires it. there is no point putting a big front mount on an otherwise stock car. a larger front mount intercooler is used to cool / dense air because it is running higher boost/ more air. if your car is running stock boost don't bother installing a large front mount it will probably make it go slower.
if you wanted to cool it down more could you have the stock intercooler and the front mount couldn't they both fit
check out the DSM racing community. there could be a lot of reasons for that auto breaking. was it the stock tranny on a 500hp car? were they launching it every time? yes of course autos have more moving parts etc, but if the gears etc are upgraded... For reliability i was saying the perfect shift every time becuase the ecu is "shifting"
for a regular daily driven car, an auto would last longer than a manual tranny simply because of who buys manuals (normally more "aggressive" driving people).
So im pretty clueless on this subject.. what exactly does an intercooler do and where does the piping start and finish?
@thewindsurfguy its not just for looks i busted my old one which was a Volvo intercooler and it does look good.. so dont go talking down to people when u dont have the full story.
Have a nice day.
Idk much or rather anything about tuning up a car so with that being said what is an intercooler?and what does it do??
Does the intercooler and turbo come together with one upgrade? what does intercooler actualy do for the car? can automatic car's be upgraded? some say that computers inside should be tuned to match upgrades? is that true?
This is so cool! i cant wait till i can work on my drive-way=D
but arent your neighbours compleaning?
would the turbo or anything in the bay need to be upgraded to run a bigger intercooler and piping ?
if I put a bigger intercooler on my golf tdi will it need remapped afterwards? x
anyone watching in 2017
'Sup?
Just watched today
Kyle Milford me, just have all the videos on auto play to get ideas on what to do when I get a classic mini
2k19
Watching in 2019
@Hass69ish Why do you want bigger piping?
By replacing the pipes into bigger you only get more lag. If you use 1,75" piping the lag should be minimal on a small petrol engine (2.0 250hp etc)
On my toyota 3.0 L4 8v diesel engine i run 2" IC piping with 1,75" exhaust manifold and 3" exhaustpipes and gets about 280bhp with a 790 cubic inch IC.. Diesels have minimal lag, but it got better. (instead of 3" intertcooler piping)
You guys were SO lucky to have the artist formerly known as Prince on your show. He never appears on a show unless he's getting paid to do it. Oh, wait, sorry...that's just Moog with short hair. Please don't ever cut your hair like this again Moog. You're confusing us. I was about to start playing Purple Rain. Lol
get some of a GTI almera with the sr20de
they should have the AD22VF brakes...(which are the GTiR brakes)
