I've always used the brass shield because it just looks cool. Nice with the holy parry ash. I only now learned it's one of the best shields in the game LOL
I mean you get the verdigris shield right before the final boss of the dlc, it is functionally the best shield in the game, cuz you dont get to use that one until ng+
You can tell Moore to be sad forever and get all his armor simply by breaking the seal at the shadow keep or just pas t Bobby village. That can be done right after meeting Moore outside of Belurat
I'd gone through the whole game hardly using a shield at all. Consort Radahn, however, was giving me major problems. Mainly because I was at level 200 with a Scadutree Blessing of 15 and I didn't really want to go fragment hunting to get to 18 or even 20. I spent hours on him trying all kinds of things. Phase 1 was fine, but phase 2 really had me seeing red. I decided to try one last attempt for the day and I wanted to see how shielding his attacks instead of trying to roll them would go. I won. I won by using the brass shield, which I hadn't even upgraded once.
I love how rusty already put the brass shield at #1 last time, and then it got a huge guard boost buff. I sure wonder what's gonna be at the top this time.. (Besides verdigris, potentially. I found that one better than fingerprint for me)
The red thorn shield description makes me wonder if the armor alternatives thing was supposed to be more fleshed out, and possibly this would've been an item that served to teach you the thorn crest, which you could then add to better shields for fire reduction boost. I mean the alternatives thing DOES modify stats, but it is also remarkably shallow. It would explain the numerous crest shields, and the frequent flavor text about magical stat-boosting rivets/paint/whatever
One (EXTREMELY niche) advantage the crest shields from the DLC have over brass is their strength requirement being in the 11-15 range instead of 16-20, comfortably putting them within *one* talisman slot of a level 1 character being able to use them, rather than needing to dedicate two. Singlehandedly let my level 1 character play around with a lot more toys than she used to be able to, especially alongside the curseblade mask's +5 dex. This is also a niche that the banished knight shield had, but serpent and wolf's specialized resistances ended up being far more useful to me in the dlc.
Curseblade mask opens up so many dex options in rl1 it’s goated. Let me use dragonscale blade with only one Talisman to boost dex and no dex physick, which was my favorite rl1 run by far.
39:52 thank you for the visual here, I listened to this the first time and thought “huh that sounds like it would be a great visual” and now I’m watching thru my second time and that made my day
As a Str/Fth Paladin main, my heart was redeemed by your frustration at the Crucible Horn Shield. And your take on the Dragonclaw Shield was unexpected but fair.
51:25 If the entire point is using Fingerprint Stone Shield as a weapon, it's still the best for that purpose. You only lose out on 20-40 AR depending on your Strength since the Fingerprint has higher Strength scaling, which is extremely negligible. It also can have its Ash of War switched out for something actually useful like Shield Bash for a very good option for blocking while you attack (though it's still worse than just using your running R1), or Shield Crash for the absolutely broken damage it deals, and the stun against lighter targets. There's also the madness buildup which isn't much, but can help in PVP.
The Blood affinity on a Str/Arc Shield Crash Fingerprint used to straight-up delete people before Shield Crash's status buildup got nerfed, and with the new DLC gear it's still very useful for making other players very unhappy. Adam Barker has a great video on the former, Gigasthiccas for the latter.
Absolutely insane that the dueling shield is as low as it is. It's not meant to be another generic offhand shield. The whole point of thrusting shields is that they're a weapon and a shield at the same time. It's meant to be two-handed to get the full use of its moveset and its static blocks simultaneously. Blocking frames during r1 recovery, during r2 windups, able to block and poke like a spear-and-shield build, deals pierce damage so you don't lose out on the counter damage buff, synergizes super well with THST insanely well because it's meant to be two-handed, guard counters do insane damage and also keep your guard up for part of the animation just like every other attack, Deflecting Hardtear is literally right there-this weapon is essentially a shield-and-spear build on crack with half to a third of the weight.
Can we just take a sec appreciate how fucking cool the graphical layouts for the equipment Rusty has in these newer videos are? Cause they're really fucking cool
I dunno...fingerprint could also do goofy stuff like a bleed build (bleeding with shields lol) and still has affinity and arts options. You could even do stuff like barricade shield if you want on it. Sure its not the highest guard stability anymore, but its still one of the highest even to this day.
28:35 finally someone tested the shield of night! Every streamer I’ve seen try it just hits the ash, sees low damage, and gets rid of it. In reality it’s quite good when leveled to +10 and used correctly. I tore through the game in a challenge run with it in NG+1 and had no issues.
I recently used te perfumer shield for a perfumer theme build... i used it once, to parry the aging untouchable. But hey it looks kinda cool on my back
@ no lmao, it, banished knights greatsword, and the inseparable get a sexier, better light attack combo than other greatswords when two handed, one handed their moveset is the same as all the others
Weird choice to praise Verdigris for it's damage, despite the fact that the most viable method of deleting an enemy with a shield is Shield Crash, which the Fingerprint shield can get and Verdigris cannot. It's the precise reason I would rank Fingerprint above it.
I think one reason Fingerprint is lower is because the Madness buildup is basically useless and putting Shield Crash on it kinda just does the same level of damage as bonking with the shield, so it's a negligible upside? At least if I had to guess, I'm not a numbers genius tbh. At least Moore Charge has a shockwave and higher guard boost so it's got better utility, but that's kind of it. You can really just interchange the two
@@mistermaxie6487 It is definitely NOT comparable to bonking with the shield. It's so much more flexible and so good at all of the things it can do that it will never not be best in slot, and by a wide margin at that
Icon shield is awesome. Get dinged while exploring and my hero can go stand in a corner with this equipped while I check my phone and viola I'm all healed up without using a potion.
Before the patch that knocked out shield skills picking up weapon buffs the Smithscript shield was probably the 0th shield in terms of just slapping things.
I never understood the people that cried about the weapon. Wish I got to use it when it was apparently an actual good late game weapon before complainers ruined everything like usual. It’s arguably a terrible weapon now given the time you can acquire it.
Just giving my two cents no one asked about, but I really like the Icon Shield. I always put it on my back when fighting the Elden Beast (in my shield only character) or any boss I pretty much know the moveset almost entirely, Regen is really good when you only get hit once in a blue moon
The timing of this couldn't be more funny and surreal. I was looking up your previous shield video to try and pick one for the build I was starting today and then this had been posted like 30 min before. Which is EXACTLY what happened with the last shield video! Maybe I do need a VPN because I feel like my mind is being read lol!
Brass at second place... Will always be MY number one and has a special place in my hearth.....droped it at my first run as a mage :D loved it since then....
32:39 It was long before 1.14 when i did it, but i put Shield Crash on this shield and it almost always proced bleed on any enemy that could bleed in one connecting crash. An extremely fun combination, imo.
I do not think he has ever made a video specifically ranking the seals for incantation casters, but has done the staves quite a lot. I would be pretty interested in that. Also, thanks for the videos in general.
thing with the dueling shields is they're both fun for me for not using as a shield, but rather as a weapon where i can also block and counter when needed with extremely high efficiency. What I really wish though comes from the patch they received - the stamina got consumed wrong so they could block and poke, which was bad. but it was really cool as an addition to guard frames when attacking normally, where if you timed it right you could get counter damage AND block the incoming attack, especially against bosses since it sort of gave you an alternate attack window. but now it tends to get you staggered if you aren't good enough at managing your stamina.
I hope one day in one of those shots where Rusty's Messmer cosplay is in front of Bayle, Bayle is busy fighting a random enemy in his arena while Rusty doesn't acknowledge it and acts like nothing is wrong and continues the video
I just beat an all bosses run with only shields and your vid couldn't come at a better time. The nornal dueling shield is my fav though even if not for blocking.
This is one of those cases where it really should be multiple lists. People generally pick a shield within certain objectives that invalidates most of the options outright. Ranked by: blocking, damage, utility Blocking category would be ranked by resists and guard boost vs weight, mostly. Special consideration for guard counter effects, barricade, etc Utility would include random things like RTSR and turtle shield or that weird one that can parry spells. That sort of idea.
Well, my main may not have cracked the top 10, but happy to see it at 12. I will say I appreciate all the status resistance it gives across the board, on top of being just a damn sturdy shield too, and not as heavy as other options. Plus I do love the simple design adorning it.
putting Holy Ground on the sacred wooden shield (or other ultra light shield) is a nice utility that uses no fp in a catacomb to periodically top off health without using up potions, until the boss.
Fun fact about the Fingerprint shield, in case you didn't know: Infusing it with Bleed also gives its madness buildup Arcane scaling - meaning it'll build up madness faster the higher your arcane stat is, which is what makes this shield absolutely gross in PvP.
I love ECGS because it's the perfect balance of form and function being completely broken in some way. It's got great stats and great resistances, it's large enough to feel like it actually protects you without being so large that it gets in the way of looking at the game, the design is simple enough to not distract you while being detailed enough to not be boring, and black goes well with everything.
29:55 - that got me a big ole belly laugh cuz HELL YEAH i want an outer god to cook my fish sticks faster if I go to the trouble of spraypainting a baking sheet gold!
Love the video as always, but I couldn't help but notice that the final chart isn't actually correct with what the video had stated. The wolf and serpent chest shields on the chart are rated as 21st an 20th respectively, but in the video itself they were 10th and 9th. Is the final chart at the end an earlier draft of the video?
I think you’re right about it being an early draft, he called the brass shield slightly better then the blue-gold kite, but ranked it lower on the chart lol
Shields was something I didn't put much thought into initially. I simply had the brass shield because it has good physical negation and was found early from grinding at Gate Front, but then came the DLC where bosses went nuts with their combos. I dabbled in learning parry then said, fuck it, and got the Fingerprint Shield to adopt a guard counter build 😂
bro, what the fuck is this!?! your editing is so fancy. like I've been noticing an p tick but damn those results screens are crazy. keep up the steller job! also you sent my brain into a loop by having what I will assume is a mod replacing dodges with quick or bloodhounds step.
45:20 There actually *is* one more area where the banished knight shield wins out: it's strength requirement. A niche advantage to be sure, but when you're a rl1 masochist and those 2 points are the difference between needing an extra talisman slot to equip the thing or not, it's a pretty big deal.
Messmer soldier shield is my favorite. Looks amazing, great GB (especially after 1.14) and we finally have a great medium round shield. I know brass is better, but I don't care.
I did an entire all boss solo run using only banished knight related stuff, dragon cult, and draconic themed weapons. The only stats I didn't touch was Int/Arc. Beat Melania with parry only. Then later beat pre nerf Consort with parry only(storm wall not golden parry on both) as well. Oh, and I straight up can tank waterfowl dance with quarter of me stamina left. Long story short the Banished Knight Shield is goated and demands respect. It doesn't deserve this kind of slander. Thank you for your time. 😊

Jellyfish shield waaay underrated here. Unique damage buff stacks with all other buffs, 100 damage block, and weighs barely anything.
Criminally underrated channel. Rusty is a fantastic wordsmith.

It was long before 1.14 when i did it, but i put Shield Crash on this shield and it almost always proced bleed on any enemy that could bleed in one connecting crash. An extremely fun combination, imo.
I didn't even know some of these existed until today. Thanks, Rusty.
Love from a Tulock&Mango and Vaush fan!
holy shit fellow vowshite what are you doing here
@prohikikomo Doing my best to support great creators like Rusty in the algorythm : )
Ha! The fandom overlap is real
I do not think he has ever made a video specifically ranking the seals for incantation casters, but has done the staves quite a lot. I would be pretty interested in that. Also, thanks for the videos in general.
Holy fuck the adult swim merch ad actually kinda went hard
Jesus Rusty I am sitting here bored senseless. ..
Thanks!!!!
Bro.... thanks
thing with the dueling shields is they're both fun for me for not using as a shield, but rather as a weapon where i can also block and counter when needed with extremely high efficiency.
The nornal dueling shield is my fav though even if not for blocking.
the smoldering shield bit absolutely killed me.
This is one of those cases where it really should be multiple lists. People generally pick a shield within certain objectives that invalidates most of the options outright.
Ranked by: blocking, damage, utility
Blocking category would be ranked by resists and guard boost vs weight, mostly. Special consideration for guard counter effects, barricade, etc
Utility would include random things like RTSR and turtle shield or that weird one that can parry spells. That sort of idea.
Well, my main may not have cracked the top 10, but happy to see it at 12. I will say I appreciate all the status resistance it gives across the board, on top of being just a damn sturdy shield too, and not as heavy as other options. Plus I do love the simple design adorning it.
im so glad that verdigris is getting the recognition it deserves at this rate its practically the giants shield from dark souls 1 when fully upgraded
In a world without good ranking videos one man will rise above
putting Holy Ground on the sacred wooden shield (or other ultra light shield) is a nice utility that uses no fp in a catacomb to periodically top off health without using up potions, until the boss.
Worth going through the whole video for the final animation!
Fun fact about the Fingerprint shield, in case you didn't know: Infusing it with Bleed also gives its madness buildup Arcane scaling - meaning it'll build up madness faster the higher your arcane stat is, which is what makes this shield absolutely gross in PvP.
I'm eagerly awaiting an "Ranking Every Joker In Balatro" video
yo so glad you're going through everything after what i think is the final patches from the dlc, you absolute legend 😎
getting the like counter to 100 is my greatest life achievement
You kinda... You kinda should want a little more in life than that
the switch up on the black leather shield is crazy
wow, great video, extremely informative AND comically entertaining.. i love it... great job.. keep up the great work Rusty.....
Thanks for giving us our dose of rusty ranking.
Awesome video, loved the new stat page for the subject of the list!~
I love ECGS because it's the perfect balance of form and function being completely broken in some way. It's got great stats and great resistances, it's large enough to feel like it actually protects you without being so large that it gets in the way of looking at the game, the design is simple enough to not distract you while being detailed enough to not be boring, and black goes well with everything.
29:55 - that got me a big ole belly laugh cuz HELL YEAH i want an outer god to cook my fish sticks faster if I go to the trouble of spraypainting a baking sheet gold!
Blacksteel GS better be NO.1 that thing is insane, I'll come back once I've finished the video
Damn data crazy
First time I played through the DLC I got to the Abyssal Woods & the Perfumer's Shield was the only thing I had that could parry lmao
We’re back and you know its a ranking as always
25:00 that backflip was sick!
Next rank everything in Elden ring. Spirit ashes, ashes of war, enemies, quests, bosses, endings, npcs, weapons, shields, armor sets, areas, items, consumables, sites of grace, great runes, talismans, osts, color pallets, trees, spells, incantations, skyboxes, map fragments, field bosses, rune farms.
45:45 The best spot to farm it in actually has two Banished Knights that you farm over and over again.
The perfumer's shield have only one job : being part of my perfumer's run as cosplay.
The black leather shield is probably modelled after a scottish targe. It's one of the most beautiful shield designs out there.
