    Missed the announcement about Thunderbird taking over K9. Been using K9 on Android for too many years to recall... Works like a charm in meeting my simple needs (POP then IMAP). Would be happy to pay for it (once) to support the effort. Since I use Thunderbird on desktops forever too, will be eager to see how this plays out.

    Fair Email is the way to go. An E-mail App is basically unusable to me, if it doesn't feature rules to manage automatic assignment of new Mails to their respective Folders. Fair Email has been the only App I ecountered to provide this feature...

    K9 right now is very usable. There are problems with notifications but latest updates made it quite usable.

    *Is Dark Mode Good For Your Eyes?* _There is good article in hacker-news today._
    It says "Dark mode *isn’t easier to read and it doesn’t prevent eye strain.* However, in very specific circumstances it can improve battery life."

    Once they've sorted out the Android experience, perhaps they could bring it to iOS and iPadOS too... so there would be a more unified experience across all platforms!

    Something that annoys me with k9 is that email notifications are hit or miss. Sometimes I get notifications, sometimes not, sometimes inaudible but there's a msg in the notification area etc. Could be android acting up though.
    Another niggle is placing the most used button just one tap away: reply button. It's a two tap affair, which also goes for yahoo mail app. I never ever use any other button than replay or forward. Never use star, read/unread (k9) delete archive move (yahoo) in the email read screen. Also, and that goes for many other apps, no or fiddly zoom/fontsize enlargement or not able to maken them large enough.
    Button spacing on toolbars (often too close while there is plenty of space), buttons too close or even under/on android on screen system button etc. At least on 7-8" tablet.

    Hate to say it, but I do rather like Microsoft's Outlook for Android. It will be nice to have the open source options coming of age though. I do like Thunderbird for Linux.

    ...I have used thunderbird on my desktop for many years becoming quite familiar with it. There are learning curves, settings can be somewhat intimidating but the more you use it the more you like it. As for K-9 mobile transitioning to Thunderbird, the mobile app UI should mirror as much as possible the desktop version...I have tried K-9 mobile, it was to buggy. I just got tired of weekly issues to deal with...So I went back to the Samsung default email, which is simple and just works without the bugs.
    I'll wait till it becomes Thunderbird and try again...my2 ¢

      I know it's silly and superficial, but I can't help it. I don't like apps that look like they were designed 10 years ago.

    Fairemail is much better in my opinion. I used all the android mail clients and nothing came close. Why are there even so many paid options when this one is GPL and does literally everything I always wondered.

    • @ff34jmr
      @ff34jmr ปีที่แล้ว

      Fairmail is just awful. Probably one of the worst clients around in terms of functionality

    • @BaardFigur
      @BaardFigur 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ff34jmrin terms of functionality it's basically the best. It does everything, and it does it good.
      Unlike the delayed notifications on k9, they're instant. And it's opensource. Nearly perfect, technically speaking.
      When that'd said, if you're referring to the UI I can agree. It's cluttered and it's bad enough that I use K9 myself.

    Thunderbird on the desktop (with Outlook account) and Outlook on Android with Outlook account too. Because I used Outlook on Windows when I switched to Linux in 2017.

    It’ll be nice to have tbird on mobile, but it doesn’t bode well for Firefox mobile does it? Lol. Mozilla, a company known for its web browser, is making a good mobile email client app while their mobile browser app is a burning garbage heap. Kinda wish they would put some effort into that. But hey. Gotta take the wins where you can get them, right? It’ll be nice to finally have a good email app on mobile. Hopefully iOS can get the same love. 🤞
