When I was a kid, a huge rift developed in my family. I had an aunt who was a bigot among other things, but almost like clockwork she'd show up Sunday mornings to goto church with my Grandmother.
My Grandmother was a kind, christian lady who would out of her way to help people. In one case even stopping along the side of an interstate highway to help a group of black men who'd had a flat but didn't have a jack in their car. I'm sure she helped many others also, but I use this story to illustrate the type of woman she was. This tiny, little old, southern, white woman stopping to help four very large black men. At least they were large to me because I was five or six years old at the time.
That being said; One Sunday morning my aunt shows up in her Sunday best and my Grandmother calls her out. She said she would not be going to her church with a "Sunday morning christian". All hell broke loose. Screaming and yelling that finally ended with my Granddad throwing my aunt out the house and telling her not to come back till she changed her attitude. My aunt was livid. My Grandmother, having already missed the morning service simply began cooking lunch. Fried chicken and biscuits, I believe and god how I miss her cooking.
She explained to me that she had eight other kids who weren't nearly the pain in her butt as my aunt was. She made sure that I knew that she loved her daughter dearly but she hated her actions and attitudes. My Grandad, having survived as a regular Army rifleman in WW2, was less forgiving. "That pain the ass won't show up at my doorway again without getting her damn teeth knocked out".He was VERY protective of my Grandmother.
In the end, this short narrative, is simply to prove a point. Christians can some of the best people in world, It's the ones that my Grandad would've knocked the teeth out of, that are a pain in the ass. Like in every religion. Far too many people use it a cash cow and bludgeon against others. But there are many many Christians, Muslims, Hindus and others that I'm not familiar with, that are just decent folks. Fox news would've been an embarrassment to both my Grandmother and Granddad.

My favorite part was the "militant gays" line. That's as ridiculous as the phrase "gay agenda."

    • @kekizeki2481
      @kekizeki2481 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Richard Pseudonymous There is a gay agenda. It's like feminist agenda. There is a Christian agenda, and many other agenda's.
      Everyone have their own agenda!
What gays want is privilege for their beliefs and views to be held
      higher than religious beliefs.
No one is saying you should be able to deny service to gay people but to
reject certain customized messages written on cakes, T-shirts, other
      stuff that support pro-gay agenda.
The same right that allows you to deny KKK cake should allow you to deny
      gay wedding cake.
He makes comparisons as if making gay cake for conservative Christians
is same as slow-dancing with Hitler is to jews -well, what if it is the
      same for them!
Aren't they allowed to feel about homosexuality any way they want or
      actually feel?
No one is making Jews slow dance with Hitler but nazi sympathizer can
walk in to Jewish bakery and demand swastika as a sign on his cake. It's
his right to have that, no law against it.
What's the reasoning for the bakery owner to deny this man a legal cake?
None, other than his sense of feelings hurt. But this man didn't hurt
his feelings, him eating that cake won't hurt him, why should he not
      make the cake then?
The reason is simple, it's custom requested, it's his right to refuse
any customer's request he is uncomfortable with when he is asked to make
      it.
Not just on religious grounds, but of any grounds - like, if you support
one NFL team but someone want's you to make a cake with logo of rival
team you should be able to say no!
It sounds silly, it is silly, but the owner should have this right.
      That's the whole point.
Is it good for business to deny gay cakes to people who are now going to
      be marrying in mass?
Probably not just after recession and you don't want to come of as
homophob anyway, but if someone wants to do it, his right. Plenty more
will be happy to offer that cake.
Yes, sadly, even the nazi will probably find someone to make a cake for
      him too.
That's how it is when you have freedom in the country.

No one is passing judgment on them by not wanting to conform with their ideas, no more than an atheist is if he is refusing to acknowledge Christmas or any other religious holiday. That just doesn't concern him and he has right to be excluded from it. He can deny to sell or to paint any religious figures or make religious messages on cakes or whatever it is his business.
In the same way religious people have the right to be excluded from carrying out anything that supports gay agenda or homosexuality in any way.
Probably not just after recession and you don't want to come of as
homophobe anyway, but if someone wants to do it, his right. Plenty more
will be happy to offer that cake.
Yes, sadly, even the nazi will probably find someone to make a cake for
      him too.
That's how it is when you have freedom in the country.

    • @BFMVFL
      @BFMVFL 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Keki Zeki the cake thing makes sense, but that's just one example. As someone who works in a restaurant I firmly believe in the right to deny service for just about anything, but simply being gay is not one. For example if you go to a bakery and ask for a gay wedding cake with two grooms, I can see that. Especially if the person in question is making a scene. On the other hand, if a reasonable, albeit flamboyant, openly gay person asked for a birthday cake with a race car or something "normal" and was denied due to their appearance/sexuality, i'd have to say that's not okay. Also yes, some gays want special privilege in the same way that some "feminists" want privilege, just disguised as equality, but there are real gripes out there. A lot of them actually

    • @kekizeki2481
      @kekizeki2481 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mike
Yeah well, the issue is not an obvious gay person asking for non-gay cake but they keep representing it as it were.
It's not about the cake, it's about the message :)
It shouldn't even be an issue: you can reject gay cakes but also expect some people to avoid your bakery, so it's very damaging in the long run if you do that.
Bigger issue is if gays can be fired for being gays, because that's really sensitive issue, on the one hand everyone have a right to work an not be discriminated against, but imagine gay employe whose boss says he must reject making gay cakes?
Of-course, things get awkward when the employer realises he hired a gay guy LOL

    • @BFMVFL
      @BFMVFL 9 ปีที่แล้ว

But that is exactly the issue. Just like you can't refuse service based on race alone, you shouldn't be able to do it with regards to sexuality. That is exactly the argument. In many ways asking a conservative wedding cake company to make a gay wedding cake is like asking mcdonalds to make a whopper. They just don't do it, that's their image. I still think that's messed up but you're right, that's the downside of democracy, people can choose, even if its the wrong decision. With regards to employment, it's not just about companies who's image directly opposes the gay lifestyle. Businesses can fire/refuse to hire sole based on sexuality even if sexuality isn't central to a company's image the way it is with our theoretical bakery. If the company is publicly opposed to the gay lifestyle, then gay people would naturally avoid employment there, however, even if they did they should have another reason for terminating their employment other then their sexuality (for example their refusal to comply to company policy i.e. refusing to refuse making a gay wedding cake)

I don't know what I am. I think that most of the disputes we have in this country are about competing rights. The question becomes whose right trumps a competing right.
In this case, and in my humble opinion, the right of the baker not to be forced to violate his religious beliefs trumps the right of the gay guy to get a cake. There are other bakers and there is internet. The gay guy has the option of going elsewhere. The baker does not have the option of changing his faith.
But that's in this case. To me it's a case by case analysis for the most part. Or should be anyway.

I don't think the baker did anything wrong. You don't want the customer? That's your choice as a business owner. And the rest of the country should not get up in arms about it either. It's silly, and does not concern them. Now, if this were an issue that were prevalent enough to where it was difficult to acquire something as simple as cake, that'd be another matter. What bothers me is the vilification of both sides. It doesn't help when they both do terrible things. They basically only prove each other right. I just go about my business treating everyone as equals, because I believe that's the way to screw over the fewest amount of people. And honestly, it's so much less stressful.

On one hand, he makes extremely valid points, on the other, I'm a little disappointed that he didn't make note of this law already existing in several other states and being federal law. No one talking about this, on either side, seems to bring up precedent, yet if you read the law, it essentially leaves its effects entirely up to the courts and precedent. It does not explicitly allow any group to discriminate against any other, but it does have a clause that is ill-defined that could be interpreted that way by the courts. It states that the government may only hinder a person's religious freedom due to a "compelling government interest". This could be seen as meaning that any law is a "compelling government interest", or that only certain laws are "compelling government interest", or that no laws meet that standard. If anti-discrimination laws in Indiana, which from the sounds of things don't exist on this subject anyways, are deemed by the state's courts to not be a "compelling government interest", and denial of service is deemed to be important to one's religion, then the courts could rule against LGBT people. Until such a ruling, the law IS ambiguous and does not necessarily discriminate against anyone, like Indiana officials have been saying. Refusing to clarify the language however, is a clear sign of either being arrogant and refusing to listen to other people's concerns, or actually hoping for the courts to rule on it against LGBT people.

The Ohio governor did something similar, said doctors don't have to treat gay people if it's against his or her religion. I asked him if I was an Atheist Doctor, would I be able to deny care based on my beliefs, too? 'Cause then I could refuse to treat Christians.

For Pete's sake. I am Christian myself, but if a gay or lesbian couple wants to get married, I honestly don't care. It's their choice, their freewill, not mine. Who am I to judge? Honestly, how hard is it for a True Christian to say "hmm. Well, these people are God's Children to, maybe we should treat them as human beings". Want to know why anti-gay protests are unbiblical? the Book of John Chapter 8. In this section, a woman is caught cheating on her husband (adultery, which was punishable by death) and the religious figures of the day were going to stone her to death. They tell this to Jesus (trying to trap him) and he begins writing in the sand. He then says "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." Because all of them were guilty of sin, none could throw a stone, because they were no better than her. When the woman notices that her persecutors have left, he goes on to say "Then neither do I condemn you - Go now and leave your life of sin."
To put it basically, those people have no right to protest against gay people because they to are sinners and they are no different. So, perhaps in a rephrase "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to protest against the sinners." Which nobody is.
Pretty simple people "Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin

Whatever. If business owners want to be babies about this then I say let them have this one. We'll get to a point in history where homophobia is just as abhorrent as antisemitism and people will simply begin boycotting these places; it'll solve itself out about a generation from now.

      ZanoZik
Implying that "heterophilia" and homophobia mutually exclude each-other. Seriously though, I never once said that I hated heterosexuals. You act like I'm morally required to have children just because I exist. Does that mean I'm a complete waste of a human being if I catch an STD?
Strawman argument aside, this particular issue is nothing more than a clash between Christian morality and secular morality. Christians are being infringed in the sense that they must provide a service that is against their religion and LGBT folk are being infringed by the fact that not providing a service to a specific group of people is a human rights violation.
Look, if you want to refuse service to someone based on their orientation then go right ahead; I'll just take my business elsewhere.

    • @ZanoZik
      @ZanoZik 8 ปีที่แล้ว

XephreWolf Seriously, start thinking before you write. _Does that mean I'm a complete waste of a human being if I catch an STD?_ *THIS*
You see what you did there? No? Let me break it down for you: Of course you do not become human waste if you catch STD (though that _could_ mean you acted socially irresponsible and selfish), you will have to be "tagged" and get a mandatory treatment. Get it? *You have no rights running around spreading that STD, advocating it, advertising it, claiming that it's your right by constitution*. Get it?
And last but not least - _not providing a service to a specific group of people is a human rights violation_ made me laugh so hard. How absolutely braindead are you? I cannot believe you just spitted that bullshit!

so, this really started over things like gay people wanting to buy things like wedding cakes and such, and were denied because their gay. now, unless this cake is requested to be covered in but nekid sexual acts of profanity against the lordy jesus christ, it's not the same as putting a swastika on a cake or celebrating the kkk. they just want a fucking wedding cake, oh no! I have to put 2 dudes next to each other on a cake! this destabilizes my entire religious basis! even if they wanted a rainbow on a cake it's not like it's God's mission statement to protect cakes from having to be colored in horizontal lines of seven different colors so he can properly screw with the true love he in some way had to have helped create.

While it's not right for businesses to be able to deny people service for being gay, I don't think churches should have to provide wedding services for gay marriage, as the act of wedding a gay couple goes against the church's beliefs. Do I think gay people should be allowed to marry? Yeah, sure, they can do whatever the hell they want. But a person shouldn't be forced to go directly against their belief that something is morally wrong. Forcing an orthodox priest to wed a gay couple is like forcing a hardcore vegan to serve meat, or a pacifist to fight in the military. All of them are directly involved in doing things against their morals.

    • @Ragamucky

That's true. That's why there is a difference between "I don't want to do that because it's against my religion" and "I don't want YOU to do that because it's against my religion." The former is understandable and acceptable in any situation I can think of. The latter is unfair and unacceptable in most cases. It's fine to say YOU don't want to perform a marriage. But it's not okay to say somebody else can't because of your religion. I also don't think baking a cal is against the Christian religion, either, or any, really.

Hahaha no one made these guys start a business. No one held a gun to their head and told them they have to make cakes 8 hours a day.
THEY decided to incorporate. THEY decided to set business hours. THAT'S how it works. I love how you equate "please take my money in exchange for your goods/services" as slavery. I also love how the right has equated gay people buying cakes with Nazi's forcing Jews into hard labor....because that analogy TOTALLY doesn't make you look bonkers.
No one is "taking life, liberties, or property". Don't confuse discrimination with liberty. You have the liberty to form a business, and in this case, to sell cakes. You can shut down your business and stop selling cakes. You can set a price for your cakes. You can NOT refuse service because of race, gender, creed, religion, or sexual orientation. In short, you can't refuse service because of how someone was born. You can't discriminate any more than you can shout fire in a crowded theatre.
Nice job at trying to equivocate discrimination with liberty. I am sure John Locke would be proud...and by proud I mean cunt punt you.

Also, if you own a business, the land it's on, the shit inside it (as you so eloquently put it), and you don't want to sell, then don't own a business in the first place! Nobody is forcing you to run a business. You are expected to treat everyone equally though for as long as they have not done anything illegal which resulted in hurting your business.
