Undercover investigation: Life coaches caught on camera (Marketplace)

  • CBC Marketplace producers went undercover to investigate the unregulated business of life coaching. We found some coaches are offering mental health advice they aren’t qualified to give, and using coercive sales tactics to pressure people into spending hundreds - sometimes thousands - of dollars on the spot. Read more: www.cbc.ca/1.6364745
We contacted all the life coaches in our story. We also reached out to Tony Robbins about our story. You can read their statements here: www.cbc.ca/1.6364878

Neither do 99.99% of those in ALL areas of behavioral health, whether they're a psychiatrist, psychologist, MFCC, social worker, LMFF, etc.
Those people (who work in the areas of behavioral health) are some of the most toxic, harmful and messed up people anywhere.
People generally go into the helping professions field to "solve" their own problems and help themselves, not so much others; they drink the Kool-Aide--deluding themselves and others--by claiming that they want to "help" people. In fact, behavioral healthcare is a sick and twisted, poorly regulated "profession", full of toxic predators. "Life coaches" are the flunkies who don't take their role seriously enough to even bother seeking "appropriate" professional training (which is still questionable at best).

I want my rates to align with what i would charge hourly (as a Social worker with a masters and license) (but in this case, weekly) which in many areas can be from 75-250 an hour (i got that from a “how much do coaches make” article but also asked other LiCSWs about what they charge and it ranged from 90-150 an hour. I chose 90 at first as i just started coaching a few months ago after 25 yrs with state child protection agency. But i am getting my ADHD-CCSP certification (just saying i have training to be a Certified Clinical Service Provider for people with ADHD. While i may go up 10 when i complete that certification, i do not agree with the “do it now or lose the good deal”. Last thing those needing mental health support need is more stress and pressure. I am more likely to do some groups on certain topics and say if you cant right now, i will be happy to let them know when i do another one.
I think the disconnect is that some have a degree, retire, and wish to work for themselves after years in a bureaucracy, but have zero business education. When we seek some classes on business understanding for coaching because that is a specific kind of solo business, many who teach marketing and branding also encourage asking for higher prices for packages. Because we therapeutically people tend to under appreciate our own work. But some can go overboard.

I think there's definitely a place for life coaching, like someone who just wants to build better habits, get themselves back on track a bit, etc. It NEEDS to come with real mental health training though, so people who need genuine therapy and help get screened out and directed to the correct places. People's lives are at risk and there absolutely needs to be regulation.

Followed by three years in graduate school, followed with a six month practicum, with an additional year of internship plus a thesis, I find this insulting. This is just to graduate! This doesn't include the 3,000 hours of clinical supervision and passing the national exam after around a decade and a half of university level clinical training and supervision. The 36 hours of additional training per two years also is monitored.

If someone is dealing with mental health issues, what they need is a therapist they click with, and to continue searching until they find one that is educated and knowledgeable. If a "Life Coach" can't support what is best for them, they, the coaches, certainly don't deserve to be anywhere near vulnerable people. One doesn't heal by skipping steps. Life Coaches need ethics and morals. Selling happiness for such outrageous sums screams the real reason you do what you do.

Thanks for doing this investigation on life coach. My daughter has been doing life coaching and people are paying her thousands for her special seminars in mansions in the Orlando area. These seminars look like high priced pampering oh yeah along with her coaching services. She has now blocked me from her and my grandchildren. And only wants positive people in her life. I am worried about her.

The problem with the profession of "life coach" is not clearly defined. They are also not licensed or governed by a regulatory body. I know of two life coaches who only have BA degrees.

  • @Gameboob
    @Gameboob 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Just don't go to a life coach if you have depression or mental illness 🤦‍♂️🙄 life coaches and psychologists are practically the same price. That said, Canada should cover 5-10 visits to a licensed psychologist/psychiatrist per year. I think that would help a lot of people struggling with issues who can't afford the $200/hr rate.
Life coaches should be a thing focused on positive psychology, something that is hard to find in a therapist.

To be fair, I've been traumatized by registered medical social workers, therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists and mental health professionals just as much as life coaches and spiritual advisors. 😂 Just want to be honest with you. I have intersecting marginalized identities and I understand now that's why they all hurt me so much, I wasn't receiving patient centered or trauma informed care at all. It was all the stuff for privileged people which is like the worst treatment you can give to someone who ticks multiple marginalized boxes. I had so many conflicting messages and no representation. Therapy can be just as damaging as life coaches. It just depends on who is involved. It's good to know who you are before you seek care but mostly it's important to find someone who let's you be you.
The issue with mental health professionals is they can make life so much worse if you are considering self harm. Often their approach is unhelpful and traumatizing in my experience. Where as a life coach, if you get one that mostly just listens, validates you and reminds you what in life is worth living for, will not take that approach. They'll practice non judgmental witnessing. Many people need that. I need that. I need to express myself without worrying the cops will show up at my door since they're more likely to shoot me than help me. There is no one size fits all.
In Canada we don't have the luxury of switching from mental health professional to mental health professional because of our ineffective system. But if you have some cash, you can with life coaches. But neither of those options works if they won't let you be who you are. They have to give you the space to figure out what is best for you. Ultimately you are the one who has to live with your choices, only you can truly know what is best for you. And if you don't know now, with good support, you will know later. ♥ Lead with love ♥

I'm in Canada and have switched mental health professionals several times. Finding someone you are comfortable with is extremely important for success, Anyone struggling with mental health issues can get a list of treatment centers from their doctor. Many workplaces also offer a program that provides several free counselling sessions.

Question is why are people falling for this? In a free market they have a choice and yet they go to something inferior, why? Why don't they chose to go to someone licensed? Somewhere the therapist community must ask this question and perhaps step up their marketing. There's also the cost aspect, the insurance and availability which all detracts from the final experience no matter how genuine.

I had a bad experience with "unregulated" life coaches. I ended up going for therapy afterwards just to heal from the abuse I endured from them. I am all for government regulation of life coaches. Many of them try to pull you into their other businesses such as MLM's. Don't fall for them. They're doing it to boost their egos, take away your power and make money.

Are there legitimate life coaching programs that teach a code of conduct, scope of practice, and cater to individuals who are truly interested in helping people. I definitely believe there is a gap between counseling and coaching. However, I’d expect a life coach to have a successful life themselves. When your life coach appears to need a life coach ( the woman whose office is a table at the local cafe ), you might want to get a different life coach.

There are indeed. And there is a regulated body to go through to become an accredited life coach. Either the ICF or the AC. Getting a credential takes years and a hundred plus hours of supervised training. As well as yearly continuing education. During my certification schooling we were given a lot of training on the boundaries between therapy and coaching.
Unfortunately many of these people who title themselves coches are making it difficult for legitimate coaches to market themselves.

I would definitely not go to a life coach if you are feeling depressed, grieving, constantly anxious, have had a traumatic experience or any other mental health related problems. Please go to a trained mental health therapist or see your doctor. Coaching can be great but they are not trained in mental health. I have had both a coach and psychologist for depression and trauma and a mental health professional is who to go to. Once you have worked through what you need to work through with your therapist(which can take time), then try coaching if you like.Fantastic investigation.

If the life coach costs more than a good therapist, nix the life coach because you can find a therapist that does all the same things but better. Organizing your life? Healthy positivity? Troubleshooting your habits? Working on transforming your social life? Daily routines? A therapist already does all of that with more experience!!! So long as you find the right fit.

I've often thought of going to a life coach, I have career issues that I feel like would not be in the wheelhouse of a psychologist or therapist and self-esteem issues, but I've heard so many terrible stories of bad life coaches. I think the worst being one that ended coached person that was a fellow high school student and shortly after started dating them... and within months had married them only to divorce within weeks... and during couples counseling refused to participate in the meetings.

People have trauma because of the suffering they have done. But with every hardship, there's a lesson and every lesson must be applied because you can use the lesson you learn when that challenge comes again with you. Your thinking is applied to your behaviour you must learn how to adjust yourself.

the fact that people are on the look for a life coach is a sign they should not go to a 'life coach' but a psychologist. Because no one in their right mind would go to someone not from any recognized institutions for help with their life.
But, we now live in a serious problematic time where people are left without ressources of any kind, in a recession that is gonna and is hitting hard, where there is a waiting list of a year before seeing a psychologist and that is IF your problem is very serious and life threatening. The real problem is the lack of ressources to support the people because the government has lose control on this capitalist jungle where the people are becoming more and more just a number. So people try to find help in desperate ways...not in the right and secured way.

I'm finding so many inept, narcissistic life coaches, spewing out their bad, unasked-for advice in every social situation. That said, if you've worked in the psychology/psychiatry and/or medical fields you will know that a substantial number of those licensed people are incompetent and should not be in practice. Life Coaches are worse, but the maybe only 40% of doctors and therapists are truly competent.

You can understand totally why this business thrives. Will power isn't able to be bought. Simply find weak/soft hysterical, drama queen types & promise them their wildest dreams. Here in Australia, it's the weight-loss crowds, followed by the "New Year's Resolution" losers (who want to stop smoking). Easy MONEY!!! 💵💰💸

He was not trauma informed. On one hand he was right when he said he couldn't treat anxiety, but he was wrong by treating it anyway. I think its important for the coach to share what additional training they have with their certification and limitation. Unless they have a psychology degree or a counselling credential they should not treat any form of illness. Just stick to goal setting and find out the block. If the block is traumatic, work with the therapist.

Well if you say you will go to A, B, or C but you are afraid of change or not willing to commit change you will never get away from depression but if you accept risk and that risk or hardship give you a solution to achieve peace of mind you must deal with it. You get depressed because you keep thinking the same thing and have no change. You should change the way you think and try something else to see the solution. STOP FORCING THAT DOESN'T WORK BECAUSE IT IS NOT SUIT FOR YOU.

In speaking of self harm the qualified expert in the field says the coach should have jumped on that subject right away. I would have thought it would have been better to ease into it. If you ask for too much too soon isn't it more likely they will clam up and get defensive, possibly evading the subject later? Isn't it better to let that experience talk about it in their own time and pace during the conversation? And if they don't expand upon it during the session it can be queried at the end with the appropriate recommendations for people highly qualified with suicide to best address the client's needs. Once something is vital we must exercise the greatest care in approaching it. She probably knows this but was worried that an inexperienced life coach is likely to skip over a risky topic like this.

Whatever your heart tells you to want to be you must go for it. It is your freedom to achieve happiness for yourself. Don't be mean for what your heart tells you or else you will suffer. If you are scared of what other people tell you that is out of your control. But if you focus on what makes you happy and let them be because you know that you have your own choice and freedom to achieve happiness for yourself. If you are focusing on what makes you happy the state of your thinking will drive you into positive behaviour and you will have more confidence in yourself.
