  • The new replacement tire carrier hoist arrived, and I install it in a 2004 Toyota 4Runner
The original tire carrier hoist was a cable system that spooled into itself while the new one has a chain that hangs. Let me know if you know what to do with this chain!

thank you for the video - it inspired me! i could not get my rusted bolts out with a wrench though - but with persistence, a dremel, a drill and an angle grinder i got the old one removed 😂. i’ve been driving around the past three years with the spare on a roof rack but the rattling was driving me insane- finally manned-up and tackled the problem! unbelievable 6 difficult to access / prone to rust bolts holding that thing on . thank you for showing it is possible !

Great! I put this off for almost a year and finally had the courage to take it on

Thanks for the positive feedback! I am glad it helped. The bolts holding the part on take some patience

I just finished replacing my spare carrier. The four bolts that hold the carrier itself on were easy to insert and tighten. I didn't attempt to install the two outside bolts that hold the bracket guide on in the way Toyota intended. Instead, I drilled out the two outside threaded holes on the spare carrier. I then attached the bracket guide with bolts and nuts (and lock washers). I was able to tighten the two nuts from below without difficulty. The bracket guide was really rusty. I used a wire brush on a bench grinder and a hand grinder to remove some rust. I soaked the part in Evapo Rust, which worked well. I then hit the part again with the wire brush and sprayed with rubberized undercoating. As for the length of chain dangling down after replacing the spare, I used some thin wire to hang it. I think a zip tie would also work. I got the idea for drilling out the outside holes and using nuts from a post in toyota-4runner.org forum. I highly recommend that approach as it seems like a big time saver.

Just realized I had the same problem. I had a flat a few years back. Lowered spare and put it back afterwards. Didn’t notice chain or maybe I lucked out and it coiled up neatly and didn’t hang down.
Had reason to take it down again recently and heard rattling after raising it back up.
I took the lower half of plastic gallon milk container. Cut hole about 1” diameter in bottom center. Used blade to slice from circle to top. With tire lowered I inserted plastic container around chain between tire and undercarriage. Used 2 zip ties and a hole punch to allow me to close up the cut I made. It now creates a bucket of sorts to catch the chain. As tire raises up excess chain falls into milk container. I cut a few drain holes in container so it won’t hold water.

Anybody know if there are aftermarket or third party mounts that are easier to install ?

Used on eBay was the only way I could find a Cable system but they all have the same mounting bracket with the screws on top. The only other options are expensive to relocate the carrier on the back door or roof rack
