  • Today we go over how to install a Hopkins Wiring Kit on our 3rd Gen Toyota 4Runner, model years 1996-2002, so we can use it to tow a small trailer. Please note, this installation does not include installing a brake controller, only a 4-Flat wiring harness, a Hopkins #43415 to be exact.

    On the passenger side, a little piece of me died when I seen the panel keeper pull out. Thank you for this video man. Much appreciated.

    I just followed the video exactly, and successfully wired in this exact harness on my 2002 4 runner. The hitch will be here tomorrow so I'll follow that video too. Thank you so much that made it so easy! Just unplug, plug, the ground, and it's ready to go. I thought I was gonna have to splice and all that headache. But no, and I thank you sir! Have a great day I appreciate you so much

    Matt - You Rock N' Roll brother! My wife and I purchased her friends 2002 4Runner this year minus the hitch. Your video is a blessing by taking out all the guess work so much appreciated.

    excellent description of this process...could add a schematic of which color goes to each light, & the power that wire carries
    so it could be differeniated, but perhaps thats unnecessary..thanks

    nicely done. I am installing a rear cam so I'll do this at the same time.

    • @MattKester
      @MattKester  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on! Might as well, while you're in there. I put a camera on mine, and it's been one of the most useful mods I've done. Unfortunately, the Sony XAV head unit I'm using won't automatically switch from whatever it was doing to the camera when I put it in reverse. I actually have to select the camera on the menu, do my backing up, then switch it back. Oh well, still beats not having a camera and running something or someone over! Hope you all goes together easy for you!

      @@MattKester I'll find out soon, if mine switches automatically or not... agree with you completely tho.

    Very helpful, I'm troubleshooting a factory 4-way with only right brake lights work.

      Oh no! I feel you, there are few things I dislike more than chasing down automotive electrical issues! I hope you get it figured out without too much trouble!

    • @lorenjohnbailey6445
      @lorenjohnbailey6445 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm doing the same. Looks like the factory one has gone bad, and not uncommon. I'm putting the linked part in the video because a new factory replacement was upward of $200! Wish I knew if I could reverse this installation (yellow on passenger, green on driver) since they already did the wiring and I can just replace theirs. Might hook it up temporarily and see if it reverses when I use the signals. Great video!

    • @lorenjohnbailey6445
      @lorenjohnbailey6445 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spoiler alert...you can't flip them and route it the same as the factory controller. The yellow/green sides DO matter driver vs passenger side. I suppose you could if you dismantled the 4 pin connector where it meets the controller harness. But, that seemed extreme so I just ripped out everything factory and put it in like 2nd Hand did here. Don, I hope you got it worked out. Apparently the factory controllers go out fairly often from what I've read in other 4runner forums. If your on vehicle lights are working, probably no need to chase wires any further than the controller.

    Doing this today, but existing factory parts exist. It looks like it's basically the same. Question though, at 4:31, you said you were running the 4 pin harness under the driver's side. It looks like it comes out at the passenger side to pop through the grommet. Is that correct or did you mean to say passenger side? Wondering how difficult it will be to run from driver's side to passenger side when I can't see up there. The factory controller box is actually mounted inside the driver's side, and that 4 pin harness goes through the driver's side grommet (just a side note).

    • @lorenjohnbailey6445
      @lorenjohnbailey6445 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disregard this. There is an opening on both driver and passenger sides. The factory used the driver side. We have to use the passenger side for the 43415. Thanks again for the video.

    Great video. Does this completely bypass the factory black convertor box on the driver's side? Mines gone bad and I only have one side of trailer lights.

    I am so far behind understanding this video. I really don't get it. I don't want to move the wiring harness to the other side, I want to replace it so I can tow my dam trailer. Can this part kit be used to replace the old wiring harness?

    Would this Hopkins #43415 Wiring Kit work on my 1992 4Runner, or would I need another kit?

  • @jambam6176

    I have a 2002... I replaced the rusted out 3 piece chrome rear bumper a couple weeks ago. *On both sides of the vehicle* - under the bumper sides is a wire harness. At the time I wondered what they are for. Could these harnesses be for the rear trailer hitch.
    *EDIT:* Actually, the wire harness is only on the left (Drivers) side. You can see it without removing the side bumper. Anyone know what this harness is for?

      No, this only works on 96-02 third Gen models.
