  • Whilst building the new garage I had an accident. Did something really stupid and went up a ladder with no one else around.
Had quite a bad fall and almost killed myself!
In this video I show you exactly what happened and also show you inside the new garage along with the new solar combiner boxes.
Below is a link to the scaffolding tower I mentioned in the video

One of the upsides of hitting dirt instead of concrete is it makes a big difference if you smack your head. I usually work alone also and the fear of getting hurt with no one around is real. I'm glad to hear you were able to get back up on your feet! Hopefully the lingering issues heal up completely soon.

Sorry you hurt your back! Glad it wasn’t too serious. I like the renovation type videos. I would enjoy seeing more in between the solar/wiring ones.

Sarah, I am glad that you are back on your channel, and survived the fall. I would be interested to see the renovation of the barn roof, in preparation for the solar installation. I hope that you get well soon. Thanks. From Errol.

Sarah, glad you didn’t kill yourself. I came off a ladder years ago when one of the feet sunk in soft ground. Twelve years later I’m still feeling the damage to my ankles. I recommend you go see a doctor if you haven’t already.
Yes, if you have time, I’d love to see every aspect of your construction as you renovate your barn, structural, concrete floors, roofs, interiors, electrical, plumbing, solar… everything. Keep up the good work.

You are most fortunate to have escaped serious injury or worse! The aluminium easy up scaffolding platform as a safer means to work at height is the way to go. Look after yourself and take care when working at height. Complacency is the enemy of safety.

I am glad you survived your fall. Scary business that. I would be happy to see whatever you get up to so I am happy to see your renovations. The structures and systems are so much different from what I am used to in Canada that it is all interesting.

Hi Sara, I was thinking a longtime ago already working alone on electricity and doing stuff like you do has some risks! I always inform my wife when I start working on such things…
For me, I`m always interesting in seeing a work in progress!
    Succes with your project!

Glad you are ok. The infrastructure for the solar is all part of it. I would watch the renovations.

I'd like to watch building stuff as well. I like all kinds of DIY things. Maybe you want to create a second channel that hosts the building stuff while this one sticks to the PV/Electricity tasks.

Sorry to hear about you're accident, you were very lucky. If you have no one to stand at the base of the ladder, tie it off to something, use a ground spike and ratchet strap, be wary of where the spike is as you wouldn't want to fall on it. I have a couple of bits of timber screwed together like an L shape then knock two spikes in level with the timber, and stand the ladder on it. Would love to see the renovations, if something ends up a bit long, you could always do a time lapse.

Would be good to see the reinforcement process for the roof including swapping roofing sheets over. Very relevant to a solar channel imo

There are quite a few prospective viewers, me included, who are really interested in the interface between professionally contracted work and DIY work. Renovations and electrification (solar, EVs, heat pumps, etc) are all very costly these days and I think a lot of people (me included) are really interested in trying to do as much DIY as we can, but are not entirely sure where the demarcation is between DIY and contracted work.
So I don't think it is necessarily bad to have segments showing some of the other work. You'll have to decide on what level of detail is appropriate, and probably edit a lot more than usual, but I think there is a lot of potential value.
Channels are incredibly difficult to get going. It takes years, really. And it is an insane amount of work, particularly the editing. But a channel can also be a personal record of sorts, and not necessarily need a lot of followers per-say. I think it is one of those personal decisions that outside advice can't really help with or cover well. A big "Good Luck" is all I can offer there..

For that ladder and wall... four anchor points across the top of the wall (assuming the wood beam isn't rotted) would be beneficial. You can use them to secure a safety line or even run a rope across the top that is looped through the top of the ladder to stop it from crashing completely down to earth if it slips.
For the somewhat shorter ladder I use when I go up onto my roof, I use a counter-weight. Basically a big slab of wood (about 100 lbs) that I rest across the second rung from the bottom, and then I pile a bunch of weight on the slab to prevent the bottom of the ladder from going anywhere.
Just some quick thoughts on my part.

I got no interest in seeing an electric tractor but I would love to see more videos of installing combinerboxes, panels, cabling, inverter, batteries etc. etc. Just my 2c feedback. Hope your back gets better ^^

Remember, electric ring circuits only exist in the UK. Fuse 32 amps.
In Europe and the world, power cables are laid in branches. (radial circuit ) Fuse 16 amps.
Ring circuits needed 2x 2.5 mm² cable, radial circuit needed only 1x 2.5 mm² cable

Your very lucky co-worker he was standing on much shorter ladder hanging Christmas lights on a 10 foot roof eve he lost his balance fell broke his back vertebra. The only good luck he had was didn't damage his spinal cord, but he did puncture the spinal area caused the fluid to leak out. He was in a body cast for several weeks if anyone knows how itchy a arm cast can be can you imagine being in a full body cast. I took a ladder class as part of safety training for my employment some good safety tips such as all extension ladders have to be tied off so they can't fall down. You can find these tips online or watch some videos they might seem overly cautious it only takes one fall off a ladder end up paralyzed rest of your life, or worse.

Yes please show others works, to make something off grid isnt just put the wire, there is lot of work and infrastructure before put first wire. Also good idea is automatic door project.
    Thank you.
