Struggling with the first 7 solar panels

  • Today we installed the first sections of solar rails and then installed the first seven solar panels. We found it really fiddly getting the racking to fit together. But eventually we got the hang of it.

Everything looks great. You will have it done in no time. I am glad you found a way to clip on the safety harness.

When DIY installing panels on my garage, I put two bolts and nuts in each panel for the lower row of panels (in holes already provided in the panel frame). I could temporarily rest the panels against the rails without them sliding down on their own. That made final positioning and securing the panels to the rails with the L brackets a whole lot easier. I didn't even bother to remove the bolts since they will be useful at some point in the future when I take the panels off.
Be extremely careful on the final MC4 connections. Remember that the string plus/minus is going to be in the hundreds of volts.
Reminder to check the roof loads again. That's a lot of weight. Also check for water leaks.
    Good luck!

Everything looks beautifully done. My only worry is they might be a little too close together for the expansion and contraction with heat..

The specifications say a minimum of 5 mm none of our panels are closer than 5 millimeters.

Don't forget your earthing cable for the panels! Nice to see you've ALWAYS have your harness attached! 😮

Watch that harness lead Sarra, because it was crossing your assistant which would mean if you did fall you would take him with you. Doing a great job though, but make sure you test every panel just before you hook up. How are you leaving the cables under the panels, because they should be tied up to the rails securely, any movement with loose wires up there with wind, and it touch that metal roof, will not end well, if the insulation rubs through to create a short. FIZ Bang!!

I’m very proud of you. You’ve taken it upon yourself to bust away from the grid. What you’re doing is going to work. I have grown my own personal solar system from a small solar array to a total of 11,000 W and it’s very rewarding to know that you will have a stable sustainable source of electricity for the rest of your life. I really want to see you do the entire steel roof and solar panels. You can never have too much. Gravity is a bitch. You’ll only have to do this once though. I’m glad you have decided to use the Victron gear. It’s good stuff. You are an inspiration to people who you don’t even know yet. Keep up the good work and don’t trip or fall.

Looking good Sarah really good i know the mc4s are insulated biut be careful thats a lot of power and that belt is going to hurt . thanks for the video looking forward to seeing all the panels up

Thanks for the tips! Today when we were connecting the panel together we made sure we put a blanket over the panels so not to get any sparks when connecting, thanks for the tip.

Keep the connectors away from the metal roof, with heavy and long rainfall they could become wet and make a ground fault!

Dont think I'm conviced on proprietary mounting hw over good old 40mm unistrut and L brackets. 10yrs from now you will still find L brackets and unistrut

Nice video.👍 But, you should first align the rails to each other in height with a string before mounting the panels.😅

I don’t understand why you didn’t use clamps on to the seams instead of puncturing the metal roof ?

Are you certain that you are utilizing the appropriate system for your roof type? I don't think your 20 cm scuws are necessary for this type of roof.

Personaly I would have taken all the panel cables through the roof and done all the connections inside the roof. If you have a panel go faulty how to you test for it when the penels are in series?

Nice job. Are you putting solar panels on both sides of the roof?

    • @Gridbusters-qx4om
      @Gridbusters-qx4om  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

No we're only pushing them on one side the side that is south facing that gets the sun most of the day.
