Today we will be discussing which sonic adventure game is better. This is strictly my opinion, I do not think that one game is significantly better than the other. They are both good games
As a kid I would have said SA1 hands down no competition. I loved the hub worlds and just being able to play around as every character. However now I’d say SA2 because I like the music more and find the levels more structured and replayable. Also the chao garden in SA2 is amazing.
Me personally I enjoy Sonic Adventure 1 more, the hub world's felt more adventurous than SA2 and the game itself is just so fun. And the stopping sound effect Sonic has when braking is so great
The reason Shadow dies isn't because it's what Maria wanted. It's because he pushed himself and ran out of rings. His fight is the last one before him and sonic both power up to warp the Ark away. He ran out simple as that and fell to Earth.
I also think that it’s because that was his first time using the form, so his body wasn’t conditioned, unlike sonic, who used it plenty of times before.
Sonic Adventure felt like....an adventure game lol. The way the hub world is designed, adding lots of exploration and interactivuty, it feels more like an adventure. Sonic Adventure 2 is just playing through levels, albeit some levels were really fun and structured, and the chao garden in SA2 was insane. SA1 clears for me, but as someone who puts literal hundreds of hours in just the chao garden, SA2 is on another level.
My pick: Adventure. While there are positives and negatives in both games, here’s how I came to my decision: - Story: Adventure - Visuals: Adventure 2 - Soundtrack: Adventure 2 - Mechanics: Adventure - Sales (tiebreaker): Adventure
For me it’s Adventure, the songs are better in my opinion, All the themes of each character have NO autotune, and are made from pure talent and sound good. ( maybe not for amy and big) Also SA2 music is good but do sound a bit off ( Especially tails) for tails theme the instrumental sounds good, but when words are put it matches the instrumental which sounds odd. Also SA1 wins in visuals, the opening cutscene in SA1 was a better quality than the opening for SA2, but SA2 also has animation like SA1 but a lower quality, not as advanced as Adventures higher quality animation
I enjoy both, but SA1 reminds me more of the early Sonic games, just good, wholesome fun, with a couple of sad moments in there, such as Tikal flashback and such. SA2 is very good but I think that was the start of the franchise taking itself too seriously and that gave us games like Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic 06
I like how the Biolizard makes minor background appearances in newspapers and in the computer before he actually reveals himself. It’s kind of like how Staypuft from Ghostbusters or the velociraptors from Jurassic Park keep making small cameos throughout both films.
If you’re asking which game is better, you really gotta look at the DC originals. Especially with the opening cutscenes - considering the fact that SA2 on DC didn’t have one, so SA1 wins by default. Also, the DX version of SA1 is bugged to crap, and the Dreamcast original really doesn’t have most of those bugs.
SA2 is by far the most popular game in the speedrunning community not just between the two but out of all Sonic games. Make of that what you will but I personally prefer SA2 for a number of reasons. My biggest issue with SA2 is definitely the botched treasure hunting radar though. I don't really mind the mech stages tbh, but I feel it would've been better if they skipped on the idea of pairing the characters and only had robotnik in a mech.
I like the general feel and atmosphere of the first, and feel like it has a bit more polish to the gameplay. 2 has a lot more content and more focused gameplay. I think I prefer SA1, none of the characters overstay their welcome while in 2 it does feel like it drags its feet near the end with hamming in more sections for each character. Btw, if you're playing the HD port of SA2, may I recommend looking into a deadzone fix for your stick, the built in controls are a bit busted on the HD port so it makes movement ESPECIALLY the walkers feel very awkward, and far more awkward than they should.
sa1 cuz 1 your not forced to play stages you dont want to 2 you have the hub worlds that let you breath after beating a stage and helps make the world feel more alive 3 knuckles stages dont lock the radar 4 gamma shooting stages are just a little more fun and fast pace then tails/eggmans 5 it built off the story of sonic 3k wonderfully 6 eggman in sa1 was dominating the gang for 1/2 the game {he was using all 300 iq points to get them emeralds 7 THE EGG CARRIER 8 sonic controls were peak in sa1 9 it gave every character lots of development that future games can build of 10 the levels were really well designed {sa2 levels were also great but way more jankey due to sonic controls being worse IMO} 11 i dont care what anyone says but sonic knuckles eggman voice actors killed it 12 all the chaos boss fights are unique and creative 13 beta mk2 fight was goated 14 perfect chaos was soo awsome 15 overall it was just easier and controlled better and i loved how much love each character got but sa2 is still top 5 dont get me wrong that game is really great

There is so much to unpack. Both have their ups and downs. Sonic feels so much better to control in SA1 and I love the physics. Speedrunning that game is so fun. There is so much charm that is lost for the darker tone of SA2 (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). The hub worlds and the goofy cutscenes make me smile. I have to knock it though for the other characters not being as fun to play as SA2 and the stages not being as polished as SA2. SA2 also has the better story and OST too. Overall SA1 is probably the weaker game, but idc I’ll play the Sonic stages a million times.

With the Definitive PC versions under my belt, we're talking QoL fixes and DC restored content and all, I'd still prefer SA1, SA2 is now a close second though the modding community diidn't have to go as far as overhaul every cutscene to make the game overall better (as well as radar fix, better tail/eggman mech controls). The difference is that SA2 is still kind of pain to 100%, SA1 I enjoy every stage and the 3 emblems that come with it, SA2 can take those Cart stages and shove it. SA2 has a far better chao garden (somehow better with Chao World), and online 2-player. I think it all comes down to preference and I can see if SA2 is someone's winner but in my book it'll always be close now.

On the other hand, SA2 was fun for me to play through, and unlike SA1 It didn’t take me a year and a half to beat it. SA1 is so cool in concept but really fails to hold up today.
Sonic Adventure 2 was the first Sonic game I've played on gamecube, at first I needed some time and a little practice to master it and I did, a few years later I started to become a pro at it. When I played Sonic Generations and won, I saw the end credits of every Sonic game in history, one of them I've noticed was Sonic Adventure, I wanted to see what made it tick, and that thing was the Main theme Open your heart by Crush 40. That song made love this game and heavy metal music, and also Chaos being one of my favorite characters in the franchise, I guess Sega want to give Sonic a challenge, like Sonic hates water and his fighting an enemy made of water, how ironic. Anyway, both games are equally great.
If you would have kept the same adventure style from sa1 to sa2. Sa2 would have been the ultimate game. Sonic frontiers got it right with the map layout but I hate the style. They should have kept it where all the characters interplayed together with their story lines
The thing about sa2 is that Something’s that Sa2 did Sa1 did better like the run cycles So in sa1 his walk wasn’t bad or good but in sa2 It’s worse with him Flaying his arms and legs as he slides kinda his job in sa1 his jog was decent (but just like sa2 walk cycle his Sa2 jog is just him flalying his arms and legs around ) And in sa1 His run was good in sa2 Its just the jog getting faster and in sa1 his Top speed animation (when he hits a boost) and it looks great his run is smooth like he’s Coasting And in sa2 his top speed is just A mess.. (Also in sa1 his shoes have this blur and stretch effect and it looks great But they removed it from Sa1 game cube pc And sa2)
the thing that kills SA2 for me is honestly the nerfed radar in the treasure hunting levels, Why did they nerf it. Ultamitely the treasure hunting is better is Sa1 and i also am not a huge fan of the mech shooting, so basicly in SA2 i only like 1 out of the 3 different mission types. SA1 only levels i dislike are Big and Amy, everything else is fine. I enjoy more of what SA1 has to offer.
SA1 anyday SA2 is great .. for 50% of the game the issue is Eggman and Tails levels bit being as fun as SA1 shooting levels and Rouge and Knuckles levels not having the ideal 3 Crystal tracker instead of just the One Crystal at a time
SA1 is one good campaing and 5 half assed ones. SA2 is all killer no filler. SA1 is better for people who only liked the Sonic playstyle, Sonic gameplay is at its best there and more prevalent, but as a game in general, SA2 is superior.

Sonic Adventure 2 doesn’t have an opening cutscene. You’re using rerelease ports. These are not the original games. Sonic Adventure 1 has the better opening cutscene by virtue of its existence. I don’t think it’s fair to use later rereleases. Sonic Adventure ≠ Sonic Adventure DX. Sonic Adventure 2 ≠ Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. The GameCube and Steam releases are not the same as the Dreamcast versions. They’re similar, but not the same.
SA 1 for me. I love sonic free movement. When I got SA 2 on release date that was my biggest complaint. Sonic was so stiff and he couldn't do quick turns as easily not could I abuse the spin dash to get anywhere I was on maps. SA 2 took that away and make completely linear maps for each character. And maybe it was just me but I love ice cap. You have to grab on to spikes and turn and jump off them like a sonic platformer, land and run up the side then abuse the spin dash to get to top faster and the switch. Dont get me wrong I love SA 2 as well it was fun running thru stages as fast as possible but I always found myself going back to SA 1 just to replay ice cap and speed highway. (my absolute favorite stage)
Heres my 2 cents The intro cutscene shouldnt matter too much in my opinion since both are skipable SA1's level design (aside from Knuckles) is shit. SA2 has way better gameplay on the Speed and Mech stages

SA did a pretty good job on making it simple, yet giving good details and make it like an "adventure" to travel around. Playing as 2 Knuckles: You already said at 5:04 why SA Knuckles is better than SA2 Playing as 2 tails? You don't even play as "Tails", you play as a skin swapped Gamma with worse controls.

Overall I like SA2’s story more too, I think it’s the best sonic game story, however SA1 had a few good story moments as well.

Kinda hard to pick which one i like more sometimes. It depends on my mood. I have them both 100% achievements on xbox mainly cause i love both games.

the moves are so bad in sa2 because most of the abilities is map to 1 button, its a struggle to use the light speed dash some times.

Even Amy can be fun in SA1 too. The only big letdown is Big's gameplay in SA1 which is basically the only really bad thing from that game. And yeah, SA2 Chao Garden is better than SA1's.
SA1 because I can just play the good levels and ignore the trash other characters. I also like the music more.

Sonic Adventure 2 doesn’t have an opening cutscene. You’re using rerelease ports. These are not the original games. Sonic Adventure 1 has the better opening cutscene by virtue of its existence. I don’t think it’s fair to use later rereleases.
Sonic Adventure ≠ Sonic Adventure DX. Sonic Adventure 2 ≠ Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.
The GameCube and Steam releases are not the same as the Dreamcast versions. They’re similar, but not the same.

SA 1 for me. I love sonic free movement. When I got SA 2 on release date that was my biggest complaint. Sonic was so stiff and he couldn't do quick turns as easily not could I abuse the spin dash to get anywhere I was on maps. SA 2 took that away and make completely linear maps for each character. And maybe it was just me but I love ice cap. You have to grab on to spikes and turn and jump off them like a sonic platformer, land and run up the side then abuse the spin dash to get to top faster and the switch. Dont get me wrong I love SA 2 as well it was fun running thru stages as fast as possible but I always found myself going back to SA 1 just to replay ice cap and speed highway. (my absolute favorite stage)

SA1's level design (aside from Knuckles) is shit. SA2 has way better gameplay on the Speed and Mech stages

It's pretty much depends on people's opinion. SA did a pretty good job on making it simple, yet giving good details and make it like an "adventure" to travel around.
