I don't think it's a stupid take, I just think a lot of people are incredibly blinded by nostalgia and would bash me for claiming such a thing as my opinion. Both games were amazing at release, but Adventure just holds up a lot better today.

But it didn't hold my interest very much and while 64 isn't an bad game & has some improvements over 64 like the movesets & an own camera angle, it's also worst in terms of the structure, level designs, more obnoxious or repetitive missions and the fact u have to chase Shadow Mario throughout the entire main course instead of the amount of Shine Sprites u only need is absolutely tedious.
I remember I asked a friend once, “Who has better music? Sonic or Mario?” That f*cker told me “Mario.” What kinda answer is that? Mario has catchy music, I admit to that, but Sonic’s music has more personality, more attitude and atmosphere.
Sega would likely still be making consoles if the Saturn didn't fail and if they didn't waste time on the Neptune project, People often forget Nintendo was losing relevance after the Super Nintendo and had flops like the virtual boy; the original Game Boy was Nintendo's saving grace for over a decade, the N64 and Gamecube weren't the best selling consoles of their time.
I'm on the same vote. While I respect Mario 64 for it's revolutionary of 3D gaming and whatnot, the game didn't hold up to me that well. The controls & camera are so archaic and while I do find the first halve of the levels pretty solid ( minus Hazy Maze Cave ), the later halve starts to get an little bit obnoxious & repetitive. Especially with the likes of Tick Tock Clock & Rainbow Ride. While Adventure 1 isn't flawless either and had some part that's age, I had way more fun and easier time with SA1 than I have with Mario 64 and there's not an single gameplay style that I hate ( except Big's gameplay. But even that isn't all that bad. ).

@@mrhuman5092 trust me there are tons of differences some more under the hood which make the game worse. Although the worst version of it is the steam one so if i played dx id probably play it on the gamecube
you forgot to mention the super sonic story, as of right now in Sonic games it's kinda common thing already but tbh they really deserve props on managing to make a challenging boss fight to an invincible charcter.
I think it's really hard for many people to separate "fun" from "importance". Yes, Mario 64 was groundbreaking. But that doesn't automatically make it fun anymore. And I agree that Sonic Adventure wins in the fun department by a pretty wide margin.
Sonic adventure was so impressive for 1998 Both games age well except sonic adventure because of face expressions But it is not a bad thing cuz it is one of the first 3d games to offer facial expressions
It’s hilarious how all the sonic fans here are giving logical reasoning for why they like sa1 more than mario 64 and the Only come back mario fans can come up with is 1 word
From a first-timers perspective, you're right about how Mario 64 is more about finding where to go. However, when you already know all the places to go, and know the game like the back of your hand, it can be pretty fun to try and find new ways, intentional or unintentional, of getting all the stars and trying to get them as fast as you can.
@@DanielAntovski Yes, and I wasn't saying anything against Sonic Adventure. Sonic Adventure is one of my favorite games ever. I think I was just defending that point of Mario 64. It's been 10 months, I don't remember exactly.
If people praise Mario 64 and OOT to high heavens, then Sonic Adventure should MUCH better. It’s aged a trillion times better in terms of level design, controls, camera, etc. Yeah it’s shown it’s age now, but so what? It’s an old game it’s inevitable to happen to any old game. It’s still a fun time.
How to fix Marip 64: For each star you get on a level, you should still and always stay to the level, it got pretty annoying and tedious returning to the castle EVERY SINGLE TIME for ONE mission. And i don't like the N64, that controller sucks, the control sticks breaks easily.
Adventure definitely aged better than SM64. The controls, the soundtrack, extra playable characters. The hub world really isn't that bad and the camera controls aren't the best but you could easily get around that. The Chao garden isn't as good as Adventure 2's garden but it gives you something extra to do even after completing the game.
SA1 is still playable, people who can't control Sonic simply suck at the game. While Sonic 2006 had bad controls, mediocre games like Shadow the Hedgehog had responsive controls. So the myth of "Sonic can't control well in 3D" was always a lie.
@@millabasset1710 I wouldn't say people suck at the game if they can't control sonic in 3D. It depends what game your playing. For example, games like Sonic Hereos and Shadow feel like your on ice all the time but games like generations are really easy to play. If your transitioning from a nintendo game such as mario, it could be quite hard getting used to sonic's controls. In my opinion, I think sonic will always be kinda easy and if its hard its probably because of some shit level design.
I have no idea why anyone ever complains about Mario 64's controls. Playing it again some 20 years later or so it still controls great while Sonic sometimes goes a little too fast for his own good in Sonic Adventure. I think the controls are good in both, but I have to assume that people who think the Mario 64 controls are bad just suck at platformers. If that's the case then no wonder they prefer Sonic Adventure since it poses practically no challenge whatsoever.
The controls are fine, the controller sucks. Sonoc does not go too fast, they really got his speed dead on on the adventure games. I wouldn't say I'm bad at platforms, I've 100% every Mario game galaxy onward, and while adventure isn't particularly difficult, it's tough enough. 64 is only difficult because of that controller and levels that don't guide you enough
Nah sa1 still has challenge. Also I think Sonics speed is fast enough. Idk why it's always an argument that he goes "too fast" people do tend to use that argument also for the 2D games of sonic. Also people don't suck when they say that they don't like the controls but I feel like that they should have made atleast the platforms bigger because it's so easy to fall off in so many areas in Mario 64 which makes it annoying af sometimes.
@@Fungiarts All I said was he goes a little too fast sometimes, and I think that's true. For the most part it's fine though. Honestly if you think the platforms should be bigger then I don't think you've very good at platformers. Never had any problems with it even when I was 7 years old.
@@cangrejopendejo4909 I am pretty good. Hell I went through super Mario Galaxy 2. It's just that Mario 64 lacks guidance (to be fair sonic adventure does that to with it's hubworlds) but still. I am pretty good actually but I haven't fully mastered it yet. Also I could use the same argument when it comes to sonics speed. You have to you know get good. Sonics speed is perfectly fine if you get good.
I posted a video about Sonic Adventure 2 this past week that you should definitely check out, but I'm not gonna do sa2 vs. sunshine because I feel like Sunshine takes a lot of hate from people nowadays and Adventure 2 is one of the more well-received Sonic games.
I do agree with this video a lot. Maybe it is because I grew up with Sonic Adventure while I played the Mario games a bit later but even nowadays, I find a more easier time revisiting Sonic Adventure then I do Mario 64. Not saying Mario 64 is a bad game, far from it actually. I think it is a revolutionary game that set the standards for 3D platforming but I don't really need to tell anyone that, it is pretty much it's legacy. I just have more fun with Sonic Adventure.
I have more fun with adventure by a landslide, Mario 64 is more revolutionary and important to gaming, but sonic adventure plays better today and is a blast
2:12 Mario 64 is not the first platformer to do this. That would be the 1994 game Geograph Seal. The first platformer with the camera was the 1995 game jumping flash. Mario 64 didn't innovate on the camera in any way. The only thing i can give it credit for is the anolauge stick, which sega kinda did at the same time, but came out a month later. Correction, you can't give mario 64 credit for the stick because it was already common place in arcades. it also was popular on a lot of third party controllers.
Sonic adventure, Crash, & Jak & Daxter were my childhood platformers. I played 64 at neighbors house’s but ehh it’s alright. I think sunshine is the Best Mario game (Which is controversial) & also apart of my childhood.
While I don't agree with some of them, I really do respect the points you ended up putting forth, honestly by the end of the video it had me looking at both of the games (mainly SA1) a bit differently. Mario 64 will still be the better game overall in my book, but I definitely think that you laid out your reasons for liking SA1 more very well and made a pretty compelling argument for it.
0:35 Don't Worry about it Dude I Have Played Super Mario 64 Before and I Never Played Sonic Adventure Dreamcast Before But I Would like to get my own Sega Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure Dreamcast Too as Well
It took Sega so long to make a proper 3D Sonic game, that even Sonic Adventure couldn't save Sega after Sonic Jam, Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R--none of which are terrible. Still a 3D Sonic game basically took 2 generations to manifest.
Finally, someone else who doesn't think 64's camera is awful! I never really had much of a problem with 64's camera, I didn't play 64 until high school and instead grew up with both galaxy games and also eventually played Sunshine before ever playing 64, but once I did, it always worked rather well for me with only a few hiccups here and there and I thought it really held its own compared to the other 3 3D Marios I've played (more like 2 since both Galaxies have basically identical cameras), sure it's not absolutely stellar or something but I never really noticed any major negatives with it either, and yet I've seen everyone else say 64 has a horrible camera and I just don't see that.
Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you, grew up with the galaxy games, went back and played 64 in high school. Having any camera control is better than what galaxy provided for exploring, and for the actual first attempt at this type of camera system, 64 is surprisingly solid.
Both games are great, but I agree with Sonic Adventure being the better game And if anybody reading this thinks Super Mario 64 is the better game, I still respect your opinion. Mario 64 is a great game as well
Fun Fact: Sonic Adventure 2 is on the gamecube, the game is called sonic adventure 2 battle. Even though the first sonic game I played is sonic adventure 2, I have been trying to revisit older 2d sonic games, mostly through Sonic Mega Collection on the gamecube.

@@MarioGamer2.0657Nah, sonic was made to be sega’s mascot and overall face of the company. He was made to be excessively different from mario in terms of gameplay, controls, physics, and concept. Just because he’s “Mario’s op” doesn’t justify him being in existence because of a character that previously dominated the gaming industry.
@@MarioGamer2.0657 This is also blatantly false. SEGA created sonic for the sole purpose of creating a mascot and overall face of the company. But when sales reached to Mario’s standards, they then became enemies.
I know i' m a bit late to the party, but in my opinioni Mario 64 Will Always hold more interest than Sonic Adventure, because if you boil these two games down, they are great games with some unecessary padding. And Adventure Is a Fun game, but that' s It. Mario 64 holds mamy mysteries and Legends that are famous across gaming, It leaves you thinking, and thats what separates the two. And the soundtrack emphasises that. While Sonic Adventure has countless bangers, Mario 64 excels in the ambience, like in Jolly Roger bay and its calming music ( even if Deep in the water there Is One of the scariest enemies in a videogame) and the stories that people have with this game. Just do a Quick test: which One was cerished and Remembered more: Sonic Adventure or Mario 64?
Sa1 is better IMO since The only time I’m frustrated with the game is bigs story and the perfect chaos fight while Mario 64 a bunch of levels and stars are migraine inducing especially tic toc clock

The controller was really bad though.

Mario 64 is indeed faaaaar better than sonic 3d blast, but that wasn't a main line game. It's like saying Kirby’s transition to 3d was Kirby’s dream course and not the Forgotten land.
@@jeremymklinger Exactly they were experimenting with 3D with sonic because a character like sonic if not any video game character is hard to transition to 3D. You have to balance the world around sonic so he can fit into the environment well because of his speed.
Sonic Adventure was a great piece of tech at its time, truly showcased the power of the Dreamcast (though it lasted for a year only...) but outside of that, couldn't even set a standard for the Sonic franchise going forward. Super Mario 64? It was a revolutionary game. Without it, 3D platformers wouldn't be. It was so great that to this day it's the standard for making a 3D platformer...to such a degree that from what they took from 64 (and other 3D Marios), SEGA managed to create a close to perfect 3D Sonic game: Frontiers.
I've played SM64DS and Sonic Adventure 2 and SM64DS is much more fun. I'm currently stuck on Pumpkin Hill. I spent like 20 minutes and only found a single shard.
Sonic adventure still looks gorgeous and has amazing controls... mario 64 looks pretty bad these days and i think the controls and collision are absolute garbage and the camera is abysmal
Not comparing graphics because 1 came out 2 years later?... if only nintendo fanboys had the same mentality when it came to the megadrive... seeing as that came out 2 years before the snes, yet all they do is say how the graphics on megandrive are “inferior”
No wonder the GameCube version for Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut looked SO MUCH BETTER! But, with how Sonic looks today, Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 deserves a remaster. Also, just imagine how the graphics will look with today’s consoles! Also, Super Mario 64 on the Switch REALLY looks good on there through Super Mario: 3D All-Stars. Also, Super Mario 64 was my first EVER video game AND the first Mario game I ever played. Sonic Mega Collection was the first Sonic game I played. Adventure was the second, and Adventure 2.
I like Sonic and I like Sonic Adventure and I like Donkey Kong 64 and my favorite Sonic Videogames are Shadow the Hedgehog Sonic 06 Sonic Unleashed and Sonic and The Black Knight. I also like Creepypasta Sonic and Spyro more than SCP Foundation Mario and Crash Bandicoot.

Great video. Most of the people who say Sonic Adventure is bad have only played the Game Cube/PC version, that's a very bad port. The original version is way more stable. It's so sad that a bad port ruined the legacy of this game. I don't like Super Mario 64 because it's a very different kind of game compared to the classic Mario games.
Glad ya liked the video! And yeah, I agree there, adventure's legacy has really been ruined by the bad port, as well as the series going downhill nor long after.
i think mario games are just more challenging than sonic games. like, in sonic they put more in speed than challenge, but with mario its the opposite. so, if u want to challenge urself or suffer a lil, mario is for ya(except mario odyssey, comparing to other mario games its much more casual). but if u came from school, university or watever and just wanna relax a lil and go fast, u can try sonic games. but remember, sonic and mario arent rivals. everyone have their own opinions and arguing about whos better is just stupid, play watever u want, my dudes. Edited: or u can try to play sonic in mario 64 by downloading a rom hack, LMFAO
I don't feel like waiting! Hate and death threat! Okay, now that I've actually watched the video, I'll give a serious response. I've always enjoyed Sonic Adventure more than Mario 64. This was just confirmation bias for me.
For an adventure game, that’s the point. Not just to wonder but find clues, and puzzles. This is not a hate comment. Don’t get me wrong, I love the 2D games, but for an open world, it’s more adventure, and finding what you need to do.
I played Sonic Adventure on dreamcast today on my crt. It was a blast! I appeciated it more than playing my downloaded Sonic Adventure on my ps3. More authentic.
I maybe more of a sonic and Sega fan But Mario and sonic are both Equally cool Why should it matter which is cooler all that matters is that 2 of these Video game characters are one of the most beloved video game franchises of all time. ALSO HAPPY 30TH ANAVERSERY SONIC THE HEDGEHOG AND MARIO
Ehhhh... while the Sonic franchise has some of the best soundtracks in gaming, reducing Mario's soundtracks to simply worse than anything Sonic has done is such a gross understatement (and a stupid one as well). Not only does Mario have a myriad of fantastic soundtracks (like Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Odyssey), these have, ultimately, completely different purposes than Sonic's soundtracks Sonic soundtracks are fast paced, complex, deliciously layered, and funky, serving the gameplay really well. Mario has a much more varied history with soundtracks. They are generally grandiose, immersive, incredibly eclectic, playful, and even emotional, and however different they may sound, they always feel "Mario" and serve the gameplay really well. Before Super Mario 64, you could say that Mario soundtracks were generally not as a good as Sonic's (which is still a "ehh" statement, to me), but after that... it'd just be wrong to put one over the other. Both franchises have some of the best soundtracks in gaming, they're just doing completely different things - and saying one is unequivocally better than the other is just... dumb.

Nice analysis, Sonic Adventure is definitively better in my opinion. I too did not grow up with either game but have tried both and I could not enjoy 64. Best of wishes and Great video 👍
I'd probably mark Sonic Adventure's personality and presentation down as a negative. While I think the overall setup is great (that opening FMV encapsulates everything perfectly), the more hands-on approach to storytelling brings it down; the dialogue, the cut scenes, some of the extended story plots. But that's probably a symptom of the time. I think, like classic Sonic, or maybe something closer to Ocarina of Time, they could have told a really interesting and high-stakes story by doing less of it.
The only good thing in SA are Sonic and Tails levels. The rest aren’t good. Amy is very slow and Big levels are waste of time. Gamma levels are not fun at first, but it gets better after. Knuckles are not fun and the radar system is buggy. So how a game thats only 33% is fun is better than one that is 100%? Mario different varieties like the wingcap, metal and invisible is better than treasure hunting, fishing and go slow with limited moveset? When it comes to gameplay mechanics Mario 64 have it beats by miles. The one thing I love about SA1 is Sonic spindash, that thing can get you to many places if done correctly.
How como Sonic adventure has a faithful transition to 3D if the levels don't have branching paths as the 2D ones and only Sonic and Tails' levels (2/6 of the game) go for the actual platforming/speed through a level approach? And two characters that feel more like a chore to play as to get the final ending doesn't help much to the case of Sonic adventure being objectively better than Mario 64. Anyone can have their respective favorite by the standard one chooses like the presentation but it seems that you relied more in that aspect to compare both over others. Mario 64' strenght I would say is the liberty of movement and how it lets the player approach each challenge however it wants
crash bandicoot was 3d but super linear. sonic adventure was a little bit more open but still very linear. Mario 64 is legendary because the levels were actually designed for 3d. It wasn't just 2d levels converted to 3d. It completely reinvented level design. So sonic adventure is a good game and I think better in many ways you mention, but it was not as revolutionary.
It's about time that someone spited the facts! Adventure 1 and 2 dominates Mario 64 in every single way but i will always somewhat respect Mario 64 for being the first real 3D game even after the fact that Sega showed how a 3D game should be done a few years later.

Sonic adventure was so impressive for 1998
Both games age well except sonic adventure because of face expressions
But it is not a bad thing cuz it is one of the first 3d games to offer facial expressions

From a first-timers perspective, you're right about how Mario 64 is more about finding where to go. However, when you already know all the places to go, and know the game like the back of your hand, it can be pretty fun to try and find new ways, intentional or unintentional, of getting all the stars and trying to get them as fast as you can.
Isn't that like the whole point of sonic games?
@@DanielAntovski Yes, and I wasn't saying anything against Sonic Adventure. Sonic Adventure is one of my favorite games ever. I think I was just defending that point of Mario 64. It's been 10 months, I don't remember exactly.

Sonic Adventure is miles better and has aged a million times better. Like most N64 games Mario is impossible to play now.
@@jesuspernia8031cause super mario 64 is the most speedrunned game? and zelda is zelda
How to fix Marip 64:
For each star you get on a level, you should still and always stay to the level, it got pretty annoying and tedious returning to the castle EVERY SINGLE TIME for ONE mission.
The challenge in SA1 comes from mastering the levels to get the fastest time, further exemplified in SA2 with the ranking system
I personally prefer Mario 64 since it's such a replayable wonde that still holds up (at least for me) but cool video.

Can't wait for Super Mario Sunshine vs. Sonic Adventure 2
Also Toy Story 2
While I don't agree with some of them, I really do respect the points you ended up putting forth, honestly by the end of the video it had me looking at both of the games (mainly SA1) a bit differently. Mario 64 will still be the better game overall in my book, but I definitely think that you laid out your reasons for liking SA1 more very well and made a pretty compelling argument for it.
Thank you, I'm glad ya think so :)

It took Sega so long to make a proper 3D Sonic game, that even Sonic Adventure couldn't save Sega after Sonic Jam, Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R--none of which are terrible. Still a 3D Sonic game basically took 2 generations to manifest.
Whats your point exactly
Both games are great, but I agree with Sonic Adventure being the better game
And if anybody reading this thinks Super Mario 64 is the better game, I still respect your opinion. Mario 64 is a great game as well

Mario 64 holds mamy mysteries and Legends that are famous across gaming, It leaves you thinking, and thats what separates the two. And the soundtrack emphasises that. @@jeremymklinger Exactly they were experimenting with 3D with sonic because a character like sonic if not any video game character is hard to transition to 3D. You have to balance the world around sonic so he can fit into the environment well because of his speed.

Sonic games have had very good music over the years, probably better than anything Mario has
Very true
Ehhhh... while the Sonic franchise has some of the best soundtracks in gaming, reducing Mario's soundtracks to simply worse than anything Sonic has done is such a gross understatement (and a stupid one as well). Not only does Mario have a myriad of fantastic soundtracks (like Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Odyssey), these have, ultimately, completely different purposes than Sonic's soundtracks
Sonic soundtracks are fast paced, complex, deliciously layered, and funky, serving the gameplay really well.
Both franchises have some of the best soundtracks in gaming, they're just doing completely different things - and saying one is unequivocally better than the other is just... dumb.

Sonic adventure has actually always been marked better by everyone, and the people who I have met who didn’t agree are buried

OBJECTIVELY CORRECT
0:33 bruh sonic adventure is better, I agree;)
