    Using the CREATIVE STYLES/modes in video and photography? - Better “out of camera” images
    Today I show you the creative styles or modes in your camera … if you get frustrated when using the Picture Profiles in your camera and are struggling to get a good image from using S-log profiles…creative styles might be the way to go. They give you images that you can use right out of camera so no more editing your videos and jpeg photos.

    excellent video! although I like sony creative styles, this is also my biggest criticism on sony cameras: you cannot apply them after the picture has been taken. With fujifilm for example, not only can you develop the raw files in-camera applying their creative styles (film simulations) but at the same time you can tweak shadows and highlights and add grain....so if you don't need local adjustments, you can really have a finished image straight out of camera!

    • @mikesphotography

      Do you mean still images or videos? For videos with a high dynamic range, it's best to shoot in a flat profile, but only if you know how to colour grade properly.
      For stills, it's better to shoot in raw and then do all your editing in lightroom or an equivalent program.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it depends on what program you edit in. In lightroom you can either set it to give you the sidecar image, which is the jpeg it creates with this creative style used, or you can set it to create its own.
      The best way to work out what comes across for you and your system is to shoot the same photo with a few different styles and see if they look the same or if they all look different.

    Another informative video full of useful tips. Color profiles to me just kill more of the file. If there is a mistake then it takes even more to correct. When ever I use one after I just dislike the look. This after I so wanted a camera that does all those things. Oh I want to shoot this scene is green profile, nope hate it. Doing it later in post is easier for me. Thank you. Stay safe and sane.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most definitely Lance, these styles are a bit of a crutch for photography...like you said, it's always best to do all of this in post so you build up your image from the raw. 😁👍 It was an interesting test to do though, just to see how the different creative styles actually look like...more from a videography point of view.
      How are things over with you now?

  • @mrphillipwest
    @mrphillipwest 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello, thanks for the excellent demonstration video. I wonder if you could shed some light on something that is confusing to me. When I scroll through the Creative Styles list, there seems to be duplicate versions of all the Creative Styles but no way to differentiate between them. For example, there are two versions of Standard, Vivid, Neutral, Clear etc. So if I scroll from the top of the Creative Style list (e.g. from Standard to Sepia) the very next option (after Sepia) is another version of Standard; minus the changes I made to the first version of Standard. It’s like there are duplicates of all the Creative Styles with the exception of Sepia, and no way to really differentiate between them. If you could shed some light on this I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      SO the second set of creative styles all have numbers next to them, numbered 1-6. These are full customisable whereas the main set are set to their proprietary names. So with the ones numbered 1-6 you can change the starting style. You could have them all set to standard with whatever settings you want in them or you can pick your own style to start with.
      Does that make sense?

    Sepia didn’t fit = dog ate my homework 😁. Tried these in-cam variations but found them unappealing, more of a gimmic. Prefer editing profiles and presets in post - faster, easier. As you noted, lens color rendition can add to results combinations and permutations - do cams in a maker’s lineup also vary? E.g., same coloration for same lens on, say A9 vs A73?
    Wasn’t there a line in one of Shakespeare’s works about “her eyes were like two limpid pools of water”? 😁

    These picture profiles are useful for cameras where you don't have s-log or HLG (manufacturer intentionally cripples these models to sell more expensive ones).
    But how about losing the dynamic range when you squeeze DR information into flatter (more narrow) image? I'm talking about 8-bit video. You're just losing the color information during compressing it into narrow DR flat image.
    It's not like you're lifting the gain for blacks. It's more like lifting blacks to the level of shadows, replacing the information between these 2 levels.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It all depends on the lighting conditions you have... as a portrait photographer, you have to manipulate the light you have to make it work for your subject. This might be by moving your subject closer to the light source, using a diffuser to soften the light if there is too much contrast, or finding better light.
      Try watching some of Peter Hurley's videos. He talks about natural light when he first started in some of his earlier videos using a big window to light his portraits... and then later in his career, using flashes.
      With portraits it is all about getting the right light on the subject without having the background being too overpowering.
      In this one he gives a few tips about lighting your subject: th-cam.com/video/QIAZ7hfipDc/w-d-xo.html

    Great explanation, Mike. I will sometimes shoot in the black & white creative style in order to find subjects that work well buy using contrasting light. I always shoot JPG and RAW, so I still have the RAW file to edit if I decide that color is the way to go. What I have found is that it makes me concentrate more on how the light falls on a subject in B&W, which in the end can produce a better color image when I edit the RAW file. Hope you and your wife and enjoying Thailand. Take care, brother.

    I never use the creative styles from my Sony A7III. I shoot raw file only. Indeed, I use the camera on manual or Aperture priority only like as an analog camera.

      The best way to shoot. 😁👍
      This is more of a guide for people who might be struggling with colours after just buying the camera.
      Thanks for watching. 😁👍

    I don't know why, but in my a6400 red color looks orange-ish! I call it "carrot disaster"!!! I can fix it with PP, but not with Creative Style.

      Picture profiles definitely give you more control over your colours, once you understand them. The sony colours are a little tricky to get around with video but when you do know how to use them properly, they can give some amazing looking results!

      @@dimdimich1 Settings might varied for different PP, but try to change Color Phase and maybe Color Depth for "red".

      @@kovacz4433 thank you Dmitry, I will try to reduce phase and color depth for red.

      @@dimdimich1 If you reduce phase it'll go into green, if increase - into magenta, which might be better.

    So, what color IS your background supposed to be?

  • @IsaacRC
    @IsaacRC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the same Creative Style the colors change between Jpeg Raw and Movie (same WB,ISO,Aperture,Speed)-> drive.google.com/file/d/1bHvlxTrKUCVQ7BLPZjjuLSkADKv4mxWG/view?usp=sharing
    Its like having x3 Creatives Styles 😅
