I am kinda glad he wasnt that athletic, physically gifted are not as likely use there brains to there fullest. Bird was feared because you couldn't really explain why you just got beat so bad, with Jordan, koby, Shaq and a lot of other greats it would be obvious and done with a little flair.

What a thing to say about one of the greatest players ever, and to say it publicly. Not only was it classless, it has to be untrue, as Bird was one of the greatest in his time. Otherwise the same would apply to anyone in Rodman's era.

Huge fan of the Bird man... his competition with Magic is legendary, but IMHO if you haven't watched the documentary "A Courtship of Rivals", you don't fully understand how their lives intertwined, and what it did for the NBA at the time. I think it can rightly be said that they saved the NBA, and paved the way for so many great superstars who came later. Those of us who were watching the NBA at that time were privileged to watch that Celtic/Laker rivalry unfold, which gave us some of the best moments in NBA history.

  • @mrho4speed

To give credence to what Joe Dumars said consider this - in the first 9 years of Bird's career in games Bird played for the Celtics, the Celtics won 534 games and lost 177 games of the 711 total = a win % of 75.1% . I believe this could be the highest win % of any player for a 9 year stretch. Bill Russell's win % was 68%. Magic during the same 9 year stretch was 74.3% = 475 wins and 164 lost games of the 639. And Larry played in the stronger East and never had a teammate as good as Kareem. Bird as a rookie went to a 29 win team and with 1 player change to the roster in ML Carr and a new coach in Bill Fitch, Bird was the main reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game turnaround = the biggest single season turn around in NBA history. Look at what Bird did at Indiana State = a small school with zero basketball history!!! We all love this game and thank you for sharing this!!

However, The amount of stories about Bird's trash talking about what he was going to do before doing it and then doing exactly what he said is unmatched by any other player in NBA history.
Larry worked hard, came to play every game and gave 100%, there was no "load management".
Bird's intensify for the game was off the charts.

Bob Gibson of the MLB St Louis Cardinals once told a teammate that was making nice with a first basemen after reaching when he returned to the dugout, “he’s the enemy, don’t make nice with him”. Paraphrased.
Hitters feared standing in the hitters box. They definitely only crowded the plate once!!

Hey Larry was the shit! Just check him out . He didn't care how big you were or who you were. He was honest to prove his mind a very big icon in the game . Much bigger than you realize. He stood his ground and planted his feet on it. Thank you very much for this Mike

Larry's college was playing mine and we heard they had a future all American on their team. During warm ups we tried to guess which black player he was. Well we were wrong. He beat our league champion team and set our arena scoring record. He was a beast! Peace from Northern Michigan.

These types of videos are crucial for younger NBA fans to review....glad to see Larry getting the respect...Larry's D Rating much higher than Pat Ewings...even though most don't know about Larrys Defense Skills...He was a hell of a defender.

I’m here for Larry legend, my personal GOAT! The admiral is great but wrong. Larry was much more athletic than most give him credit and he was the complete player, period! He best the rest to beat the best!
Name me another player that won three titles, three league MVP’s, three three point championships consecutively, the original founder of the 50/40/90 club. And won as a coach and an executive!
    One, Larry legend, that’s it!

Top NBA career combined stats per game (pts, reb, ast, stl, blk) career fg%,tp%,ft%
    1. Jordan 44.7 -50-33-84
    2. Lebron 44.4 -51-35-73
    3. Bird 43.1 -50-38-89
    4. Kareem 42.9 -56-06-72
    5. Durant 40.8 -50-38-88
Bird had the second highest winning percentage super close right behind Magic (10 games off).

I agree. One time he left in the 3rd quarter and he was one steal off of the super rare quadruple double. The coach asked if he wanted to go back in and he said no, because they were up by a ton.

Saw him against the Phoenix Suns in 1985. I had been trying to get a ticket since I moved to Phoenix in 1979. When the Celtics and Bird came to town, it was impossible. I left Phoenix in 1989 and I never got another one. His night is imprinted on my mind. I know Ill remember this even if demented : 32 11 8. He shot one three and hit it. Celtics won by 17.
