Good ad, if I didn't know Opera was just chromium and will have the same ad blocking issues as chrome when manifest 3 hits, I'd try it out. Opera use to be so lightweight too, but they had to switch to chromium. Meh either way, keep getting paid goose.

The fact that you can get 8th place is hilarious because it has to be exponentially more difficult to getting than 1st lol
I'm the fellow who the the 8th place points finish, and it's exponentially harder than you'd think. Getting 4th-6th isn't so bad, 7th and 8th are a whole new level of difficulty:
- As stated, 2 drivers are programmed to always finish high, and 3 are programmed to always finish 6th-8th. It takes a little luck and track manipulation (Wario Stadium bolt, Royal Raceway bolt, etc) to get the crappy CPU to pile up enough points to pull ahead of you. Bowser's Castle - once those bad CPU pull ahead, they're usually home free as none of the track obstacles are loaded until you physically see them.
-If you have the same amount of points as another CPU, you're always given the tiebreaker, so everyone else needed 5 or more points. The bad CPU generally slow down REALLY bad when racing in the top 4, and the good CPU are borderline light speed when they're relegated to the back of the pack.
8th place was actually incredible. Real talent there.

12:15 I think to be the real reason why theres no waterfall in Royal Raceway might be more interesting than you think. Mario Kart 64 and Super Mario 64 were both being developed at the same time, and if you look at pre-release footage of the castle you notice that the little beach where the cannon is wasn't implemented yet, and when you look at royal raceway's castle, the beach is also missing. I think that its likely that the castle was based off an earlier version that didn't have the waterfall. Even if thats not the case, I think my theory at least explains why the beach is missing. Anyways, great video! I love learning more about my favorite Nintendo console and games and your channel has exactly what Im looking for.

Or if you want an in-universe reason, Peach is always moving her castle to new locations, either herself, or through coercion (such as Dad stealing it in Paper Mario/Mario Galaxy, or the Undodog blowing the old one up... you know, maybe "moving" isn't always the right word...). It was supposedly originally on a hill when Mario first arrived, then next to that waterfall shortly after Mario World, then in the middle of Royal Raceway after that, then Toad Town. Or it could be an entirely new castle each time, I know Dad builds castles all up and down the Darklands, and even several across the Kingdoms he's in the process of conquering at the moment. I used to have a really nice castle on Chocolate Island that Dad built me, but Mario straight up erased it with a magical push broom or something. _How did he even bloody do that?!_

Slight correction for 16:43: you ONLY have to be in 4th place or worst to get the "bombed at trophy ceremony" to happen, so this is technically easier than the video suggests!
The hard part was getting 8th place. The bombing part was extra.
technically, the bombing is always there, you can see it in the background if you are on the podium.

I belive by "worst end when screen" he's referring to it saying you placed 8th. Not the bombing portion itself. But it was worded pretty ambiguously.

When I was a kid, I always wondered how the game calculated the time of bots arriving after you. Like, you arrive at 1:28, press A a couple of time and the machine tells you that bowser finished at 2:30, but 1 minute hasn't elapsed yet.
The game had to arbitrarily decide how long bowser took. I wonder how it decides that.
It may place them on the same driving routine as the player's kart once a race is over. This would simplify the time estimate into an instant and exact time.
It's been many years, and I don't remember if NPCs can collect/use items after all players have crossed the finish line.
@@LevantineR1 NPCs don't collect items ever. If they happen to drive though item boxes, the box will disappear so that you cannot collect it, but NPCs get items awarded randomly and without driving through item boxes. It's most apparent in Toad's Turnpike: The items are in side ditches which the NPCs never drive into, yet somehow they have items.

@@BolpatIt's easiest to verify in Mario Kart DS/7 where you can see the computers and what items they have at any given moment, they tend to get items very randomly regardless of if they're near a set of items, but they also seem to only have items apply when you're physically near them which is why it always seems like items only affect you. To compensate, the AI is programmed to have heavier effects when hit by certain items such as blooper forcing them to slow down and drive erratically and they'll randomly take damage from placed obstacles regardless of where you place them (as you put a banana on a narrow gap impossible to drive by and come back next lap to see the banana still there, like there's NO way they dodged it, yet you hear them spin out behind you.)
Mario Kart Tour has even funnier item logic. It seems the AI opponents never get more than 1 item at a time (while you can get up to 3) regardless of character choice, but will randomly get a frenzy the same way you get a "Star item" in some modes. They too also get items randomly regardless of where the item boxes are, but in tour it's nearly impossible to miss item boxes as they respawn instantly when hit due to the more score oriented nature of the game.
I had no idea finishing in 8th place was even possible, the luck needed for that must be insane.
its a lot easier to do this with 2 players. you can alternate who gets 4th, thus you both have 2 and only need each CPU one 3rd or better finish.
But still massive luck factor.

I got stuck in the bat box when i was sleeping at a friend's house in 4th grade he had star power and hit me into it. We left the console on all night so we could show his big brother.

You don't need to get 8th place for the bob-omb finish, any non-podium finish will have that cut-scene.
That’s pretty funny. I guess this game has been around so long, and so few people fail to get in the top-3, not many folks ever see that. Also, what kid wasn’t quick to hit the reset button when they lost that bad? Good trivia though

Coming 8th place is legit impressive. I can't imagine how long that took. Is there a video explaining how he did it? I tried doing as badly as possible but it's really hard. I think I managed to finish 5th place once many years ago.
There's a video series called 'the quest for 8th place' where someone shows hiw he did it on all cups. He had to finish 4th every time while making sure those without points all got 5 or more at the end by helping them out and targeting all your items to the best racers. Very difficult.

I spent so much time trying to come in 8th place in grand prix mode. I think the best (worst) I ever got was 7th though. What I did was the shortcut on wario stadium to get to lap 3 as quickly as possible, so the ai would rubberband like crazy, and I hoped some of the weaker cpus got lucky to get top three for that one course. Then I just hoped for the best on the rest of the races.
Just when you thought the wild, wacky world of Mario Kart 64 lore couldn't get more obscure, this video appears to alleviate our curiosity. That this man, RuWhiteGoose, toils endlessly over steeled, bone-crushing, blood-boiling anvils of obsidian and hellfire to create these obscure, idiosyncratic videos is a testament to the thoughtfulness and thoroughness of the European Spirit of which he encompasses.

Early days of TH-cam was so efficient when it came to titling videos. Just straight to the point, otherwise no one would click on it.
I was so disappointed when they remade Royal Raceway and turned the jump into a fixed-angle cannon shot. Being able to mess it up is what makes it fun!
The Star Cup in Mario Kart 64 is my favorite overall cup in the entire series. One of the things I like about it is that each course has places where you can force the computer drivers to mess up and make them finish in the wrong order.
Wario Stadium: Easiest one, just place a banana peel before the big jump and the computer will end up way behind. It bugged me when Double Dash's Waluigi Stadium made it so falling off the ramp doesn't punish drivers like that.
Sherbet Land: It's rare, but sometimes you can make them fall into the water on one of the turns before the finish line.
Royal Raceway: Occasionally, an AI driver will fall into the water in such a way that they keep falling back in repeatedly for the remainder of the race, guaranteeing a last place finish.
Bowser's Castle: With a well-placed banana peel, you can make them fall off the narrow bridge into the lava. This one is far enough from the finish line that they'll often have time to rubber band, though, unless they hit additional items along the way.
Because this cup is so manipulable, it makes sense that the 8th place finish guy used it for his attempts.
Wow! I've been playing this game since release (still my favourite Mario Kart) and I didn't think it would be possible to get 8th in a grand prix. I mean, theoretically, yes, but not actually doing it. I've never seen that cutscene before either. I'm surprised they programmed that in!
I always end up with the usual scenario, where I come first, but there's a couple of CPUs who just keep bugging me. And usually there's a few who do so bad that I can't imagine them EVER placing even if I tried to help them! XD
The waterfall on Koopa Troopa beach could also be artificial. Maybe the race organizers didn't want contestants to go backwards through the cave on accident but wanted it to be available as a shortcut from the other direction.
Like, where does the water even go? It doesn't connect to the sea afterwards either.

It's incredible when doing as bad as you possibly can requires infinitely more skill than actually being the best.
I have always thought that there is something surreal about out-of-bounds areas.
They are essentially areas that you aren't supposed to be able to reach, and it is a very strange experience to explore those places;
especially when they appear to be surprisingly developed.

That was very difficult to pull off I also saw another video by ShadowOfMyles where he advanced to the next course while finishing 5th. What a legend that Myles was... Too bad those stories of him possibly cheating in world records (if they are true).
honestly, you should just make entire Icebergs on these games you know a lot about. Despite my video game trivia knowledge, I DIDN'T know about the Kamek thing, so if that's "surface level" I'd love to know all the other 'surface level' stuff.

Even all these years later, beyond the goldeneye origins, this is still a comfortable and cozy place to be.
Something I did a lot on Warios dirt track was to save a lightning until the last lap then use it before the best 2 opponents went over the large jump in the track, causing them to fall and usually end up in last place together, the game usually would keep those 2 opponents as the most skilled for the rest of the series making a easier win. Could come in handy for trying to achieve a 8th place finish run?

It's so nice of you to bring mention to Myles "ShadowOfMyles" Bukrim. I was a huge fan of his back in the day and even talked with him back when TH-cam had private messaging. He seemed like a really nice guy. He doesn't do stuff like this anymore due to moving on with life and having a personal ailment that affected him greatly as he got older, but I still appreciate him for being a pioneer of many awesome N64 records and findings.

1st to 3rd give out 18 points a race for 72 points in a round. However, there are only 12 ways for the top 7 at the end to have earned points. Thus, at a minimum two racers only scored points in one race, with the candidates being those with 9 points or less. On the flip side, all racers who scored more than 9 did so in two races, thus taking up at least two of the top 3 spots over the course of a round. Below is a breakdown that fits with each driver in the top five taking two slots and with sixth and seventh getting one slot each. (The letter and number combination shows a potential method for which race (A-D) and which place (1st-3rd) each driver took during the round.)
Peach's 15 - Peach won a race and got second in a second race. (B2) (C1)
Luigi's 12 - Luigi won a race and got third in a second race. (B3) (D1)
Wario's 12 - Wario won a race and got third in a second race. (A3) (B1)
Mario's 9 - Mario likely got second and third in two races. (C2) (D3)
Yoshi's 9 - Yoshi likely got second and third in two races. (C3) (D2)

You saved the best for last!! That 8th place finish is incredible and something I've always wondered about. I've always been fascinated by runs where all the opponents get at least 1 point. I remember in Super Mario Kart having a few where the points were very evenly distributed and it being very satisfying haha.

Thank you for a truly remarkable episode. Friends, I really like how Mario Kart 64 acknowledges our planet with the billboard signs, e.g. Yoshi1's similarity to Mobil. I find this very charming and healthy, that it is reaching out to us and showing love for our life and planet. Whereas the opposite would be slowly becoming detached from reality.
Idea for why the waterfall isn't there. That's a fake peach's castle built for the sake of the race rather than the actual location of peach's castle in mario 64.

Best guess on the waterfall at Koopa Troopa Beach is that maybe there's a spring that seeps up through the rocks. Though, that leaves another question: Why is there no runoff from the waterfall to the shore?

Oh I'm sure the different teams developing tracks optimized them differently... But it would also be under-whelming if every single track had a "JumboTron" TV. They picked the tracks that needed them most in context.

I've been able to trick the game in order to let me pass without finishing top 4. It happens in Yoshi's Valley. You have to be overtaken right in front of the finish line and finish 5th. I've been able to replicate it but have never seen anything about it online.

The is one that happens often but no one talkes about, sometimes one of the cpus in a race end up going much faster so you can reach them no matter what, happens often like the cpu just goes faster
I have a strategy guide from back then that tells how to do some of those big jumps to skip laps n such. Taught me about the star and the train tunnel or the big jump on rainbow road or wario stadium and royal raceway. . Not everything though

I definitely wanna do DKR, Perfect Dark, Pokemon Snap, and possibly Mario Tennis if I can find enough about it. I think I could pull off an OoT one, maybe. The Banjos are just such a blind spot for me.

There is none. Jimbo didn't record the whole session. But he definitely did stuff like troll the Top 3 racers with lightning on Wario's Stadium and Royal Raceway Lap 3, so that the "bottom" group finished in the top 3 those races.
