@Al Barbarī Well again I'm really sorry for this, I too hate the imperialistic nature of the western world, I live here and I hate it, I see it everyday and I know that they are actually the source of those conflicts in one way or another for most of the time, so I deeply apologize for this and I wish I could do more than that if I had the power too. Stay safe!
My opinion is honestly just to put armed security on the ships or have ships gather for example in groups before they reach the area where pirates raid and have a navy ship escort them. If they say about 60 ships pass each day I think that is somewhat possible to do. It's better to wait an hour more or so and pass safely than have the entire crew as a hostage who knows whether they'll even get back ever from Somalia.
Yeah, seems like a huge waste of money. They're there to fight pirates and yet they can't actually do anything. Might as well have "No pirating" signs floating around since they'd be just as effective.
They can’t attack it. It would result in the death of possibly all hostages, too many casualties, and maybe even the destruction of the ship. Once the Ship is 100% taken over, there’s nothing you can do about it.
@@davidmiles They can't board hijacked ships because every single hostage would have their head lobbed clean off, also do you know why you think its ineffective? Because you only hear about it when they fuck up, not when they succeed.
The ship at 7:03 looks a lot like the Maersk Alabama, the vessel that was hijacked only a few months later. So it's an accurate assessment by the captain, the freeboard was indeed low enough.
Khobotov waves generated from cargo ships propelling toward opposite vector can cause nearby fishes to scuttle off. Common practice for fisherman to request big ships to recharter their course to prevent them from intervening with fishing within an area. Know your facts before you share your thoughts.
I saw another video where a war ship did catch the pirates but said they could not prove they were pirates, so gave them food and drinks and probably a hug and let them go. The captain of the freighter was very upset about it and said the navy ships were useless and did not help them.
They couldn't engage at that time because the crew of the ship would've likely been executed had they approached. Let's hope they managed to shadow the ship at night and approach unnoticed to take care of the situation. Also, remember earlier in the video they said they have to specifically catch the pirates right before they're going to board the ship, as that's when they don't have control over the vessel yet and are free to take them out.
They'll track the ship and collect more intelligence on the vessel. More than likely special forces will step in before it reaches Somali. It takes a few days to sail back that way anyways.
If you corner a dangerous animal it will lash out, if you give it the option to escape it will take it without harm, when that happens you can track it and take out without risks. These pirates are just dumb beasts after all, humans have patients and these creatures will be killed.
Yes as others have pointed out basically at that point it's a hostage rescue situation so they're going to call in even more crazier special ops if need be but the main thing is they need to keep an eye on the ship in the meantime.
Exactly....there is no point, except to waste the citizens money. They likely killed more whales firing into the ocean and flushing their poo in the ocean than actual pirates.

in this episode we saw the terrible security breach, where a ship asks for help they go to the ship they don't see anything and then the same ship changes course after being attacked and taken kidnapped unbelievable
The British be like “ we have to fill out 2500 health and safety forms to send the helicopter over the ship” “to board we need to fill out 40,000 forms and finish Brexit - so never”
yes, thats what i told my officers when i was in the navy many years ago when this pirate-issue started happening in 2008, but they shrugged it off, because they want to make good money serving on the sea outside of their nation, which gives them extra pay. its a big fucking waste of tax payer moeny.
What about making some kind of affiliate arrangement with the local fishermen where, in exchange for their ships being tagged and remotely surveilled, they are paid some weekly stipend? Private companies could do this while working with the navy to pass along intelligence or something. That way, the navy doesn't have to check every single ship that's on the water.
Cyrus the Acceptable then you would have to trust the fisherman how do you know there isn’t a pirate among them or they are being paid to provide fame information to lure them away from high value targets
Why would pirates be deterred by hoses spraying water into the sea? (19:15) Is it to show the pirates that they will be sprayed if they try to board? Wouldn't the pirates expect that at the very least to be a cargo ship's boarding defense?
No logic used in defence of that pirate capture. If the crew is headed to Somalia you would be killing them by breaching or by leaving them. The pirates are an enemy so the boat should have been breached...they are causing this problem by having an easy give up point, proving they are incapable of dealing with this problem until the rules of engagement have been changed. They are allowing them to "forage off the enemy" to grow their forces.
my very first question when the 3 speed boats speed away WASNT THAT A HINT so why didnt they send out helicopters to still intercept them . all the pirates did was probably turn around and come back .
okay, 1 mothership and 3 (or more) speedboats closing in, demanding the vessel to slow down and just because they turn around when helos close in, both navies be like "nah, it will be fine"?
And the fact that they said that they were fishermen 🤯. The problem is that there are only a few military vessels in that area, while merchant ships number the hundreds if not the thousands. Btw, the Saldanha ship was brought back after paying 1.9 million USD, then a German ship was pirated. The foreign naval presence needs to be higher, or else ships will keep being hijacked
The pirate in the beginning was saying we only attack fishing boats that over fish in our waters. The subtitles explaining what he was saying is lying to make this video fit the image Ross is trying to paint. I wish some one would drop Ross off to alshabab so they can have a conversation.

The ship I was attached to patrolled the North Arabian in 2007. I was part of her boarding party. Pretty damn dangerous area. I feel for the crew and the frustration of feeling helpless. It's a shitty feeling.
These anti-piracy patrols have to be so frustrating. In the scene about 3/4s the way through, an RN and USN ship both deployed helos to a scene of potential piracy, and helos are incredibly expensive to operate per hour, all for naught (on one day at least) for a window of opportunity that may be as little as 10-15 minutes. Add onto that, you have a very delicate situation where people from the UK, US and France trying to board ships flagged from Somalia, and there are so many laws that they have to balance when doing this, plus the simple fact that fishermen from a very poor country probably don't want to be harassed several times a week by people in warships. This is so difficult, I feel for anybody who has to be part of it.
I was thinking the same thing. I am also thinking it would be easier if the ships that want protection were made to wait until a group of 15 or 20 were ready to go and then one warship could escort an entire group. That would be easier than trying to run all over the place to protect ships that are 8 or 10 miles away from each other.

"Q" ships in WWII were freighters with camoflaged cannons & machine guns. The Germans used them in the Pacific and Atlantic to destroy Allied shipping. After they approached enemy ships, for some innocent reason, they would run out the guns, offload the crew, and sink the ship. Pretty sneaky, huh. John Wayne was in one of the movies about that.

My wife's brother (they are Ukranian) is a part of a large Ukrainian agency that specializes in recruiting ex-spetznaz and other ex-special forces individuals from all over the world for the purpose of defending cargo ships, oil tankers, off-shore rigs, etc. He makes about 6-8K USD a month but works only for half a year, but he is not in it for the money. He says they sometimes have to face pirates as often as several times a day, particularly when travelling along the Saudi Peninsula and African shores. The skifs make it out as far as 400km into the ocean which makes no place safe. Typically they would wait until the combatants come REALLY close to the ship and open fire with intent to kill. No questions, no warning shots, they just decimate them with whatever they have available, which is typically large-caliber machine guns and sniper rifles. The military ships assigned to defend the waters are never there on time. It just doesnt work that way. The frustration seen in the UK soldiers depicted in this documentary is very real. Although you may think: "What the fuck, why dont they take the pirates out and free the hostages... all that firepower and taxpayer dollars wasted" Its never like that. The expected casualty rate is 100% for the crew if a pirated ship is assaulted by marines. Those firehoses and whatnot do fuckall as a deterrent. Pirates will sometimes fire rockets at oil tankers if they become frustrated, you can only imagine what that can result in. Oil+RPG=big bada boom. One thing you have to understand is that these pirates, they have absolutely nothing to lose. More often than not they are forced to do this, their familyused as leverage - you dont do this for us, we kill your family. They often have no choice. One time, he says, they were attacked by 3 skifs in plane view of a US warship. The pirates were all killed but this just shows you the desperation of these poor fucking people. This is so incredibly sad, more than anything.
@Al Barbarī I'm sorry to hear this, but if the problem are the ships that fish your food out of your own water why do you attack all cargo ships?
@Al Barbarī Well again I'm really sorry for this, I too hate the imperialistic nature of the western world, I live here and I hate it, I see it everyday and I know that they are actually the source of those conflicts in one way or another for most of the time, so I deeply apologize for this and I wish I could do more than that if I had the power too. Stay safe!
36:13
Ross: How frustrating is that then?
Pilot: Fvcking frustrating!
Ross: Yeah, Roger that.
Least they want it. Fuck pirates
I’d be pissed imagine calling for help and having to watch it fly away
My opinion is honestly just to put armed security on the ships or have ships gather for example in groups before they reach the area where pirates raid and have a navy ship escort them. If they say about 60 ships pass each day I think that is somewhat possible to do. It's better to wait an hour more or so and pass safely than have the entire crew as a hostage who knows whether they'll even get back ever from Somalia.
Just wait till they accidentally attempt to raid a warship 😂😂😂😂

Yeah because they'd destroy the vessel that's being attacked duh
Yeah, seems like a huge waste of money. They're there to fight pirates and yet they can't actually do anything. Might as well have "No pirating" signs floating around since they'd be just as effective.
They can’t attack it. It would result in the death of possibly all hostages, too many casualties, and maybe even the destruction of the ship. Once the Ship is 100% taken over, there’s nothing you can do about it.
Erin Biggers you can’t attack a ship controlled by pirates if the crew is being held hostage
@@davidmiles They can't board hijacked ships because every single hostage would have their head lobbed clean off, also do you know why you think its ineffective? Because you only hear about it when they fuck up, not when they succeed.
"I've got a family to feed too, but I don't go round pointing guns at people........well I do!"
The ship at 7:03 looks a lot like the Maersk Alabama, the vessel that was hijacked only a few months later. So it's an accurate assessment by the captain, the freeboard was indeed low enough.
Yeah yeah "chasing Tuna" requires you to signal a cargo ship to slow down, since tuna hunt cargo ships.
Khobotov waves generated from cargo ships propelling toward opposite vector can cause nearby fishes to scuttle off. Common practice for fisherman to request big ships to recharter their course to prevent them from intervening with fishing within an area. Know your facts before you share your thoughts.

I saw another video where a war ship did catch the pirates but said they could not prove they were
pirates, so gave them food and drinks and probably a hug and let them go. The captain of the freighter
was very upset about it and said the navy ships were useless and did not help them.
Hms crew:
Pirated vessel:
Ross Kemp: that’s got to be the best pirate I’ve ever seen...
so what's the point if they won't engage?!?
UK bureaucracy is insane! 3 levels of permission vs having discretion at the commanders level.
That's exactly what I was thinking! We are so soft, just board the bloody thing. It's not like the Pirates are going to complain the to EU!

@wantafanta01 No, big fishing companies fish illegally outside the coast of most of these countries (and offshore illegal gold and oil refining). Destroying the only way to feed families and make money in the region, the countries governments are to weak to stand up against multi-billion dollar industries from china and the west, that forces people to desperate things like piracy.....Local crime lords then sees this and recruit those people to attack more "lucrative" ships for ransom and valuable materials.......So we get off clean....because our way of piracy are the right way....The pirates should learn the right way and start a " Sea-way pass/toll collecting company"......

What about making some kind of affiliate arrangement with the local fishermen where, in exchange for their ships being tagged and remotely surveilled, they are paid some weekly stipend?

hyou zan ren. Easy, money, it’s always about the money 💴💴💴💴💴💴💴💴💴💴
The pirates themselves are often very poor. They’re normally funded by warlords who pocket most of the money from piracy
7:31 can someone explain what he means by "if we start taking down vessels" ?
okay, 1 mothership and 3 (or more) speedboats closing in, demanding the vessel to slow down and just because they turn around when helos close in, both navies be like "nah, it will be fine"?
Yeah, I'm confused. The damn boat told them to slow down! That's not something fishermen do.
@@Ben.N maybe ONE fisherboat. Could be an emergency. But this?
And the fact that they said that they were fishermen 🤯. The problem is that there are only a few military vessels in that area, while merchant ships number the hundreds if not the thousands.
Btw, the Saldanha ship was brought back after paying 1.9 million USD, then a German ship was pirated. The foreign naval presence needs to be higher, or else ships will keep being hijacked

You such extraordinary Reporter Mr. Ross Kemp, Its Absolutely rare to duplicated!!
jeez I was looking for your channel for a few months now. couldn't find it for the life of me 😅
These anti-piracy patrols have to be so frustrating.
