Having visited Bulgaria for many years I can say the pickpocketing was an issue before they started doing it in the UK. Keeping in mind that many of the thieves are poor and struggling to survive, the parents would often train the children to panhandle and pickpocket. I remember one child begging and my grandfather gave him a bag of fruit, which the boy immediately thanked him for and ran off to his mother, who was lurking in a shrubby park area. She took the bag from him, slapped him, and sent him back to beg for more. That was in the mid 90s. Another year a boy cut open my grandmother's bag and tried to steal her purse...a lady working at a nearby stall beat him off with a fly swatter.
Crime is crime, but this is sad.

As a tourist from Israel in Rome many years ago I was surrounded by a friendly group of young bustling Gypsy kids at a rail station who acted like they were just welcoming a foreign tourist and eager to speak English.
Suddenly I felt a slight tug on the Camera hanging from my wrist so I spun around and shouted.
I heard a whistle, the group dispersed like a flash and later I noticed the group standing around an adult who must have been the organizer.
As I walked away I felt a tug on my shirt sleeve and thought it was another attempt to steal.
However I saw a young girl smiling at me, holding out her hand and I thought she wanted money .....but then I saw she was holding a bunch of Israeli Bank Notes.
Without my feeling anything at the time one of them had managed to lift them from my pants pocket and she was sent to return them to me as they apparently had no value to them.
Fortunately before I arrived at the rail station I had moved my much in demand Australian Passport from my top shirt pocket to an inner one which probably 'saved my bacon'.

True, you forgot also the gypsies blaming the other gypsies. I think another main point was, though, the extent to which the Bulgarian mafia has spread and how they do make use of a specific population. The fact that those members who are behind organizing the trafficking have very narrow connection to the ruling elite in Bulgaria is what is most disturbing to me.

They (the government) couldn't sue him for all the shit he does (forcing prostution, women trafficiking, drugs dealing, smuggling cigarettes and alchohol, pick pocketing, racketeering, beating, and giving orders for murdering someone from opposite clan), because he paid them. Like if you accept the money - you get a nice house somewhere, if you don't - you die in an unknown accident. Also he went for politics immunity the moment there was a danger of court. So after his ummunity ended, they got him for the dog charges.

The Roma of Europe have kept themselves aloof from the Mainstream, choosing to follow a more Tribal model. Well and good. But then I hear complaints that they must follow criminal enterprises in order to survive. Roma males expect their women to support them but eschew Education which would provide a foundation to better employment opportunities. In short what I see is a sort of Societal Self-sabotaging behavior propagated on the Roma by their own people. It is hard to have sympathy for people who are doing this to themselves. Just sayin......

God bless him and his work! If corruption is not exposed we can't even begin to have people care enough to create change. It's just funny how all the issues he covers have an underlying theme of money and greed breeding cultures of corruption. Old as the the ancient oral storytelling traditions teaching us about the importance of morals and yet humans are still making the same bad decisions. How can we plant seeds in such toxic soil and expect good fruit to grow. And the US is spending over 100 Billion Dollars on military (more toxic soil) and 400 Billion worth of sucking oil into the poorest lives and environments so the greedy can line their pockets with marble and granite. In the US we strip away your freedom if you don't bleed enough money from your existence. Then we wonder why we have to go to war and fight against the poorest peoples' idea that we are infidels. Sorry for the cynicism but it seems there are way to many of us too busy trying to survive to even care but for everyone out there still caring God bless you for hauling the burdens of the evil in us all. I am always moved by Mr. Kemp and his reflections on our moral shortcomings and how always exposes good in the journey to uncover evil. Peace be with you all.

We also have tens of thousands of low wage workers displacing our own working class all the while enjoying welfare benefits from day one.

People who have no control over their own circumstances and no access to the means to change or better their situation cannot be blamed for resorting to whatever they can to feed their families. The circumstances into which they have been forced makes them prime targets for the criminal bosses - who are NOT Gypsy!
