    The Carcharodons, also known as the Carcharodons Astra in High Gothic and sometimes as the "Space Sharks" in Low Gothic, is a Loyalist Space Marine Chapter of an unknown Founding, though it has been alleged to be either an ancient Chapter born as early as the Second Founding, or a relatively new Chapter raised during the 23rd Founding.

      Dragons are cooler than sharks simple as that. Also it’s made of fire. If the space sharks did something similar like use whatever fluid was available, maybe that’s why they want to spill and spread so much blood, and phychicly manipulate that liquid into a shark, that would essentially jump 10 levels of cool in my book. Else it feels a little tacked on, more like an idea someone slapped onto them to keep the shark theme going and not something that looks like it would’ve developed in universe through the chapters culture and values.

    • @TheDubDisciple
      @TheDubDisciple 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      More like the fact they took slaves. Given Corax was himself enslaved he didn’t mesh well with the battalion of Raven Guard in the Great Crusade that did so
      There’s a large group of ppl that believe it’s this battalion of Raven Guard that Corax sent out during the Great Crusade but refused to recall even during the Heresy that eventually grew into the Carcaradons. Potentially splintering into them and the Ashen Claws chapter another renegade Raven Guard chapter they maintain ties with despite them renouncing the Imperium entirely. That’s very weird for a super loyal chapter like the Space Sharks

    When the Carcharodons entered the Badab war, the first thing they did was attacking the Mantis Warriors chapter in the Endymion cluster. Needless to say they didn’t take many precautions against damaging infrastructure, plundering the various planets’ mineral resources as they hunted down the Mantis Warriors to near extinction. They even Launched a massive drop pod assault on Endymion Prime itself, ignoring the directions of the loyalist forces holding out on the battlefield and turning the entire planet into a war zone. By the end of the campaign the Carcharodons ruined at least a dozen inhabited planets. Millions were left rotting unburied or starving and the Mantis Warriors were no longer an effective fighting force. The conduct of the Space Sharks was so brutal that other more honorable loyalist chapters (fire angels) got angry and withdrew from the war.

    I believe the Carcharodons were bound to the fringes of the galaxy due to them being on a Penace Crusade for some past failures or some unworhtiness deemed by the High Lords of Terra and not just sus sharks in murky waters. Either way I wish they got some more models or at least an upgrade sprue other just their Shade Lord. However, this just shows to the creativity of the fans as I have seen some amazing conversions and tribal paint schemes for this chapter!
    On another note: that was a 'Primed Reach' by Bricky and I am loving the Warframe references by DK. I'm surprised we haven't heard a Soon'TM for any upcoming Tyranid models lmao

    • @nullakjg767

      @@orcbrand Yes, and they are bound to the rules of exile. Which means they can only recruit from penal colonies or people considered not "right-holding civilians" of the imperium. So while it seems like they just show up to a planet to have a red tide, they are actually law abiding. (and its suspected under these specific rules of exile that they acquired a large amount of nightlord geneseed)

  • @Meuduso1
    @Meuduso1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I support the theory that the Carcharadons are mutated Alpha Legion successors, mostly based on Tyberos being who he is.
    Tyberos being such a huge marine would fit the Alpha Legion "geneflaw" with some of their marines being extraordinarily big and looking like their Primarch but now after thousands of years and geneseed deterioration they don't look like their Primarch anymore and have instead developed these new sharky traits.
    If they were around long enough to have been around when Big E was still alive, meaning they were part of the Second Founding when Legions first split up into the 1000 marine chapters and it would be very weird for a second founding chapter to go missing or be unkown if it came from one of the loyalist Legions because this was still in the time when the Imperium kinda had it together organisational wise, with the Primarchs still being around. The Second Founding chapters are generally some of the most famous successors as well so it would be weird for the loyalist chapters to just forget one of their first successors like that. That pushes me more towards them coming from a traitor Legion in general but then again
    They were around since the Emperor ran around but always shunned to a degree, maybe because they came from that traitor legion, and have been stalking the edge of the galaxy since. This time has made them branch away from the "Teleports behind you, nothing personal kid" bs of the Great Crusade era Alpha Legion and had them develop their own style of fighting, maybe deliberately to get others thinking that they are Raven Guard or maybe even Night Lords successors.
    Still though some traits of their parent Legion remained, always popping up out of nowhere or Tyberos being one of the marines to grow to the height of a Primarch.
    Now that all being said, I could see another reason why Tyberos is that big. The Carcharadons salvaging geneseed might've led to them accidentally picking up some Alpha Legion geneseed along the way and fusing it into their previous one, thus making Tyberos the huge mf he is. Why only Tyberos is that big is the same reason as to why only some Marines of the Alpha Legion became that big, it's not every single marine that looks like their Primarch and is that tall, it's a few of them. Downsized to 1000 marines of a chapter and that chance sinks, along with whatever the hell goes on at the edge of the galaxy.

    They have the same flagship as the raven guard terrans that were sent off for being too brutal when corax took over. They use the same title for chapter master as those exiles, the only chapter to use that title. They have black hair and alabaster skin. They use stealth and terror tactics (the raven guard were just night lords but yanno not tactically shit and not led by a broken lunatic) etc.

    Fun fact: The main theory now a days is that the Gene Seed of the Carcharodons is Chimeric, so it can come from a number of sources and all can be correct.
    Also go read the Carcharodon books, they're very good and it's hilarious to see the Night Lords kinda scared.

  • @WarbossFitz
    @WarbossFitz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If i remember right the origins of the sharks is when the crusade found corax and he was reunited with his legion, he didnt like the terran raven guard. They just didnt click.
    So after a while of him recruiting marines from nocturne and the losses over time of the terran raven guard, he sent the originals out to guard the rim against anything that would hit the flanks of the crusade. Then over the 10,000 years of never coming back they had some genetic drift.
    Over time the raven guard identity got lost and they started seeing themselves as predators of the outer darkness protecting from outside threats. The sharks weren't born they just evolved into what they are now.

    There are 6 books/shorts featuring the Carcharadon Astra!
    They are, in chronological order:
    The Judges, In Their Hunger (standalone vs Emps Children)
    The Reaping Time (short prequel to Red Tithe)
    The Red Tithe (vs Night Lords on a prison planet)
    Death Warrant ( short sharks + rogue trader vs Necrons)
    The Outer Dark (ALL THE SHARKS VS A HIVE FLEET)
    Silent Hunters (Worst book about a squad questing for a Space McGuffin guided by young Tom Moon from The Stand.)
    Outer Dark is the best one by far and gives the most info about the chapter.

    Their opinions are pretty much the same as mine. They go a little too hard into the shark part, and the conversions mirror that by adding dorsal fins everywhere. But they are too much fun to not love. I’m starting a space shark army, and I’m going more into the Polynesian and thrown together armor aesthetic as opposed to the sharky one. Also, yea, they really need to make the space shark books as audio books.

    A cool story from the Badab War that they didn't mention is The Corcyran Massacre.
    Brothers of the Carcharodons and the Executioners battled each other to mutual annihilation, to the point where neither chapter has acknowledged any survivors. A Loyalist naval patrol later discovered the site of the conflict, which was wrecked with gore and evidence that warriors of both sides fought to their very last breaths.

    Proof they are Nightlords:
    1) They knew the Emperor when he was flesh, only Chapters that existed DURING the Great Crusade can claim this.
    2)They were on a penitent crusader that lasted long enough for memory of them to be wiped away from the weakened Imperium.
    3)They get their recruits from Prisons like the original NightLords.

    I'm probably a little late commenting this, but personally whenever I hear "Their origins are unknown and they may be of loyalist or traitor stock" I ALWAYS just assume it's the latter. While the imperium loves to lose documents, there are documents and records dating quite far back to multiple founding chapters. Even if it wasn't a widely known fact, the fact that Space Marines frequently laud their parentage mens that they at least have an idea if not outright know.
    The fact that no one knows AND those space marines do not proudly display their heritage suggests that they probably have good reason not to. It's that much of an outlier. Like one of those "Well I wasn't thinking about it until you said something" deals. The fact that even they don't know or won't tell is strange enough that it suggests there's something there.
