The instrument is Sarangi. Which is fantastic with vocal classical music. It almost speaks to you. What she is singing is called Thumri . This is semi- classical music. She was appreciating his playing. She told him well done. This is very common in classical music . They appreciate each other during the performance. What you are hearing is at Darbar Festival from 7 years ago. She is based in UK ( born there) and has a 3 Octave range. Her name is Nina Virdee ( Burmi). She is from Kirana Gharana. ( school of music) North Indian. Each singer has their school , their teachers school, whom they learn from. Each school has a distinctive style. Her debut performance was in 1995 in Mumbai.

You might also like Pandit Ravi Shankar in Monterey Bay.. In the 1970s. Fantastic tabla and sitar "jugalbandi" duo performance. It's my favorite.

This darbar festival happens in London from September to November. You guys are close by. You should check it out next time. Indian classical music performances are never rehearsed they are always on the spot. The singers and musician all practice their art on their own. Mostly they just meet half an hour before the performance backstage. Some have performed together before some they are meeting for the first time. They just follow a set of rules of the raga that they are going to perform and that’s it. She was not at all annoyed with the musicians, in fact she was appreciative of them and kept telling them they were playing amazingly and directing them to go faster or slower by some of her hand gestures. This is the norm in Indian classical music. This way no two performances are exactly the same and each performance is unique

No every time she's looking at them, she's acknowledging their accuracy of notes.

  • @TrustifierTubes
    @TrustifierTubes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

when she said "ah ha ha" at 4:06 ... she's appreciating the sarangi (string instrument) player's accuracy. She couldn't help acknowledge his accuracy just like you noticed.

She first started to increase the pace and beats per cycle and the Tabla followed, and paused to leave a bit of time for the Tabla player to have a small solo. after which She instructed the Sarangi player and the Tabla player to begin again along with her. In Indian classical music, the singer is the commander of the concert, it's their job to direct the cycle and time and beat when they see fit, especially in improvisation.

the whole section from 5:19 to 6:11 is unbelievable but 5:57 in particular, man... that's a really complex movement that she pulled off so gracefully, getting the notes is one part, but committing to ornamenting them in syncopation like that is something else. And the Sarangi player just mirrored it like nothing lol, love when a singer and instrumentalist get synced so well.

  • @dharmverma7595

The string instrument being played here is called Sarangi. It has three main cut get strings and about 37 to 41 . Each of these strings sre tuned to the notes of octavrs played on three main strins. Therefore each time a note is played on one of the main strings a sympathetic metal string resonates, mimicking human voice. The working of this instrument shows how deep a knowledge of physics of sound peoples of India had hundreds of years ago.

Sarengi is the one of the most traditional Indian instrument in India. It has the three main srings & 32 - 35 strings to cooperative with singers mainly clasical singers. And it's very difficult to play. Thanks for react on that song. She is one of my favourite. Lots of love from India.

The melodic framework is mishra bhairavi, which has a scale like a western minor scale with a diminished second a semitone from the tonic, with added 'foreign' notes. The rhythmic framework is teen-taal, or a 16-beat cycle. The accompanying bowed instrument is the sarangi with 3 playing strings and numerous sympathetic resonance strings.
You were clearly appreciative of the emotion and technique in her music.

    Memories hurt
    Day and night,
    O dear one.....
    Without your presence
    Ease/relief dosen't occur(to me)
    Sadness peeps
    Now from the mirror
Solitude blooms in the form of flower and showers(upon me/him/her).......
The loved one couldn't get to meet his/her dearest one
    Memories hurt
    Day and night
    O dearest one.....
    Without your presence
    Ease/Relief dosen't occur..................................
NOTE: The drums are called TABLA
The violin like instrument is SAARANGI
The long guitar like instrument is SITAAR

The performance is generally not scripted. It follows a Raaga which is a combination of notes with some rules on how to pay them. The supporting artists are following her performance note by note, which gives the lag.

I really like your reactions to Indian classical music! It's super interesting to see your perspectives on it... would love to see you guys react to the amazing sitarist Niladri Kumar explaining 'What is a Raga' and 'What is upaj' (upaj = improvisation in classical indian music). He actually explains his perspective while giving examples on the sitar, I found the videos really interesting. Both are filmed by darbar festival, which is a festival for indian classical music, I believe held annually. I also really enjoy Niladri Kumar's 'Raag Bhairavi' and 'Raag Shri' darbar videos as well as some of the fancams with Ustad Zakir Hussain. :)

Her last recording was done when she was 90 years old. She started her singing career in the year 1942. Mentioned below link is from the same concert. She is a living legend. No doubt about it.
