    I've been working Canadian oil field for 20+yrs and have worked for companies that ran Dodge, others that ran Chevy and Ford. All were treated the same way...driven hard and abused for 60 to 80K per year. There's only one reason I've got a Super Duty in my driveway...they lasted while the others failed miserably end of story!

    When it all comes down to it you have to drive each one to its max to see the greatest potential each truck has. I drive a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD with the 6.6L Durmax Diesel and the 6 speed Alliston Trans. Let me tell you i have compared all 3 trucks myself pulling a 40 foot flatbed gooseneck trailer with 40,000 lbs total gvwr and over the long haul Chevy by far out does any other truck. In my opnion its ability to haul that much weight daily is unmatched by anyother.

    I own a 2012 3500 duramax, it's got 170,000kl on it now and it still pulls like the day I got it new! just did the brakes and it didn't really need it but I wanted to service them and only replaced the front pads, this truck is almost maintenance free! Change the oil add a little def and use it! NO OTHER ISSUES YET ! I pull alot of trailers and the engine brake is great, just love my GMC

      The gear ratios in the rear axle make a big difference In towing, I bet it wasn’t the same ratio in the 3 trucks!

  • @jimnull4410
    @jimnull4410 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I haul rock the same way that the test was done. I run a 2001 Dodge with a V10 and automatic, and consistently load 6 tons of rock in the same kind of trailer. Sometimes, in a pinch, I have hauled 8 tons of 3/4-0 and still got the job done. The road out of the pit was 10% to 12% grade on gravel. Towing on the road feels creepy and you need to drive like your driving on ice. The truck I used for the job was ligh and uncharistic for the task but I still got the job done. Before I give you my opinion I want you to know I also have over 30 years truck driving experience in everything from log trucks to mixers to multiple trailer heavy haul.
    Here's my opinion; (granted, it's just an opinion). I believe the Ram has the best drive train. 6 cylinder diesels in my opinion provide the best low end torque. 6 cylinder diesels usually help you turn the wheels slowly with the highest level of torque, which generally equates to better starting traction and control and drivetrain protection if the truck is driven properly. This is one reason why there are almost no new American big rigs with 2 stroke V8 diesels any more. The big V8's were really fast on the road but if you hit ice and snow or dirt or mud and we're under heavy load the engine and the wheels would spin too quickly which could cause loss of traction, sometimes resulting in damaged or broken components like axles, trannies and driveshafts etc. Also the noise that V8 diesels produced were another reason why they are not generally used. The noise was also a health hazard. Today Manufacturers employ specially designed injectors and sequential fuel injection to lessen the noise of primary diesel ignition.
    If you pull off road in rock, sand, mud or on really steep "marbly" ground the Ram is the best choice I think. If the work you do is on road and you pull say a large 5th wheel travel trailer or a heavy toy hauler I would choose the Chevy because it steers well and has awesome dynamic braking from the Allison transmisson. The Duramax diesel, though really complex has lots of power and is most charistically like gasoline engine performance. I believe the Ford however has the best cab and chassis. Nobody can dispute the ruggedness and reliability of the twin "I" beam and coil or leaf sprung front suspension that Ford has built for over half a century. Ford also manufactures it's own diesel engine, (It pulls like an old Detroit so be prepared to keep your toes in the turbo when workin' hard on the blacktop), also the Ford front seats are second to none.
    So here's my opinion: if you're logging, mining or farming get the Ford or the Dodge Ram. For recreational towing on the road or if there are long distances between your job sites get the Ford or the Chevrolet. Finally, pickups have been in American culture since the buck - board wagon. I believe Americans build the best all around trucks in the world of any size. Europeans and Asians have been playing catch up to American truck deaign and manufacture for more than 50 years. No matter which the three trucks you choose you'll certainly have the best in the world.

    • @bigharryyy03
      @bigharryyy03 ปีที่แล้ว

      That seems in line with the golden rule for big diesel pickups:
      -If you want a truck that rides like a car and don’t plan to use it as a serious work vehicle, get a Chevy.
      -If you want a truck that’s a little more capable that does both real work and recreation, and don’t mind a slightly tougher ride, get a Ford.
      -If you want a truck that can carry two pallets of bricks in the bed and don’t mind a rough ride when it’s empty, get a Dodge.

    As a retired truck driver, all I can say is that I wish Caterpillar never had pulled the plug on it's road engines. I wish they could have brought something to the table when Dodge got the Cummins.
    But back then, GM had Detroit Diesel and Allison. It would have been a conflict of interest. I remember two Petes that were equipped with 8v71s and 5&2s. Those were a blast to drive. Something about those roots blowers. Sounds like your drivin' a wound-up raped ape top fuel dragster all day long.
    CATs are luggers with a passion, Cummins have to run around 2k or else, they get hot when you lug 'em.
    By the way, you don't really need all that power to move that much weight.
    With low gearing and a lot of gears, you can move a lot of weight with less than 200hp. Sure, you won't be Mario Andretti but the load will get to it's destination.
    It's all in the gearing.
    A well designed frame can be lightweight and flexible. Heavy duty solid axles such
    as the Dana 60 and 80 can put up with a lot of abuse.
    I've got a 21 year old Chevy C1500 with a short-bed with the V6, 5 spd and 3:42 axle.
    Bought it new in Dec. '93 By no means a competitor with the trucks in this comparison test, which isn't saying much, but it's had 2000lbs in the bed and can move a whole machine shop. I know because I've done this. Takes a little extra time, and few extra trips, but it can be done.
    I get about 22 mpg.
    For the most part, it's been a faithful truck.

    To each their own, gentlemen. Mine is the ford king ranch diesel. Everything feels just right when I'm towing the 12k lb camper, uphill and down. The roomy and super comfortable interior really makes a difference on the long adventures, and that's what they've overlooked in their tests. A truck is not just for working around town. If you're the adventure type, make it a FORD.

    • @dedalliance1
      @dedalliance1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, they needed to put a GMC up there. General Motors runs their company different, they have different name brands for different products that they make. For example if you want pure luxury you get a Caddy, if you want a Luxury work truck / SUV you get GMC, If you want a nice but simple of any of the 3, be it a car, truck, Suv, then you get a Chevy. But for like Ford you can get just whatever package you want and it still has a ford logo on it. It's just General Motors compartmentalizes their packages into different name brands.

    test these trucks for 250k miles loaded with 12000lbs day in day out, up and down hills, extreme cold and heat then tell me which one should be "king of the hill." Honestly im not biased towards any of them, i love the big 3 and they all have there pros and cons and they all do better in one category than the other. I think they could all learn something from each other in designing and engineering their trucks. Dodges biggest downfall is the computer programming for the engine and transmission (imho) in there vehicles, gas or diesel.

    I don't own a diesel truck personally because i have no need for one, for any towing i do a 1/2 ton does just fine. I have a Chev simply because it was the one i liked most when test driving. As far as the diesel trucks go, i work in a shop that does work for a lot of fleets, most of them run Ford F450s and F550s mostly, but most of them own Chevs and Dodges as well. The Fords are in the shop constantly for a variety of issues, where as the Chevs and Dodges are usually only seen at the shop for regular maintenance and brakes from time to time. Now a lot of the companies i've noticed their new trucks are mostly Dodges, Chevs, or those Mercedes Sprinter things, which are worst than the Fords.

    I've owned 4 GM's, and 2 Ford's.
    Every single GM needed Significant Repairs (Major Suspension work, Electronic failures, Water Pumps (yes, plural) Alternators (yes, plural) and One Complete Rear End failure) totaling an Average of $3,500 each at between 90-110k miles. At 200-250k miles, they were Done. Not worth sinking the money into any more.
    Both Ford's are still on the road, and haven't needed anything I would consider Significant, albeit they did need Some repairs (2 Alternator, 2 Water Pump, Belt Tensioner, 3 Wheel Bearings). One has 262k and one has 356k with the latter needing the transmission replaced at around 210k.. THE most reliable vehicles I've ever bought. I wouldn't hesitate to (and do) drive the 262k one on long trips.. The 356k one is relegated to local use, as probably any vehicle over 300k would be, if the owner was smart (or at least get roadside assistance).
    All were properly maintained, and not abused.
    Never again, am I Ever buying a GM Product.

    Ive driven all 3, and honestly its a tie between all for me. The cummins has that rumble I love, and you can feel the whole truck shaking from it and was torque-ey I guess. The ford felt the most powerful and was roomy but I hated how quiet it was, it felt like I was driving a gas truck and it felt wrong, and im not a big fan of powerstroke because of their bad rep. The chevy rode the best and handled well, and was just fun to drive. Im getting a truck soon and I cant decide because theyre all great trucks. Im sure ill be happy with whatever I choose.

The knocking noise because at 60,000 miles or so the phasers start knocking. Another $2,500 plus job... I'm going with Chevy on my next purchase, and I will be warning my friends about the problems. Ford seems to deny any issues, but paid out millions in suit. They only want to pay me $1,200 for a $2,500 service job to remove the heads to get to spark plugs. If it would have went to a dealer it would have costed $4,000 plus. Ford get your shit together you lost one customer...

    Never said it was, I was questioning why it says they use pushrod when I thought I was sure they didn't. Ford have been using DOHC for a while, hence why the other trucks are gruff and the F series is quiet and refined.

    Dodge: cummins engine proven to be reliable, transmission will need to be replaced over time depending on what you tow and when you tow are you heavy on the fuel pedal,DO NOT chip the cummins with the factory transmission
    Ford: has a terrible history, the all new truck yet to be proven.
    Chev/GMC: the duramax has been proven to me over time to be reliable and the allison transmission is also reliable
    I used to be a ford guy through and through now my shadow will never darken the door of a ford dealership I own the 2008 dodge 3500 cummins mega cab 4x4 single wheel and really like the looks over the other two i use it for pulling a mini excavator with a 30 foot goose neck trailer from day one, at 213 000 km I had to put in a new transmission, this was no big deal to me as I was put through the ringer with a 2004 f350, anyhow at the dealership they had a transmission in their parts room for the dodge, in a small town, so this tells me that its a common thing for tranny's to eat their pigs alot, so at 213 000km's all i needed was to replace the transmission no big deal, I like my dodge and am gonna use it for as long as I can pulling 16000lbs , with witnessing other people in the the dirt moving industry the chev/Gmc seem to be the most reliable truck so next truck i get is gonna have the duramax teamed up this allison!!

I change the oil every 3-5k depending on the amount of freeway driving. as far as reliability goes....cummins 1st duramax 2nd (we have an 03 with 250k on it and has had only a few repairs) and the powerstroke dead asss last!

      Apple is far from the best computer. And your analogy in comparing a windows based PC to a Apple product is like comparing a Honda ridgeline too a F250 two completely different things built for two different purposes. Now you buy a medium duty truck in which the big three variants are direct competitors trades along with residential consumers buy Fords and they do so for a reason (reliability) even though 9 times outta 10 the Ford costs more which go figure.

    • @clarkpetrick127
      @clarkpetrick127 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      As for comparing mac vs windows it's not hard especially considering gm does quite few things differently than ford. 1 a fully independent front suspension ford uses a solid front axle the weight capacity of these axles are almost identical withing 50 pounds 9350 for ford 9300 for gm. 2nd gm has a auto locking rear differential ford has a manual locking rear diff. Once you need to bad your stuck or you have already slipped.
      If you want even the engines ford is using superchargers that are constantly having issues on the Ecco boost line. Now they are added a 2.7 Ecco boost and dropping the 6.2L. Last time I checked I wanted to power to do things with a truck that's why I have a truck. So no I don't think it's that hard to compare the two.
      If you really want to go windows to windows. Then gm is asus the best built computers period. Acer is ford yes they sell the most but go to them with an issue and they tell you to pound sand.

    • @The2001cobra
      @The2001cobra 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Clark Petrick
      First off Ford has far better customer satisfaction than GM. Lawsuits lead to recalls and recalls are evidence of poor satisfaction! Recalls are implemented because customers sue the company ( which lead to a class action) then the supreme court gets involved to protect customers from poor problem resolutions like GM and Toyota have. GM is recalling an endless amount right now by the time its over with itll be 10+mil in one shot.
      Secondly Ford uses turbochargers on the ecoboost motors not superchargers. This simply shows how ahead Ford is of GM in the engine department. BMW, Volvo and Ford along with others are ahead of the game as this is the way the US market is going smaller turboed engines. Hell GM has to rely on Daewoo for its turbo motors. Ford isn't having constant issues with the ecoboosts they have them in everything from a 1.0L i3 in the fiesta to the 3.5L in the expedition. You want engine problems look no further than yours truly the 5.3L or for that matter any vortec motor.
      Thirdly, it really is hard to compare the two because that little 2.7L will more than likely make 320 hp and 370 tq in which all the tq will come in under 2500 rpm. While the next 3.5L eco will now make 380hp and 460 tq with the same low diesel tq curve. Ford will also still use the 5.0l with revised hp and an all new NA 3.5L v-6 with all the goodies. Gm has what a 4.3 with 285 hp and 305 tq at 3900 rpm a 5.3l with 355 hp and 383 tq at 4100 rpm and a 6.2l with 420hp and 460 tq at 4100 rpm. Yes your right Fords little turbo powered motors are an unfair comparison in GM's high RPM tq building v-8's. That 3.5L eco will pull better than the Ford 6.2L or GM 6.2l for 1 simple fact all 460 tq is available at 2500 rpm not 4100 rpm like the NA 6.2Ls. Hell would I like a twin turbo 6.2L hell yeah it would make 800tq at 2500 rpm but it wouldn't be fuel efficient. Ford instead just dropped 700lbs off the new all aluminum f150 those little motors are going to get 22+ city and nearly 30 highway now all with diesel tq with cheaper gas pricing.
      Fourthly, Ill take a solid axle on a HD series truck any day. If I wanted a car like ride Id buy the 7 lug f150. A solid axle is far more reliable and cost affective on a service vehicle than independent suspension. Front axle weight max on a 3500 chevy is 5200lbs while the Ford 350 is 5940lbs that 740lbs difference is huge for front mount applications. You ever hear of fords TSC with e-lockers its the same thing as auto engaging slip. Also, Ford still puts mechanical hub locks upfront GM well electronics go out and your shit outta luck. On the Ford something fails you can always get out and lock them.
      Finally, GM is what Ford was back in mid 2000's they are that far behind. They are just starting to bring in a transit connect competitor. They have no answer for the new transit or fords 5cyl powerstroke. GM is still using archaic pushrod motors and just starting to adopt the OHC design where Ford went overhead back in 95. Ford has more DI and VV and turbo motors in production than gm is developing. GM has these recalls that are tarnishing there image just as the publics forgotten about the bail out money. GM is in a very bad spot right now and the light is just getting smaller in the tunnel.

People please , these three brand trucks are "American" for atleast one more than the other. So stop fighting for which one is better, they are all good trucks. But lets see the reality here. If you see Chevrolet has a Made in America Auto Index Score of 70%, Dodge has a 63% and Guess what! for all you Ford hating people , ford has a Made in America Auto Index Score of 87.5% the other percent is parts that are imported or fabricated else where. So that been said and like it has Ford has been America's best selling vehicle and still is.
    (Not to mention FORD came out way before these other motor companies, just in a different concept of producing.)

      +Efren Martinez The reality here is that Ford fans are incredibly immature and illogical. You could be at the races all year with dodge winning every race and they would still say Ford was better. They are as bad as gun controlling liberals with their illogical bent. In this case the Chevy truck just flat won out as a work vehicle and they didn't even get into the hideous bed flex that Fords have. I saw one test where ford actually damaged itself from bed flex. I grew up with Fords as well. My family always drove Ford stuff because it was cheap. No other reason. Cheap to buy, cheap to fix, and for the most part got the job done. True we did do a lot of fixing but that's the territory with older vehicles.

      Yeah I guess everyone has their opinions and looks on things my friend. I respect the other named brand of trucks, It doesn't mean I won't drive a Chevrolet or a dodge, I'll take a corvette over a mustang
      Any day. Yes ford might have a reputation of being cheaper since it was the first one to mass produce but it doesn't mean ford is cheap . It's just the way one sees things, you know. You can talk down all you want on ford or dodge for it being not reliable and "cheap" the ? Is did you take care of it did you maintain it? Ex) Its just like an ak 47 vs. an ar 15 they are both good rifles, many people will pick up the ak right of the bat because they heard that those weapons can withstand alot, and is true but to a certain point, ar 15s in the other hand get a bad look at and people think they are cheaper and jam alot, so again the question is did you maintain it? Yet I don't see how our government still uses this rifle for combat,lol. But back to the topic, Man I can't remember the Last time a 1500 selling more. Over a f150 or it being America's #1 selling truck for the past 30 years or so. I don't know man numbers show it. Just look at the ford f150 raptor it's first release date was 2010 the first of the three companies to offer an off road rtg package. Chevrolet just came up with a mimic of the raptor called the reaper. Lol I have to say it sucked! And I'll tell you cause I drove one. Ford is downsizing their engines in their light duty trucks, just wait and dodge an chevy are going to start doing the same thing.

      Efren Martinez I see your point but those of us that are mechanics define cheap both ways based on what we see in our shops a lot and base what we drive on our shop experiences also. Its more than just cost of course. It is also what is hard or easy to work on when you have to work on it.

      +Efren Martinez I own an F250 xlt 4x4, but components in the engine cost too much to fix in so little time of owning the truck. Like the spark plugs break off... $2,500 fix.

    I already knew how this would turn out. I don't care about gadgets or leather or squishy seats. I work my trucks thats why all of them are a 05, 07 and 2011 Duramax Dually. Haven't failed me yet and pass all the others on the highway! And the 07 is about 1/4 million miles and still going strong!

    Im a Ford fan boy but id kill to have any one of these in a dullie set up. American trucks are the way to go. Those tractor mirrors on the ram really grew on me as the video went on and it just looks bad ass man it looks the part of a big rig pick up.

    GM all the way from military H1, to suburban moving our president around the country, to the first vehicle to leave the earth, to GM making Feriaris suspension, to GM owning all the car shows classic and not, to GM motors used in most mods, GM will always be rule supreme over Ford any day!
