I'm autistic with irlen and dyscalculia. As a child, before my diagnoses, I was in a gifted program but struggled a lot. I thought it was because I was lazy. So glad that this is becoming more common to hear about. A friend mentioned it to me the other day and I told her I have irlen syndrome.

I live with both irlen syndrome and dyslexia, growing up I was called lazy and or stupid because I didn't read at the same level as my classmates. My Pop's had trouble reading and writing, he said it hurt his eyes and got headaches. I currently wear reading glasses with a prism lens so that I don't see the pages like one of Picasso's painting, I'll look into getting colored lenses as well. I've had a number of head injuries, one of those injuries I was unconscious for four days, the foster parent hit me with a maul handle and a few other things. I waited for karma to get her, suffer she did in the end, I didn't even go to her funeral.
Anyway if I get the colored lenses I won't have to carry overlay sheets with me everywhere.

Im so glad i can come on here and watch these videos and read all your comments. My 10 yr old son has struggled for YEARS and we thought dyslexia, which might still be happening, and the schools he was going to just pushed it off and tried holding him back. We've switched schools and we are 6 weeks in and thank goodness for teachers that want to better children. She noticed right away and asked the right questions and he will be tested next week. I'm so happy someone is on his side and not pushing him off to the side like in the past.

I was working as an instructional aid for a special needs high school student who had a class specifically for helping her with homework. One day, the teacher for that class brought in color overlays. I noticed something out of the corner of my eye, so I asked if I could try the smokey-blue overlay. Holy cow! The words stopped moving!!! It was pretty amazing. She let me have that one, but that was nearly 20 years ago. I've ordered a set of overlays now, for myself and possibly my niece. Hopefully, we're turn her into a reader yet.

I don't know if I have this or not because I can still read fairly well, but the words seem to move as if in a ripple effect and the spacing of words seem to expand and then get smaller..

An issue I have with this video is that it portrays Irlen syndrome as merely seeing blurry/moving letters while reading, and that it affects mainly children. That may turn away people who can't relate to that, but do otherwise show many other symptoms - sensitivity to light, issues with reading except the letters look normal, attention problems, unexplained fatigue especially during activities focused on visual perception, unexplained headaches/migraines, issues with depth perception and motor coordination, etc.
The issue with letters dancing/moving/being blurry is common in those with Irlen syndrome, but it's not a necessary symptom to qualify for a diagnosis. There are better resources on this online. Personally I don't experience any kind of visual distortions, but I was referred to testing due to my extreme sensitivity to light, issues with attention, unexplained migraines, and trouble reading but for the reason that it makes me tired and gives me headaches.
If you experience similar issues with no other explanation for it, or you do have a diagnosis that should explain it (ADHD, autism, learning disorders, etc as explained in the video) but your indicated treatment isn't helping you, it might be worth looking more deeply into this and possibly getting tested by a professional.

Irlen affects me in an unusual way. As I read, the letters seem to move off the the right (I always likened it to a marching band). If I read faster to catch the letters up, they speed up even more to the point where I am not taking in the meaning of the words anymore. Anyone else have this? Caused me massive problems when studying, until I started doing oral notes instead of written. At school I was beaten by teachers countless times for not doing homework (it was the 70's and beatings were not unusual).

Only recently learned about Irlen syndrome from Temple Granden, as my case (aspergers) is rather minor (just hits in all the right places to make things hard lol). Though I didn't know that there was a company targeting this with glasses particularly as Temple only mentioned using normal tinted glasses at stores like Walmart. I actually purchased computer glasses from Gunnars Optiks, and immediately the use of these glasses cleared up any shakiness or confusion of reading material for me.

I believe my son could benefit from this treatment because of the way he tilts his head back or to the side to look at things, rubbing of the head and eyes and many other things but just wondering how you would make this work for a child like him?

something I find very intresting is that I undoubedly have irlens. it just doesn't show on black and white paper/screens instead things with an orange tinted background and all the sudden the shades of words start differing in shade/color and the shading/coloring starts moving around when I switch focus on the next word.

I went for a dyslexia assessment and the assessor told me that I'm not dyslexic, but to look into Irlen Syndrome. I don't think I have this though, letters don't move for me or whatever, the text looks normal, but my problem is that I have to read slowly to take everything in and that my eyes move too fast and sometimes they go out of focus.

My aunt says she has this and I should get checked... I've had severe headaches all my life. Doctors could never figure out why... I mix up letters when reading... and bright light bothers me... I'm worried about the cost though, and also... wouldn't your brain just adjust to the color and take in more of the light that bothers you? (I'm not a scientist/doctoer... I don't understand how the brain works...) I just wonder because I used to swim a lot when I was a kid and I noticed that when I wore colored goggles for a long time that I wouldn't even notice the tent after a while... and when I took, say, blue goggles off the world would be red for a little bit till everything went back to normal...

Irlen Spectral Filter wearers receive a full diagnostic report from their Irlen Diagnostician that can be submitted to the school or workplace as required documentation to support the need of the assistive technology. Irlen Spectral Filters are not sunglasses, and if necessary, may be added to a child's 504 plan or IEP to ensure use in the school environment is not prevented.
