The reveal of the First Slayer is one of my favorite moments in the series. It reaches all the way back to "The Harvest" when Giles tells Willow and Xander "As long as there have been vampires there has been The Slayer"...and now it points the way forward.

the only dream sequence I've ever seen that actually feels like a dream.
with xander, that scene is not about embarrassment. it's more obvious on rewatch but throughout the series we have little moments that show how neglectful and abusive his family is. xander is a frustrating character mostly because he hasn't really grown, but these peeks into his home life do at least explain a lot of his character.

Restless is one of my favorite episodes, but it takes a few rewatches to appreciate. You also want to rewatch it after you progress further into the series. You will appreciate it. Give it time.

Also, do not do any research into this episode yet. You might be disappointed.

You need to rewatch this after season 5, there are so many little season 5 and beyond Easter eggs in this episode.

A lot of foreshadowing, and some cheese guy who I think represents the parts of some dreams that just make no sense at all. :)
One thing I noticed that actually seemed to be a callback to an earlier episode: when Joyce is looking out through the hole in the wall, that hole is basically the same size and ragged shape as a hole in a door (I think) that she was looking out through in School Hard, when Buffy was fighting Spike in the school on parent-teacher night!

I used to dislike this episode, but after watching the entire series and rewatching this episode multiple times, I've discovered incredible details and still am, 24 years later. It's something you won't fully grasp until after Season 6. While many people believe the foreshadowing mainly pertains to Season 5, there are actually significant elements related to Season 6 as well.
I recommend rewatching the episode a few times and taking notes on interesting quotes or confusing moments. After each new episode of Buffy, review your notes to see if anything becomes clearer. This isn't mandatory, just a suggestion I wish I had followed back then. 😂

You got some of what they were saying. As you said, you may want to watch it a couple more times now so more of it sticks. To echo others, a rewatch after season 5 and/or 6 and/or 7 could be fun. In (non-spoilery) summary:
    Not everything has meaning.
A lot of things do have meaning. A lot more than you’ll get after one watch. Or 3. Or (in my case) 20+; I’m still finding new things even in this rewatch.
Some of the things which have meaning reference things in the past/present; you mentioned some of them.

“What is this Finale!” I’d categorise the episode 20 and 21 two-parter as this season’s finale, and this episode as an epilogue. It’s definitely a more experimental structure than the first 3 seasons had.

The Greek writing Willow was doing on Tara's back was something by Sappho, the ancient Greek poet from the isle of Lesbos. She did lesbian love poetry I think...

      @sirmoonslosthismind 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

yeah, that's literally the origin of the words "sapphic" and "lesbian".

I know nothing about 'Death of a Salesman' but I don't think it features a cowboy.
Wiillow is painting Greek on Tara's back. I'm told it's actually lines from the poet Sappho, who was a woman who loved women and lived on the island 'Lesbos' Hence 'lesbian'.
Eating cheese before going to bed is supposed to give you nightmares (it's never had that effect on me). We know Buffy likes cheese, Willow told Riley that.

Clearly they are setting up the Cheese Guy as the big bad for season 5.

One of the best episodes ever. It ends perfectly the four first seasons. Now we are in the adult age and darker things. But this is foreshadowing too about next seasons

Many of the references in this episode are forward pointing, not backward pointing, so you can't really understand them (yet). If you were to study this episode in depth, you might recognize some parts in future episodes. But it's really hard, so you might not want to bother, it's not essential. If you ever rewatch the whole series, I believe you'll appreciate this episode more than you might do right now.
Some things you can draw from this episode is some insight into the main characters: E.g. Xander's basement scenes might point towards an abusive father?
Anyway, looking forward to your reaction to S5, which is my favorite (together with S3).

We could tell you so many things, and none of them would make any sense, so nener nener :P
Just gonna have to wait and see if any of this makes any sense about anything. Dreams are weird that way. Weird, I want some cheese...

Restless was a brilliant episode, but Series 4 I thought wasn't my favorite overall, but contained some brilliant individual episodes Hush, Something Blue, and Restless. Adam was the worst Big Bad throughout the whole show. This is however a very important episode with so many reveals for the closing seasons of the show. It definitely has a touch of 'Twin Peaks' about it. With regards the cheese, we have to remember in S2 Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, Buffy remembering she 'felt a sudden need for cheese' and when Riley asked Willow in The Initiative episode in early S4, Willow said to Riley 'she likes cheese', and when Riley is trying to awkwardly talk to Buffy at the party, he says to Buffy 'cheese'. I think you can see how this show has developed over the Seasons, it's almost impossible after watching S1 to think that an episode of this quality could lead on from that, but that is the beauty of this show. The flashbacks and crossover plots with S2 of Angel and S5 of BTVS are just amazing! Series 5 of BTVS is so much better overall with terrific story lines, and Enjoy S5!
