Hey Mike, never done any concrete work, but going to soon. Building an ICF house and detached garage. What I like about the video is how the step down is formed. I plan on using this technique on our garage slab. I'll use that step down technique for when we come back and start the walls with ICF blocks. Nice job!

I find that by having a service body trucks and we'll organized saves me many extra trips to my shop during the day. I would love to see how u organize your trucks!!
I do tarmacadam over here in Ireland but always wanted to try concrete for maybe a year or two. You've a top team working for you it's great to watch.. keep up the great work 👍
My crew and I have taken on a 15'x110', 2 guys and myself with a 20x20 off to the side we used a vibratory screed as well and a whirly bird to finish. I havent taken on anything quite this big as I havent had the opportunity. You guys did a beautiful job.

Excellent Video. Im going to sign up with you membership with in the week..For years I wanted to get into doing this. Going back to when I was 15 yros... I settled for the waste business last 24 years.. lol.. But I really want to learn the in and outs with this business. I poured about 6 slabs in my life 1-4 yards tops. I always seem to have an interest with this . Not sure why. just looking to get in this end of the business. We recycle concrete and haul it. So I think it would be cool to cover the whole end of it. Poured my first piece of concrete this last weekend after watching you're channel for a while. It went horrible! Just did a little practice ring around my firepit. Ultimately I think it came down to the concrete we used. Just the cheap hand mixed 60 lb bags from Menards. The bag says its only a 3" slump as speced and we had a hard time with it. We added too much water to try to be able to work it, and still ended up with massive pores when we removed the forms. Some spots had too much aggregate and too little sand, so we ended up with a pebbled surface. Didnt set like I got used to seeing in your videos where you could work the surface smooth with a trowel. We will definitely try again! Probably get better concrete, rent a mixer to get better mixing, and use the right amount of water. I bet readymix goes smoother. Still had a lot of fun. Will probably still hire a contractor for the floor on our upcoming housebuild but definitely want to make another attempt at patios and sidewalks.
Hi mike , I’m a union finisher from Philadelphia I’ve been doing it for 4 years We use viberscreeds when it calls . But most of the time magnesium screeds or 2x4 depending on what the job calls for. I enjoy your videos you guys do an excellent job !!👍🏻👍🏻 makes it a whole lot easier with some good rake guys with a good eye on them !!! I think I may start a TH-cam channel . Mike, small tip, just use the vibrascreed to set your wet pad in the center. Do your laser wet screeds at the length of your blade or even closer. Nice work . I've done those edges either way, and leaving them open is definitely the way to go
I'm a journeyman in the union. We poured many huge slabs. I can't lie, it isn't fun...lol. especially in winter when your fighting rain and cold temperatures.
@@MikeDayConcrete I worked one winter in North Dakota. We poured some slabs in 20 below temperatures. The concrete froze on the bottoms of are mag hand floats instantly. A guy walked around with a weed burner and his job to heat up the bottom of are mags to melt the concrete on it. It was ridicules and a pain in the ass. We always poured using a ground warmer that used hoses that pumped heated hydronic fluid through it and covered them with heating blankets for the night. Then a snow storm hit. We had to dig the snow and ice off of the blankets in order to move them by dragging them. They were so heavy with snow an ice on top of them. I would never work a winter in North Dakota ever again. It was hell...only freezing...lol.
I have the same two power screeds as you . The Marshalltown and mbw screed demon . I need to sell both of them . Because two years ago I stopped working for myself and went to work for a large concrete contractor as a foreman . The MBW is an awesome screed !
Hi Mike, my name is Dimitri. I have a small company of 9 guys and we are concrete floor specialist in Mauritius. We usually cast 40.00 x 10:00 x 0.20 mm thick in 1 pour including the power float finish. We also use a laser to control the levels. Every steps are quite similar except from your vibrating ruler. Instead we use a vibrator and poker and aluminium straight edge ruler to cut the concrete flat. We also use floor hardener at 5 kg/m2 by dry shaking and we power float with a rideon power float machine. We normally start at 8:00 in the morning and we finish at 19:00 hrs Let me have your opinion on our way of doing concrete floors. We also use a pump to pour the concrete. Regards Dimitri
Mike, I really like how you have the open ledge. We typically will form this with 2x10's nailed on edge to out outside vertical form, a 2x12. Lots of work to strip and finish. I'm curious how you suspend the 1-1/2" form and keep it secure?
We use a roller screed here in Minnesota 22’. We poured a driveway and little parking lot (80 yds) with my sons, age 15 and 12 running the screed and my other guys with rakes were hurrying to keep up with them screeding this off. A roller screed would have save you a lot of back labor. ( I’m not a troll). Love you’re videos. We’ve learned a lot. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
We called that shelve a "weather lip " I put a weather lip on all the residential garage floors I do ,,, just lay a 2x4 on its flat up against the garage door bucks that they screw the tracks to ,,,,, finish to the top of the 2x4 on the inside the bottom on the outside just like you did there ,,,usually after the first pass take the 2x4 out and finish underneath it brush it or float finish it !

Anybody have any experience with keeping a small bathroom in the corner of a slab isolated from the rest of the slab Incase there is a plumbing problem so I can just remove that section?
Hey, so we’re a non profit camp for people with disabilities that pours all our own concrete. We mostly pour walks between all of our buildings for accessibility. We use a vibrascreed for everything we can. One issue we’ve always had is pouring pads wider that the screed board like you’ve done here. It seems like If it’s not riding on the edge of our form it just sinks in. So to combat this we always have to put in a 2” steel pipe down the middle of the pad to ride on and then we pull it out after screeding. Are we doing something wrong that it always sinks in? Should we not be sitting on the edge of the form maybe? Also your videos a beyond useful! I’ve learned so much watching
I work for a precast plant. And we do everything by hand but we dont vines screeed we do it with a long piece of 2x4 it just depends I guess. We do use a vibrator however to get all the bubbles out.
Nice work! How far apart do you space trucks? We hand screed with a mag board and use a 2" flat bar on edge for screed guide in the center. Usually only do 20-30 yds at a time since it's just a two man crew with whatever day help we can scrounge up. It is a real pleasure to watch your crew work.
We use a somoro 840 laser screed and pan with 10’ STX finishing with 8’ HHN and HTX. Lot less work and a better job done. Good job doing it the hard way. Thanks for the video.
Still screeding with a caveman 2x4 and vibrating using a hammer on the forms as we're pouring out because bossman is stuck in the early 90s. Wonders why there's small dips in the slab though.
Sweet moneymaker there! No pipes, no pump, trucks spaced just right, no waiting. I bet you wish you had 3 or 4 of those every day, right? We have a cpl names for those forms on the edges in my area. Those specifically, most would call a ‘recess form’. Or some people might call them ‘depression forms’. Others might even refer to them as a small ‘floating form’. And you’re right. WAY better to ‘float’ them in there like you did instead of a solid 2x8 or 2x10. Then you HAVE to use a vibrator and invariably you always end up with a cpl voids that need to be patched. I wonder what they’re referred to in other areas.
Yea, it's pretty much impossible to get the air voids out using a 2x10 unless you strip it off and sponge it out. A lot more work in my opinion. The pouring and finishing part of these is the easy stuff, forming and stripping the forms is more work.
How do u keep the 1 1/2 from floating up? I did the shelf idea last time and for sure more time consuming When everyone knows there job makes pouring mud fun!! Good looking project Thanks Green and Son concrete

Great video! Do you ever run into the slab "shattering " when you pour directly on plastic? It's always been recommended to have a few inches of sand or dirt on top of the vapor barrier....
RE: a few inches of sand or dirt on top of the vapor barrier. That is some Californian ridiculousness. If water get into that layer, where should it go? It will creep out of the floor. Expect all kinds of fungi and mold. Obviously, the sand must be under the vapor barrier, obviously.
Mike, I know this is off topic. I need some help to help my son. He purchased a house with a in ground pool. The concrete is sinking in a couple areas about 1" to 1.5". The previous home owner skimmed a material over these edges to keep them from being a tripping point. These areas are now breaking up.... I know that having the concrete lifted would be the proper fix. Sadly, during this virus time funds are very tight. I can't help him because i make ends meet barely being a disabled veteran. What materials would i use to skim these lip areas? Also, what could i do to prep these areas to help the skim material stick better? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Mike. Love watching these videos. We do small jobs usually. My guys don't seem to learn well or don't want to. Anyway how do you charge for these ? Is everything by the square foot?
You mean use a jointer? It's easier to just cut it after. Especially when power troweling. We cut it the same day, as soon as we're done troweling. You'll see in the finishing video coming out next.
@@MikeDayConcrete all the dust. Our mason cuts it wet and then actually covers it up so you can't even see it. Also when pouring a garage he puts an 1 1/2" galv pipe at the edge for a smooth transition. That's a pro to me.
Do you pay your guys by the hour or by the day? Also, we tried using the vibrascreet but I think the guy I worked for ran the concrete too wet for it most of the time.
I've always been able to do concrete projects from a knowledge standpoint but for the labor I've never had enough guys all at once to attempt. When it comes to crete more guys is always better.

Thanks Mark. Having 3 or 4 good finishers does make doing these a lot easier. We only had 3 trowels on these finishing them.

We always poured using a ground warmer that used hoses that pumped heated hydronic fluid through it and covered them with heating blankets for the night. Then a snow storm hit. Been pouring storage units for three past 3 years they are a lot of work we used a 2x10 on edge for the recess along perimeter fun shit

I use a Simpson Strong Tie bracket from the 2x4 to the 2x12 to secure it.
How does the power screed not sink?
Just asking about that steel mesh that lies flat on the ground.

Not much spacing. On a job like this he just loads them as fast as he can.

No footings, just the thickened edge and a lot of gravel under it.

I have a "floor joist bracket" screwed into the 2x12 form and the cross brace that keeps it from floating.

Great video! Do you ever run into the slab "shattering " when you pour directly on plastic? It's always been recommended to have a few inches of sand or dirt on top of the vapor barrier....
No we don't have any problems doing it like this other than the bleed water.

That is some Californian ridiculousness. If water get into that layer, where should it go? It will creep out of the floor. Expect all kinds of fungi and mold. Obviously, the sand must be under the vapor barrier, obviously.

What happens with the inside form?
We remove it and clean up the edges while the concrete is still quite soft.
Mike, I know this is off topic. I need some help to help my son. He purchased a house with a in ground pool. The concrete is sinking in a couple areas about 1" to 1.5". The previous home owner skimmed a material over these edges to keep them from being a tripping point. These areas are now breaking up.... I know that having the concrete lifted would be the proper fix. Sadly, during this virus time funds are very tight. I can't help him because i make ends meet barely being a disabled veteran. What materials would i use to skim these lip areas? Also, what could i do to prep these areas to help the skim material stick better? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I notice you always use rear discharge chutes. The concrete companies up there don't have front dumps?
There's a few front dumps but mostly rear discharge.

Why don't you cut the pad wet, rather than coming back and cutting it with a saw?
You mean use a jointer? It's easier to just cut it after. Especially when power troweling. We cut it the same day, as soon as we're done troweling. You'll see in the finishing video coming out next.
@@MikeDayConcrete all the dust. Our mason cuts it wet and then actually covers it up so you can't even see it. Also when pouring a garage he puts an 1 1/2" galv pipe at the edge for a smooth transition. That's a pro to me.

Do you pay your guys by the hour or by the day? Also, we tried using the vibrascreet but I think the guy I worked for ran the concrete too wet for it most of the time.
Couple of my guys are salary and the others are by the hour.
Vibrating screed earned its keep saving destroyed backs.

I've always been able to do concrete projects from a knowledge standpoint but for the labor I've never had enough guys all at once to attempt. When it comes to crete more guys is always better.

Forming probably took a day and grading [with a machine] probably took another. Pour the 3rd day.
