Even though Xboxes are quite PC-like, Microsoft locks them down so that you can't install Windows on them. How and why do they do this?

360 and original can run Linux (you need to mod your xbox though)
And yes, you can run windows 1.0 on the NES if you replace the cpu, gpu, insert a floppy drive, replace the case, ports - so basically move the pc near the NES and run the pc.

@@diegomarquez3293 ps4 can so no reason the Xbox one couldn’t given that they have similar architecture. Just need to mod it. Someordinarygamers has a video on it where he was running Master Chief Collection on a PS4 by modding it, installing Linux, then going into a gaming windows VM to play MCC from steam. Though you may as well just build a PC at that point.

I love this channel! As much as I like LTT, some of it is a bit technical for me. Some of the tech quickies are review, but I love how clearly and succinctly he explains everything. And the mat graphic with the Windows kernel/Colonel was hilarious!

I asked the opposite question a month ago and still haven't gotten an answer about it, i wanna plug my xbox drive into my pc and use that as my main boot and hope my xbox will boot on a pc, this video told me i can't run windows on an xbox, but can i run xbox on a windows????

Cartriges referred here are ROMs. Data on them can be acceced practically as fast as RAM and is pretty much treated as RAM, just not the kind that can have data changed on it.
Switch is using flash storage that is treated just like an ssd or hardrive or SD card, so data from it has to be transferred to RAM before it can be used.
The Xbox does use a modified Windows 10 core though, with special containerized HyperV layer in the kernel.
The Xbox consoles have used a version of Windows as their basis from day one. The very first Xbox actually was based on Windows 2000. This despite the fact that XP had been released just before the console was. Clearly Microsoft has an easier time adapting the OS to work in such an odd environs, but that's what you get when you own the code.
@@sireuchre lol instead of .exe they use .xex from what i remember running on my XELL bootloader. its just different enough so it cant be easily copied.
@@anarrchybob6420 The 360 does use the exe format (PE) for all executables, they're just contained in xex files (and usually encrypted and compressed). Interestingly, they also have their own machine type for ppc64, which Windows NT isn't really compiled for (pre-NT 5.0 is compiled for ppc32 though).
I don't know too much about the Xbox, but I'm sure its xbe files are also just a container for a normal Windows NT PE.

There are some really smart people that could sabotage their bussines but would that not just be Karma for plagerising their GUI from Apple? Apple would have been monopolistic if that didn't happen too. Still kind of is TBH... They had better give some credit to the engineers at NVIDIA if they are including hardware accelerated ray tracing in their consoles... My favorite XEX file was the PCSXR emulator. 😁 😉

@@Dragoncam13 It's Windows 10 based VM in a custom Hyper-V environment. It's like they complicated the system as much as possible only to prevent people from turning the damn thing in a FFPC.

what if the newer xbox's could have a menu with two icons a pc icon for booting into windows 10 and the other icon a console to boot into the xbox interface?
the kernel and driver issues are prolly the hardest to tackle but there is an existing bootloader that allows you to boot ntfs drives called UEFI:NTFS, but people would prolly have to reverse engineer FATX and also port it over in some convenient way that doesnt require you to have to always keep a usb drive with the bootloader plugged in
I'm a big fan of ModernVintageGamer, love all of his informative videos, especially about homebrewing a console. So happy to hear he partnered up to help LTT with some information, he deserves more recognition.

Umm... I use BTRFS in an encrypted LVM in LUKs and I'm pretty sure my BIOS doesn't support any of those. Shouldn't the important thing be the filesystem of the bootloader, not the filesystem of the operating system?

By a technicality every single Xbox has run with code from the Windows kernel, Sure it’s not Windows like we know it (XP, 7, 8, etc) but it still is Windows

@@DroidTSK nah I'm pretty sure 360 is running a version of the windows 8 kernal now after the metro ui update a "few" years back, and before that it was Vista/7 based kernals.
The way I learned it went is...XBOX runs Windows 2000...XBOX 360 runs a modified dashboard system...XBOX One runs Windows 8 the changed to a Windows 10.
No. It's a custom OS they made. It's not running the Windows kernel like the XBOX and One.

@@oyasumioyasumi Don't worry too much about the tones. You'll get use to it real quick. Just listen to the words a lot and the tones will feel like a normal part of the pronunciation.
Also, use tools like pleco, a sophisticated chinese dictionary and learn by the media. Also all chinese shows have subtitles on it.

As for Chinese ,there are tons of different accents from different Chinese speaking country ,such as Taiwan ,China and Singapore. So don't be worried about tone wrong ,just talk more and listen more since learning start from mimicking, and one day you well have your own accent. Keep going!

Current gen Xbox already runs a form of Windows 10 with some HyperV goodness added.
But it runs a custom version with the proper drivers written for it.
Wouldnt you be able to run a windows vm through linux if linux works?

3:40 that's what I do, I can have all my steam library, pirated and original games, 60fps I can use either Xbox or ps4 controlers
Same with a Trident 3 for my living room. I use controller companion, have it boot directly to Kodi, have steam, origin and epic all as shortcuts and a xbone chatpad as a keyboard (with a small wireless as backup if anything goes really...really....really bad.
