      Drilling more holes in the outer case on the top is about the only effective option he has with the exception of somehow adding some external fans to improve cross flow but with the lack of space the system is creating convection (like heat swirls around in an oven) and it will eventually cook the CPU and will experience major thermal throttling in the GPU as well. While very cool this is just impractical due to the nature of PC components. This is why most PC cases are much larger that the parts you put in them!

  • @RegalPixelKing
    @RegalPixelKing ปีที่แล้ว +1330

    A part 2 would be really neat. Still though, hitting 80-90+ degrees on average will definitally hurt the lifespan of your components. If there is a part 2, if you somehow magically find a way to clean up the IO and make the temps more managable then that would be cool. Still, due to the space constrants I don't think it will be possible to get good power, noise, and heat distrobution. Maybe, it could be possible to get 2 out of the 3, but not all 3.

    The build would have definitely benefited from a vented air exhaust, as you stated in the beginning. I would've considered swapping the GPU with an FE style cooler that blows the hot air out. It will be tricky for the CPU, though. I haven't seen a consumer vented CPU cooler on the market.

    I think a blower style fan on the CPU cooler would help a lot with temps, since that fan is just blowing air at a blank plate at the moment. The little Noctua fans will be pulling most of the weight there, so glad you included them! Great video, and solid effort on what you've achieved here

  • @Voxator

    I would try to fiddle a bit more with the CPU and GPU undervolting and maybe try toswitch the small fans from exhaust to intake (without the shroud, it might not work very well in bringing cold air where it needs to be). that's the exact build to do a lot of experimenting and document the improvements! 3d printed air ducks that direct the air more intentionally, maybe liquid metal on both CPU and GPU, more aggressive undervolting/fan curves (I've had a lot of luck with undervolting in laptops, also setting profiles with throttlestop gives you a ton of customization, if you want the raw performance or prefer a quite system that still pushes all the frames it can)

    I really think if you switched the fans to intakes bringing some air in would help temps. You could also undervolt and under clock your gpu. I would install MSI afterburner and pull the power limit all the way down and set a max temp limit as well. You could also pull your gpu core clock down. Your already doing really well in the FPS department so loosing a few fps wouldn’t make a huge difference. I think your cpu is running so hot because the gpu is offloading all the heat to the cpu hence why I also think switching the fans around would help! Awesome video none the less. This definitely makes me want to take apart my old Xbox one X and do something similar to this! Tho I would probably get 12100F just because 4 cores would be plenty for gaming and reducing overall temps. Thank you for the video!

    Nice build. You can definitely drop 10c or more if you just drill some holes where the CPUs at and make sure the GPU also has ventilation. With your CPU cooler fan oriented that way, it's trying to suck in air thats blocked off so it being 90+ is not surprising. In regards to that EVGA card, the hot air is exhausted through the side fin stacks so a combination of more ventilation and small fans to help direct it out would help alot. An A2000 GPU would probably work well as its less than half the vol of that and takes only 70W or so. Definitely give a look at some of the SFF Yters, they've done some great builds in that size or even smaller. Would definitely be cool to see a part 2 where you polish and shine this up a bit!

  • @andrewholmes8570

    would like to see what custom case you come up with for the xbox, and the improvements that can be made to the PC. As for the PC, do you think drilling some holes above the CPU cooler and above the graphics card would subtract too much from the look? Or would you try vertical orientation to work with the existing perforations and convection. After looking at the back more would the power plug fit in the graphics card shroud, or does the plug interfere with the fans?

    Hi, great idea and very unique project. IMHO you should make many small holes just above the CPU fan (and if possible above the GPU fans). This will help with the temps and probably keep the OEM look as the Xbox already has small holes in other parts of its chassis. However, my experience with the Ryzen 5 5600x is that, whilst it is a low tdp cpu, it 100% needs a very good cooler, otherwise it gets easily to 90 degrees celcius under load. The stock AMD cooler cannot provide adequate cooling to this CPU.

      @adventureoflinkmk2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah was gonna say I did the same thing to a digital Dec PC, and also ran into 90 degrees C temps, on both a Ryzen 5 3600 and Ryzen 7 5800u.
      Custom fitting a 60mm 10000 RPM server fan inside and control with a potentiometer (believe me full speed sounds like a got dang jet engine) as well as using a low profile cooler pretty much made things more manageable.
      EDIT: and yes indeed the wraith stock cooler didn't help one iota, most likely due to the hat thing over the fan as well as the barely there clearance

    For the custom Xbox 360 build, you definitely gotta RGH it and make it the ultimate Xbox 360 that way you can run Homebrew, Linux, Emulators, unreleased and cancelled games, etc. It's a very simple process now with the release of RGH3.

    I would be interested to see what undervolting on this system would do to the temps. you can pull clockspeeds and wattage from the cpu as long as the gpu remains locked at 99% or so

      @@ultimateclappage9109 the gpu is probably where you would see the biggest power difference. when I undervolted my 3080 at stock clocks I shaved 70-90w off

    whats crazy is i have a Dell Inspiron One 2020, which is a all in one pc, and i was wanting to build a custom "gaming" pc, but didnt know where to start. This video helped alot, if all that could fit in a old xbox 360 then it can easily fit in my pc. the only issue i was having was figuring out the psu and i had no idea something like the one in this video existed, so thank you lol

    I have built a similar setup a few years ago and it's still rocking. I arranged the components in a very similar way, but the CPU and GPU are oriented towards opposite sides.
    I am still amazed by the looks. The 360 has a great design. Only temperature management turned out to be a problem. 😅
    I made some minor modifications to the case as I drilled a grid of holes into both sides at the location of the fans.
    What do you think about the series x? I'd like to modify that to a PC, but the dimensions are a little too small for a mini itx Mainboard

    For desoldering a component like the front LED and power button connector, you should try some Goot brand solder wick, flux and run your iron on a high temperature. Use leaded solder, you might need to reflow a few times since the factory solder is so old.

    Incredible project with great results!
    I kind of want to build one of these now too, but at the same time don't want to be spending so much money on components. Looks like it would be fun though. A good way to repurpose a shell of a broken Xbox360, and we know there's no shortage of those.
    I already have an Alienware X51 which is about the size of an Xbox360 and also an Alienware Alpha, which is about 1/3 of the size, so not in need of another small PC, but maybe one day...

    So, something I would have done was just mod a mini pc. They have some very powerful ones you can buy that don’t have a built in gpu, and they’re a lot cheaper, then if you wanted to, you could get a usb and PCI converter kit and a physically smaller gpu and hooked it all up for a more compact but still powerful gaming pc setup. Plus more room for cable management and air flow, and power supply management would have been easier too. But your project was still great! I loved everything about it and the amazing work you do on this channel man! Never stop dreaming and never stop doing what you love! This is truly a passionate art project. It’s something you love and it’s your own creation, it’s something special to you and only you, it holds a greater value to you then anyone else. That goes for any artist and creator.

    Very cool! This is an inspiring project :)
    As far as thermals go, there are a few things I would try.
    First would be to use a blower style GPU, so that most of the heat generated is dumped straight outside of the case instead of the current GPU which dumps its heat inside the case.
    Then I think creating as much natural heat dispersion as possible would be a good shout. Adding mesh to the bottom of the case, or creating little gaps in inconspicuous places. Enough of those will add up to some decent ventilation. I noticed that there is also a fair bit of meat left between the factory ventilation holes, so drilling each one out to a wider diameter will take away a decent amount of surface area of the mesh, while still looking stock.
    I think trying to squeeze another 40mm fan into there could also work if you got some low profile RAM. Using at least one of the fans as an intake might be worth a shot too.
    If you weren't too picky about keeping it looking totally stock you could add some feet to the bottom to give a nice airflow gap. You could even incorporate some thin width fans underneath to force a good amount of air into the case.
    Either way, awesome build! ^_^

    loved the video honestly tempted to try it myself and see how far I would get, not sure how much room you have available in the case, but I think it would be cool if you used an Arduino nano to run a little code that makes the LEDs on the front light up how they used too on the original xbox when you first turned it on. I know it's a lot of effort for such a small detail but just a random idea. also, could maybe mod on of the old HD dvd players to include a standard sata drive so you could run original xbox games but that's a much less useful feature these days anyway, either way, loved the vid.
