Gary opens this conversation by saying seeing CB play a small club on the upper west side was a life changing experience. I think he is referring to CB's gigs at Ungano's club down the street from Lincoln Center in Jan. '71. I was at one of those gigs and if am correct on Gary's statement it too was a life changing experience for me.
That video is fantastic Gary, I really loved it. So beautiful that you were able to become part of Beefheart's career. If you could ever give me the chance, I'd love to have an interview with you :) I'm a music journalist from Buenos Aires (Argentina)
I have seen the Magic Band 5 times live, and once I was fortunate enough that Gary was the guitarist. Being connected to you Gary on Facebook has been one of my greatest joys.
Don said that he knew things were taking a turn for the worse with Mercury, when he went into an exec's office and pulled down his sock and "didn't see any little wings".
i saw the capt in vancouver bc at the commodore ballroom in the early 80s...he did the bat chain puller album...it was EXACTLY the same live as it was on the album...does that EVER happen?
i love seeing capt beefheat get this media attention. a true artist, uncompromising, obviously not only in it for the money!

What an amazing story, if I could tell one anecdote about myself in my life like that and have it be true, I'd die happy.

I saw Gary play with Beefheart at the Euphoria Tavern in Portland, OR in '81. Great show. Gary was wearing a derby, a red one IIRC.
I'm from Portland but saw the '81 Doc tour in Bellingham WA. I went in with one head & came out with 1⅓.
