It's incredible to think that Parkend was a hive of industry at one time, Patrick. But nowadays, at least it survives with the tourist industry, and what a pleasant place it is. The Dean Forest Railway station and signal box complete with the Great Western locomotive on the front of the train certainly give that olde world traditional look of earlier years. Marvellous, that preserved system is. It was pity that it poured down and you got soaked on your way to Moseley Green. Mallards Pike and the lake seem a very pleasant place, nice and quiet, I suppose. Anyhow, Patrick, another lovely video you've provided us with here, and many thanks for this.
I remember this was one day of rain for the most part, but I was happy to have got some filming donw. Funnily enough, I've just published a video of the steam railway as I went there earlier this year. Thanks as always Ffranc for all your comments and for watching 👍
This video has bought back lots of memories. The Carnival and car boots at Parkend. Taking the children from the nursery where I worked to see Thomas train in Lydney. Mallards Pike especially when our daft collie chased across the frozen lake after bread that our daughters were feeding the ducks with and Roger playing darts in the Forest Pubs. Thank for your lovely video's.
Not very often we see you having to endure weather as bad as that but no amount of rain can spoil that lovely scenery; thanks for a brilliant video as always.
Thanks as always for your kind words Jeff. Yes I wouldn't normally film in this kind of weather, but as I had booked accommodation in the area at the time, i needed to do it then or it wouldn't have got done 😀
I love it Patrick when we're on a walk and we have to take shelter because of heavy rain. it's kind of magical. I know you wanted to do the walk and I think you did well after. In fact the rain added to the atmosphere but enough is enough. The pub would have been a nice stop off but Malards Pike Lake was great and hey you might have even made it back to the pub. You know what i do that Patrick get off and on buses to walk. It;s a good way. Very enjoyable once more in the fabulous Forest of Dean. Take care out there, Mark
Hi Mark, yes I must admit despite taking shelter for a while, watching the rain fall by that church was very calming in its own way. Although I got to the stage where I was just so wet through I decided to get back to the car, it's nice not to do walks in bright sunshine every single time, as you say it adds atmosphere. Mallards Pike Lake was a good end anyway as it was drying up then and a great place to relax after finishing the walk. Thanks again Mark for giving this a watch and for your great comments as usual. All the best to you. Cheers, Patrick :)
I could see it Patrick - a part of you enjoyed the rain. Mind you there is a time when we say, 'that's it, I had it with this one.' That's not defeat that's just being pragmatic. I agree, the lake was a great place to end the trip. And it inspired a good memory.
Sometimes just sometimes Patrick the weather can be cruel and yet i really enjoyed this ok i must admit the heritage railway at parkend was a wonderful start also sheltering by the church made us smile we did feel for you ,.. it did work out ok in the end ....The forests and woods around mallards pike look great even with the overcast weather...so once again well done and thank you for sharing .... regards Frank & Lee.....ps loved the shot of you smiling in front of thomas lol ...
Ha ha I just knew you'd love that shot Frank!! :) Great railway isn't it, must take a ride on it someday. I was sheltering by that church think "should I or shouldn't I carry on", but I went for it and just got so wet through I felt a real prat! :) never mind, as you say it did work out in the end and ending at Mallards Pike was just fab. As always Frank and Lee thank you so much for watching. Cheers, Patrick :)
Good timing catching Thomas the train! Wet or dry, The Forrest of Dean is a lovely place to visit. Your jacket sure dried up fast from the morning forrest trail hike to the lake later on in the afternoon. Thumbs up!
I got very lucky there Richard! :) It was a warm day despite the rain and thunderstorms, so luckily my clothing did dry quite quickly. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Patrick :)
A thoroughly enjoyable watch and listen Patrick. Very informative. It was good sat here now during this heat wave to see and hear the rain but obviously not so good for you on the day. Mallards Pike is a beautiful place. Thank you. Paul :)
Hi Paul, yes the rain was unfortunate, but actually it didn't last for too much of the day so I couldn't complain really. Great place Mallards Pike, lots of walks around there., All the best to you Paul. Cheers, Patrick :)
Hope you enjoyed the quick half🍺 The Dean Forest station and line was brilliant, how lucky to catch the train, the shot you set up where you turned and smiled with Thomas the tank engine behind you was fab, although rubbish for walking in,and well done for carrying on,the rain and thunder made the early part of this film very atmospheric, especially the thunder through the headphones, great music too. I love a quiet bench, and although a little too near to the bridge (and therefore flow of people) the bench just after the bridge at Mallards Pike was awesome and I could have sat there all day,the lake was stunning. I remember you being worse for wear,in your fedora and bikers jacket, and the line "who else would be walking, wearing all black and pissed up " I really enjoyed those hour long films with scripts and although he didn't deliver that line, although he was there,Michael was a really good actor,I think you once said he was a drama school student. Another brilliant film Patrick, thank you so much. Pete.
I earned that quick half after that terrible weather! :) I nearly gave up filming because it got so bad, but then as I was about to move on it brightened up so I was able to get on to Mallards Pike to film that section. I was indeed lucky to catch the sight of the train at Parkend, a real bonus. You remember the older film clearly as you've quoted the line about being all in black, which I was, although wasn't actually in my jacket and fedora in that particular earlier film. Thanks again Pete for your continued support :)
Certainly a wet one, Patrick! How the many fields and rivers could benefit from that kind of rainfall right now... I recognise some of the places you visited. Although I've not deeply explored the Forest of Dean, I did Go Ape there two years ago. All the best.
It was rather moist Olly! :) Yes we could do with some of that rain right now. Well I can't recommend this area enough Olly if you've not deeply explored it. There will more films in this area in the near future, but do go if you can. I bet you enjoyed Go Ape, would have loved to have tried that zip wire myself, looked like a lot of fun! Cheers, Patrick :)
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Thomas a Blue Engine? This was a delightful movie with a superb sound track that suited it to a tee. It's definitely amongst my favourite of your compositions. Not very often you hit upon weather as appalling as that but at least it dried out in the end. I really loved this video and the area, Mallards Pike Lake(s) in particular looked truly lovely. I wouldn't mind visiting myself next time I am in the area. Great work Patrick, thank you for your effort.

There is a brass band in Parkend as well called Parkend Silver Band
👍
