Delightful tour of a fantastic piece of railway restoration in a wonderful forest setting. Everything looks beautifully preserved and in good working order. The bookshop is a gem. Great stuff! Thank you!

Thanks Malcolm. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, the DFR passes through the stunning wooded Lyd valley. I will return for Part 5 to cover Norchard, which has an interesting history all of its own. Yes, I filmed the bookshop, but realised I couldn't carry books while filming, and was planning to return to buy some after shooting the video. Unfortuately, I forgot to go back to the shop! Ah, well, next time! Cheers, Paul.

Oh there is nothing like the sound of the whistle, the chug chug chug of the train and the billowing steam from the chimney on the locomotive. I can so imagine the children on those trains being quite entertained and amazed. I bet it also brings back memories to the volunteers who assist on days like this. Another train gem Paul. Just loved it. 👌🇳🇱🙋‍♀🇳🇿🎉

Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the tour of this little restored gem of a station on the DFR. Yes, it was good to see lots of families enjoying themselves in the sunshine. Take care, Paul

You got some brilliant steam train footage Paul! So many different angles and really interesting clips. Lots of interesting info too. Really enjoyed it! Love the whistles of the trains!

Thank you Louise! I think the sunny weather helped a lot. The station there is incredible! I wish I had taken photos of it in the 1970s to compare with now. It was a bit of a muddy, run down place then, but thrilling too! Glad you enjoyed the video. Take care, Paul 🙂👍

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland.
What a fantastic video from Parkend. Lovely to see the sites and hear the sounds of this wonderful railway without commentary and music. Very atmospheric. Your still photographs and historical information. was brilliant too. Thanks so much
See you again soon. Stay safe please

Hi Paul, a huge grin swept across my face when your caption said "No DMU today - just steam"!!!
Actually I quite like to see all types of heritage stock. It's great to see these railways being used and providing a service albeit only a tourist one.
Interesting to see the crank axle wheel sets, you don't often get to see these. I also liked the hinge brackets on the crossing gates some really solid ironwork, were they made practically onsite I wonder. The footbridge reminded me of the ones that we had on our Hornby Dublo layout!!
You caught some great clips of the gates being closed and the engine running round, they certainly accelerate quickly and they need some close control to stop just before the gates.
The recordings of the sounds of the engine were perfect and came across brilliantly especially using head phones👏👏.
That was a nice shout out for Ron, and well deserved as well. With you two and "Vintage" Ron I'm learning lots about this corner of England. I never used to understood why the Flour Mill Works, where they overhaul steam engines, was located in the Forrest of Dean - with no rail connection. I have a better understanding now.
Easter is now over for us down here Monday is only a public holiday in Catalonia (Barcelona region) so back to work tomorrow!!
    Have a great Easter Monday!!
PS: I will post some pictures of Easter sights and the sounds of the marching brass bands

Thank you David! Yes, when I started filming I thought I had seen a poster and web link for Heritage DMU services to Parkend for the spring. Like you, I was plesantly surprised when the steam loco turned up! However I have nothing against diesel on heritage lines, as long as it is part of the overall mix of trains. Thank you for noticing and commenting on the audio mix - that took longer to edit than the visuals. A wet and very windy Easter Monday here - so I spent it editing - another video will arrive on my channel (a canal one) all being well this evening. Thanks for a lovely comment, take care, Paul.

Good video! I too first experienced Parkend as a child in the 1970s. It was delightfully bucolic with grass growing over the sleepers. We walked up the Marsh Sidings, which were still in use then. Thanks for posting - a new subscriber.

Thank you - and welcome to Westcountry Wanderings! Yes, I remember it being covered in very high grass - and lots of mud too! The volunteers have done an incredible job I think. Cheers, Paul.

That is a lovely video Paul. My brother lives in the Forest, so have been to Parkend numerous times over the years. However, have never actually seen a train in action at Parkend. Must be because most of my trips there tend to be off season. Last time there, I stayed in a delightful Bed and Breakfast in Parkend called Deanfield, maybe 10 minutes walk from the station. The station is immaculately preserved. Best wishes, Ian.

Thank you Ron! As well as my 'Lost Railway Walks' series (I have a new one being published today), I will visit heritage lines from time to time. I have a trip planned to another one this weekend. I am sure that I will return to the Dean Forest Railway, which has so much charm and atmosphere, at some future point. Thanks again, Paul

    Great footage
I have to confess that despite it being
    second division to Gloucestershire's
other heritage railway, it's my personal
    favourite of the two 🙂

Thank you Stephen! Yes, I prefer the DFR to the GWSR too! I like both, and the scale of the GWSR and range of their locos is phenomenal, but the DFR wins for me on friendlness and landscape and atmosphere. There are still many heritage lines I have yet to cover in the region - Severn Valley Railway, Bristol Docks, Paignton & Dartmouth, South Devon, Plym Valley, Somerset & Dorset at Midsomer Norton, Helston Railway...so many, as well as some narrow gauge too like the Evesham Valley (which I think is still operating, but currently up for sale?). Hopefully, I will get to them all! Cheers, Paul.

Yes you certainly have your work cut out
I was going to suggest a Somerset & Dorset
themed vid featuring Bath Green Park and
Midsummer Norton (murder capital of UK 😉) station which is open forthcoming Wednesdays for Wickham Trolley rides
Plenty of scope for covering the 'Withered Arm' too (the Southern lines west of Exeter)

You had a lovely Spring day for the visit. I have been to GWR (repeating myself) but never got to the Forest of Dean Railway so it was interesting to see. Now I shall try and catch up with the other uploads of the railway to see the rest of it.I must admit I was pleased to see a steam train was on duty. My son loved all the Thomas the Tank Engine series and I think I fell in love with the engines as well. Thanks.

Thank you Diana 👍It was a gorgeous spring day on Good Friday there. I haven't yet explored the main centre at Norchard on the Dean Forest Railway. There is much to explore around Parkend too, so I think it is somewhere I will be returning to. Thanks again, take care, Paul 👍🙂

Very interesting and enjoyable video Paul. Reminds me when i was working on the Railway in the 60s at Standish junction sisnal box as a Train recorder then a Porter at Stonehouse Burdet Road as a porter.

    Hi Paul.
A wonderful video with some fabulous shots. You really do put David Bailey into second place.
My brother is a retired GP and lives in Coleford, so I would love to see a railway video of that area and the history of the tracks and stations that led up to his home town. It would be something that would interest him greatly.
I look forward to more uploads of the West Gloucs area and not just railway orientated ones as I live in South London and it's a fair distance to travel there & back, not to mention the expense for a pensioner.
Keep up the good work Paul as it's greatly appreciated. Maybe one of the television companies should offer you the opportunity of filming a railway series for national viewing. It would certainly make a change from a lot of the garbage that is currently being broadcast.
    Take care my friend,
    Paul. 👍

Yes, the Coleford GWR museum is well worth exploring. It isn't often open, Fridays and Saturdays only if I recall (please check their website). It is a cornucopia of GWR and Severn & Wye railwayana!
