Spoiler alert This is the last time they see each other. After this, he goes off to fight in Dunkirk. We see him with that postcard of the cottage after the retreat from Dunkirk, that really happens. But at the end, Briony explains that he died that night before his regiment could evacuate in the morning, from septicemia (infected wound in his chest). That shot of her pulling away from him on the bus is the last time he'll see her. Their reunion at the cottage, on the beach at Dover, is Briony's imagined reunion, but they were in fact both killed in 1940.
