  • The real truth is that Cecilia and Robbie were never reunited: Robbie died of septicaemia at Dunkirk on the morning of the day he was to be evacuated, and Cecilia died months later in a bombing at central Balham tube station during the Blitz.
Atonement (2007) SYNOPSIS: On July 15, 1988 -- the day of their college graduation -- two people from opposite sides of the tracks begin a lifelong friendship. Emma (Anne Hathaway), an idealist from a working-class family, wants to make the world a better place. Dexter (Jim Sturgess), a playboy, thinks the world is his oyster. For the next 20 years, the two friends reunite on the 15th of each July, sharing dreams, tears and laughter -- until they discover what they've been searching for, each other.

My mother had a serious beau who died in WWII. Don't know which branch of service, or which theater. My father survived four years in the Pacific; they married more than a decade after the war's end. My best friend's father survived the Normandy invasion, I think Omaha Beach. Both men came home with what is now called PTSD.
Yes, we do have many blessings in the West. But I think this decade is going to be the worst since the Great Depression and WWII. Enjoy what we have.

I read the book when it first came out, and the ending was devastating. But in the book she is sitting in her room after her birthday party and the revelation is all in her mind. I thought there was no way they could pull it off in the movie. But by having her doing an interview they found the perfect solution. And Atonement is one of the few movies that lived up to the book

What she did was utterly wrong and horrifying, but she was also 13 and far from capable of truly grasping the consequences of her actions by forethought alone. I blame much more every adult that chose to believe her because it was convenient, and then turned a blind eye when it was obvious they had the wrong guy as to not stir the pot. Briony was NOT the only person that helped destroy Robbie and Cecilia’s lives, but she was the youngest and the only one that actually regretted what she did.

A little imaginary girl. Thinking that her sister couldn’t possibly want Robbie. It had to be by force. It had to be build up like one of her novels. But.. she knew even then she made a mistake. But she was too much in need of drama. She could have said she was mistaken at any time. It she didn’t. I’m glad she felt guilty for life. She deserved to. It’s one thing to be in shock over the adult world of one’s sister, and not know about desire yet. It’s another of framing Robbie of child r*pe. But she spun her stories and I suppose she did do them one kindness in the end. Although they were not alive to know about it, so to me it feels like she just wanted to rid herself of her guilt.
Robbie was so sweet. His whole life ruined by a little girls fantasies.

Afraid not. With septicemia/sepsis, he was doomed regardless. A few hours would not have mattered; probably not even a few days. The only antibiotic available in 1940, the year of the Dunkirk evacuation, was sulfa/sulfonamide, which is not preferred for sepsis. Pencillin, derivatives of which are used for sepsis, wasn't available until a few years later, and the other classes of antibiotics effective for sepsis were developed later. Nor would the advanced modern ICU treatments which help people survive sepsis have been available 80 years ago.
Even with modern antibiotics and critical care treatment, sepsis kills about 270,000 Americans yearly. Antibiotics are much more likely to be effective early in the course of the disease, and should be started as soon as sepsis is suspected. My father died 25 years ago of sepsis, though he had been getting IV antibiotics for several days immediately prior to his death; someone I knew died last year of sepsis while in the hospital. Admittedly, they were both old and in poor underlying health, but even today, young, healthy people with sepsis who get prompt treatment for the condition can still die. (Most people treated will survive.)

vanessa redgrave is absolutely amazing in this scene. 5 minutes of screentime and she pins the whole movie together. and even though she did cause all this heartbreak and tragedy in a sense, you can't help but feel so, so bad for her. she was just a child, acting in a moment of childish spite. and really there was absolutely nothing she could do after that; the dice were cast and there was just no chance for her, or anyone, to take it back. then for her to live a whole life carrying that burden of guilt... she's the third victim in the tragedy.

First time I saw this movie I was on the verge of tears when they showed that Robby died.
One of the worst fears a man can face is to be blamed for a crime he didn’t commit. Especially one that is an act against women or children.
The man’s life was ruined is every single way because of a crazy girl’s immaturity. This happens so much in these days, and there doesn’t seem to be any consequences for the women that do this type of disgusting behavior.

Did you watch the movie, read the Book?
It was Not the War that Killed Robbie and Cicila. Briony Killed them.
Briony Lied and got Robbie arrested. He spent many years in Prison.
Robbie would have gotten his college degree and would have been an officer in the War instead of a lowly Private on the front line. Robbie was killed because of the danger he was constantly in by being a Private in the Infantry the Most Dangerous occupation in the War.
Cecilia and Robbie would have gotten married long before the war. She would have lived a completely different life. She wouldn't have been killed in the Subway.
Briony was as EVIL a Character as has ever been written.

I don’t think the point of the book and movie is to hate briony I think it was both briony and the war I don’t think briony was completely evil it was a misunderstanding of a young girl she was evil in a way yes but she felt remorse which is why she put them in a book she was sorry for what she did but couldn’t change it in real life The real villain is the chocolate millionaire he was an adult and knew briony wasn’t telling the truth but he didn’t admit that he did it the war ruined a lot of lives including officers so I think it was a mixture of war briony and chance it shows how life isn’t always fair even to good people..that’s just my thoughts on it

I'm an adult and I think I'm mature but I'll never forgive that horrible little girl!!! Not only did he irreparably destroy the life of a very sweet, kind, good and very much in love with Cecila, but he destroyed his sister's life out of "jealousy" (let's admit it, he had a crush on Robbie). Liar, envious and coward until the end and beyond, (unfortunately I lent the book and they didn't give it back to me), the ending with the interview only made me even more angry: totally cowardly not to admit and invent an end of convenience while those two soul mates are death in an atrocious way without being able to see each other again and love as it was right !!! I cried every time Robbie said (or thought) "our future can start again" , and Cecilia; "... it completely devastated me !!! I would like Joe Writh (I think ) the director to do it again but by making Robbie go home to Cecilia . And I have to agree with those who spoke of septicemia : in 2006 (coincidentally when the film I contracted septicemia and I'm alive by chance and due to the skill of the doctors, but I was practically already half dead Robbie couldn't have survived .... not in 1940 ... I deluded myself that at least in the end they could find each other in Heaven .... I just conclude by saying that both James McAvoy and Keira were very good , they gave me (especially James ) such deep and intense emotions that I could not stop crying .. nor sleep ....

During the Blitz, usually citizens went to air raid shelters. Balham Station was one of them. During the Blitz, a semi-armour-piercing fragmentation bomb fell on the road above Balham and killed 64 people. Cecilia, had she existed, would have been killed alongside them.
