Replacing the thermostat on my Yamaha F50 was a snap as the housing cap is exposed for the world to see. On my F6, however, things were cryptic. This video showed me the way right to it. Thanks!

Grease all the bolts before replacing, to make it easier next time. Also when putting grease on the spline, don’t’ put grease on the very top of the splines. This can create a vacuum between the spline and the crank making it very difficult to remove again. Lube the sides of the spline though.i cannot stress the value of putting the proper grease on any bolt that you are replacing.

Thanks Steve, very informative. I had my first go at servicing my outboards. Looks like I did everything apart from the Thermostats.

Good on ya for doing your own maintenance. Getting ready to do a third 100 hour service on mine. I knew from experience that you were not going to remove that lower spark plug with your ratchet. The best way I have found to remove that lower plug is with the factory tool. They are cheap to pick up and keep in your tool kit. Also it is best to buy a new pair f plug cables.

Thanks. Just stumbled on your videos. Great videos. I’m hoping to be a cat owner sometime in the future.

Thanks for this. We just acquired a Seawind 1000. So we are subscribing and want to stay in touch.

I have a Yamaha 9.9MSHKZ that slipped out of forward at full throttle yesterday and, now, slips b4 full throttle. I hear reversing the gears and the dutch clutch has a good chance of working, but, I cannot find a video to explain how to dissemble and reassemble. Can you advise on that procedure?

I forgot to ask, I have not addressed the anchor winch yet. Do you know if this has a service interval?

Does your current 9.9 Yamaha have the power tilt feature, and the external gear shifter. I also have a Seawind 1000 1996. Trying to re-power her now, having trouble finding an outboard in the 9.9 range, without power trim features. Do you have any suggestions? Trying not to do any modifications to the Fiberglass engine wells. Thank you.

If that’s a 4 stroke, then I have the same OB. Does the thermostat prevent the water from circulating when the motor is cold in the same way a thermostat in a car stays closed until the engine warms up? Or should the water start flowing immediately even when the motor is cold?

We also just acquired a Seawind 1000 (SeaQuel) and are enjoying your videos. I have a question, is there a good way to remove the 9.9s from their nacelles for service?

There’s no good way to remove them. If they are newish ones they are small enough to lift out the top but not really worth the trouble. I would service them from a tender or beach the boat and do them at low tide.
