    Hello, I just found this video (yes, I know I'm 11 years late lol) and I have to say: as a 19 year old guy who is trying to build a timeless wardrobe from scratch, I greatly appreciated the simplicity of this explanation. Thank you very much.

    I have colder weather and a long classic overcoat is fine - but I do layer and rec you do as even large coats can't trap warm air around the body as a few layers of wool and cotton can.

    I have a black double breasted bridge coat that is 90% wool. The coat is an older style that covers my mid thigh and has some space for a light layer underneath (My winters only get around -10 C), love it!

    I find it problematic that we can only see 1/3 of the coat when you wear it. You also emphasize that it must fit which would even make a whole view more important for us to follow your tips.

    • @glenn2595
      @glenn2595 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree, I was going to mention that, Anthony, you need to show us a full view of the coat and how it fits. Telling us it's 3" below the knee, or that your jacket sleeve and shirt cuff are protected isn't enough. Get your wife to film you if you have to and do at least one pull back, or add stills to the end of the video. I really appreciate your advice and follow your videos, but this one looked rushed from a production standpoint. of course I'm replying to a video shot 6 years ago and you've gotten better at it, but I wanted to 'voice' my opinion as well.

    I have some nice dressy high end and middle of the road civilian overcoats and top coats, but by far I'm most excited latley about a moss/olive green military [ surplus ?] USA made light weight trench manufactured by Sterlingwear of Boston I just picked up, it was issued to someone (has their name inside collar and inside the belt) but doesn't look like was ever used , 8 bucks and looks every bit as sharp more so actually than my dept store one, and I got it for 10 percent of the price. Thrift stores are the way to go on buying these things as they can be found for pennies on the dollar.
    This is a great guide Antonio and gives people shopping new used high end or mass market , the hallmarks to look for and things to consider to make a smart purchase

    My basic coat rules: Leather jacket without the thermal-lining for off-work casual or trench coat without thermal-lining for work on slightly cool/rainy days. Leather jacket with thermal-lining for off-work casual or trench with thermal-lining for work on chilly/rainy days. My wool naval pea-coat for off-work casual or my wool or cashmere dress overcoat for work on cold/snowy days. On deep-freeze cold and heavy snowy days I pull out the big insulated parka for both off-work and work occasions. If its near 0 degrees Fahrenheit and/or blowing snow, being stylish goes out the window in favor of warmth, protection and survival. I can wait to be stylish when I get inside safe and warm from the arctic hell and take off the parka!

  • @nj2mddude205

    There's a lack of variety in overcoats today. For example, today it's pretty much next to impossible to buy off the rack a raglan sleeve or even a tweed overcoat made from real heavyweight wool material. In the early 1980s, I purchased a charcoal tweed herringbone overcoat from Georgetown University Shop, a real men's clothing shop. The coat was so heavy, I would only wear it when the temperature dropped below 30 degrees. Due to global warming, I donated it to charity a few years ago. My alternative was a Burberry raglan sleeve overcoat. It too is heavy, and I still own it. Btw, real men wear full length overcoats. The above the knee overcoats are for women who want to show off their legs!

    • @superyoshibros99
      @superyoshibros99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +NJ2MDdude I agree, i'm tired of these modern overcoats where it's always knee level - above the knee. I'll be honest, finding a full length coat is so hard. The only place that carries it is K&G or Jos. A Bank, but they're soooo expensive! The first overcoat I had was knee length, and I hated it, I hated it with a passion, I look like a pussy wearing it. 2 years later, I donated it to the goodwill and while donating it, I decided to see what coats they had and BAM! A whole aisle of overcoats that all go below the knee, brands varrying from calvin klein, ralph lauren, to nino cerruti. I bought a nino cerruti one, only payed 16 bucks, goes below the knee, is double breasted, has huge pockets on the inside, peak lapels, and i'm satisfied with the thing! A whole lot better the previous coat I had, this coat made me feel like a badass walking around the park, I really felt like a man. Money well spent.

    • @jamesmccormick9914
      @jamesmccormick9914 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      NJ2MDdude overcoats That are above knee level are not overcoats, they’re pea coats. Pea coats are totally different. That, or there really are overcoats that are that crappy.

    Hi Antonio.
    I'm having trouble choosing a size for a Soviet/Russian navy greatcoat.
    I have a 42" chest and the store has a coat for that size.
    But, it's an online store and I don't know if the coat is oversized to account for a suit to be worn underneath. Which I don't want, because I live in Australia and winters aren't THAT cold here where I need to wear 4 layers of clothing.

    Great video! Do you have any recommendations for a college student on a tight budget for good winter wear? I have a nice dark tan swede jacket from McGreggor I got last year that keeps me war but for a casual, but refined look, can you recommend a decent clothier within the $150 range? (I want to save the jacket for more dressy situations.. not to mention I have black scarves, gloves, hats ect.) Thank you in advance!

      +Angel OfTheRedSands Hitler pooped. Hitler liked painting. Should we not poop and/or paint (sometimes at the same time)?

      Nah, you're right. The time of leather coats is long gone. Nowadays the only acceptable form of leatherwear is jackets and gloves.
