I have recently discovered the wonders of vests/waistcoats and am loving it. For my work it allows me to look extra good and I get more compliments when I only wear a vest rather then a 3 piece. I also find it’s a great way to keep my tie in place throughout the day so I’m actually more comfortable with a vest on then not. As spring moves closer to summer I’m going to see if I can keep wearing a vest in the hotter months. Wish me luck!!
I started wearing sweater vests during the cooler months back in High School and, by the time I finished college, full-on waistcoats had become my signature look. To this day, everywhere I know everyone instantly recognizes me. So not only is it a great, comfortable outfit, but it makes a statement, helps you stand out without trying too hard, and it's a conversation piece! I learned this from experience, but your point about the slimming effect is absolutely miraculous; I've always carried a few extra pounds on me, but a vest really does help me look more balanced (and even though I'm 6' 2", taller, too).
I'm really grateful for this video Antonio! I've been thinking about purchasing a vest but always kept procrastinating as I wasn't really sure about it but now I think you gave me that push I needed. :) I've been a subscriber for a while, your videos are always very well constructed (especially love how you add images as examples), keep up the good work sir!
What a coincidence that this video should come out today! Last night I was doing research on waistcoats, and most of the info I found had them being used with morning suits. I love the look though, and plan on wearing them with regular suits anyway. I made an appointment with a tailor for next week in order to design some in different colors and fabrics, having them made double breasted and without buttons. Thanks for the video and infographic! You are an inspiration
Antonio thank you for great content and for the history behind the clothing. I was never a guy into fashion or material of clothing but now that I'm a little older working in my field of study I understand the importance of being well groomed and dressing for the position and where you want to go in life. Thank you again :-)
Ernest Williams glad to hear that - solid comment. here's why I never get tired of dressing sharp: www.realmenrealstyle.com/never-tire-of-dressing-sharp/
Very nice video! I wear a vest at work, basicly for the reasons you mentioned here. It's less sweaty, you can move around more easily, and you don't damage the 'sleeves' when caring items!
As a professional photographer, I appreciate your intro regarding the "look" of the wedding photographer... I normally wear black shirt, belt, pants,shoes.... and don't bother with a vest or jacket as they are too limiting... I already wear a harness, called the Cotton Carrier... wouldn't that look silly with a vest beneath? Thank you for the video and pointers... I really appreciate the historical aspects... thank YOU.
i have been obsess with steampunk since a kid, now at 35 i am getting into it. thank you your great video. i hope to make a few steampunk vests for personal use.
You learn something new everyday, I always assumed 'Vest' was simply the American term for Waistcoat because when you think of the term 'waistcoat' it sounds quite posh and I always see American websites advertise 'vests' rather than 'Waistcoats' whereas over here in the UK they're usually called just called waistcoats. I'm a big fan of three piece suits but I haven't gotten round to buying one however when I was in College a few years ago where we could wear non uniform (Here in the UK in our schooling up to 16 years old we have uniforms with the school logo/crest on) but we had to keep it fairly formal which for most ended up being chinos or suit trousers, lumberjack plaid shirt or plain cheap work shirt and wingtip dress shoes however I always enjoyed the formal waistcoat look and so I purchased three waistcoats and matching trousers and wore them daily for the two years I was there (Apart from a few summer days when it was too warm) but I surprisingly didn't get any 'flak' for dressing more formal than the others, in fact I became recognised for it, my Information Technology tutor would nickname me 'waistcoat boy' as he also wore a vest and shirt without a tie and by the end of my Sixth Form college education during the end of year 'awards' (More recognition with a small plaque) I was awarded Best Dressed Boy of the entire Sixth Form. I find vests are a underrated piece of clothing these days, I usually see a simply two piece suit on most men working in offices these days, rarely ever double breasted suits, waistcoats or even more rarely, the double breasted waistcoat! It's a shame they've faded out of the classic regular wear along with mens hats, the old 1940s look I saw in the old black and white movies I loved seems to be 'too dressy' these days unfortunately but as you said Antonio, have the confidence to be the best dressed guy in the room!
Maybe it's because I'm young, but in my opinion- Vest only > suit jacket And I am talking about the hipster look with cuffed jeans, crazy glasses, dyed hair, stupid socks and no ties. I an talking about a dark look with a shirt with cuffs, subtly complex tie, thin dress socks, a pair of dark oxfords, 4-5 button vest, and dress pants. I think it looks amazing, and if it wasn't for sports or money I would dress like that all the time. Some might call me a waiter or bartender, but I don't care because I look fly.
What I'm actually wearing is: -A white cuffed button down shirt. -Dark Denim Jeans cuffed at the bottom -Suede Dessert Boots dark brown -Tortoise shell Wayfarer sun glasses and of course! a vest. sand colored at the front and light-blue "melange" at the back. Love the look. Pretty fashion-forward.
Awesome video! I've actually just recently started to look into being more "fashion forward" and have started looking into adding vests to my wardrobe. Thanks for the tips!
Great video. I bought two vests a few months ago just to try out a new look. I tried on different L and XL vests. The L was too short and didn't get down to the waist, revealing the shirt. I knew this was a no-no. The XLs were perfect in length - not too low, not too short - and fit my shoulders well. The only problem I'm having is that these XL vests aren't SLIM enough as I taper down towards the waist. I have a larger upper body, but then slim down. I have to constantly adjust the strap in the back of the vest to tighten up and make it fit properly. I think I might have to go to a tailor and ask them if they can slim it a bit.
I wish I could find this same TH-cam videos for "Real Women Real Style". Everything I find is for young women. Not so much for the older, actively working women.
I love your videos Antonio! Every time im watching one ill get a light bulb above my head wondering about a question about style i look at the suggested videos and bam exactly what im looking for!
I need help with coordinating colors that are not exactly the same. I really like the look of say ...a brown vest and a blue blazer or shirt. I am interested in other color combinations.....
Finally there is a benefit from being short when buying clothes! All my waistcoats fit me perfectly but it is nigh impossible for me to find the correct sleave leangth.
Indeed ... I'm 5'2", 110-120lbs ... finding any clothes that doesn't make look like a 12 year old at 43 is difficult ... not impossible, but with a limited income, custom suits is a thing I can only dream of ... hence finding waistcoats/vests that fit is an extra benifit ... although I lost my last job for various reasons, I walked into the interview in a broiling hot day with wearing just a dry cleaned vest, dress shirt and tie, and well fitting chinos, with mirror polished dress shoes ... and got the job ... So yes, if you are a shorty like me, a well-fitting, pressed waistcoat/vest, combined with a decent shirt and tie, is a must ... Edit: I sympathise with buying shirts ... I always have to have mine pre-altered before delivery, as my arm length isn't standard with my neck size ...
All suit jacket i tried on is 1 inch longer than what i need :(( that feel just suck. I can get it tailored but it cost so much ... lucky for me my mother is a tailor but i have to wait so long to come back home ...
For workmen, needed protection but in hotter weather is why Cowboys have usually worn vests, especially leather vests. It’s also a great way to hide a pistol, specially when wearing a shoulder harness for your pistol. Finally, Many leather vests have hidden pockets for smaller pistol.
Bravo, really good and informative video. I'm a longtime subscriber and am glad to see excellent material being continuously made with a constant rise in quality. Keep it up, Antonio. Cheers!
I loved this Vid Antonio. I just purchased a vest in our local small men's clothing store. It fits exactly like you advise in this video. because of your video I am going to keep it and wear with confidence. Thanks.
This is a great video. Vests are perhaps my favorite topic. I own one and I love the look though even after having had it custom-fit I still find it something of a challenge to pull off.
Real Men Real Style Oh I do my best. The problem is, I'm not quite the right shape for a vest. I'm close enough that it's worth keeping at it, but they're always too snug here and too loose there. Even after four alterations, my favorite vest has a few places like that, and my tailor says there's nothing more he can do about them. No one really notices, but I know, and that does sap the ol' confidence a bit. But I keep at it!
I really like the look of a vest with a suit. It just looks so classy. However, I wore casual wool vest has a kid in Alaska and it was completely functional has well has giving me a unique look. They really tided my hickory shirts in with my pants :)
Just bought a Etro Vest (Price was about 500$ , WAY to much but hey it looks super cool :)) Thanks for the interesting facts and tips, keep up the awesome work.
Well..... I was hoping for more 'how to wear it' advice than the history of it..... With the suit for formal, with jeans and a button up for casual, color or pattern mix and match? Things like that....... Do you have that video out there?
A few questions. Where is a good place to purchase vests or who is a good relatively inexpensive manufacturer of vests? Another question, I have a vest with a back adjuster but it only seems to adjust the lower back, where can I get more narrow vests or do you have suggestions for places to take clothing like vests to for alterations? Thank you to anyone who can help me
Hey Antonio, what do you think about "orphaned" vests? For example, i have a 3 piece suit and i didn't want to wear the coat cause I'm living in a tropical country and it's really warm and humid. Everyone seems to think that this is a big no-no especially if the vest is not self-backed
ok I have a question. While watching a series I noticed a waist coat with Lapels and I really thought it looked nice and formal. Do you have an opinion on this type of waist coat? Great vid by the way and I also subscribed too.
How do you feel about women who like to wear vests/ties/suits? Is it unwomanly or fashion forward? (I'm asking since your a man with style and seem like a true gentleman) Great video as usual btw. :)
A vest is a must have it's universal it can be worn dressy or casual I don't even wear a suit without a vest.my fashion trendy is a casual look vest denim jeans gingham shirt knit tie archer boots or dress boots
I always wear suspenders with a waistcoat/vest, so I'm curious: does the color of the suspenders have to match the color of your pants or the color of your waistcoat? I wear my vests with the same color as my blazer and the pants are a different color.
I've noticed that some vets have the same fabric all around, while on other, the back is a silk fabric like the lining. Why is this? How do you use each different type of vest? Is it simply for warmth, or is there more to it? Can I wear a silk backed vest without a jacket? Thank you!
Hey Antonio love your videos I feel like I'm always discovering a new one if if it's from 3 years ago. I hope you see this because I love how you push the interchangeable wardrobe and it is great on maximizing your wear out of your clothing and after watching this I really want to start to incorporate a vest or to but I was wondering how would you do this with different slacks and if I could wear this with odd jacket and trourser combination and not look like I'm doing to much and coming off kinda clowny. I basically want to know the best way to introduce this item into my interchangeable wardrobe. just so you know what I have blazer have a navy blue, khaki, grey (with stripes) and black trousers mostly khakis and 3 navy and one black and one grey and 3 off whitish. I also have 2 suits one navy blue and one charcoal grey both in pin stripe. but ya so maybe a new video on adding the vest into your interchangeable would be cool just some tips on what look nice together you really got me like blazer I find reasons to wear them and get many compliments and I feel great in them another thing I wondered was can you wear an odd vest trourser and jacket combination and how would you do that?????
I want to wear my light to medium gray vest out but not sure what color shirt and pants to wear. I have black, dark charcoal and light gray with subtle pin strips slacks. I have tons of shirts from dark blue to light blue, red, burgundy, green and black, unfortunately no white. What color shirt and slacks should I wear? I was thinking about a dark blue shirt with grey and brown vertical strips, charcoal slacks and a light gray vest, black shoes and belt? Would this work or should I wear a lighter shirt? Any other suggestions? I am very new to wearing vest to be casual but still look good. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hey Antonio. I'm in construction, and in this video around the 3:00 minute mark is a vest I am very interested in. do you have any info on that vest or maybe a brand name?
It seems to my uneducated eye, that a longer vest 1 or 2 inches), wouldn't look all that much worse, but still have the sliming effect. I usually wear a regular, but I had to recently purchase a long one instead. Im no 65 y/o runway model, but I think it looks ok to me.
hello Antonio do you think it's acceptible for a jong man to wear a vest casualy like just with some darkwash jeans and a white or black shirt with rolled up sleeves?
Hello Antonio, thank you for a lot of great videos. Very helpfull! I have a quick question for you. what colour vests could I use together with my navy / dark navy suit? Think that a matching navy vest will be too much, so I would like to know what odd vest colours can supplement the navy colours.! looking forward to hearing from you..
Hi .. great video ... i am a big fan by the way . so. my question is .. can i wear a 5 button vest (buttoned up ) under a lab-coat (white coat) ?? with and without a tie

Great video. Still two questions lingering: 1. How do you match vests with trousers (same colour/fabric). 2. Do you leave the lower button open?
Very nice video!

Very good piece of advice about vests. Though it's a dated video, nevertheless, useful! Thanks!
I find the extra strap in the back hard to maintain. Is it ok if it just hangs?
For workmen, needed protection but in hotter weather is why Cowboys have usually worn vests, especially leather vests. It’s also a great way to hide a pistol, specially when wearing a shoulder harness for your pistol. Finally, Many leather vests have hidden pockets for smaller pistol.

I have experienced the vests being too short myself and I sometimes try to compensate by rising my trousers...
MegaTravianer Don't compensate - just find a better vest :)
Great tips. I am going to have one made soon to wear in hot weather and still add a bit of style without over-heatig. Thanks for sharing.
+Jim D You're welcome Jim!
YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT great tips
I loved this Vid Antonio. I just purchased a vest in our local small men's clothing store. It fits exactly like you advise in this video. because of your video I am going to keep it and wear with confidence. Thanks.
Mark Hoffman awesome - glad to know that people like you use the information I put out. thanks!
What about belt vs. Braces? I understood that a three piece suit/vest is mever worn with a belt. And the bottom button should always be undone

Nice informative video. Any ideas on where to buy though?
Should vests match trouser color like a suit or contrast like a sports jacket? Does it matter?
You look better with your hair grown out. Good job on updating your style.
I really like the look of a vest with a suit. It just looks so classy. However, I wore casual wool vest has a kid in Alaska and it was completely functional has well has giving me a unique look. They really tided my hickory shirts in with my pants :)

Well..... I was hoping for more 'how to wear it' advice than the history of it..... With the suit for formal, with jeans and a button up for casual, color or pattern mix and match? Things like that....... Do you have that video out there?
great mixture of talking, pictures and graphics Antonio
Stanford Crane Appreciate it sir!
Picked up a forest green corduroy vest in Italy. Brown shoes & belt, dark jeans. Not sure about shirt & jacket color.
Can peak lapel waistcoat be combined with notch lapel blazer?
What about a “bit of a belly” and luv handles? I’m also fond of flat caps, could a coordinated vest work with a flat cap?
Hey, Antonio! Another killer video! I wanted to know your opinion on vests being worn with denims. Especially dark coloured denims . Cheers!
Varun Vibhakar We're creating an article on that!
I love this video. Especially since I feel it's a classical bartender look, and that's what I am working toward becoming. ^^
Can I wear the vest with a well-fitted t-shirt?

Omar Mahmood Thanks!
Any information on men's corset vest?
Should you button the bottom button on the vest? I see that some do and some don't. Do you know for sure?
Well Never mind I see on your link that the bottom button should be not buttoned. That's what I thought.
Mixmastermez :)
What do you think about vest with shorts?
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing
ok I have a question. While watching a series I noticed a waist coat with Lapels and I really thought it looked nice and formal. Do you have an opinion on this type of waist coat? Great vid by the way and I also subscribed too.
I have a Grey suit. What do you think will be a suitable color vest to complement the suit?
arun prakash This article from Gentleman's Gazette should help: www.gentlemansgazette.com/men-waistcoats-odd-vest-how-to-wear/
Thanks Antonio . The article was really helpful.
Hi!
So, if my chest size is 38 inches, what should be the chest size of the waistcoat? Please advise.
How do you feel about women who like to wear vests/ties/suits? Is it unwomanly or fashion forward? (I'm asking since your a man with style and seem like a true gentleman) Great video as usual btw. :)
Ana Chantal Why not - in fact the women I see do this pull it off better than many men!
How well would a brown herringbone vest or a blackwatch (black, blue, and green) tartan vest work with a navy blue suit?
A vest is a must have it's universal it can be worn dressy or casual I don't even wear a suit without a vest.my fashion trendy is a casual look vest denim jeans gingham shirt knit tie archer boots or dress boots

I always wear suspenders with a waistcoat/vest, so I'm curious: does the color of the suspenders have to match the color of your pants or the color of your waistcoat? I wear my vests with the same color as my blazer and the pants are a different color.
Does the colour of the vest has to match your pants & coat?
Can you make a video about wearing a vest with jeans? thank you.
6:55 where it's start helpful. Thank for the info
A tip for to short waistcoats is actually buying the extra long size, even when normal size fits you.
Thanks.
also great for pro dancers, cover sweat. look clasic and easy to lead that way.
Ido Wald That's right!

If a have a dark grey vest with(two)pockets that go below the waist, is it okay to wear a single pocket square with it ?
Antonio, I have some real nice dress shirts but are short sleeves. Is it stylish to wear a vest with them? In the summer time of course.

Hi Sir. Is wearing a knitted vest appropriate?
Excellent video mister!
Francisco Arcos You welcome sir!
i love my tweed waistcoat but id like to were it with my jeans would it work
It seems to my uneducated eye, that a longer vest 1 or 2 inches), wouldn't look all that much worse, but still have the sliming effect.
My recent vintage pocket watch addiction has made me a vest consumer.
