Pete! Good sir, I had done this to great success in the past.. I moved and am finally behind the iPad again and now I can't seem to make this trick for the drums work.. did something change in an update??? I'm so bummed out lol
It is also possible to do this trick in an already made project, just make sure to have all other tracks above the audio track, except for the drummer track you want to turn into a regular midi track, then do the copy part of the audio clip and drummer track, delete the drummer track, and create two or more blank midi or drum tracks, make sure the play marker is at the beginning, and tap the blank part of the audio track, and tap the paste that pops up, the drummer track data should now be pasted on to one of the blank midi/drum tracks that you created.
I may be missing a couple of steps but I do have a couple of questions. 1: when you say to “copy the part of the audio clip,” do you mean the drummer track that you want to have copied and that is already placed? And 2: I put the drummer track on top of all the audio tracks, copied the first drummer track that was placed down in a separate region. Then pasted it in the drummer track that is above the other audio tracks, but it didn’t show up as a midi instead it literally just copy and pasted the previous track from before. Is there anything I’m missing?also let me know if you need clarification
I’ve been experimenting with a few different ways to change and augment the GB drummer, but this is a real game-changer. Many thanks to Binnie for opening up this new world to us on iOS, and thanks to you Pete for spreading the word.
I put this idea on the back burner about two years ago.. I remember you doing a tutorial on it so I figured I’d give it another try..following complete instructions this time..thanks again Pete..it really worked this time
Yeah. I’ve done it a few times now and it’s easier every time. Just keep that dummy audio track handy. You can even then bring the drums back in to the original project.
When you selected all of the bass drums and others using a rubber band to strike over the entire song, there’s an easier way to select every drum hit. If you just hit the bass drum button all the way to your left, it will quickly select every bass drum hit. The same with the snare, Tom’s, cymbals and hats. Just click their icon and all hits become highlighted. Then you can cut and paste them into a separate tracks. That part I did know how to do. I just couldn’t figure out how to convert the drummer groves into MIDI and ma so thankful to finally know how to. It was always possible in the desktop version, there was just no simple instructions for the IOS.
Wow. Now i've learned two things today. :-) This still works on GB 2.3.11 by following these steps: i) Add an audio track to project with drummer in it, record a bar of whatever you want. ii) Select the audio track and the drummer track and copy them both by triggering the copy menu on the drummer track iii) Create a new project and add an audio track and record a bar of whatever you want iv) Add a midi drummer track... green not orange. v) set song length to automatic vi) click on the midi drummer track and paste = Midified drummer track, yay!
...and by 3:18, I went to try it, and it works. This is so ‘back door’, it reminds me of that thing where US govt agents used to be able to trick any petrol pump into dispensing petrol without paying. Someone buried that for their own convenience, now get ready for it’s removal, because someone uses this to rip a load of Apple drum patterns. It won’t be me, I’m just glad to be able to tweak them. Bluebird is a good kit choice, you probably know, because it has at least got a drum element everywhere there’s a midi entry. The empty/extra drum slots in ‘edit’ now make sense, it’s for this sort of purpose. Good one, Binnie or whomever, and thanks for sharing Pete - for however long it’s allowed to work! Ok, curiosity sated, I continue to watch...!
Just found out this a great way to transform Smart Guitar auto play patterns into other instruments as well! Used the method to paste a Smart Guitar track into a keyboard one and it works like a charm. Thank you!!
Thank you I like the virtual drummer but was annoyed that I couldnt change the levels of the individual sounds , now that is much easier and possible 👍
I got to try this. It will change my life if it works. GarageBand in my desktop allows the drummer tracks to convert to MIDI pretty easily, but I have never been able to figure out how to do it on my iPad in GarageBand IOS. I don’t usually use GarageBand on the desktop and prefer to open my iPad pieces right into Logic because that’s has more flexibility and better instrument samples. The GarageBand drummers have some pretty great groves you can tweak in, but there are always some cymbal accents I need or some other change to customize the drums for my songs. I have never known how to convert the drummers to MIDI so I can edit? Sometimes I like to break up the drums and cymbals to different tracks so I can EQ them separately, so this will save me a ton of time! Thanks! The problem is that I prefer to use my iPad GarageBand to write music on the fly, like a music notepad and it is amazing just how powerful and flexible GarageBand IOS actually is. I’ll play pieces for my wife from the iPad GarageBand and she says, “that was done on your iPad? It sounds finished.”. It’s that good, in a tiny iPad. Of course the real magic comes in Logic. I’m an old fart, who came up in music in the 70s and 80s, so to record a demo, you needed to book time in a multimillion dollar recording studio, with huge 4 inch tape and 20’ long mixing consoles. Now, you can nearly create a song as clean and vibrant as those millions of dollars worth of equipment could do? It’s just amazing to have a recording studio in a notepad.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Yes, I like to say that we "live in the future" with all the tech we have these days! Hope you have fun having more flexibility with your drums.
That is really cool! So as well as individual levels and EQ you can add individual FX and even change out drums from different kits! Thanks for this, Pete!
You are full of interesting tricks mate !! If one day i get garageband and a mac i will be fully aware what to use !! you are precious pete !! i learnned so much on those new tools by listening to you .
The revised Aemyn method worked to a point running the latest version of GB on an 2021 iPad Pro (I tried multiple times using the original Binnie method, but never able to get either MIDI or audio data to come across and tracks were blank after I hit paste). While I was able to get the MIDI data to populate using the Aemyn method, the rhythm/beats from the original GaragaBand drummer did not translate accurately to the MIDI tracks. I used the "Gavin" - Skinny Tie GB drummer and tried a bunch of different MIDI kits to try and at least match the sound of the MIDI drums tracks ("Bluebird" seemed to sound the closest). I also used some 1/8th and 1/16th note "light swing" on specific sections of the GB pattern and tried quantizing those sections in the MIDI converted kit accordingly, but it didn't have the same feel and the MIDI version was heavily quantized overall (and again, some of the beats were missing and/or out of place). I guess if wanted to try and get a closer MIDI version of the GB Drummer, I would need to slice up the audio from the GB drummer to isolate the individual drums/percussion pieces on separate rack as much possible and then use this as a reference to edit the MIDI data drums on separate tracks to match. At best, in my experience with this particular GB drummer track, the conversion represents a starting point at best. I do appreciate that it does this at all which is still pretty great!
@@PeteJohnsMusic In order to get 100% accurate MIDI data translation of a Drummer track created in Garageband, I import the project into Logic and use the "Convert to MIDI Region" command. Logic will also let you switch it back with "Convert to Drummer Region". If only they would add this feature to Garageband (clearly Drummer tracks are designed to work this way).
Wow, it was fun.. I was looking for a way to do that but on the computer version.. so this just gave me the idea of trying to copy paste from virtual drummer to basic drummer area.. it WORKED perfectly and I don't know why I didn't try that earlier.. But just thaaanks 🙏
Great trick! Saw this video a while back and didn’t comment, but I am commenting now to tell EVERYONE: you can use this trick to convert smart drums into editable midi too! I don’t often use them, but once I did, and it records as midi but you can’t edit! This trick also works on them.
Invaluable trick! I've been needing this for a long time and had no idea how to do it. I wonder why it's apparently undocumented... for what little documentation there is anyway! Thanks!

Thanks so much for all these videos you have created, I am a big Garageband user fan for it's lofi sound and user friendly platform & your videos have saved me time and time again when I get a bit stuck. Super helpful community you have created! Garageband should give you a job haha 🙏 Keep up the good work!
Hey Pete, thanks for sharing the amazing tip! As of October 6 2023, it still works! 😀 I have a question: I liked one particular drummer sounds (Leah). Where can I find Leah’s drumset sounds on Garageband? I want to be able to individually master each individual element of the set (e.g., bass box, snare, shaker etc.), but I can’t seem to find this option. I don’t really like the sound of my beat in other libraries of Beat Sequencer. Thanks in advance! 👍
Howdy! So there was a list of son the drummers and their kits in the past, but they’ve added so many I haven’t kept up! Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord. Or even the GarageBand Users Facebook group?
Thank you!!!!! I had to add several tracks before it would work, but I think that might correlate to how far down the track was in my original session.
Nice work Pete (and Binnie)! 👍👍👍 An extremely useful capability has finally made its way from the Mac version of GB to iOS - well, kind of anyway. We’ll take it! 😄
Yup, agree Marc! A bit like the flexible tempo. It’s clearly possible but they only let you do it via Music Memos. I fear they may “fix” this “bug” soon though...
@@PeteJohnsMusic it surely is. Now if you watch one of my videos at hit the pause exactly at 2’19” in you’ll are why I have a great deal of apps to get to grips with in my fledgling channel. th-cam.com/video/ITWhIYK6iak/w-d-xo.html Cheers. Lee
@@PeteJohnsMusic it means I can get a cool track going that follows what I’ve played. Then export the midi so I can use it in EZDrummer on my laptop!!!! The world just opened up a bit 😂
Alas not really. There are some third party apps that can do it but not natively within GarageBand. I’m working on an option for this and will share if I can find an easy way to do it.
@@PeteJohnsMusic only option I can think of is to put each drum into its own track. Then either treat them in the app or even export them all as separate audio files and mess around with them with plugins, even use drumagog maybe in Auria. But.... that’s a lot of work and takes away from the brilliant simplicity of GB. I think I’ll carry on with just what you’ve shown us above 😂😂
Awesome, super helpful... been wishing I could do this for ages! Actually remember you bemoaning the fact you didn’t have a method of doing this in iOS in an earlier video, so a great tip from your friend 👌🏻✌🏻 Now I’m going to have to re-edit all my tracks from last year though 😅
This is great. I’m having trouble getting the newly separated drum tracks back into my main song. When I try to paste the new snare-only track into my master project, for example, it overwrites my keys track. :( Any suggestions or tips?
@@PeteJohnsMusic yes pete I being subscribed to ur channel a few month ago already all ur videos are a good help for me thanks and keep making many more helpful videos thanks again.
Hi Pete great video, is there any way to get more variety of cymbals in a drum track like a China or splash? Really wanting them in a heavier track mix but garageband has no sounds for them.
Hey there. So there’s a way to access some additional kit pieces in some drum kits. This video will help you with this - th-cam.com/video/mgBT-oNalRE/w-d-xo.html
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍 And big shout out to Binnie who discovered this method.
Only the velocity. You’d need to put on a separate track and use a pitch change plugin if you want to change the pitch. th-cam.com/video/KsiUWbTt4S4/w-d-xo.html
Pete Johns You actually don't have to create a new project, just do the first step where you copy the audio and drummer track, then delete the drummer track and create about 3 normal drum tracks, then paste the copy part, and the drummer track should get pasted on the second drum track, then just delete the two blank tracks that you don't need. ps. don't delete the audio track, or the trick won't work.
Hello Pete ! Thanks again for your usefull videos! Do you know if there’s a way to transform tracks from virtual instruments, like strings of guitars to midi ? I know we can play all instruments in with the midi piano by changing the instrument. But if we want to use the paterns generated by the virtual instruments and modify them using another instrument, it dosen’t seem to work. Thanks in advance!
Hey there my friend. So, I haven’t found an easy way to do this, but there are audio to MIDI converters out there, even websites that can do this. Might be a topic I should cover in the future.
Hi Pete! Did you figure out how to convert audio to midi? I would like to sing a melody and then change from audio track to midi track so I can “play” it on a keyboard.
This is an important feature I’ve been trying to learn how to do for a while! Apple really needs to bring this up to date! This is a common feature I use with logic Pro X end it really messes up my workflow to not be able to switch between drum sounds on one midi file or convert to midi. Is it possible to copy and paste inside the same project? I am stuck with a project that I am almost finished with but my drummer track claps only need to be louder! How do I do that?
Hey Pete love your channel . I want to thank you for all your help with garageband. I have used this technique with some basic drum parts and it worked great. On my last project, i had more complex editing in the virtual drummer. For some reason it refuses to paste the files to the new project so I can’t get the midi files. Any idea why this is happening? keep up the great work,
Not sure sorry. Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
Thanks Pete. After watching the link you provided in your vid, I tried opening many more drum tracks before pasting. then it pasted. ( 5 tracks ). After this I placed the midi in my original project and started getting bad artifacts on other channels. I thing I'm pushing my Ipad air with the M1 chip a liitle too hard. I'm running multiple guitar syms a well as midi. What is the maximum number of tracks you've been able to run in Garageband IOS ? Thanks for replying. Your channel has helped me so much in undrstanding and using Garageband to make much better recordings and songs. Thank you ! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK !
hi Pete connecting an electronic drum kit (kat3) with garageband, the sounds are not recorded correctly, every sound plays with the wrong pad, could you advise me how I can do a right mapping to synchronize the sounds in their place? thank you 😊🙏
Hey there. Unfortunately GarageBand doesn’t slow you to change the MIDI assignment of the pads. Unless you can change these on the drums side, you’re out of luck I’m afraid - at least with GarageBand.
With macos GB there is an easier way. Copy a section of a virtual drummer, paste it in an instrument track (it'll appear as MIDI notes but sound weird). Copy the section again, this time from the instrument track, select a drummer track and paste it there. Now it's editable as MIDI ;-)
Hey Pete I can’t seem to get it to work on iPhone GarageBand :( EDIT: IT WORKS, GarageBand God Pete comes through again with another game changing trick!

This is amazing. Can’t believe it works on iOS Garageband. Thank you so much👍👍
Pretty darn cool isn’t it?
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks so much, Pete, I'll look them up! 😁 Keep up the amazing work! 😀👍🔥
thank you pete you always have our backs! so excited i can finally mix each drum track seperately :)
Pretty cool ain’t it?!
Strange, beautiful, and useful!
👍😎🙏
That’s a very useful trick, thank you very much, Pete!
Very welcome my friend. Great concept from Binmie here’
Thank you!!!!! I had to add several tracks before it would work, but I think that might correlate to how far down the track was in my original session.
Yeah right? Glad you got it happening.
Great. Another game changing tutorial. Thank you, Pete!
Isn’t this little hack awesome? Much love to Binnie for the methodz
Nice work Pete (and Binnie)! 👍👍👍 An extremely useful capability has finally made its way from the Mac version of GB to iOS - well, kind of anyway. We’ll take it! 😄
Right?!?! 😄
Damn I’ve been searching for this. Thanks Pete.
🤘😎
This proves that GB iOS has that possibility, just like GB Mac. Apple just makes us jump through hoops to do it. That's my opinion anyway.
Yup, agree Marc! A bit like the flexible tempo. It’s clearly possible but they only let you do it via Music Memos.
I fear they may “fix” this “bug” soon though...
@@PeteJohnsMusic Either that or that’s the shape of things to come... 🤔
Hello Pete. Just letting you know this “trick” still works. Figured you may want to know. Such a great option for more control over the drum track. 😎🤘
Yeah cool! Thanks had heard the at it was not working at some point. So glad it’s still a happening thing.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Sure thing. It works but had to do some editing. Totally worth the effort though.
Excellent Pete. Can't wait to use it. Cheers. Lee
It’s super cool isn’t it??
@@PeteJohnsMusic it surely is. Now if you watch one of my videos at hit the pause exactly at 2’19” in you’ll are why I have a great deal of apps to get to grips with in my fledgling channel. th-cam.com/video/ITWhIYK6iak/w-d-xo.html Cheers. Lee
Oh and I gave you a credit at the end of my first video...
So helpful!!!! Thanks so much

Pete thanks so much mate!
Very welcome my friend.
🤯 this is awesome. Thanks for the video!
You’re very welcome. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. And big thanks to my friend Binnie for sharing the original method.
Thank you for this
Very welcome. And a big thanks to Bonnie for the original hack.
Game changer there! Thanks so much for sharing👍
Very welcome Chandlers! Finally got back to reply to this one after I released your account from the Studio Live Today prison! 😄
Thank you!!! It really works. Do you know how to export the project to midi file?
Unfortunately GarageBand only support MIDI import and not export - th-cam.com/video/FoabwNwrcMY/w-d-xo.html
Whoa!!!!
I’ve been dreaming about being able to do this 😂😂
Nice one Pete
Pretty cool ain’t it??
@@PeteJohnsMusic it means I can get a cool track going that follows what I’ve played. Then export the midi so I can use it in EZDrummer on my laptop!!!!
The world just opened up a bit 😂
@@PeteJohnsMusic it’s ace. The only snag is I can’t find a way to copy the midi to outside of GB. Is that possible at all?
Haha!!! I hear you. I literally responded to a comment saying “no you can’t do this” just this week.
This is great. I’m having trouble getting the newly separated drum tracks back into my main song. When I try to paste the new snare-only track into my master project, for example, it overwrites my keys track. :(
Any suggestions or tips?
Make sure you’re pasting in to a new track or a drum track. studiolivetoday.com/GarageBand
You the best Pete 👌

Brilliant. Had to test it out immediately
Pretty gosh darn awesome ain’t it?
@@PeteJohnsMusic yep!!
Great video dude. 👊🏾Do you think this method could work with wave files?
It doesn’t sorry because WAV files don’t have any MIDI information in them.
Thanks, Pete. Another useful tip. I will try this out...
It is indeed super useful already in my experience.
Hi Pete great video, is there any way to get more variety of cymbals in a drum track like a China or splash? Really wanting them in a heavier track mix but garageband has no sounds for them.
Hey there. So there’s a way to access some additional kit pieces in some drum kits. This video will help you with this - th-cam.com/video/mgBT-oNalRE/w-d-xo.html
thank you very much.... so helpful

And big shout out to Binnie who discovered this method.
Is it possible to adjust the notes of the drums, for example with a piano roll, or is it only possible to change volunicity
Only the velocity. You’d need to put on a separate track and use a pitch change plugin if you want to change the pitch.
th-cam.com/video/KsiUWbTt4S4/w-d-xo.html
does it work for other instruments, like smart strings to regular strings?
I just tested it, it does also work with smart instruments to regular instruments, so now I have a piano playing the same part as my smart strings 🤣
Oh wow! Yes, this could open up a heap more options. Better get experimenting and recording. Guitar to keyboard tracks too? 🤔
@@Ponk_80 If anyone can figure out how to paste it into another sequencer they’ll be a total hero... 👌
Nice.
This is awesome! Good video and find. Gonna try this now
It’s a bit of a game changer as I love Drummer but sometimes just want to tweak a fill or add an extra kick. Now I can!
@@PeteJohnsMusic it totally works pete. Thank you so much. Definitely a game changer for sure! So excited. It’s inspiring too.
Thank you Pete, I will continue to check how to make it!
Hi Pete! Did you figure out how to convert audio to midi? I would like to sing a melody and then change from audio track to midi track so I can “play” it on a keyboard.
Very cool workaround 😃
Binnie is the man! Hope they don’t “fix” this in the next version! 🤨
@@PeteJohnsMusic exactly what I was thinking. But apple seem to take forever to fix stuff, so hopefully we’ll be safe for a while
This is an important feature I’ve been trying to learn how to do for a while!
Yeah you might need to split them out using this method and isolate the claps to turn up.
Thanks Pete! You have provided the missing link!
Excellent! Glad it helped.
Hey Pete, how can you save the midi drum track to export into another project?
Unfortunately GarageBand iOS doesn’t have an export function.
@@PeteJohnsMusic I actually did it! I just have to figure out what I did!
that’s amazing
this is gonna help lots 👍
Right? Genius method from Binnie here.
hi Pete connecting an electronic drum kit (kat3) with garageband, the sounds are not recorded correctly, every sound plays with the wrong pad, could you advise me how I can do a right mapping to synchronize the sounds in their place? thank you 😊🙏
Hey there. Unfortunately GarageBand doesn’t slow you to change the MIDI assignment of the pads. Unless you can change these on the drums side, you’re out of luck I’m afraid - at least with GarageBand.
@@PeteJohnsMusic in fact , I bave ti try with SampleTank 😉☺️
With macos GB there is an easier way. Copy a section of a virtual drummer, paste it in an instrument track (it'll appear as MIDI notes but sound weird). Copy the section again, this time from the instrument track, select a drummer track and paste it there. Now it's editable as MIDI ;-)
Nice. Yes, a lot of things are indeed a little easier on a Mac.
Hey Pete I can’t seem to get it to work on iPhone GarageBand :(
EDIT: IT WORKS, GarageBand God Pete comes through again with another game changing trick!
Nice!!
