    Thank you for This!
    I hooked my iPad up to my Alesis Nitro Mesh via a usb cable directly. And followed along and was rewarded with the ability to record my drums.
    It does parse the sounds to the wrong instruments at times but some kits in my Alesis seem to match perfectly.

      Do you have a second crash cymbal? And if you do… does it work? Bc for me the second crash is just silent and I’m trying to figure out how to fix that.

    • @ZaxDrumsandGolf
      @ZaxDrumsandGolf ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ZenLord If you haven't got it figured out yet you have to change the midi notes from the second crash to the same as the other one. Unfortunately then you have to same crashes but you can use it then.

    This is exactly what I was looking for. I want to record marching drum parts, but haven’t been able to find tutorials on how to create multiple tracks for snares, toms and bass drums. Is there a way to record multiple tracks of the same drum, or of multiple snare drums, to replicate the fact you have multiple snare players at the same time?

    A problem I am having is that the hi-hat pedal is like all other pads - in that if I push it down, the pedal makes the open hi-hat sound and if I lift my foot it does nothing. Then with the hi-hat itself just always plays the closed sound. I've tried mapping both to the same pad number, setting the pedal to 00 on the drums themselves (so in a way trying to unassign as a pad) but nothing works. Anyone else have this issue and know how to fix?
    EDIT: I have noticed that the 3 states of the hi-hat each have a MIDI number assigned to them. So you have one for hi-hat with foot off pedal, then if I press the pedal the number changes for use with the closing sound, and one more for hitting the hit hat with the pedal closed; never noticed that before. Hope that helps anyone.

    • @MrNoahFTW
      @MrNoahFTW 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I eventually made the same discovery. On my Roland TD-1 I had to change the signals associated to a couple of the Pads. Annoyingly on this module you cannot have custom pads, so even though most kits all register with the appropriate pads, there are a couple off kits where the floor tom doesn't register, and nearly all of the electronic pad sets are missing most sounds. But if I wanted to correct the settings for one of these kits It wouldn't work the the majority of the others.

    I have two drum kits. This is a Yamaha DTXPlorer, as in the video, and another small Yamaha DD 65. So I noticed that there are no problems with DD65 at all. GarageBand immediately detects it and all the reels are in their places. You can even play live. And DTXplorer sucks completely. On PC, you can train each drum to the appropriate sound in Addictive Drums and save it as a preset. But on the iPhone and iPad, I have not found such a program, alas =(

      Hey thx for watching!, to do that just connect a stereo cable from the outputs L and R out of your drum module and into the iPad/iPhone. Open a Garageband project with the "Audio recorder" track and select the "instrument" button at the bottom.Shuld be good to record the audio from the drum module sounds now, not the midi.

      The mac needs a driver to install to see the drum module, and this depends on the kit you're using. Roland edrums there are driver packages to install on the mac and PC to see the kits, once thats installed, it works great.

    How do you map the MIDI to your drum kit so you don’t have to drag and drop every time you record?

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      unfortunately, if you switch the drumkit in GB, the midi may change. so best way is to use the same kit, and program the edrum module to always send the same midi into GB when played. most drum modules offer the ability to edit the midi not sent out.

  • @dylanjastle
    @dylanjastle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Once you have your MIDI data mapped in the garageband project, does it remember it when you record other takes on that track? And when you’re monitoring from the headphone jack on an iPad or MacBook, does it monitor the mapped sounds after mapping it that first time? I also didn’t see a link to your other vid on getting the sounds from your electric kit loaded as a sample pack into garageband. Would LOVE to see that. Thanks for the vid! I think this will get me up and running

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey, so after testing, GarageBand does not remember the mapping during the same session or in any other session. it keeps the mapping you've set after editing it to the proper drums, but not when recording again. each time you record, you need to move the midi hits to the proper drum mapping. monitoring will always work regardless as long as you press the headphone symbol on the track to monitor it.

    • @snicjelmo3
      @snicjelmo3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DarkRoastRecording Can't you simply adjust the note number of each pad on the drums to map correctly to the receiving notes on Garageband? That's what I do. I also found an app that works with garageband and supports MIDI drums called Beat Machine, which has it's own MIDI receiver tuner. So instead of configuring your drums to the app, you can configure the app to your drums, and you can assign any drum sound to any of the 16 pad numbers, so for me I prefer 2 toms, 2 crashes and either a cowbell or ride - I assign toms 1 and 3 as toms, tom 2 as the ride and the 2 cymbals as different crashes. Best of all it's free and (afaik) app purchase and ad free too. And as mentioned, Garageband recognises it as an inter-app connection and imports it as a wav so no need for mapping the notes in GB after recording.

    • @dylanjastle
      @dylanjastle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Ellmore I ended up picking up an electric drum set and I did just that. I adjusted the output midi notes on the drum controller to line up with what garageband needed to receive. The strategy in this video isn’t very practical for recording drums for a whole song. You need to hear the right drum sounds being triggered as you’re playing them.
      How are the acoustic drum sample packs in Beat Machine? Do they use *different* sound samples depending the velocity of the hit? Or do they just play the same sound but quieter? I’ve been looking for a way to not be stuck with the drum sounds in garageband for iOS, but the ‘drummer’ instrument in GB seems to be the only compatible instrument that uses moderately realistic samples and triggering for drums. If I was in Logic on a Mac, there are tons of options for realistic sounding drums beyond the stock Logic/Garageband drums.

    • @DarkRoastRecording

      It could be a different drum kit being used. Done the kits have slightly different midi notes. Open a keyboard instrument and play the drums to see what the note is that’s messed up and check your ekit if you can change the midi note the snare send out. May need to check your ekit manual

      yes, I am just using the edrums with a midi cable to the M-Audio uno to USB into camera connector kit, into ipad. The irig midi is just another midi device like the maudio uno. another person suggested recording the edrums on a keyboard/piano track, then copying that midi to a new drums instrument track and editing the hits there if your ekit doesnt send the same midi notes as Garageband recognizes. just a good tip.

    Great video, first thank you very much. But I have a problem, I have same drum kit Yamaha dtxplorer and when I tried to record with midi-usb cable on garageband like you, some (nearly all) notes are too long on garageband. Actually when recording it seems normal but when I stop recording some notes goes to the end of the record. Sounds are fine but it becomes very hard to edit. If you have any idea, I would be great

    I have a different issue, I am trying to use my TD17-kvx to record drums on songs one of my bands sends me on garageband. the problem that I am having is that the hi hat is not triggering all the time on garageband. everything else works. I used to use my TD-6 connected the same way and it worked fine, only sometimes it would miss a note. Also not al the garageband drums kits work properly. some are not triggering the floor tom. so I can only use one of the GB kits at the moment. I have tried everything in the MIDI settings of the module to make the hi hat work. when I play the drums not connected to garageband everything works flawlessly and the hi hat triggers correctly. how can i fix this ? I have a need to use garageband with my phone or ipad. Any insight is appreaciated
    Set up
    TD17 -KVX midi out connected to Rig Duo, Iphone or ipad connected to iRig duo, headphones connected to IRig heaphone jack.
    I recorded several demo songs using this same set up with my older TD-6

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya, I hear ya man. GB has different midi mappings in different kits unfortunately, so you will get different sounds. I believe there is a page dominates online that maps out several of the popular gb kits, google garageband drum kits midi mapping and you should find it. I’m not sure about the hi hat issue though other than it may be related to the same issue as the different kits, sounds like it’s triggering a pedal control instead of a closed Hi hat for example

      @@DarkRoastRecording hey man, thanks for responding. even tho Ive been playing over 25 years am a total noob with midi and electrics. I googled it for weeks and couldnt find the right answer or answers that applied to mac. I finally gave in and contacted Roland , and lo and behold they gave me the solution.
      Its a mapping issue, they said this is common because GB and other softwares are not map right or what not.
      Anyhow here is the solution in case there are others I didnt even know what that other button did or that there were other menu settings. .. I would imagine this method would apply to all kits ...
      on the TD 17, I had the kit on and hooked to garageband open with a selected Kit......on the module I clicked the "other" button , this opened a menu I had never seen, then arrow down, this way you can select the MIDI mapping. They told me to change the edge one (the one that wasnt triggering) to 44. This matched the bow setting, and that did it. Since I was having the same problem with the open hi hat I set that one to 46 to match the bow and bingo, done.
      again, thansk so much for replyng, I'm going to google for that page you suggested as well.
      By the way , about 6 months ago i watched this video and it taught me about moving midi notes around, which helped fix other issues i was having before :)

      hey dude, your can plug in headphones direct to the iPad, but you won't hear the drums that aren't mapped properly as you play/record. that's why I used the headphone port on the dtxplorer instead and used another cable to play the click from GarageBand into the dtxplorer Aux input jack. also, you may not need the 4 port hub, but if GarageBand didn't recognize the midi to usb device from dtxplorer then you likely would need the hub. the hub changes the amps being drawn from the devices connected, and then the iPad will recognize the devices better.

      @DarkRoastRecording  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! Please subscribe if this helps you as well :). I was also using an iPad Air 2 in this video and didnt have latency. I suspect it's either an app is running in the background causing it to slow down, be sure to close all apps and just open GarageBand. Only other thing I can think of is ensuring that you are using the headphone output of the drums rather than the iPad. You could run a cable into the roland from the iPad and turn on monitoring on the track, then you'll get the feed from garageband into the roland to listen to with headphones on the Roland while you play.

      its just plug n play, there is no "setting" to "add instruments" or midi devices to GB. Just plug it in and start hitting. deoending on the GB kit you're using and the midi drums you have, you may need to adjust the midi note being sent on the drum module itself, and this can take some trial and error.

    So many 'out of date' videos explaining how to use external drum modules to trigger iPad iOS GB drums and none of them actually work (and if they do they require wires and adapters up the a** and don't work with USB C iPad's).
    iOS GB is basically junk software and not worth the bother anyway.
    Save yourself the hassle and just use a powered USB C out audio interface (with MIDI in/out) and connect it to macOS GB on a MacBook Air (using the USB C port). It will map perfectly and GB macOS, is far better software and the whole process is much easier to do (no need for adapters and other junk that just cost lots of money).
    iPad's no longer have lightning connectors and you can't just go USB B to USB C and expect it to work.

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, the later ipads use USB-C now. for those that only have an ipad however, there's no issue using a USB-C hub, many of which can be powered and have a 3.5mm headphone/mic jack. I have one of these and it works perfectly on my iPad pro 11 2nd gen in Logic Pro and Garageband
