  • Hola Amigees!
    We're so excited to share our murphy bed build with you all. We've updated our amazon shop with the murphy bed hardware (it's under $100) and the frame we build our of select pine 1x6s, 2 sheets of 1/2" birch plywood, 1 sheet of 1" birch plywood and several 2x2s. We've since added ikea bed slats to help cozy up the overall experiences on the bed. All in all, we LOVE the bed, we love the functionality of it, and we love the ease of use.
    If you have any specifics regarding the bed, please let us know as we are more than happy to help with insight, information, or any other way.
    Life is good.

    Hi friends! Thanks for coming back for another week of the build and finally some big changes are starting to shape up. We're completely hooked on the idea that a Murphy bed is the ONLY way to have a bed in a van. Links to the hardware and more can be found here: amazon.com/shop/tioaventurabus

      We love the idea of a murphy bed but we've built our bed around housing gravel and mountain bikes under our bed so we had to have a platform. Had we wanted entertaining space, I could see it being the best option, absolutley! Nice job!

      Yeah Murphy bed is what I've been planning to do. I've also been thinking when the bed is lifted up, could there be a slot for a table on the back to be put down.

    I love the murphy bed idea because being able to walk through seems like the best option! I would love the “freedom” that the space provides.

  • @BeyondYourDoorstep

    Looks like a great way to store your bed, gives you so much space when put away!

    • @mariajoseandchase
      @mariajoseandchase  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We were worried that having the bed on the wall would feel like it took away space, but it truly has given us extra space we wouldn't have utilized. Our solar is neatly tucked below and we've got so much upward space behind the bed with the shelves we've built.

    You can get marine mattress mats to help with air flow so you’re mattress doesn’t go mouldy, you may need to drill some air holes at the side too

    Thanks for sharing the hinge link. My " proprietary " hinge set came in today. I have been lifting my bed without spring help. These new hinges will be a back saver.

    • @mariajoseandchase
      @mariajoseandchase  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh man! This comment right here made my day. Glad the “proprietary Murphy system” could be of assistance. Remember, it took a long time, a ton of money, and a great deal of research & development (five minutes searching amazon) to get the set put together.
      No joke though, we love this spring kit and hope it goes together with ease for you.

    You have made a great Murphy bed, simple but effective, I have seen the finished build and it's epic. For the record it's 'the 5 second rule' and was widely discredited not long after we started to realise the danger of Lymes Disease...lol.

    My wife and I love your channel! I’m in the process of building a drawer system for my 4Runner. I’m going to utilize a kreg jig for pocket holes. At first I thought I needed the big $140 kit but you seem to be doing just fine with the jig and a face clamp. Thanks for giving me motivation!

    This Murphy bed idea is the best. It’s a combination of the space you get with the setup bed and the always ever ready bed you get with the fixed bed.

    Way to go with the murphy bed! I have to say the pocket hole jig is one of my favorite things ever! I was working on upper cabinets the last couple days and if it wasn't for the jig, there is no way I could have made cabinets so sturdy! Looking forward to seeing how your upper cabinets turn out!

    Seems like a great system. It answers some of my questions: I wanted a walk-through from the side door to the rear doors, but I didn't want to make and unmake my bed every day...
    I'm renovating my flat at the moment, so I will check this out for that purpose. Then later for the van. I'll watch how you are going and maybe I can 'steal' some more ideas! ;-))

  • @cherylcakes
    @cherylcakes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is genius! Do you mind sharing roughly how big your bed is? It doesn’t look full length (my partner and I are both very tall!) We had the same conundrum and decided build a fixed bed high up (like a bunk) over the existing u shaped sofa underneath that we used to have to pull out into the bed, so we have full height seating that sticks out and then short guests can fit under the bed 😂 or we go under if we’re lying around watching a film in the evening. It kinda works but isn’t perfect, your solution looks like it might be the one! 👌🏼

  • @poyakiani7883
    @poyakiani7883 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the lock-down would have taught me one lesson, i would remove the mattress from my work area ASAP😂😂😂. Everything seems perfect to me other than that, specially like the white balance and fish-eye effect on the video, brings the memories from good old 1970's (when i wasn't born yet!!).
    Keep it up amigos. You're doing great 👍👍👍

    • @mariajoseandchase
      @mariajoseandchase  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We finally took the bed out haha! As soon as we busted out the sander we knew it had to hang out in the house for a while. We're shooting in C-Log on our new camera, which is definitely a learning curve, but there are so many things we love about the look when we are able to ensure it's properly exposed (it'll get better with time I promise!)
      Thanks for the kind words and positive reinforcement!

    • @mariajoseandchase
      @mariajoseandchase  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow Kevin! We really appreciate that.
      We watched a ton of van conversion videos trying to pick and choose things we wanted and didn't want as well and so many of the murphy beds were just so complicated that it almost made us decide not to have one. I sat down for a few minutes and thought about how simple and inexpensive the bed truly can be while still offering usable storage below and behind and this is what I came up with!

    A nice side effect of the murphy bed is that you can still make the bed level if you ever stealth camp on a city street. I am really enjoying your build series and like the order that you are doing things. Makes so much more sense then others that I have watched. 👊

    Yay finally what I was waiting for :) It looks super easy to do or you made it look easy :) I was wondering if you're planning to strap bedsheets to the bed when you will be making it in the morning? And what size is your mattress?

    • @mariajoseandchase
      @mariajoseandchase  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Wooooop woooop! Truthfully, it was so simple. Anyone could do it without complication. When we build a home in the future we’ll definitely incorporate Murphy beds in an office. The hardware was so easy to work with and then you just have to build a frame to whatever dimension you want!
      We’re going to add some straps for sure so sheets stay neat. Our mattress is a full, slightly trimmed a few inches height and width.

    This is my first visit so idk how you looked/sounded b4 but it’s great now. I’ll tell you, the reason I’m a new sub is due to your comment on that ‘proprietary’ channel. I’ve been following the Vanlife movement for many years. It never was about becoming a famous youtuber and charging people for everything. I can understand and don’t mind if people want to put together build guides, I’ve bought one myself. I don’t mind affiliate links and I use them on purpose to support channels. I draw the line on sending money monthly to anyone to support their way of life. And if I ask a question and get told it’s ‘proprietary’ I’m out.
    Thanks for being authentic and wanting to help other people start this way of life. I hope you weren’t offended by my comment. It’s just my opinion.
    Beautiful Murphy bed design and build!!

    • @mariajoseandchase
      @mariajoseandchase  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Liza Me thanks Liza! We’ve installed two windows in the rear door and one big one in the sliding door. We had been working three days per week on the build (when possible) due to rain. We’ve made the most progress over the last four weeks. So on total real time maybe six weeks building.

      Thanks friend! We definitely wanted to get the point across without dropping names. We would completely understand if the hardware took years of research and one-off manufacturing, but we're entirely certain it was a kit that anyone could purchase. We experienced the same lack of sharing or refusal to assist in the bus community early in our build and it made us want to help as much as possible with any conversion we take on from that point.

      Hey Aaron! What a beautiful country and we are so excited you’re tuning in with us. That’s a fantastic question.
      The quick disconnects, fuses, and everything else will still be accessible from below, we’ll just need to get down and open the drawer we’ll eventually build to do any type of management to the system. As far as simply monitoring the system, our charge controller and our shunt are Wireless capable so we can monitor the entire system from our phone. I’m planning a full video on that setup and I’ll remember to show the way we’ll have to access everything if needed.

    You asked for comments about the audio and video with your new camera and mic. Sound was good. The camera had an impressive wide angle ability. On the negative side, some of the lighting was poor. For example at the intro from Marie José, she was shot with back lighting. So we could see the garden beautifully, but Marie José appeared to be in a dark cave. Looks like it is a nice camera once you get used to it.

    i have been thinking about this ...all I n eed is a "single" (dogs can share with me). I am thinking Murphy or suspended ? OR just buy a Fouton and secure to floor ? I am leaving the drivers side wall flat so I can use as a projection screen. The Murphy bed does eliminate the "garage" ? a "normal" layout with bed 3' up does "utilize" the airspace . ??? a "suspended" bed could use a simple 12 volt winch and pully to raise bed to ceiling ??

    • @mariajoseandchase
      @mariajoseandchase  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks friend! It’s just under 6ft in length (which can be modified to any dimension needed based on the van layout someone wants) so it’s definitely close, but neither of us stretch out when we sleep so we know we can make it work. With our layout any bed would have had to be the same length so we could have only gained width with a slide, fixed, or modular design.

    • @mariajoseandchase
      @mariajoseandchase  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alex Rader hey Alex! The two primary 1” ply walls are secured to the floor, the ceiling, and the plywood walls. We installed another 1” section of ply that connects to the back wall and both primary sides of the Murphy bed wall forming an “H” of sorts as horizontal support. The entire bed is so ridiculously sturdy and the entire bed was very simple to build. When the bed is down, it rests on the bulk of our L shaped sofa, so there is very little stress on any part of the system.

    • @alexrader
