Oh my goodness right? I had to rewatch the CT cutscenes since I... kinda forgot what he did >_> but yes! The callbacks were so well done and I'm so impressed by the developers!
A heartfelt catboi ramble here, forgive me: My first ever playthrough, totally unspoiled-- my stomach instinctively did a flip when he said that this was the last moment we'd have to ourselves for a while. Inviting me to sit with him. I have to wonder if anyone else felt like they could perceive some form of intimacy in this moment. As if in his heart (which in lots of ways he tried so hard to obscure from everyone), he saw an "us" between himself and the WoL, revealing his heart's view of me/my WoL and him. My gut instinct in that moment made my head spin. I thought I was mad but my gut knows how I felt. I asked myself: Was he saying he--? And with the sandwiches---? And just about begging me to stay alive? Wanting to spend the rest of his life adventuring with me? Was he trying to tell me something I could scarcely bring myself to speak aloud? I realize SE will never overtly connect characters romantically in this game for a lot of reasons (pretty good ones, in honesty). But holy shit is this heavily implied unrequited love. You as a player get to decide what type of love it is, and whether it is requited or not. To me, it is at minimum an intensely close, romantic friendship, at least deep private admiration and love from afar. I've experienced friendships that are romantic and they're beautiful. Emotional and even some physical closeness without the complication of something more. I lamented when I played through that I could see he was talking about me/my WoL through all his sweet words, and why won't he simply speak his heart to me directly? He did, but in his usual indirect way. (I know why in terms of the plot but god, did it confuse me and make me ache. Just tell me, confound it.) I realized something was up when my instinct was to want my WoL to sit a lot closer to him. And then, the trial happened after this, and well. Lots more love laid bare for all to see. There's a reason I call him my cat-husband now because at least in my heart, we're stuck with each other for life. He gets nothing but love in my heart going forward. My heart doesn't know catboys aren't real in the everyday sense. It just knows love.
Well this is the scene where I broke my " no catbois" rule. This is the where my WOL fell for him and wanted nothing more than to free him from his crystal prison. The first time she selfishly wanted to keep safe not just to have him as friend, but someone more.
Thanks for posting! I just had this cutscene and about halfway through I had the hunch he was talking about the WoL. Since my character is male I wanted to find a clip with a female WoL to see if the line changed. It did! :D
