I got my 14 Fiesta ST right after I saw this video, I’m stage 2 Cobb, short shift kit, bigger intercooler, it has 87,000 plus miles on it and it runs 💪🏼 Strong as ever, I’m on my 5th set of tires, so fun to drive fast, Street legal go kart. The Fiesta Flash 🤙🏼🍺🍺
Which is why Ford is discontinuing both this car and it's big brother the Focus ST. Why?? Because they OWN the domestic truck market with their F150s....
Motor mounts are such an overlooked mod these days. So cheap and simple to install. I consistently dropped a tenth at the drag strip just from upgrading the mounts.
Matt Farah and the smoking tyre team these new videos keep getting better and better. Easily my favourite channel now with the lack of drive content. Great to see everyman's cars not just supercars
I stiffened the motor mounts on my first 93 Accord Made the car vibrate a little at idle, especially with the A/C on... but man, that shift from 1st to 2nd could chirp all day with like a measly 160-170 crank HP. Definitely a worthwhile mod.
TheSmokingTire That motor mount looks pretty tough and well engineered. I had an uprated rear mount that sheared on my turbo Corrado cos the metal holding the bolts was too thin. There was lots of thumping noises that day!
I got a kid running around in a fiesta st and a pizza delivery guy runs a focus st. I really like how ford placed themselves in the "hot hatch" class. Even my wife's regular 2012 Focus with handling package is fun to drive. 217whp/287wtq with boltons + tune? Pretty good stuff. I'd love to see a 1/4 mile run down the line. And it seemed the exhaust sounded so good that the poor microphone got overwhelmed.
i do like the gains. but hes right. getting some real numbers like 0-60 improvement over stock, track time improvement over stock, even a 1/4 time would be nice to see. Hell, even do the 30-60 test in 4th gear that mountune gives to show their products improvement. at this point its definitely mountune vs. cobb for the premium fiesta st tune company. I would love to see a mountune mp215 fiesta against a stage 3 cobb fiesta in a series of challenges (using my jeremy clarkson voice).
I feel like you'd love a Mazda speed 3, just a few little things like a front mount intercooler and a tune, you'll be making 300+whp. This little unit is awesome though, it seems to respond to upgrades very similar to the speed 3.
The exhaust mounted mic sounds kinda weird, windy and it also sounds like it has a lot more gain on it than it can handle, is that true or am I just being a bit of a moron? xD
I completely agree there had to be a better way to capture the exhaust note, outside the car from a little bit away maybe? Idk I really only hear the car as a garbled mess of audio with this one.
TheSmokingTire That seems correct, but besides the windy noise, comes the distortion probably due to being over those gain limits. A bit more distance wouldn't hurt. That said, just a minor constructive remark. Love your videos, mic too close or not =)
jockeleu The distance thing is tough, because you have to keep it out of the wind still, so moving it farther away means laterally, which very quickly becomes wind over exhaust. It's an art, not a science... next time we film the fiesta we'll have drive-by shots and stuff so you'll get more variety of noises. I'd say the most accurate audio is the single shot from behind on the dyno.
Great video thank you for uploading. I'm from the UK and had the previous model of Fiesta ST. It had the same motor mount or lower gear box mount issues too. I guess a cost saving exercise from Ford. As back then, it was a standard part, shared across the range, without an upgrade in the higher powered cars. Good to see you guys are going for a good well rounded package! I'm sure it will surprise many other cards on the road or track.
This would be considered a stage 2 in the Subaru world. Isn't Stage 3 an upgraded Turbo, injectors, intercooler etc etc? Stage 1 just being a tune? Anyways, that's not bad gains, She has a torquey engine for an inline 4. However the hp is nothing to write home about. With numbers like that, at least she's a lightweight compared to the WRX's & Evo's out there, however I don't think this car would fair too well against either of them (assuming they're stock)
Tell yah what. Those ST's give my stock 2011 STi a run for its money on the autox course. Lighter and they handle dam well. Ford did quite alright on the ST.
the fiesta st does its best work barreling out of corners in 2nd or 3rd gear. it'll match or be better than plenty of much more powerful cars in the first 100 meters or so after a corner. but it's lack of real hp comes in afterwards and things like evo's and sti's will ultimately blow it away. After all, there is a reason why the fiesta st is cheap. lol it's a compliment really to ford that we use cars like EVO and STI in the same sentence.
Dylan Knight For sure. Thats why it fairs so well at the AutoX's. Gets around really well and unless the course has some more open areas I can't really use much of my STi's power. A lot of people have these feelings nowadays of more power more power and if a car doesn't have huge whp numbers, it isn't good. Cars like the ST and FRS/BRZ are great at what they are designed to be. Quick, nimble, fun cars. I have a ton of respect for them.
This thing looks like a complete bundle of joy. It sounds unbelievably mean with that stage 3. Although I'd probably put an exhaust that was a bit more stealthy if it was me, since I wouldn't want to wake my entire neighborhood when I take the bends lol.
That clunk of that motor mount scares my buddy who has had manuals before, I'm coming close to 6k miles on mine I might have to look into this mount soon, maybe the rest of the stage 3 later :-P
The Focus and Fiesta ST both have the soft motor mount issue. The engine smacks the firewall bone stock on a hard 1-2 shift. I'd consider the motor mount upgrade part of stage 1 or stage 2. Other than a tune, it was the first thing I did to my Focus ST.
Critique: you gents need to work on your audio normalization for the TST videos. Shots are good, it's compiled well, but audio is all over the place loud/soft/loud/soft. Keep up the great vids!
Really looking forward to those future updates of this thing. Not sure I'm completely sold on that exhaust note but those gains look nice! Has Cobb slated where these stage kits are going to be in terms of being CARB friendly? I imagine a new filter and a chip will be fine; a down-pipe not so much.
Why does the stock horsepower keep going up every episode. Lol. First video stock was 185whp/230wtq and Stage 1 was 187whp/246wtq. Second video stock was 189whp/236wtq, stage 1 192whp/256wtq. Then in the Protune video it made stock 191whp/236wtq So did you re-dyno the vehicle with the stock tune and stage 1 each time or what? Too much variation in numbers.
This sounds awesome. It's good to see that the new Ford hatchbacks respond well to mods, but of course the turbos have a lot to do with that. My '03 SVT Focus doesn't see too many gains with bolt-ons even with a tune, so I'm looking forward to either getting a Fiesta or Focus ST, or hell just get the new Mustang when it comes out :D
ford racing have got the 1 litre ecoboost up to 300 bhp. that's mad for a 3 cylinder engine. pumaspeed uk have got the 1 litre up to 215 bhp. but you'd have to throw a couple of thousand at it to get it up to this power. pity you can't get the three door versions in the states. still a beast of a car
I was a bit skeptical about this channel, beacause it's from USA and I'm from Europe. I said, what they know about car? Don't get me wrong,I have no problem with Uncle Sam and with the people, I mad about Corvette's, my favorite band is G 'n' R, and so on. Usual stuff. You know, common thinking over here, Americans can only drive on straight roads, doing burnouts or race on oval tracks. No experience in real driving and small engine-big power tech. But when I watched the video about the "No Style" Corolla, I sad, hmm, not bad from an American. Then I continue to watch the Bi_turbo 348, I tought wow, they going mad now! Yet it is avarage, only expensive cars. And here it is. Fiesta. An absolutely not a sportscar fans favourite. A cheap and more practical then exciting car. And you made an awesome video and of course tuning on it. That's really changed my thinking about Americans in car wise. Great channel, definitely a must see one. Keep doing your awesome work! Thanks! I'll go watching some Jay Leno's Garage now. :D
Right, the motor is not hitting anything exactly, but the bushings of the Roll Resistor (which we refer to as the "Rear Motor Mount" anyways) are maxing out their range and "bottoming out", creating the nasty bang we all hate.
TheSmokingTire no problem lol, imagine you already knew that but said what you did as it is much easier to explain? love the videos btw i watch them all
I was holding a "X-mini" speaker that I've pluged in to my laptop to see this video and when you install the new exhaust, big diference in sound and vibration in the speaker. Great sound from that exhaust! Stainless Steel exhaust? I've a 2004 Subaru Legacy 3.0R that I've to replace the exhaust and if a stainless steel have this improvement in sound, I will put one too.
You forgot to overlay the differences from Stage 2 to Stage 3. You did that for stock vs Stage 1, and Stage 1 vs Stage 2. It is important info to know if it is worth it, and where the gain is in the power band.
Do you guys think you could add a comment in the description or even during the videos on a ball park price on how much these upgrades should cost? I know prices very market to market and especially car to car but even a ball park estimate would help people figure out if they're over paying or going in the right direction.
that'd be stage 2 in uk, my fiesta ST is currently running a revo stage 2 map with airtec intercooler, itg induction kit and milltek turboback exhaust and that puts out up to 240bhp, stage 3 would then be a hybrid turbo and stage3 intercooler. I've heard loads of good things about the cobb mount and have ordered mine, just waiting for it to come as the thumping noise really is a cringe and struggling to put all the power down to the ground
The #'s are a nice increase. How much does a stage 3 cobb kit cost for one of these? Do you need to by the other stages before stage 3 as in progressive upgrading? How much are Fiesta STs going for? I currently have a cobalt sedan and I did the basic bolt ons and a tune and made ~60whp and ~80trq. Big improvement. I can imagine how excited Fiesta drivers are to get such a nice bump in power
If you figure a 12% driveline loss you have 243 hp and 321 lbs at the crank, almost matching a 1st generation Ford lightning's 240 hp and 340 lbs. That's hilarious! And I love it!
my 08 GTI with 120k miles did only 178whp (mch maintanance needed incl decarb) shold have been closer to 190whp..after maintanance was done, GIAC stage 1 tune (intake, downpipe and tne..I got 230whp.
TheSmokingTire Hey Matt, when do we get to see you take this thing on a canyon/track review?? It would be awesome, especially if you pit it up against something more expensive (& stock) with a similar bang for your buck style ;)
stage 1 is like 620 now with the motor mount. stage 2 and 3...just imagine how much an intercooler, exhaust, downpipe, and intake costs. lol im guessing 2500 for the whole package if not more. yeah, they could do more and with a real tune it'll obviously get more power and torque. but with just the OTS tune im not sure if it's good for the money.
Dylan Knight Thing is you don't need to do all those those things. The intake is for a bit more response, as is the intercooler piping upgrade, the catback is for the noise, you can get away with just doing the downpipe, intercooler, and running the OTS Stage 3 tune and getting basically the same numbers. RMM is a must either way so not including that.
TheSmokingTire The car sounds pretty wicked inside with the exhaust. I'm wondering how this is on the highway. I'm hoping to put an exhaust on my FiST and want a decent sound when hammering it, but hoping its not loud or droney when cruising since this is my DD and trip car.
The mountune kit offered by ford would have given you similar figures and only costs £499 fully fitted by Ford themselves without affecting any kind of warranty
191.2 WHP stock is pretty impressive considering the advertised crank hp is 197hp. If the usual estimated drivetrain loss of 15% is correct, the stock motor would be putting out in the 220s.
Awesome review! I really like that you are taking the car through each stage showcasing the benefits of the various bolt-ons and tunes. I think It would be pretty interesting to do something similar to this with different manufacturers, going through the various stages with an a4 or s4 using a tuner like APR would make an awesome video.
I'm coming from a 2015 mk7 Golf R which I've had since new and is already sold. I live in Florida where AWD isn't necessary. Payments were way too expensive also. Want to spend about 15K on a used hot hatch type vehicle but something with more character. I had a stage 2 tune on my Golf R and no matter how fast it was, it didn't feel lively. It was good, but I want something small, light and fun and torquey with great balance in corners that'll put a smile on my face. And cheap maintenance. Other than a Miata, which I refuse to drive, I can't think of anything better than an St or an FRS. But I really like mid-range torque which the FRS is lacking. I've heard the St is a lot of fun. No it's obviously not as fast or luxurious inside as my Golf R but I don't care about that. Don't care about looks either. Just want a fun little daily that I can throw a couple cobb mods like a simple tune to add an extra 25 HP and maybe 40 lb feet and the rear engine mount, and the intake with some good rubber and be good to go. I can also go and get an E46 m3 that's over 15 years old with 100,000 miles for 15K. But I'm trying to avoid costly maintenance and repairs and a 15-year-old high performance M car sounds like a money pit. I was considering the :-) Mazdaspeed 3 and even though it's a lot faster, I've read that it is nowhere as well engineered and balanced and as fun as the fist. You guys have any other suggestions for around 15K better then a 3-4 year old fiesta ST when considering the factors I mentioned?? Any advice is appreciated
Civic SI? The fiesta heat soaks pretty bad and will feel slow coming from the golf but it fits the cheap to fix category. Older mustang in FL would also be a no-brainer
Still seems a low increase in power, guess its pretty highly tuned from the factory?. Either way impressive for a little car. I need to get a motor mount for my VRS, as the judder is awful when taking off, now i know what it is!.
The Smoking Tire Matt, I'm about to buy a Fiesta ST, can you comment on how all the mods affect the cars daily driver characteristics? I plan on driving this at least 70 miles a day to work and back, so fuel economy is also important.
TheSmokingTire Did you get a check engine light come on in any of the stages? Did you notice while idling with A/C on because of the motor mount it shook a little? And also did all these mods void the warrenty? I just got a fiesta st and am looking into the cobb stuff. Love your page!
That's the guy he was next to at the stoplight. He probly saw Matt fly by him and thought they were racing, and if that's so it took the Honda a loooong time to catch up lmao
You mean of the two cars in the outer lane which went past as he slowed down. One was apparently a honda and therefore a "ricer"? i think you've read a lot into nothing there.
Most performance fords are underrated from the factory. For many reason, but the best example is the terminator cobra. They were factory under 400 but most dyno'd over 400
What do they need to do to it to make it hold that torque? Turbo? Cams? To me a 25hp gain isn't enough for the amount of work that's gone in. When it's on the dyno you can hear it start to pull then the torque tails and it just sounds like it's struggling the whole rest of the run.
Very cool..... Question: When the car has to go in for service, Can/Will the regular Ford dealership be able to work on it without screwing up the tuning and performance? If not, who can, especially if you live 1000 miles away from Cobb Tuning?
JustMe Any Ford dealer can do the service. The only sticky area is if warranty stuff has to happen, because if it's anything involving the engine you'll have to argue with them that the mods aren't what broke it. If you want to avoid that hassle, you can buy monotune parts through your dealer and have them install it, and retain the warranty. Most of the monotune parts are literally cobb parts, funny enough.
It's not bad. It gains about 5 minutes a week because I wear it when I sleep and it gets overclocked a bit, but it's a solid watch that I have been wearing every day for 5 years.
TheSmokingTire 5 minutes a week is not because you wear when you sleep. It should stay within -4 +6 seconds a day, no matter what you do with it. Maybe it's time for a service - these need some oil change and worn part replacement too, not just a 6k mile Fiesta ;) Hope this helps.
brtnspn This is my third "nice" watch, and all of them have gained 5 minutes a week. It couldn't possibly be the watches, as they are all from different brands. It has to be the way I wear it.
TheSmokingTire I really like the fiesta and it seems everyone else does too. I'm considering getting one as my daily because they're so rad! I like the power gains of stage 3 but the exhaust sounds a little too ricy to me, no offense to those that like it, but does the noise get annoying as you drive it or is it worth it even on long trips? Thanks P.S. Great videos keep making them! I'm a big fan!
These videos make me want a Fiesta ST so much.
I hope TST is getting some commission for all the Fiesta ST's they're selling for Ford.
Pops and Crackles make my life
wow americas getting some proper fords at last
fleetwoodsucks 4 years later, they’re all going away.
@@BlueSkyCrystals luckily i coped one before they were gone lol
@@martinmaravilla3438 same here I feel absolutely at home I always got made fun of for liking the European fords over the VWs tbh
@@BlueSkyCrystals the mk8 FiST is ugly af imo so I’m not the upset. + I got my mk7 before they were all bought up.
Which is why Ford is discontinuing both this car and it's big brother the Focus ST. Why?? Because they OWN the domestic truck market with their F150s....
TheSmokingTire just bought Fiesta ST and taking delivery Monday thanks to you guys!
Motor mounts are such an overlooked mod these days. So cheap and simple to install. I consistently dropped a tenth at the drag strip just from upgrading the mounts.
Gives a much nicer driving feel too.
Matt Farah and the smoking tyre team these new videos keep getting better and better. Easily my favourite channel now with the lack of drive content. Great to see everyman's cars not just supercars
Loving this series, Matt! Appreciate you and the film guys doing it. That ST is one awesome little hot hatch now.
This chassis lowered on coilovers one of the best handling cars i have been in. Just goes where you point it most speeds (depending on tyres)
I was expecting on a stage 3 tune 230whp. But the exhaust sound made up for it! Love it!
dude!!! that thing sounds like ken blocks gymkhana fiesta!! bad ass! i love it!
2:28 - My face the first time I drove my ST.
Yup! xD Perfect
Mine, too! Such a fun little car.
yep. 3rd gear pull with the salesperson in passenger seat. "this is a fiesta?!" Sold.
Yesss!!!
Same aahah
I stiffened the motor mounts on my first 93 Accord
Made the car vibrate a little at idle, especially with the A/C on... but man, that shift from 1st to 2nd could chirp all day with like a measly 160-170 crank HP. Definitely a worthwhile mod.
ours does that exact thing now too. Cobb sent us a second tune that adds 100 RPM to the idle when the AC is on, which we may install next week.
TheSmokingTire
That motor mount looks pretty tough and well engineered. I had an uprated rear mount that sheared on my turbo Corrado cos the metal holding the bolts was too thin. There was lots of thumping noises that day!
My 92 accord has stock motor mounts and I can chirp going into second no problem.
TheSmokingTire
Yea that is how I fixed it too. Just dialed in the idle screw and bumped it up to ~900 or so.
Derek Butler
Shift feel and the general tightness of the front end was improved too. It's not just the chirps
I prefer small fast cars like fiesta ST over fast big heavy cars,
Makes me wanna buy a fiesta now....!
The numbers under the curve are IMPRESSIVE!! Annnnd, I like that the exhaust note doesn't sound like a Honda Civic with a "fart can".
Holy carp! Matt you keep getting thinner! Keep it up buddy!

The RMM was a huge upgrade on my FiST. This should be the first mod any Fiesta ST owner should do...even right off the lot.
...and the Accessport. I'm going to hold off on the filter so I don't have to throw it away when I get the cold-air intake.

Really like this car project and how its coming along. Solid gains for the little 1.6
I drive mine bone stock with a grin from ear to ear anyway. I think the car is plenty fast out of the box. Fast enough to kill ya for sure
MsDannyrevs I love mine

I'm sure one of the 162 other comments mentioned it but the engine does not hit the firewall when the OEM mount moves.
Nice gains on power.
Love the launch control Feature! Good price on that exhaust too!

As a fist owner my jaw dropped seeing the difference the motor mount made. I always wondered why the fiesta would shift bouncy sometime.
Assuming drivetrain loss is 15%, this means the little ST is making 250hp & 330 ft.lbs of torque (!!!!!!) at the flywheel. What a little monster :)
Critique: you gents need to work on your audio normalization for the TST videos. Shots are good, it's compiled well, but audio is all over the place loud/soft/loud/soft. Keep up the great vids!

stayunique91 he added tunes to it and down pipe which allows the turbo to get more air so it’s not restricted as much.
Maybe the adjusted the numbers to match the da of the time this video was filmed?

Right, the motor is not hitting anything exactly, but the bushings of the Roll Resistor (which we refer to as the "Rear Motor Mount" anyways) are maxing out their range and "bottoming out", creating the nasty bang we all hate.
point taken, thanks.
TheSmokingTire
no problem lol, imagine you already knew that but said what you did as it is much easier to explain?
love the videos btw i watch them all
I was holding a "X-mini" speaker that I've pluged in to my laptop to see this video and when you install the new exhaust, big diference in sound and vibration in the speaker. Great sound from that exhaust! Stainless Steel exhaust? I've a 2004 Subaru Legacy 3.0R that I've to replace the exhaust and if a stainless steel have this improvement in sound, I will put one too.
That grey sedan does a fly-by after you launch from the light. I guess he thought you were trying to race him lol.
Nice vid, I’m sold
You forgot to overlay the differences from Stage 2 to Stage 3. You did that for stock vs Stage 1, and Stage 1 vs Stage 2. It is important info to know if it is worth it, and where the gain is in the power band.
You can get mountune tuning in euro, stage 1 212 bhp 6.6 seconds I wonder what stage 3 would be over here
Do you guys think you could add a comment in the description or even during the videos on a ball park price on how much these upgrades should cost?
02:13 he was a real giant baby having fun!
I saw this video and immediately called Cobb and was like "WHEN CAN I GET ALL THE STUFF YOU GAVE HIM?!"
cool whats next?
i would love to see fame things done to focus + suspention
how about that TST?
damn those power graphs look really steady and smooth till red-line, i bet this car has more power if it weren't using a box tune.
amazing little hot hatch you've made yourself there guys! how much would a build like this run someone? again, congrats. Damnit I really want one!
If you figure a 12% driveline loss you have 243 hp and 321 lbs at the crank, almost matching a 1st generation Ford lightning's 240 hp and 340 lbs. That's hilarious! And I love it!
Same exact lower motor mount as the mini cooper S R56. very interesting
my 08 GTI with 120k miles did only 178whp (mch maintanance needed incl decarb) shold have been closer to 190whp..after maintanance was done, GIAC stage 1 tune (intake, downpipe and tne..I got 230whp.
Yeah but a GTi is 2.0 turbo and the Fiesta is a 1.6 turbo.
TheSmokingTire Hey Matt, when do we get to see you take this thing on a canyon/track review??
It would be awesome, especially if you pit it up against something more expensive (& stock) with a similar bang for your buck style ;)
After the mustang gets finished. - Thad
Thanks for taking the time to reply man, I'm glad you all have such fun projects in the works!
Should make for some great content :)
TheSmokingTire hey when is the next mustang show im a import guy that wants to see a show bout rustangs stop hoarding the V8 goodness!!!
Did you do a video with your Stage 3 Fiesta ST on The Snake? You should if you haven't yet.
This is an interesting video Matt, as most people tend to over look engine bracing :D
Should get a custom tune and show the difference between of the shelf and custom tunes.
What was the cost of the parts? I am interested in the hp/$ ratio...
stage 1 is like 620 now with the motor mount. stage 2 and 3...just imagine how much an intercooler, exhaust, downpipe, and intake costs. lol im guessing 2500 for the whole package if not more. yeah, they could do more and with a real tune it'll obviously get more power and torque. but with just the OTS tune im not sure if it's good for the money.
I'm hoping to put an exhaust on my FiST and want a decent sound when hammering it, but hoping its not loud or droney when cruising since this is my DD and trip car.
sounds great!!
The mountune kit offered by ford would have given you similar figures and only costs £499 fully fitted by Ford themselves without affecting any kind of warranty
191.2 WHP stock is pretty impressive considering the advertised crank hp is 197hp. If the usual estimated drivetrain loss of 15% is correct, the stock motor would be putting out in the 220s.
yeah, the fiesta (and indeed all fords since the "great cobra debacle of1999") is quite underrated from the factory
5:29 Ricer fly-by, and go figure its a Honda!
101kontraband 'Twas a joke people, get with it.
Gerberbaby922 egg on face :) too used to internet hate.
Hey, when are we going to have an update on the project fox body?
I wonder is it about time for a LSD for the torque and wheel spin
These come with lsd brah
So this car makes 191whp stock? I find that hard to believe as the stock bhp is 197hp to the crank. Sounds like a happy dyno to me.
donnyinlakai561 This car is underrated from the factory.
Most performance fords are underrated from the factory. For many reason, but the best example is the terminator cobra. They were factory under 400 but most dyno'd over 400
Matt fucked up in this video, if you watch the stage 1 video the standard WHP was 185
What do they need to do to it to make it hold that torque? Turbo?
Matt, Hi. Hopefully you would respond. How you liking your rolex?
It's not bad. It gains about 5 minutes a week because I wear it when I sleep and it gets overclocked a bit, but it's a solid watch that I have been wearing every day for 5 years.
interesting, thanks for the reply !
Matt do you have a panerai watch yet? I got one and would like to recommend one ! It will keep the rolex company for sure.
LOL stuff like this brings out the kid in me too..
Will you do drive -by's so we can hear it properly.
Well damn. I might have to play with a Fiesta next.
Thanks
P.S. Great videos keep making them! I'm a big fan!
The software upgrades screws up your whole warranty huh Matt?
