Considering it's your first experience, I'd say : well done ! Some comments are so dumb... that was a test-run for demo only, not a real-life production session ! Reminds me of my very first ADR session... so embarassing. 😂 We filmed on location, and the main sequence to overdub was a waist-high flood with a huge storm going. Big motors from paraglides were supposed to provide for the wind gusts, but proved too weak. Production manager rented a helicopter for 6 hours of flight... what a difference, we had props, water, debrits, sand, pebbles, branches, leaves, etc. all over the place ! Then, the whole cast gathered three weeks later for the ADR session. A huge studio, where Oliver Stone used to come for sound recording and mixing. We all were impressed, including me... as this was about to be my very first run at ADR. The actress to record prior to me was my fictional granny... very subtle and light voice, very few lines to record, only minor words, in the distance from major caracters. I came just after, and pointed out my quite loud voice and my caracter shouting all the time during this flood 15 minutes portion of the movie. The main sound recordist replied "...all was fine, no worries.". About 2 seconds in my first line, I saw him jumping on his seat grabbing his headphones only to throw them aside. And he rushed towards me... "Give me a minute, I'm going to get that boom and mic further away from the platform you're on.". His assistant was all smiles and laughters... while I was wondering whether I had done anything wrong or misunderstood any instruction. That session eventually turned out to be an outstanding moment for me, and I became hooked to voicing and microphone performances. Still this souvenir lives in me and shall remain forever...
I'd love to see a video on various mic placement options, with pros and cons. Of course you can explain the basics such as camera-mounted, boom, lavalier etc... but I imagine there is a lot of nuanced information you can explain as well. You may also be able to dive into unorthodox, outside the box options or really specific use case recommendations. I’m sure there is something to explore here.
For ADR, placement on the boom is definitely key to keep in mind. If you're looping an entire scene you have a bit more freedom, but if it's one or two lines you're dropping into existing production, then you really have to pay attention. The placement in this video is quite tight, hence the drastic roll-off on the bottom end. I'll traditionally boom maybe 3 feet away as a starting point (though I have the luxury of shooting on a fairly large and dead stage), but I'll have the actor tighten up, step back, turn off axis, etc. as the production dictates and how we are matching on playback.
Hey Andrew, Great stuffs! Gotta say it's interesting to see how they do ADR in US. I'm from Paris, France and over there it doesn't work the same way. We use the Rythmo Band and it's not at all the same way of working. For the next video could you talk about live mixing (production sound mixing) or post re-recording/mixing? Thanks for the video!
There was talk about doing this in Premier a few times, but just in case anyone wonders, FCPX also has voiceover capability as well - I use it regularly on my main channel because as I’m getting older I’m finding I’m an idiot and can’t speak 😂
I wish this channel were around before I went to school. Speaking of can you guys talk about ways to get into the audio engineer business? How did you find yourself on a set?
WOW! Especially the "we don't need to worry about syncing" on the back of the head shot, as an early scripted editor, that make so much sense, when sometimes the reaction is a bit off, lol
How about a video on mic positioning in live recordings to minimize bleed and work with reflections and phase? Things like recording drum kits, with or without a band, including vocals, guitars and or basses or other instruments in the same environment.
My most recent 2 videos are entirely ADR, I'd be curious to see what you guys thought. But ADR is a length process, sync is the biggest annoyance for takes lol
I'd love to see a how-to/step-by-step tutorial on how you guys edit your audio in post for your videos whether it be the x2 D3/D3 Pro shotguns during the mailbag episodes or the V.Lavs when you're out shooting on location.
Was hoping the final mix would sound better, but sounds like you're in a room (which you are), instead of sounding like you're outside, like the scene in Night of the Living Dead. I'm hoping that's because you just grabbed the sounds from the playback. But that's the challenge I've run into doing ADR. Outside lines fixes sound indoors when doing ADR indoors. I don't have a sound proof room, so I'm forced to have my actors record lines outside, so new lines blend in. And a second track of ambiance just to blend it in.
Funny enough when studying the waveforms in Protools we discovered the actresses lines in this scene are also ADR and that some of her dialogue is duplicated recordings from earlier in the scene.
Doing convincing outdoor loops can always be tricky, especially if the space you're in is small or reflective. Certainly no harm in actually shooting them outside if that's an option. On my stage, I'll usually boom a bit further away than my interior loops, but it's a bit of a balancing act between hearing the room vs. proximity. Some shows I do will always go to the lav for anything outside, and some will go for the boom.
Cool video. Can you recommend some equipment to capture audio for ADR? I use Resolve on a Mac, so I'd like to know what equipment I should get for ADR recording. Thanks, guys.
Time stretching really messed it up. Not a good idea to stretch - rather compress and shorten using that tool. Also the microphone distance should match what was used on set.
I always have difficulties imitating voices that were shot in an outdoor location. Mostly there's a slight echo noticable making it obvious the soudn was recorded indoors. How do I get around this without having to 1. do the ADR outdoors and 2. having to rent an expensive sound studio? Any help is appreciated!
You could do it pratically like laying some blankets using your matress at your side or behind you to deathen the sound and in post recording adding the right ammount of reverb, now in your computer you can use de dereverb effect that premiere and audition uses, I recommend if you have both always use audition to record master and add effect to all your soundings.
So I want to know about Audio bit rate. How much you need for decent youtube video. Do they have any phone apps that record decent bit depth for android. Wave is better than MP3, but is does it make a difference? Does Diety make a small Lav recorder (similar to Zoom F1-LP or Tascam DR-10L)?
Steve and I have a challenge video coming up to see who can mic a piano better... it's a really fun video about different techniques. We want to do more challenges bc it's a real nail biter til the end of the video when we let people listen to the results of each person's unique take on the challenge.
good video. You answered one of my questions - about the base. On my recording I was in a confined but not small space, I was thinking about going back to the location to get the right acoustics. In your sample you were outside so there was no echo. How do you match to restricted space? i.e. how do you determine what the required characteristics are?
Great video! Informative and interesting. Never thought much about this type of option for a film...but come to think of it, I remember watching Harry Potter in my Spanish class and not knowing what they were saying so me and my friends were just making up stories on our own. That was super fun but without knowing we were exploring fake ADR. Hahaha For the next content, I would love to learn about some basic things about when to use and how to choose between the 75/150Hz Low Cut Filters.
The best thing about this channel is that they're creating educational content aimed at their customer base instead of just blatantly demoing their own products, like other manufacturers (cough R0de cough).
What's your favorite instance of really bad ADR?
Adam Sandlers Billy Madison.
Leo DiCaprio in Gatsby
Everytime I did it.
You're a good sport, Andrew!
I try. I figure, what's the worst that can happen looking silly on the internet? -A

You should do a video about recording ambience and room tone, if it should be mono, stereo, with a shotgun mic or large diaphragm etc.
Ambience should be a stereo wav. Can be recorded mono and made into a faux stereo track in a daw w a delay or nudging one side 12-14 ms
Sound 101 is just one of the best content in the whole youtube
Great video and software presentation on ADR. Takes the old school technique of “Dubbing” into the modern world of filmmaking.
I'm on my way to do my first post production ADR gig for a movie I did, and this video actually helped a lot! Thanks:))

Really enjoyed this one! Would you also show us how to mic a live talk show or a live band properly & record good audio? Thanks!
In previous episodes you have mentioned “timecode”. Would you do an episode explaining what is it and how does it work? Thanks in advance!
might be the best video about ADR

Thanks for that episode. I'm working on a project with lot of ADR. Because the Local Sound Team didn't do their job right.
Stay patient if you can :) Good luck!

Can you do a video on pickup patterns and how to decide which is the best for a given scenario?
This was fun one to watch! Good stuff guys!
Hey I suggest a few videos ago asking about for a episode on ADR don't you get a V-Lav for your idea being used?
You must just have bad karma :) check your email!

What mic are using ? A gun mic ?? In STUDIO ???
Yes
Informative. Thanks.
How do you record vehicle sounds?
YAS. ADR!
Love you guys! Thanks
Please make a video on how to connect shotgun microphones into a computer or mac.
Best free or almost free vocal booths ( ie recording in a car, closet full of clothes)
Resolve has a nice ADR function in fairlight but its buggy as hell and broken in beta 17.
Thank you
Great video!
Nice work boys. More real case video please.
Amazing! I have leaned.
How about using the S-Mic-2 for audiobook recording. BTW I luv my S-Mic-2
In real ADR, won't you also need to match the pitch/tone because you could be recording a semitone higher/lower than the original.
that's a very interesting and informative video. The other person is really humble. :)
Yes! Toast of London!
ASMR for the next video. Lol. It would be hilarious to see you put your skills to the test.
Interesting because a friend did sound for Night of the Living Dead.
Does bad lip reading youtube count as Bad ADR? I mean it's incorrect but is it bad?
Not sure but we love those videos either way.
thank you man
unbelievable!! never seen before , a gun mic would be used for ADR recording ......
Shotgun mics are used on ADR all the time professionally.
very interesting ! :)
Nice
Blade Runner is released in 1982, not 1984.

What about you really do an ASMR video, just for the fun of it 😉
Dubbing a scene can fix terrible acting right?
YEP, I mean you can't do miracles but if the actor or actress leave a little to be desire of you could correct it in dubbing
For the love of god get a proper vocal mic
A shotgun is the proper microphone for a ADR session.
