Great video on single stage metallic! I have been trying to paint it for a while now, always get bad mottling. Going to try doubling up on the first coat and wet it out more next time. Thanks, I realize now I was going in the wrong direction.
I once shot a single stage entire car but not metalic. And the thing is with single stage, unless the paint has changed with improvements but I'm not sure this was some years ago, is that the car needed to be polished like every 6 moths because it would start to fade a little. This was interesting to watch and a new learning experience for me! And I can definitely understand the process and explanation of it as you went along. And I think I could do this one with metalic too with confidence. I think. Spraying metalics can be tricky if you're not experienced enough and the results will show quickly! Thanks trigger!👍
@@markchimmy probably the reason the car needed to be polished every 6 months it might have been a cheaper quality paint. They do have single stages that last a very long time. Not this crap I used in this video but I have sprayed some good quality ones that even surprised me

Hey triggerman..doing a fine job to say the least..I can speak for most of your viewers and myself..we appreciate your honesty when saying you not that good with single stage paint and/or don't like them or doing them..however this paint job came out pretty darn nice..and for the young man who is to receive the vehicle is only a blessing for him..(hope he does take good care of your finished project)..I can recall buying my first car at the age of 17..by way of cutting grass and saving my money to purchase at the time a 1966 Dodge Coronet for the sum of $250.00 dollars..those were the days when you can buy cars really dirt cheap..not that my parents couldn't afford to buy me one..but was teaching me a lesson of working hard for what you want..and to appreciate your accomplishment..again another great job there..can't wait for you to another lab project..we'll stay tune..lol😅

Good job man, good gun technique, i haven't used single stage metallic since i was at collage in th 90s, not even sure if we can buy it anymore here in the uk, The job looked alright with it, i remember they painted Vauxhalls with it back from factory and they didn't last long, after watching this i wanna have a go with it. What's it like to polish
Thank you sir! Not my favorite but it serves it's purpose. I haven't polished it much usually these jobs are spray and go. But from what I remember the few times I did Polish it years back it posihes up nice only thing you will see a slight difference in the metallics so it's best to get a good off the gun finish if possible otherwise posish the entire car to keep everything looking uniform. Thank you for watching 🫡
Thanks for that, i did wonder if it would change the appearance if it was polished, Ive had some issues recently with polishing some pastel colours in 2k direct gloss on the system i use which is Mipa OC, i buy the 2k in as i only have a water base coat scheme, it changes colour when you polish it but only on the pastel colours, its a binder system on the 2k which has options for it to be MS or HS OC ( One Coat ), coverage and gloss is great with the OC but you can't polish the pastel colours, MS is better for polishing pastel colours but poor coverage and average gloss Top work and i think that job looked great for what it was @@thetriggerman954
big trigger!! this polk county red hommie.. i’m working out the garage side jobs. great job first and foremost. big fan!! need a single stage in black like that blue? can you help me?
In 97', 11th grade, Moms gave me $600 for a blk on blk 79' 2dr Cutlass Supreme! Girlfriend at the time scratched every panel to the metal. Even tried to put 2-3 pack of sugar in the tank. That lil 260 kept running tho. Thats what happened to my free car 😄
Ohh yeah thats the long Cutlass with the 260 my cousin has one. With the double headlights on each side. Little widow by the quarter panel. Yea them was some slick rides. I had a 71 cutty with the 350 rocket.
Lol sugar in the gas doesn't work unless you also bypass the fuel filter. Might increase carbon buildup marginally but probably not unless you have a lot of sugar up in there
@funfun5656 fast forward to 22'ish my good friend had a kia optima and she believed her ex husband side piece put sugar her tank. She took it to kia and they confirmed it. They had to rebuild the engine. Shit was never the same after that. I think it was like $7-8k in damages. Ultimately she quit paying for it and they repossessed it
@@Erik7prc They might have blamed it on that but many hyundai 4 cyl motors (like in that kia) suffer from premature failure because they used bad rod bearings, finicky injectors and janky timing componentry. I'm not saying the sugar helped but that engine failed because those motors are a 1000km late for an oil change away from failure right from the factory.
Maaco painted an 05 civic sedan for $1000 single stage. No overspray at all. They did fantastic for a single stage. I have a 2006 civic sedan, what would be a typical price on a single stage in your area?
Daaang that came out looking nice! Takes me back to getting my first car, and spray painting it with my boi right over the rust 😂. It was a mercury Sable I got for 300$.
Looks awesome for single stage metallic.ive never got it to look that good.the dust coat really help? But just saying that 46v in the background looks better
😂 that's the head huncho car 🙋🏽♂️ Yes for me the dust coat is a must and the timing is everything. Wet one panel wet the next panel then go back and do your mist coat over the first panel I get them every time like that metallics always lay evenly.
Triggerman, who long id the AM clear lasting before it starts to burn, fade or delaminate. What is a good lasting clear that you like, and how long does it last. I'm looking for air dry clear. hey trigger man love the video I'm getting into single stage paint jobs I usually do two stage got a question for you when I use two stage base coat and clear the base coat goes on great and the clear coat goes on great. help complaints single stage seems a bit thick using a 4-1 single stage 28 PSI should I add should I add one or two parts reducer it's coming out very choppy also can you recommend a really good air regulator for spray guns diaphragm something really good
4:1 so that's 4 part paint to 1 part activator with no reducer? Check with where you buy the paint from and ask if there is any reduction needed. If not then you might have to crank up the pressure some, and make sure the spray gun can handle / good atomization for that paint maybe nozzle size your have to play around with different things if it requires no reducer.
Wow! You're awesome. They must really like their Civic. I always think the blues are so nice looking but I always chicken out. I wanted a B5 Challenger but ended up ordering F8.
Thank you my man the blue looked pretty. I didn't know what it was going to look like since the old paint was so faded. Turned out great. Thank you. F8? Ferrari? 😲
I use to paint dumpsters of all sizes in one of those huge booths with doors to the outside. I had a 79 Cutlass with custom paint and interior when 13X7s were popular when I was 15 but I earned it my self and my older brother giving me a good deal on the car.
whats up triggerman. love ur videos. im on the prosses on getting my car ready for painting. just like this video im not looking for anything crazy just a good first time paint to last me a few or couple of years till i can get a better car. i want to do a jet black base coat. any information for me to do a good job. also this is going to be my first diy paint job. once again triggerman thank you for ur videos. i give me hope on my project. lol
Jet black sould be the easiest job for you. Good choice for a first timer. Just write down your game plan of attack from all of the research you've done/ videos you've watched. Then stick to that. from your prep work to your last step whether that's stopping after clear coat coat or cut and buffing. Just have your plan of attack on paper. Don't just freestyle it in your head. This way you're actually sticking to The results of your research. That's the best advice I can give you . And don't sway away from it.
Read lots of comments. From what I can understand it’s difficult to get good results from single stage. I just learned yesterday that single stage is base mix with clear. You said it’s a cheap way of doing it. And that it won’t last. You said you would prefer to clear it. I don’t understand what the other option was. Base then clear seperately? How much more would that cost? It did turn out really nice. From what I can remember $200-$300 for cost of paint and material. Love all your comments. Will definitely Subscribe.
Thanks for the sub, and yes a short way of putting it is that the base and clear are mixed as one. Ultimately you'd like to put the clear coat on top . That's were you get more UV protection. And depending where you are in the world would depend which method is more suitable. Here in Florida the sun is beating 1000° every day so we need as more UV protection. Metallic single stages are one of the most challenging jobs you will ever face.
Man, night and day from what it was. good work. New to your channel so maybe you already have this, but it would be cool to see a video where you go over different levels of paint jobs. From cheapest, shortest lifespan, to the more expensive, longest lasting paint job. How much each one cost, what equipment you need for each one, and whether or not it would be worth it financially to diy it. You could even make it a whole series. Liked and subbed.
Thank you for the sub, normally the owner of my shop doesn't like to do complete paint jobs well let me be honest he doesn't take complete paint jobs because I don't like doing them lol but I noticed that everyone on TH-cam's likes to see them so I gave him the green light to take in more overall paint jobs so in the future I should have a lot more coming onto the channel and I'll definitely give a breakdown for you guys. Thank you again for subscribing and thank you for your feedback and suggestions. ❤️ Trigger
I painted 3 double sided 10'x15' Hospital signs with a satin brushed aluminum ugh got so lucky i didnt have any sags as they were sprayed vertical, metallic, pearl its all similiar so if u can get good with one u can get good with them all. Lol i had to do a light coat first so it was stickier for my second coat, I never was good with a heavy first coat. But Gg on the paint job, quality!!
Don't you just love when you get lucky like that lol I've had a bunch of those I almost felt the same way on this car, you know how you finish the job and you're walking around looking and looking you're expecting to see a sag or something somewhere and then there's nothing then you start smiling like yeah I did that 🤪🤓 Thank you brother 💪🏼
@@thetriggerman954 messed up part was as they were trying to move the sign out of the booth with a forklift it tipped over and put a massive dent in the middle top of the sign, don't know how I did it but God was watching over me. Made it look like it never happened, I mean I could tell but the boss couldn't so not only fix the dent but patch spray the repaired area blended the brushed aluminum evenly. Don't think ill ever top that repair. Ugh I need to start painting again. Thanks for the inspiration!
I have done it in the past even though I think it's against the manufacturer's recommendation. You definitely want to check with your paint supplier / manufacturer and find out. When I did it in the past I put the single stage down let it sit to where it almost feels like it's pretty much dry maybe 45 minutes then put the clear coat over it and I had no issues. I actually wanted to do it on this car I called the local DuPont distributor and they advised me not to.
Dang mane that look good especially for some single stage. Ima clear over mine. I watched too many of them other TH-camrs lmao. Glad i found this channel
Looks great! I learned to paint with metallic single stages back in the 90s with my Binks #7! Tricky to learn but once you figure it out it’s a great way to make money!👍👍
You really appreciate your car when you buy it yourself. I drive a rusty but trusty 86 4Runner. Turn 24 next month. It’s never let me down. Working on getting it painted but I need to fix the rust. Things halted when I had my son. Had to get a car with airbags.. my 17 rav4 limited got hit two weeks ago. Waiting to get it fixed. I asked if I could watch it get painted since I paint boats but want to move to cars one day.
@@thetriggerman954 yeah I might work towards moving to Bonney lake or Tacoma wa to work at a body shop. I do lots of spot ins and clear blends. I could send you some pictures of the boats.
This is why i love this channel. Favorite painter. Real talk! Og. Shit i am a little scared of spraying that metallic single stage though lol. You did good.
Must be nice ... my first car was 1950 Chevy ... paid $10 for it ... had to put an engine in it fo drive it ... painted it with tractor enamel ... thought it was cool ... turned out nice ... your the man ...
Thank you Joe. Nothing like paying for your own ride with your hard earned money. I did the same. I spent about $490 more than you but mine was running 😅
My very first paint was Sigal stage red metallic and it turned out really well, the second time I sprayed would have been better but the customer forgot to give me the catalysts, stayed wet way tooo long. And to let dry sand and re-shoot turned out nice in the end.
Dang man, a classmate did that when I was in school, the teacher made the whole class chemical strip the car to learn from his mistake no Activator 😭 that shit scared me for life lol that was almost 30 years ago
A true talented painter can paint in all conditions. Different guns. weather conditions. Temperatures. Nobody is perfect and everyone makes mistakes when it comes to different conditions. But somehow a good painter makes it work. Buffing, touchup, paint corrections. Taping off runs. little razor blade scrappage. Picking out a fly. the work before and after the spray job.....all that makes a good painter. The trigger man is the real deal!!!
Tell em Mike they think Triggerman just some jive slick talking turkey 😂 I'm just getting warmed up. Thank you for your continued support. Blessings ♥️

I rarely subscribe but I see a lot of value to supporting your mission. I'll binge watch your videos before wasting your time with questions I have. The only dent repair work I've done is using dry ice to pop our minor hail damage. Surprisingly it improved the look but I'm sure it wasn't nearly as good as we thought it was. Guess I'll ask 1 question since I'm going to be painting my own projects this year. Would you trust a snap-on Saber? The gun has sentimental value, my buddies father passed away and it was a gift, and I was going to honor him by using it for my personal projects. I can borrow paint guns from a handful of body guys and figured I would get your opinion. Impressive videos, editing, and knowledge. Thank you

I didn't commit until watching this video. It will be a JDM Honda cr-x del sol going back to factory red. You made a comment about multiple clear layers with an additional layer for super gloss. I personally never put reducer in my chest coat. It reduces the solids. Yes you can avoid orange peel without putting reducer and you have to get the right spray gun and the right air pressure some clear coats You have to use a completely different spray gun that itemizes different. But yes a flat finish zero orange peel clear coat can be achieved without adding reducer

Thanks for that, i did wonder if it would change the appearance if it was polished, Ive had some issues recently with polishing some pastel colours in 2k direct gloss on the system i use which is Mipa OC, i buy the 2k in as i only have a water base coat scheme, it changes colour when you polish it but only on the pastel colours, its a binder system on the 2k which has options for it to be MS or HS OC ( One Coat ), coverage and gloss is great with the OC but you can't polish the pastel colours, MS is better for polishing pastel colours but poor coverage and average gloss

@thetriggerman954 yup, I had the single headlight. No aftermarket performance parts for that motor. Not back then anyway. I like the 71 body style
That turned out great !! Nicely done....you made it look easy.
Thank you David. It's definitely not easy. Nerve wrecking stuff there 😂 one screw up and it's game over.

Wow nice work. I love it. And awesome job well done

once again triggerman thank you for ur videos. i give me hope on my project.
My favorite gun to watch. Nice job. Cheers :)

Good job man. I need to learn painting.
Lots of jobs available never too late to start learning. We are a recession proof industry 😅😉
Will definitely
Subscribe.
Can you do a single stage paint job and still put a regular clear coat on top the same day?
I have done it in the past even though I think it's against the manufacturer's recommendation. You definitely want to check with your paint supplier / manufacturer and find out. When I did it in the past I put the single stage down let it sit to where it almost feels like it's pretty much dry maybe 45 minutes then put the clear coat over it and I had no issues. I actually wanted to do it on this car I called the local DuPont distributor and they advised me not to.

My very first paint was Sigal stage red metallic and it turned out really well, the second time I sprayed would have been better but the customer forgot to give me the catalysts, stayed wet way tooo long. And to let dry sand and re-shoot turned out nice in the end.

💪💪💪What do you think about clearcoat without thinner? Can orange peel be avoided without using thinner?
I personally never put reducer in my chest coat. It reduces the solids. Yes you can avoid orange peel without putting reducer and you have to get the right spray gun and the right air pressure some clear coats You have to use a completely different spray gun that itemizes different. But yes a flat finish zero orange peel clear coat can be achieved without adding reducer
