  • This is something I found on the internet by accident while searching for something else related to Nemesis. This clip features short interviews with director Stuart Baird, and actors Brent Spiner (Data) and Marina Sirtis (Troi).
    For those of you who want to go straight to a particular person's section, Brent starts at 2:07, and Marina starts at 2:55. I believe this was a British interviewer; hence Marina sounding more British than usual. :)

    I like how Sirtis can't entirely contain her contempt for Baird, despite the fact that is supposed to be a promotial interview. Baird by all accounts appears to be a shitty director.

      She did concede later that the 'method to the madness' of not watching the show was to give a 'fresh take' on the series but doing that for the 4th Next Gen movie was the wrong time to do that.

    I didn't think the clone looked that much like Picard...I had to REALLY use my imagination... his lips were way too thick. When he showed up, I felt like I was supposed to know who he was, but I kept guessing until they said clone. (well I had an idea it was supposed to be picard after the conversation, but quite confused at first)

    Stuart Baird; the man who DESTROYED TNG franchise.
    His lack of Star Trek knowledge - or even simple facts - made him the most idiotic choice to helm this project.
    'Hmmm, we need a really good picture, so, let's get people who've no familiarity - that way they'll bring fresh ideas.'
    Tick, tick-BOOM!
    Just looking at the garbage he'd been involved with beforehand shows he's nothing but a hack(on Wikipædia as well as here, he proudly announces he's cut - edited - more films than he's directed. So, why would any idiot think he was a good choice?).
    I wouldn't let Baird take video wit my phone, let alone have him make a multi-million $ film.

      +Jake Jarmel The criticism of the movies is that they tend to play like extended TV episodes. But I think that's preferable to trying to be a proper movie that fails because both the characters' relative lack of arc and the too-malleable in-universe rules of physics overstretch credibility.

    • @musicbackups6053
      @musicbackups6053 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. First Contact (1996) and Insurrection (1998) were both masterpieces. It blows me away that Frakes' directing services were not secured by the franchise for the next film installment. I was a kid who grew up with TNG and was generally oblivious to these types of details back when it was happening, but nevertheless it humbles me to this day that I always thought of Frakes as a solid acting talent, but never (until now) appreciated him for the prodigious director that he turned out to be.
      But since rediscovering the series as an adult (Thank you #Netflix + #Hulu), it has become a deeply rewarding thrill and deeply rewarding to see how well the show holds up. It's almost better with time, like a fine wine. As for my personal experience as a fan, I love and appreciate it even more. Maturity and the passage of time has proven just how timeless #TNG truly is.
      Getting back to my original point, Frakes is not just a talented actor, but a masterful directing talent. I watched FC + I recently and they flattened me.- just blew me away, technically, artistically, and thematically. Some films really do achieve frame by frame perfection, and Frakes does it twice- and in radically different ways. These two films were sisters, but they were not twins. Why this precious commodity - a beloved franchise and cultural institution - was placed into other (Baird) hands is beyond me. It saddens me deeply. While I maintain that as fans, we can forgive the series a flaw or an occasional artistic failure - after all, we can't expect a homerun from every at bat, or a touch down on every drive, or 100% shooting from the floor - I , like you, am perplexed about why the powers that be went in this direction with the film.
      Oh well, I have more to treasure about the rest of the series and the other fine films.

    • @JamesOhGoodie

      Here's a funny fact: LeVar Burton was briefly considered to direct since he's directed a ton of episodes across all the shows. But Paramount went over his head and installed Baird, who repeatedly called him "Laverne" through early shooting. Baird hasn't directed a film since, but guess who sits on the board of the Director's Guild?
      LeVar Burton.
      Not saying that has anything to do it, other hand irony is sweet.

    I do think that bringing in an unknown director was a poor choice for Nemesis. I also believe the story was too similar to several of the episodes (finding Lore, finding the female android). I also felt as if the story could have been stronger if they had not brought in a clone of Picard. If you recall in the series Spock was still on Romulus and the underground movement was strong. I think those are a few of the reasons fans did not go see the film in big numbers.

    I thought the movie was awful-it looked like they just threw it together. And then Data DIES, on top of that, all the mourning they did for him was to raise their glasses of whatever-it-was and say something like "To those who are no longer with us????"
    Makes sense now that I read that the director did not even bother to watch any of TNG episodes or listen to what the cast had to say about their characters..
    TNG deserved better than this...maybe in an alternate universe....

    • @BryceNewall
      @BryceNewall  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Adam Johnson I'd agree with you about Stuart Baird, but Brannon Braga was one of the series' best writers. And Rick Berman did a great job of keeping Star Trek going after Gene Roddenberry died; and, in fact, he was calling a lot of the shots even before Gene died, when his health was declining. Berman was the one at least partially responsible for bring Star Trek TNG into the movies, and for 2 great (in my opinion) spinoff series. Or 3 series, if he was involved with Enterprise; I can't remember.

    • @adamj6645
      @adamj6645 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bnewall1 I agree that Rick Berman should be credited with the success TNG and Brannon Braga also as a writer (amongst many others). DS9 also was a great series and again Berman and Braga were a big part of that. Voyager as a whole was ok but inconsistant. There were very few character arc's, Robert Beltran was poorly cast as Chakotay, Garrett Wang as Harry Kim was questionable. Nelix was an unnecessary character (Kes too). Both Berman and Braga created, exec-produced and served as writers for Voyager and also Enterprise (not sure about being writers on ENT?) which in my opinion wasnt cast very well. The theme music was wrong and too many bad VFX. Despite the above bashing there are many, many positives for all the series that far out-weigh the negatives. I just feel the franchise lost its way and ended on a low - ultimately responsible for that is Berman and Braga and Stuart Baird for directing Nemesis.
