He did a really good job at Pontiac. GTO was made by gaming the GM's internal regulations. Firebird became an icon on it's own, then it went to become the Bandit's car from the films, and was the car that created the term 'Rockford Turn'. And then when DeLorean left, GM gave a new manager a task to 'save them or shut them'. He didn't have to do much, as Glen Larson specifically requested new Firebird to be Knight 2000 car in Knight Rider, which made it world famous and probably as iconic as DeLorean car. Jay Leno also repeatedly stated that Firebird was always better than Camaro.

I had the good fortune of being the first person to go through a box of papers taken from John's Belfast office by a cleanout worker helping to clear the factory. He took the large box home and only brought it out for a 20 year reunion at the factory put on by the DeLorean Owners Association. The press were present and it was decided that I would be the one to open the box and examine the contents live on camera. I actually had a 15 min. advance opportunity to get a preview and gather my thoughts. What struck me was a Telex John sent from New York after exiting the Concord flight following his visit to Lotus Cars in Norwich, UK. It was addressed to Colin Chapman and was an action list of items needing attention regarding the interior fit and finish of the prototype. John's attention to detail showed a loving regard for the car. He wanted it to rise beyond being the sum of it's parts into a seamless artistic expression. A con artist would have ticked that box and moved on: Not John. I now have several DeLorean cars and being an engineer myself have great respect for the man. I also, by chance, spent hours with Georgetto Giugiaro, the future designer of the DeLorean coachwork, at the 1963 Turino Auto Show where he was displaying his first creation, The Iso Grifo A3. He and DeLorean passionately created a car that was truly special and remains so today.

Check out Gtran Turismo 4, 5 and 6. They all have the "2004 Delorean"... They don't have any way to make new parts, other than like add different motors after they run out of the hundreds they still have in crates. Watching this while eating lunch and drove my DeLorean to work today. It warms my heart to see a detailed video like this get so many views. Despite the fires and production problems, no talk of religious or political views interfered on the production line. Everyone there put their hearts into building something bigger for their community. I’m so honored to have my car at 23 and drive it as much as I do. I want everyone to know these were real cars and they will hopefully outlive me and stand as a monument for future generations. There’s a million way you can do it, both good and bad. But if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. ❤️ -VIN 4693
