I also thought that myspace's decision to allow users TOTAL control over the colors and pictures of their page's interface as a BAD idea. You'd be cruising along, and then, BAM! Pink and Black are thrown up on a site with an almost unreadable font. The kids probably thought it was 'cool', but adults certainly weren't impressed. It may seem limiting, but Facebook's strict adhesion to a standard interface made the site easier to navigate, and its division of Events, News Feeds, Watch Parties, and Marketplace suggests that 'organization' is not a bad word after all. As a result, Facebook seemed more 'grown up', a more refined site that even 'old people' might use. Of course, as soon as the older folks piled on, younger ones went to find a new place to escape. Is that a bad thing for Facebook. Not really. Having a common place for relatives, old high school and/or work friends to share their lives is totally sustainable. Let the kids have TikTok...
There had some misleading information, Friendster is not founded in Malaysia, just currently own by someone in Malaysia, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendster here is the information.
Myspace does still seem to exist, although its most likely very different now than it was in 2006 or 2007. I think I even remember AOL instant messanger also having where you could put a little customized profile page of yourself, thats actually what I used before Facebook which I joined in 2008. AIM I remember using before that as far back as 2001.
You've been eating too many member berries; the customization is what made it impossible for someone's granny or aunt to join Myspace. That may not mean much to you but that put a ceiling on who would have ultimately joined Myspace. Meaning less revenue. I bet those old grannies and aunts have a Facebook today though.
It would have happened eventually. That's why I say fuck Social Meda in general. Even youtube has gone down the shitter. People are going to leave youtube if they don't stop all the content censorship and demonitization.
So TH-cam got back to me and said that this video didn't violate their guidelines. They'd made a mistake... Anyways, the MySpace video is back, enjoy guys!
Best thing about MySpace was Tom… didn’t corrupt the platform, didn’t sell any private info to advertisers , just sold the company and secured his bag. Good on you Tom
To be fair, I think for Mark, it was along the lines of "Turn your platform into this or you will never be capable of surpassing myspace and you guys will shutdown in the next 5 years" so they started working with the CIA or whatever it is they do
Myspace was way better...you could actually talk and meet new people without restrictions, customise your page, share your music, I was even friends with artist before they became famous. Your mom or dad did not use it...unlike facebook were everyone uses it
if you have got something to hide, pls do not use SOCIAL networks sites... And "without restrictions", you say? Interesting, what restrictions you find so harmfull and inconvenient?
@@zdzichus.3264 For me I have nothing to hide, but having my mom and my closed minded relatives over there judging every move that I do (my profile picture, what I post etc.) is a pain in the ass.

Nah, Facebook don't listen to what you say for adds. There's algorithm that depending on what you like, do, search, look, how long, it can predict, with your own collected data, pretty much anything you will be thinking at certain points. Look up the full documentary on Cambridge Analytica, it'll open your mind to what you actually share.
@@arlobennett8504 Thats hardly the point. Nor would it stop, even remotely the tactics used by social media platforms to spy and collect data. You may as well have said. Dont use the Internet period. But, it doesn't stop there either. Whats more important is what or how, later this data could be used with out consent.
SAY, seems to me like a website that let's someone customize their page as they please is in demand. Maybe something Designed from the ground up to be a positive user experience. Possibly with the ability to use it as a nexus for all other sites. TH-cam, Newgrounds, Patreon. Hmmm, but how to fund it. ....Hmmm....How do you feel about free to play games? If the experience was good enough would you pay for a superior social media site?
What people don’t seem to recall is one day everybody was just gone from MySpace. I don’t remember any specific point where the UX was bad or anything, just a sudden ghost town. We didn’t really like Facebook, it was boring and bland, but that’s where our friends were so we switched over.
Yeah ill never understand the big craze over Facebook. Everyone migrated to Facebook and I had no choice but to abandon ship. Myspace was so much better and you could customize your page!
So true. The internet truly sucks nowadays. The days of early chatrooms and the like were so great. I met so many amazing people, a couple of which I still speak to this day.
It did kind of grow old hearing the same song over and over. I always changed my song about every 2 weeks. Most of my friends changed their profile song regularly as well. The best was when you remembered a forgotten favorite of you and your friends and posted it before anyone else did. My friends and I were always trying to remember songs. Always like, "Forgot all about this! I loved this song!!!"
I was actually able to log into my MySpace a couple months ago after years of being gone. All my friends were still on there, it's so eerie to see everyone's default photo the same as the last time I had seen it years ago. Like a virtual graveyard of mid-2000 memories. Good times...
RE2LeonS really? Mine is gone and has been since they went down years ago and then when they came back it’s just empty. No friends or any of my old content. Sad, id like to have all those cringey memories back.
I ditched Facebook the moment my mom, and other relatives over the age of 50, started sending me friends request, and they was messaging me about what I was posting. There’s a growing number of us out there that don’t mess with Facebook, and MySpace has a chance right now to rise from the ashes, by not being like Facebook.
Yea that's interesting I felt the same way .... FB was for my parents then Myspace died and now my kids think FB is for me and Insta/TikTok/Snap is for them... Ig I could have moved on but I stayed with FB as it was leftover from my time and I never liked it. I never had my own thing.
I’m just done with the concept. I don’t need to know what Billy from school is doing and I don’t need any crazy ex’s looking me up. I feel like a lot of people just want a private life with no drama these days. Too much drama and negativity on those things. Anyone still using fb is probably an ahole. 😝 It’s just all so invasive.
One of the problems in this day and age is the competition from everywhere, from opensource platforms to TH-cam comments to networks for work use. Myspace still commands some brand recognition, but it's a mixed bag. Some remember the crappy interface, and some others the moral panic. I'd like a network that's reasonably popular, and not controlled by absolute bastards like Zuc. I did try several contenders back in the day, but most of them failed on some fundamental level by being one-trick gimmick play. The one I really liked got acquired by fucking Google, poorly reimplemented on their cloud platform, and eventually just killed.
MySpace died out in 2011 when they copied Facebook and got rid of customizing layouts and music players. I miss 2006 and 2007. Customizing your profile was so fun.
Definitely agree and also being able to have people call you with their phone and have the conversation on MySpace at the computer. Customized wall papers backgrounds etc. Wayy better than Fb
Agreed. When they started copying Facebook is when I left MySpace permanently because there was no point if they were just going to be Facebook Lite instead of being a unique alternative. If I somehow came into possession of ownership of what remains of MySpace, I would push to make MySpace like it was in the 2000s again. With the right marketing, I think that it could be successful given that people are hating Facebook more and more and are beginning to have nostalgia for the MySpace of the 2000s.
Women in underwear are awesome I dont understand. Now all the girls wear leggings so you can literally see everything. I feel like I'm at a strip club every day just in public.. hope the legging trend doesnt go away
I don't see Google dying, at least not in our lifetime (assuming you're not in your 50s+). Facebook and Twitter are on life support and I'd be happy to pull the plug
@@hailtothevic imagine owning Google (youtube) and Facebook shares knowing that Twitters being pulled up on being filled with bots and burning the books, first you'd quietly sell them and they'd collapse under lawsuits
being able to add html into your profile and do a full div overlay was pretty awesome..100% custom design so you could have an actual unique profile not just change the background
@American Patriot Ya, you were all of what 11, maybe 12. Those Playdates must have been intense! Rockin' the sand box, Mondays. Sand the seesaw, Tuesdays. etc. Either that, or they thought you were gay (you know - happy) and wanted to talk boys...
@Luke Robinett You forgot to say... "Get off my lawn!!!" Don't forget to wave your cane around all menacing like, the idiot kids really hate that alot!
It did my head in that every time you went onto a page you had to hear whatever shitty music someone had chosen. Had to mute, and then kept forgetting to take it off when I went on TH-cam.
I remember the classic myspace and i can say it was much better then facebook. What really killed myspace is the redesign and taking away the features which made the user experience fun.
Facebook was already presenting stiff competition with the slick user interface, but the redesign totally killed MySpace. Plus, everyone was saying that Tom sold MySpace, and without Tom it just wasn't MySpace.
The NSA invested heavily in Facebook, they wouldve just took over Myspace instead. Tyranny will never end until we make it. Theyre entrenched too deep to simply run from it
I dont think zucc or fb is really responsible for what fb became, though. Whoever armed themselves with fb wouldve just armed themselves with myspace instead, and THAT would be the platform that currently stalks us, blocks us from making any comments, and makes endless ad revenue off our data, etc.
Everything eventually ends. The same will happen with Facebook, and TH-cam. Something will come to replace it, or people will just tire of it. It's all a matter of time.
Facebook is one indispensable reason why MySpace failed. Without an alternative, people would have stuck with MySpace, despite its limitations and the inevitable moral panics that new media get to suffer. Replacing TH-cam is possible, but much more difficult. There are no real alternatives to it at this point, and the infrastructure required by a contender would be enormous.
No. ppl believed the propaganda driven by a news cast.. Nothing new in that regard. While Myspace may have been lacking in foreseeing what the population would expect. FB in its early days was no better. My memory of FB was it was complicated to use and just a wast of time. Myspace was still the go to platform. Today, FB still hasn't changed. Its Biz page is still over complected and a F.... around for the simplest of tasks. Not to mention the miss informed information given to tracking info.
As a matter of fact, I remember when I got my first apartment and I remember my next-door neighbor's son wanted to borrow my computer to check his MySpace. This was back like in March of 2006. I also remember using MySpace through 2006 and 2007 before joining Facebook in 2008.

It’s crazy to think MySpace died before most people and teens had smart phone apps. I never downloaded a MySpace app. Even though MySpace was my first social media site I ever joined.
@@deedeemerry1295 I think Myspace was bought from the people who work for fb,like here in Slovenia, foreign people are coming, buying our factories etc.,and after a year they shot down, here ,somebody is really organized and they want to destroy everything. We have to unite the love in us collectively. It was so free MS,if you really liked someone it was a peace of cake, now fb if I think deeply started to give us a sense of power in us to judge people by appearance don't even knowing the real true of a person.
Everything I know about coding stemmed from my use of Myspace. I used to charge other kids in my high school to make their pages for them. I am now a business owner and built both of my websites on my own - Thanks, Tom!!!
I think either Yale or Harvard issues a document every fall to its professors listing the things which the incoming 18 y.o. freshmen won't have firsthand knowledge of. It's always a shock. I heard one today. When Tom Brady won his first Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes was in kindergarten. :-/
That was before this life became Orwellian. I just wanted to skate and play video games back then. Little did we know, we were entering a dark era of social programming. Now we see social media for what it is. I miss the feeling of not giving a shit back in the early 2000s..
Myspace used to have the single largest music library of any company on the planet. I didn't know this until 2012 when I met with their director of data center operations; their data centers were awesome. I'm still connected to several of the data center alums, as they are all with other companies now, and are experts in their field.
@@MattaLac1987 Nobody will be able to recover the missing music library from MySpace. The exact physical storage hardware that used to have all of their music has long since been shredded. Since MySpace had switched ownership a few times, the newer datacenter management team(s) likely didn't know what they had. They obviously didn't migrate everything successfully. Sad, really. . . And we all think that what goes onto the internet stays there forever. . .. However, It too, can vanish into thin air completely with absolutely zero evidence that it ever existed in the first place.
Same here. Although I really got my first taste messing with the source code for games on my TI-83+ graphing calculator a few years before MySpace, but MySpace was my first foray into html and learning about file hosting and how the internet works in general. Facebook is horrible. I haven't been on it in over a year and it isn't until after you've been off it for a while that you realize how bad it really is.
Here's something that gave me a chuckle: Last time I used Facebook was in 2012, and I while I was up north in Brisbane I changed all my details, and posted that I would be moving to Malaysia(all my detail changes related to this). I had no plans on doing this, and the laptop I used was retired shortly after. I did move, but to a town about 100kms from my last house. Last year I got an email from Facebook recommending me businesses in the town I where I currently live, which is again another 100kms from the address I had moved to. How the fuck they managed to figure out where I live is a good mystery, it's also fucking terrifying.
Charles Lindeman Everything is linked. You yahoos put all your information online in different locations and that information gets colated. Facebook is funded by the CIA which makes matters worse. The reason you can't change that background is because Mark Zuckerturd likes the blue and white background for him so he doesn't want anybody to be able to change it. Shows what kind of a narcissist Zuckerturd is. And the false flagging for "hate speech" was bad too.
I had an uncle that visited us regularly and used MySpace. I remember the one time he was visiting and showed us his MySpace. The only detail I remember from it was seeing one of his friends’ profiles and instead of a them having a photo of themselves, they had the parental advisory logo that you typically see on music album covers. I thought it was weird and asked why it was there, to which my dad responded “That’s just the picture they used.” In retrospect, that was probably my first exposure to internet culture.
I feel like tumblr is kind of like Myspace now. You have themed blogs with glitter graphics etc. And a certain aesthetic to each blog. Also no one really uses tumblr that much it seems.

Yeeesss, YEEESS, AND OMG YYYYEEESSSS! I deleted my FB account in Jan. this year because it's just NOT fun anymore. It's debates, angry comments, politics, news, game invites, trying to take the best pictures to make your friends jealous. I just... I hate it, and not having it has been remarkable. My friends have to talk or text to me what they have to say, if they REALLY want to show me a picture they can text it. I pay less attention to my phone and treat it more of a tool. The addiction is real too, when I first deleted FB, and I mean LEGIT deleted it, I had a 30 day grace period to undo my request. It took every bit of strength to not sign back on and have it forever deleted, but now I think back and think how silly I was, and how sad I was that I used social media as some affirmation to being civilized. I kinda feel like a rebel when I tell people "No, I don't have a facebook, but heres my phone number."
I always thought MySpace was a different platform not to be compared at ALL with Facebook and today I STILL strongly feel that way. Facebook is for showing off the facade friends circle a teen wants family friends and relatives to see. MySpace was the place where random people who like the same song or common love of something … anything…. Can connect to each other.

No. They want to get rid of the user generated content and use TH-cam to push milquetoast corporate content from the usual suspects we come on here to avoid.
Apparently they're trying to become a TV station, since they call their future "TH-cam TV". Apparently they don't grasp that TV went out with the 20th century.
MySpace really was amazing. It was so nice, mellow and rewarding. It’s also how my SO and I met 20 years ago. I was a huge fan of his band and reached out to me announcing a local show. He passed away last year and while my grief is still intense - mu gratitude is bigger. I have to thank MySpace. FB never paid off - I was an avid user until 2016 when it became an outright shit show. It’s also nice not wasting all that time.
I remember learning HTML to "Pimp My Page" Having graphics and music that played the moment your page opened was a wondrous thing at the time. Then it became annoying.
I did the same. I can still code in html today. I didnt even realize it was coding! I just wanted to have a nice page! I miss being able to post things on other ppls pages and share music and even my own tracks. Quite a few rappers and bands became famous using myspace music pages. I used to hate that bug tho, where a band page always had u as "104 year old female" lol but it was fun. I remember a lot of websites dedicated to pre programmed myspace layouts. And u could have a youtube video on ur page too. That was so cool. It was slower but a lot more fun. Fb is not as fun. And way too serious. I cant say SHIT without getting a 30 day ban. I got 7 between october of 2019 and oct of 2020. That is so harmful when u have a job and stuff.... I finally just stopped posting and my facebook just exists to receive messages. And i post my opinions on Parler. Parler is actually cool not as cool as myspace was but check it out. Ppl think its mostly conservatives but thats not true. Lots of gamers and libertarians and youtubers who are sick of being banned and stuff. A lot of good ppl who were demonetized are making come backs too. Very first time I remember getting on the internet at home was when AOL was still sending out these CDs inviting us to sign up for a free trial. I remember one night, I had my PC in my room and I ran a long phone line to a phone jack and popped in an AOL CD and then I got online with AOL chat rooms and other things. This I remember was in the summer of 2001. This was even before Windows XP was released, so at the time, I was using Windows ME. I remember back in the day, America Online was the Facebook then.
@Boss_Man_TIn the late 90s and early 00s it seemed like a decent new desktop was borderline obsolete within a year. Even if you wanted to upgrade your existing stuff Intel or the sound/video card makers might have switched to a different form factor already. It was an interesting time to be alive; but kinda glad that tech has matured to a state where my 2012 MacBook meets my needs 7 years after I bought it.
You should have heard people talking about the internet in the 90's. I remember in 95 a class assignment in my communications class in college was to just email the teacher.
The selling off and over development, the corporation trying to control it and changing the entire platform, forcing us to go somewhere else, is what killed MySpace.
02:45 Myspace failed bcuz it was for people who think like: "I'm a people-person. I like to meet people". Facebook and twitter are not for people-persons, they are for trolls. Trolls won.

I think if MySpace came back in some way, it would do pretty damn well. Not just because of the simplicity of it, but because a lot of people would go back because of nostalgia.

Is that a bad thing for Facebook. Not really. Having a common place for relatives, old high school and/or work friends to share their lives is totally sustainable. Let the kids have TikTok...

That was the worst aspect of it. All it did was to show to the world how shitty a person's tastes were.
You've been eating too many member berries; the customization is what made it impossible for someone's granny or aunt to join Myspace. That may not mean much to you but that put a ceiling on who would have ultimately joined Myspace. Meaning less revenue. I bet those old grannies and aunts have a Facebook today though.
Myspace never played with our privacy or treated us like sh@t and we turned our backs on it :(

Best thing about MySpace was Tom… didn’t corrupt the platform, didn’t sell any private info to advertisers , just sold the company and secured his bag. Good on you Tom
To be fair, I think for Mark, it was along the lines of "Turn your platform into this or you will never be capable of surpassing myspace and you guys will shutdown in the next 5 years" so they started working with the CIA or whatever it is they do
Back then, selling user data wasn't a really big thing since nobody could have foreseen how important data will become

I was extremely reluctant to jump the ship from Myspace to Facebook. When all of my friends were all about Facebook I was still loving Myspace. No politics, no debates, no hate no memes no grandparents sending me endless candy crush invites.... just better times
Omg yes the candy crush n game invites must stop than ull click on their profile and that's like legit all that's on their is their last score update lmao ahhhhhh🙅♀️💥 (subscribe to pewdiepie 🤜🤛)
I too was one of the last people to leave, I don’t know what made Facebook popular, I went to Facebook because everyone left MySpace. Now however MySpace is trash
a world w/o memes is atrocious.
The stripping of the site's core functionality drove the last of us away. It was sad watching the media corral everyone into the Book of Faces.

MySpace sure made it easy for emo / screamo / pop punk type bands to invite eager underage girls backstage for "autographs" and "photos." No, I'm not accusing you or your band (whose name I don't even know) of doing this, but it was the dirty little secret of MySpace which ruined, or at least took the innocence of, a lot of girls, most of whom had scarred wrists due to the cutting phenomenon which MySpace also enabled / accelerated.

So true
@Boss_Man_T very similar story. Now sounds so obsolete bu it was not long ago. Stuff changed fast
