Thanks for doing this video. I am currently working on a deck project and have poured some concrete. Using Quikrete 5000. I ended up using more water than what was recommended on the bag. You want to get a consistency where each batch will stay on a shovel, but not enough water where it runs off of the shovel. Having a little excess water come to the top as you are finishing the pour is ideal.

I did build both my porches 20 years ago but Once I hit about 65 I don't really care about doing this sort of construction anymore. I'm in my 70's now and getting up and down off the ground is not fun, although I did just install a mini split A/C that i built a platform for. I did enjoy that, I did the electrical also myself, evacuated the system and charged it... I'm also in a wheelchair about half the time, it's powered so it saves me a lot of steps.

This was really enjoyable to watch, honestly. I've been building stuff my whole life, but I don't really care as much anymore since I lost my dad, who taught me all I know. I do enjoy seeing you doing it, though

Good to know you have the step by step Videos. I am planning a Deck Infront of my door...right now only using only concrete blocks as stairs to get into my home. It keeps moving with every heavy rainstorm and wobbles, to where I have to keep leveling everything again so the blocks stacked don't move.

    A couple thoughts;
    - On removing demolition material; an alternative is to have a dumpster delivered to your house. They deliver it and take it away whenever you're done
    - Maybe a dumb question ; could you have started laying the decking from the far edge working inwards? That way you could insure the one-inch overlap and if anything needed to be trimmed it would be at the house side, and less visible.
    - On cutting the stringers, the "pro's" cut right through the end lines and don't have to finish with a jig saw. Looks flaky to me but they do it. The one time I did stringers I used the jig saw.
    - Looking at the year-2 results, it does point out some of the advantages of Azek or other artificial decking. The big downsides are cost and that the decking gets extremely hot in direct sun (like, you can't walk on it bare-foot)

  • @avalon449

Liked your video and I used the CAMO pro system and bow wrench when replacing our decking boards. My experience with the CAMO is such that I give it a B+ because it was not as easy to use as I expected, especially in tight places like near railing posts etc. AND we had a lot of screws break during installation. I do like the look for keeping the board surface clear of screws but I wonder how it will be if/when I have to remove them. Also wonder how they will hold during our hot/wet summers and cold/wet winters.

    • @EverydayHomeRepairs

I like it but 2 main drawbacks for this specific project
      1. Price (Composite for 5X the cost of Pressure Treated
      2. I would need to change the joist spacing as composite can't span as far as pressure treated deck boards without having issue.

    • @EverydayHomeRepairs

Rebuilding my deck is on my to do list this spring. I'm curious on a couple of things. 1. Is there a conversion table/chart out there to convert measurements to decimals? Like how did you convert the deck board size 5 3/8" to 5.375? 2. The more important question...I plan on placing a hot tub (3400lbs total weight when full) on the deck. How do I calculate the required support required underneath? I currently have 2x6 Joists under on 16" centers. From the house wall, the deck measurement extends 14' and the length is 24'. I have 4x4 posts supporting the rim joist every 6'. The tub will be located very close to the house so the ledger will take most of the weight I suspect. Any & all help is appreciated.

I get you make your living off YT. But most people watching are not educated enough to do this and to show them the wrong way to build this deck is irresponsible.
You MUST use flashing against your home, ( plastic deck ledger should have been used up under the siding , not say , eh, it looks ok. Wrong !
You measured wrong and it looks terrible to not have an overhang at the front , plus it should have been picture framed and not have exposed end grain.
Adding 6 screws into through the rim board into the ledger is wrong and weakens the wood, causing splitting you should have used an LS90 on the inside corner .
The stairs Cannot have Open risers over 4” in most states , it’s a safety issue for children’s heads .
At least try to be responsible when telling folks what to do. Maybe stick to electrical work.

  • @Casmige

What does that really mean? “The best I could do for the time being…”?.
The best you could do is do it the right way because there’s never time to do it again for the time being doesn’t even make any sense it’s just a sorry asinine excuse.
Really should’ve done some retro flashing also.
