Blacksmith does woodworking. Immediately finds an excuse to use a random piece of flat-stock as gauge. Epic! Seriously, your meticulous approach and your attention to detail is a lot better than some professional carpenters I've seen.
50 year carpenter watches thinking he’s never built anything so structurally, efficiently, aesthetically, or practically refined. Oh well, maybe in another lifetime.
Let’s see now; you are, by your expressed (TH-cam) profession, a blacksmith. And a carpenter (a careful, exacting, experienced one). A horticulturalist. A gardener. Also from previous videos; a machinist, a flax maker, an obviously loving father and I am sure the list would continue long past my finger’s ability to find keys here on my iPad. Obviously, Torbjörn you perfectly fit the definition of a RENAISSANCE MAN. Also, your videos always make me smile 😎. THANK YOU!
The fact you reused/recycled those carriage bolts is the essence of a blacksmith, in that you see the recurring potential in a piece of iron.😉 You are my kind of guy.😊
Memories. One of my earliest as a toddler was watching my late Father build a new wooden deck atop the small fugly poured concrete one their house came with. I was goggle eyed at how he used his mind and hands, and all sorts of cool tools, to transform building materials to create something central to our daily lives. It had a permanent effect on my young psyche that persists to this day.
Outstanding work Torbjörn. Even on an exterior deck, the small details make all the difference; like the slight chamfer on the board ends, 45°miters instead of butt joints and consistent spacing on the deck boards. Very professional job. The flower garden looks amazing too! 🌸🌺 🌹
Nice one, Torbjörn. I really enjoyed your use of tools. Curved gouges for clearing bolt heads and so on. Really nice, careful work as always. And a big project that will serve the home for years and years.
When I saw that bottom lip off the stairs I thought to myself - hmm that's strange, why didn't he build the stairs so it fits with the post so it doesn't go out... Later in the video I saw what you did and I learned that I shall never ever doubt a genius :) Very nice video, Thunder bear! As always :)
Hello! Tip: You can find special plastic spacers in stores. The decking board should not come into contact with the joists. This solution is not expensive at all, and the lifespan of your terrace will double. Greetings from an architect from Ukraine!
I really do miss your videos when you were putting them out regularly. I never missed one. Your artistic ability and skill is phenomenal. God Bless Be safe Theron
I would be nice to see a video on how you plan your projects. From the idea, to on paper, to making it. I know that's a lot for a video, but it would be interesting to see. Thanks again for your awesome videos!
Thanks! Problem is it usually just cooks in my head, very little gets on paper... but I understand what you mean. The reasoning, planning, working out the material needed etc. In this case I wasn't even sure the project was interesting enough for a video, so I just filmed without much thought at all.
I’m a couple days behind. But I must say that you make the best videos. Even if I wasn’t interested and into the same things you are, I would still stand by my statement. Only downside is that we can’t get enough😂. Perfection takes time and family always comes first. I fully support that, keep doing what you enjoy. God bless and stay safe.

It depends on who you talk to... some say tape or any plastic between will actually trap moisture instead of working it's way out of the wood and evaporate.
@@torbjornahman For my deck i got tape that feels a bit porous, it's not smooth and consistent, don't know how to describe it🤔 I used untreated lumber and put just a coat of wood protection on it. After a real wet winter here in Germany, i can't see any discoloration or water marks on it, i'm pretty happy👍 But, my deck is 3m in the air, on trees i had to cut after a storm, so it dries probably really fast😊
Interesting techniques on the deck and supports...Nice, learned some new ones! Thanks Torbjorn! Great videography and stunning back yard tour this time of year. @¿@ Always impressive and a real treat. 🙏
The garden looks lovely Torbjörn! As far as the decking rebuild goes, watching you pop those self tappers in with ease, I was reminded of the time before powered screwdrivers, when I had arms like a gorilla from placing screws by hand... after drilling the holes :(
A hand-tool collector advises: if you don't have a powered screwdriver, a handbrace (the sort normally used for drilling large holes in wood) and suitable adapter and bit works very well indeed.
Great job, the finished deck looks fantastic 👍. Here in Aus we have to contend with white ants, called termites in other countries. If we were to build a deck like that with the supports down on the ground like you have yours, the white ants would eat it to bits in a matter of months, all that would remain would be the nails and metal screws. All our supports, stumps we call them, are fitted with a “stump cap” to stop the white ants getting up into the building. With your cold climate you probably don’t have “termite “ problems. Looks great! Regards from Down Under, the land totally infested with white ants 😂.

My project list includes building a shed with a deck floor. When I get around to it I will be half burying a fake skeleton under the floor for the next people to find, whenever that is
Nice! I liked how you divided the boards up with one board going cross, that way you can use shorter boards. We've had real problems with boards warping from the sun, they've all been long boards. I think having shorter boards probably help... I just got permits to build a deck with a roof but I am gonna change the plans to redo the decking like you have done here.
Cool! Yes with the right lengths you can get away with less wastage and it also adds to the design. You need to be careful though, cutting them to the exact length and that the structure calls for the same length (being true and straight) across the whole width of the deck.
@@torbjornahman I have a miter saw with a pretty good stop for extra long cuts that I built myself to make lots of identical cuts when I paneled an outhouse last year so I think it'll do the trick
Hi Torbjorn, a great build. However, I would have installed friction pads on the steps and some grooving on the main deck, which would be like a skating rink after a downpour. Some neat joinery there.
If you put peel and stick snow and ice shield tape on top of your joists you'll get years more use before the rot seeps in at the fasteners again. We use to go for belt and suspenders, peel and stick and a metal joist cap with a drip edge on both sides. Quality work as always my friend, you are the consummate professional.

I'm kinda surprised that you seem to be using a cheap claw hammer instead of one that you've made...... possible future project there 🤔 I do very much like how your deck came out, it looks sweet!!! Hope you get to enjoy it this summer 😊👍👍👍👍
From one land and garden owner to another: See if you can find bamboo that will grow in your area. Especially something I know as iron bamboo: Cut off the long shoots every year. Even 8mm rods are excellent for supporting tomatoes etc.
You should have done this work one year ago before I did my own deck last summer : I could have used a few tricks (like chantfering the end boards and force equal spacing before screwing) to make my terrasse looks better!
It was on the list last year, but had to wait for this year :) Spacing is tricky, since treated wood usually is inconsistent in moisture content when you buy it. So different boards vary quite a bit.
I like that you want to reuse the carriage bolts. However, wire brushing removes the remaining galvanic coating leaving them unprotected from rust. Reusing such bolt for an indoors project is ideal, but not back on your deck. Perhaps you applied some type of protective coating off-camera?
No music. No BS. Just a rhythmic flow. Lovely.

Ha ha, thanks! Random pieces of flat stock can be gold!
it wasn't random, it was the thickness he needed. I've used a plank with 2 big nails though.
There was definitely an opportunity to heat it and beat it to make an elegant but entirely functional board spacing tool! 😹😹😹
